Have a coffee! You just saved my monstera. It was in too large a pot and had root rot, even though the top of the soil was dry. Now repotted and doing better. Thank you!
Using my ceiling fans has helped enormously in keeping my plants from staying too wet. I moved from a dryer state to a more humid state and struggled to keep the plants from drowning. I amended my soil, and started buying terracotta pots at thrift stores. Life is good!!!
My monstera grew sideways and toppled over so started looking up what to do, found your channel and binged like half of it. Genuinely helpful and chill content.
Thanks for the valuable tips. I've been waiting to repot some aroids until an expert tells me whether or not to remove every morsel of old media from the roots, as we usually do with orchids to avoid the hazards of decomposing media over the long haul. Now I know! This saves me time! Thanks for the excellent repot lesson.
I did find a cheese plant at the garden centre for 50p i was on death door ..but thanks to your advice it as happy as a plant can be sitting in my window with the aloes and the yukka
Greetings from another Torontonian! You’ve taught me so much about monsteras. People now come to my office to see the growth/progress I’m making with it.
I noticed that the gardeners in Türkiye tend to replant more or less expensive plants into bigger pots so they could sell them pricier. I lost several olants because of root rot. Now I check what's inside right after I buy anything. And very often that's tiny root system good for 10-12 pot sitting in 17 pot.
I would say you don't want to press everything down(soil), because you DO want air pockets. You want nice little air pocket humidity zones throughout your medium ideally. The roots love em
It looked to me like she and you were using different phone apps for light reading, they're wildly inaccurate but using the same app would at least yield comparable results, different phone apps completely nullify the numbers. Still, your down to earth approach is useful and appreciated, as always. I've seen way too many plant channels turn into the typical RUclips "latest hack" type.
Seeing as how much we love your advice it would be a lot fun if we could give each other advice in jokes only. Some puns, some knock knock jokes. Maybe your plant jokes. Viewers can send some in but other RUclipsrs can pitch in too if they’re inclined.
Why shouldn't there be any air pockets in the soil? I use a chunky mix for my aroids and the goal of it is to have more air for the roots. My E. N'joy is in a clear pot and I can see the roots growing through the air pockets
How do you know if you should be adding support for your monstera? the growth on mine seems pretty normal and contained but im not sure if at some point i should add some kind of support for the plants benefit.
My monstera is a 2 meter high monster and I'm still scared to take it out and splitt it, mo matter how many awesome video's of you I watch. 😅 Greetings from the Netherlands
I repotted my monstera into a pot with a self watering spout at bottom. There is a thick string, almost soft rope at bottom to draw water up. Is this a good pot for my monstera?
your Monstera can live in a self watering pot. they're not ideal, but if you have a good soil mix it can work. or if youre doing a pon medium, that can work.
no, not all plants like to be rootbound. most would grow faster and larger by not being root bound. Plants have different levels of tolerance for being rootbound. succulents tend to have fine, shallow roots, so they don't need to be repotted often.
I repotted my monstera just today! And now I hope I haven't sentenced it to death... 😮 It had about 5% soil left and was leaning so much, even with its support stake, that it was starting to make the round plastic pot oval. I have probably killed it because I chopped off a few of the biggest roots and separated off a baby (putting it in its own pot). I then put it back in the same pot with the same wooden support. I should have done it into terracotta. Oops.
@@KillThisPlantno they were wound around, right up against the edges of the pot inside. It was one of those self-watering pots and the roots had gone through the holes and taken up the entire space inside the watering base too. Edited to add that those roots inside the base of the pot had no soil whatsoever and were drying out. I had to cut the roots off to separate them from the base. I now think self-watering pots are not good for monsteras so I will go get a traditional terracotta pot.
@@KillThisPlant thanks darlz. I feel a bit panicked still but she's next to the brightest window, next to us (her favourite humans), living her best life. ❤
I think its more Lee has shown us that in a lot of cases moss poles's benefits do not outweight its hassles (it drying out constantly, not easily stackable, etc). But if you want a climbing plant to mature and grow, a miss pole has a slight advantage over it (especially if you want to propagate it later since youre essentially air layering it as it grows). He mentions this monstera is a reverted mint, which is a very desirable plant to collectors, so this might be why hes going with a pole this time
lux is a subpar way to measure how much light your plant is recieving as lux measures light that is detectable to human eyes, not light that plants absorb. It's nit picking, I know, but if you really want to know how much light your plants are getting, get a PAR meter. No phone can properly measure PAR. Probably don't need to buy unless you are advanced and really obsessed with plants, though.
@@laja6108 you are correct. But lux/FC is good enough, and I'm not going to recommend getting a $200 device that's more expensive than most people's plant collection to be slightly more accurate.

I just recently started using my ceiling fans also, it's been so humid lately that all my terracotta have been growing fuzzy mold lol

I always learn something new from your vids! Thanks for sharing Lee!
Thanks for all the great information! I'm starting with my first monstera and have found this channel super helpful!
I just repotted my monstera the other day, it gets tons of light but growth is slow so I'm hoping it does better with some fresh soil. :)
I learned most of my Monstera care tips from you! ❤️

thats fair, small air pockets; good. large pockets of roots touching no soil drying them out and having them die off; bad.

Great video! Very well explained!
thank u for this video! i was just about to repot my baby monstera lol
Once roots come out the bottom I repot. Monstera gets bigger with large pots.
Yikes...i checked...got a full pot of Ramen and Udon size roots. 😮 thanks for the heads up!
I am so guilty of this! I have been thinking about uppotting my monstera for a few weeks.
my leaves keep yellowing its odd not over watered either or root rot

Adding support sooner is better as controlling the growth direction becomes more difficult as the plant gets larger.
Does that 80-90% root volume rule apply to other aroids or just monstera?
It’s a safe bet with most other aroids.
Great content. Thanks for sharing. What's the name of the app you are measuring the light with, please?
One app for apple iPhone and a different one for android phones. Separate video.
Is there a plant light (sun, to check lighting)
you can get a light meter device or free app to check lighting levels. Anything is fine
how are monsteras with air pruning? the cloth or porous containers with holes
It’s fine 👍🏼

What do you recommend for plant pole ?
Plastic backed or full wire moss pole kept consistently moist. Or if ya can't be bothered keeping it moist at all times anything will do
Anything stable. For large form Monstera I don’t recommend moss poles.

They like to be a little rootbound
they tolerate being 100% rootbound better than other plants.

The pole I used isn't moss, its filled with coco coir. I like the way it looks and they're modular so i can extend it when its ready.
I killed a large monstera by re potting it. the root system was minimal and it rotted in no time.
