Lyrics
They said release 'Remote Control'
But we didn't want it on the label
They said, "Fly to Amsterdam"
The people laughed but the press went mad
Ooh ooh ooh someone's really smart
Ooh ooh ooh complete control, that's a laugh
On the last tour my mates couldn't get in
I'd open up the back door but they'd get run out again
At every hotel we was met by the Law
Come for the party - come to make sure!
Ooh ooh ooh have we done something wrong?
Ooh ooh ooh complete control, even over this song
They said we'd be artistically free
When we signed that bit of paper
They meant let's make a lotsa mon-ee
An' worry about it later
Ooh ooh ooh I'll never understand
Ooh ooh ooh complete control - lemme see your other hand!
All over the news spread fast
They're dirty, they're filthy
They ain't gonna last!
This is Joe Public speaking
I'm controlled in the body, controlled in the mind
Total
See-o-n control - that means you!
I am now 60 years old now. And this.... Was the MOST absolutely fantastic time of me life. It was utterly utterly glorious. We fuck* ing ruled.
I think u met my dad during this time ahaha
Completely agree, I am 62 and loved this era, The Sex Pistols The Clash The Buzzcocks and my favourites at that time Stiff Little Fingers....As the years went on Manic Street Preachers took over music for me (especially their early stuff) and The Enemy.... Also I would recommend you take a look at The K's who ive seen a few times, my first time was over 4 years ago, fantastic young band.
Agreed! I'm 64, 17 years old and a regular at Clash, buzzcocks, Joy division etc...wonderful times!!
im 60 this year . yes this ruled . but my mum n dad did not like what i liked so removed my hifi to find me next door with my mates blasting out what we loved to listen to , times to recall from living in feltham back in my teens .
❤❤❤ the Clash were the best thing that ever happened to me
This song gives off energy that is unmatched! Mick's talent on the guitar is so unbelievably underrated!
I agree with you!
greetings from southern Italy.
Mimmo - The Random -
if you like this you might like my brothers music. his name is Stu Morris.
Sentiments EXACTLY, this is the song which exemplifies your statement👍
Don't forget Machine Drum, Topper...
Never gets old I'm 59now and still love the clash only band that matter's ❤
The only band that matters to clash fan's, same thing could be said for any band that has a loyal following like the clash does, i remember talking to a guy on site years ago who was older than me and was telling me about how brilliant it was when he seen them in concert here in Glasgow, will never forget his description of 'we were all jumping about crazy fucking spitting on each other's face ! 😅
That's how Joe got Hepatitis, someone spat in his eye. That's what the line in London Calling " see we ain't got no high except for the one with the yellowy eye "
@@shonabeggs4640 cheers for the post and wee touch of info, appreciated 👍
Now THIS is how to do a rock video! I'm 65 now, and this band (and song) still gives me goosebumps.
Agree, think I've watched this video 1,000 since I just found it esp. the photos👍
Porque lo vives. The Clash han marcado una época. Casi todas son buenas
I'm going to be 68 this year...
Always 💪
How the hell does this have less than a million views?! The BEST SONG ever.
A. Monroe It's better the quality of the listeners, a small group of friends, to the mass of idiots ;)
Very true! I lived in Ferrara briefly many years ago when I was married!
Good, but Ferrara is my last name. I live in Palermo, Sicily :)
Oops! LOL!
A. Monroe :-))
The one and only Clash, I miss you Joe Strummer, RIP.
I miss him too xx
He was dead before I was born. I still miss him
No one rivals the Clash. You cant have a more politically active band. You cant get a better songwriting team than Strummer/Jones. Topper is an incredible drummer, Paul is bass dynamite, Mick is just a god at guitar. And Joe, hes an amazing singer, an amazing writer, and he just loves it so much. R.I.P Joe, R.I.P The Clash R.I.P Punk R.I.P Good music all together!
beautiful
Imagine the clash started today, they would be censored to oblivion
@@jamesgreen6648 they would get blamed for cultural appropriation considering their main influence was Reggae and Ska.
@@Soundeagle3456 Untrue!! Many reggae artists today revere the clash and their usage of the music. Music is meant to be SHARED, and even today's artists understand that. :)
@@jamesgreen6648 Honestly I doubt it, considering that back then students got in trouble for wearing black armbands to be against the Vietnam War.
Nowadays, freedom of expression is much more tolerated :D
This IS the favorite for many Clash fans. Just because mainstream rock radios do not play it doesn't mean it is not popular.
This is my favourite song of all time.My 17 year old son is called Strummer Clash Palace (palace is my surname)
This is exactly what The Clash were meant to sound like n all about. It's Their sound, sound of The Westway, Raw power, messy, 100mph, all in, something to say.
Fckn love it
@@andylowe1517 Best song ever written i don't give a rat's back side what anyone else says is better this is the best
It's in COMPLETE CONTROL
Mainstream rock as the Pistols might say, is a bold of bullocks. Anyone thinking this song or many others like "White Riot" are not more meaning ful, expressive and better- are wankers!
No band will ever be as awesome as The Clash!
The only song I can listen to over and over again, so much energy.
quite possibly the greatest song ever
Greatest version of it that's for sure, sums the clash up for me
The best live version of any song ever made. Period.
No doubt about it.
Correct.
The BEST SONG EVER written :P
+SafeEuropeanHome yes mate
When I want to play this song, this is the only version I ever put on. Makes you go fucking nuts!
Complete Control is the greatest song The Clash ever recorded! Played the single to death when it first came out! Still have it on vinyl and my I WANT COMPLETE CONTROL badge!!
This was one moment perhaps before you were born. This was one moment that encapsulated all that was pure and powerful, potent and perfect at the moment it existed. This is still one perfect moment, and time can't change this, and time can only give credence to how special this was.
Right on Mr Slime Dog
and so it was
Special indeed. Good times.
"Groovy Times", perhaps?
Me too, great times love chaos
A masterpiece of focused anger and controlled aggression
Look at the audience energy, totally involved in the performance and NOT ONE iPhone in sight. Wake up everyone😳
Nothing wrong with iPhones.
If they had them at the time they for sure would be using them at the show lmao.
Niqqa it was the 70s
😂
I hate going to gigs and you can't see the stage because of everyone videoing with their phones NOT LIVING IN THE MOMENT and ruining our experience
THIS MUSIC GETS TO YOUR VEINS AND GET YOU MOVING LIKE CRAZY! THE CLASH WERE THE BEST.
Were and always will be.
After The Jam..... Oh and the Sex Pistols..... Elvis Costello.... the list is endless....
The fill at 2:24 is one of the best I have ever heard on a drumkit. Topper is the absolute man!!
It is not widely known that Topper is an ultra-skilled drummer.
He is the strongest of all punk rock drummers.
The last part of this song (from about 2:15 on this version, which in my opinion isn't quite as good as the studio version) is just about my favourite bit of any rock song ever. Still gives me goosebumps after listening to it for 35 years. 35 years?!! Jesus!
It’s such a special song.
Definitely 💪 same here. This is how The Clash were meant to sound and transmit their message 💪🔥
You can add another 10yrs to that 💣💥
The Clash the best punkrock band ever!
The Clash was the real deal. 'Nough said.
The Clash gives me a hope to stay alive
I used to be like that too, just write three things that you are grateful for every day, it worked for me
This song doesn't happen without Topper. His drumming ability just constantly pushes the tune forward.
Listen to it... doesn't happen without the 4 of them, this is the clash at their fckn best
2:28 Just the way this band makes their way to the field. It just looks epic.
As a 18 year old punk rocker wen I bought this record, the video of this song sends shivers down my spine , and reminds how lucky I was to have witnessed this incredible era 😀
Superb eh 👍 screenshot of their story, brilliantly made. I wasn't there and it sends shivers down my spine every time
still sends the shivers down my spine
205 assholes will never get it. tossers
Still the only band that matters after so many years!
The Clash and Vevo are two things that should never go together, but what the hell...
And now we have a Sex Pistols Vevo.
+Ben Tate less of a surprise tbf
carmaj156 neither was the clash and CBS
carmaj156 best coment
The Clash and C.B.S? Want a bigger audience, compromise on your terms.
Can't remember how many times I saw the Clash, starting in 77 somewhere near Cambridge ... Joe we miss you !
The best live band I ever had the pleasure of watching... 40 years ago and it seems like yesterday !! Punk will never be dead ..
Wow And a week long at Bonds NYC seems like it was Yesterday, Now hitting 60 when I had just hit my 20's. . My Band was Always the CLASH
if you like this you might like my brothers music. his name is Stu Morris.
The best live version of any song ever made. Period.
drummer is tight af
managed to see them once on the Combat Rock tour - I made the mistake of standing 2 feet away from one of the amps when they kicked off with London Calling, I swear my ears are still ringing to this day! This song sums up the Clash IMO, one I'd play to someone who asked "what were the Clash like?"
andy p I only saw the Clash once too, on the Combat Rock Tour at the Brighton Centre. I'd give my right nut to revisit that night.
no mistake there dude . would have done the same thing =)
Me too
..
This version of Complete Control or White Man... what's my name live... clampdown live... Tommy gun, safe... see where we're going? This though n white man... card cheat haha
One of my first punk singles in 1977 still have the original and it still holds all that magic after all these years.
you only witness a band like this once in a lifetime
Unless you've seen The Clashed...
The Clash ... a group a legend ... immortal ... inimitable ... when I listen to him ... (it's almost a routine 😊) I let myself be carried away by his sound and the unique lyrics of his songs ❤️
Without doubt the greatest band , and in my old punk opinion this one of the finest songs of all time. Is it really 40 years, where has the time gone. Lucky enough to have seen them a number of times, always fantastic, miss those times kids with attitude, miss Joe, R.I.P.
Gary Thomas still the best
Still nothing since that gets the adrenaline goin like This complete control ... listening to the 4 of them individually n the collective n knowing THATS how the song was Meant to come across n how they were meant to sound n who they were gives ma some rush, every single time 👍💪
@@andylowe1517 So true, great band, songs and time.
Probably my favourite Clash song. So personal, so challenging to the status quo, and so ferocious. It doesn't hold back in its message and it's such a great punk rocker. That last minute, too, with the background vocals is downright ethereal.
Same here. The Clash catalogue is outstanding but if I had to pick one song, this is it.
This Live for me gives me fckn ✊️✊️
I'd do the 70's over again if I could. I had so much fun!
The real spirit of punk
Joe would have been 60 years old today. Props to one of the most important bands in the history of Rock & Roll.
Nowadays we need The Clash more than ever. Even more than 1977!!! Aaaaaarrrgggg!!!
My fav Clash tune of all time.
God bless The Clash 🫡 🎉❤
Was lucky enough to see them in Feb'78 at the Queensway Hall in Dunstable, UK. En core was 'White Riot' the older lads started a riot, windows were smashed, the cops were called. I was only 12 years old, fantastic, I've loved gigs ever since.
No bass player ever looked as cool as Paul!
my favourite Clash Song.. the rythm has a lot of energy that drives you crazy
It's meant to ✊️
I don't care. The best concert I ever saw. New Orleans Warehouse 1982.
This will not be beat
It's hard to explain, for those who were not around during that time, how very important and inspirational this band was. Rest in Peace, Saint Joe.
the best song ever in the history of music.
do not let anyone control you know matter what?FIGHT>FIGHT>FIGHT
🔥 THE CLASH FOREVER 🔥
This band is tight.
Topper Headon is such a fantastic drummer.
stands up to anything ever done ever
Still getting goosebumps 40 odd years later. The greatest punk song of all time and one of the best songs ever.
the music of our generation
RIP Joe. I love you and miss you SOUL mush and am so very very thankful for the twenty minutes we talked to each other........
How can I not love it ?
This group probably helped me become who I am. I always liked punk music. When i'm started listening 'The Clash' i didn't even know a single English word, but i fell in love with 'The Clash' ... My first meeting with the group was through movie 'hackers' where Matthew Lillard was in' the clash' T-shist.. I remember this T-shirt with the red logo of the group on white background.. I then thought - what a cool logo - what it means? Then happened The Clash of my brains with this music. Now i'm 37 and 20 yers of my life i'm 'The Clash' fan! Thank you great Joe Strummer! Rest in piece!
Unquestionably Joe Strummer is the most charismatic musical artist of his generation. The man's work was a clarion call against complacency and the status quo.
+Matthew Sproul - Freddie Mercury was far more charismatic :P Strummer might have been the most charismatic of the punk scene, sure, but there's far more music out there.
Have you watched Strummer explode on "Rudy Can't Fail"? As a performer it's Mercury, but as a performer and force of personality it's Joe.
The Clash amazing band. This is Joe Public speaking I am controlled in the body controlled in the mind.
Raw energy, what a band. Gutted I never got to see them
JOE STRUMMER 1952-2002
First, last, and only true rock and roll hero.
Cool, thanks.
Mick was 22 when he wrote this, one of the greatest punk songs ever. they had played all over europe and released multiple legendary singles and an all time LP by then. when I was 22, I was sleeping until noon, smoking weed all day and playing call of duty.
The Clash were awesome! I doubt few here really remember them! I was a kid when they Thin/Lizzie, and AC/DC and other 70's groups really did it big!
Rest In Peace Lee “Scratch” Perry one of my favorite songs by The Clash the song is a perfect song because it had everything.
1981-82 I went from being into Adam and the Ants to The Jam but in 1983 at age 14 I bought the first Clash album (still one of my favourite albums) and that was me hooked on them and punk. They had a healthy interest in other genres of music and diversified their sound album by album and like any band ahead of its time suffered both critically and financially
I've just finished re-reading The Story Of The Clash by Pat Gilbert, well worth a read
cadd1969 Me too. Age 13 in '83 and I bought 'The Clash' and 'London Calling'. Not my first albums, Blondie has that status but they remain my eternal favorite. No one else comes close.
cadd 1969: Redemption Song: The Ballad of Joe Strummer is a good read too.
Amy Lobenthal re London Calling, same year, 1983, I somehow found out that a guy my age in the same street had the vinyl of London Calling LP and I showed up on his doorstep, we'd never spoke before, and asked to borrow it and a friendship was born
one of my cousins had the original vinyl of things like the US import of the first Clash album, the original Metal Box by P.I.L (first ever band I saw live, 1983 again) and original of The Feeding Of The Five Thousand by Crass but around 1986 he had no money and phoned a record dealer who came to his house and bought his entire collection for under £10, jeez
re The Clash, I remember seeing Bankrobber on Top Of The Pops and was captivated and chatted about it in school the next day with someone I knew. Re buying the first LP, the first Clash single I bought I went into a record shop and saw one on the wall and bought it, got home and played it, it was The Magnificent Seven, and it totally threw me as I was expecting loud punk rock and was rather confused by what I was hearing
last Clash vinyl I bought was a second hand copy of Sandinista last year, only album I don't have on vinyl is London Calling, funnily enough. I think Combat Rock gets a raw deal and doesn't get the recognition it deserves
another book I recommend is Clothes, Music, Boys, the autobiography of Viv Albertine of The Slits
re Blondie, fantastic band :)
cadd1969 Oh your poor cousin! That was a travesty, yikes. I always loved the Clash because they could not really be pigeonholed into what some considered should be true punk. While I loved the Ramones (still do) you had groups like The Circle Jerks, Descendants and others that filled that loud, super fast playing sound. Joe just wanted to evolve and sometimes it worked and sometimes it did not. I did not care for Give 'Em Enough Rope' but that is only my humble opinion. Do you like any of the Mescaleros albums? Combat Rock is good, but the radio and Mtv only ever played Should I Stay or Should I Go? Not enough play time for the other songs, except Rock the Casbah of course. That books sounds really cool, I will check that out. Ah yes the one and only Blondie. I was asked if I died who or what would I come back as. Why Debbie Harry of course. :) Cheers!
Re the comment on Combat Rock being unrecognised (RUclips won't let me reply to that one): Yeah, the first side is amazing, but side 2 is weak. Only Atom Tan is a song that really is worthy of the Clash's immense talent and ability in my opinion
This is Joe Public speaking "im controlled in the body and controlled in the mind". Genius.
One of my favourite songs EVER
if you like this you might like my brothers music. his name is Stu Morris.
Same here, The Clash are spectacular
COME ON .......THE CLASH !!!!!!
if you like this you might like my brothers music. his name is Stu Morris.
The best Clash song, no group has ever come near them
Sublime perfection still after all these years.
This is The Clash
I'm 60.
Used to be a DJ.
Alternative. Popular and excellent at it.
1986 and I had been a Clash fan 8 years. Would play 3 or 4 tracks in my set. Younger fans - who missed out - would ask me about them.
"You know how incredible you think they were live? They were."
If you saw them you know.
If you didn't, it really doesn't translate as the vibe and electricity in the crowd was once a century.
They are Legends. Deservedly so.
They are now ranked up with Best Ever.
LC routinely vies with Revolver or Blonde on Blonde as Best LP of 20 C Rock Era.
I hope somehow that you create something in your generation at the same level of timeless, immortal, magnificence.
To witness something of such greatness is a thing all should experience.
The only band that mattered.
As he says with a DK icon for his profile picture?
+Mysterious Apocalypse What did you mean by your original comment?
+danielscissorhands You say that The Clash is the only band that matters, yet you have a Dead Kennedys icon for your profile picture.. I think that both mattered equally, just in different scenes, in different countries.
+Mysterious Apocalypse Oh of course I understood THAT. Sorry, someone else commented on another video about the Dead Kennedys supporting the police and I was thinking that was you and that the comment had been erased. Nevermind. Btw, my 2 favourite bands are probably The Clash and The Ramones.
danielscissorhands Love both of them also!
I saw them at Bond's in NYC, two nights. It was as great as it looks. Fantastic.
so much energy going in to the crowd, amazing
Greatest punk song ever written. Period.
Always in my mind Joe!!
the favorite band i've seen
top favorite song of all time
Graham King same
fucu yes we'll,,,,,,that and the prisoner !!!!!!! Oh and white man in Hammersmith palla,,,,,,,,oh don't get me started !!!!!!!
White Man in Hammersmith Palais
The Clash. Genius. British. Perfect. Love forever. Rock on!
Clash's best song, in my opinion! Am partial to the first album version, but I get chills from the live as well. Clash as relevant as ever in the age of Trump and wave of rich-guy conservatism infesting the West (and East)! Anger can be power. But some information and sympathy for struggling people is its basis, and the Clash taught me this.
Childe Harold yes
I agree man, but the British Labour Party hates us know.
@Jim Bo Twat
Obama is a rich guy who was opposed to gay marriage, Bill Clinton is a rich guy whose presidency is conservative by today's standards, Al Gore is a rich guy. Trump is the first president to laude LGBTQ rights to applause from his base. Who is the bad guy?
@Jim Bo Joe wouldn't get behind any American politician . He knew they were in it for themselves and the power they could wield . You should probably listen longer and harder !
wish it were 1977---man they kick ass live with this
I saw the Clash back in 1983 at the US FESTIVAL 83. They closed the night and i became a fan. I became a over the road trucker in 2003 and the this song became my favorite, it still gives me goosebumps.
Absolute legends, my hero's.
Who is still listening in January 2020 ?
fuckin awesome man!!!! THE CLASH still got me bouncing round my room at 51 years of age!! I play this and its 1977 and I'm 11 years old again ,unlike other bands from this era they were not only than the best punk rock band around, they were the best punk ,reggae ,dub, rockabilly, and ska band around, with all this and funk as well they are a timeless act who still have that crooked beat.Thank you The Clash for making my childhood youth so exciting.
Many bands claim to be the best ever, but know-one comes near the Clash... After nearly 37 years and witnessing loads of live concerts.. Long live the CLASH !!!
Saw them on Hastings Pier in 1977 - first gig I'd been to! Still the best, and I don't expect I'll see anyone better. The intro on here still gives me the chills no matter how many times I hear it!
Shetland Bull Hi ! I did too ! The Lu's ( French girl punk band ) were support 🎸 We stood / danced on a table in the Crowd !
Cheers ! 😎 🎩
*BACK TO THE OLDSCHOOL*
Punk is not dead🐺🏴☠️🏴♥️
punk will never die!

"complete control" is delivereded with humour, terror and fearless conviction, is melodic, I like Clash Lyrics
"Terror and fearless conviction" yes, that is evident. But where is the 'humor'? They didn't display much in that vein until "London Calling" LP (and even then only on a couple of tracks).
One of the best bands ever 🔥🔥🔥
the clash forever!
Still !!! The only band that matters 👊
I also never saw the clash
this video highlights their NYC appearance in 1981 at Bonds. I was 12 years old. I couldn't get into the venue. I wished I could
clash will rule, forever
RIP Joe Strummer
Barbara Misuraca I was 15, and got in twice, nobody was checking I.Ds you might have gotten in!
I feel your pre-teen angst ,girl !
Greatest Sound in the fckin world...
One of my 150 favourite Clash songs.
Hahaha! Same here...
