  • In this video you'll learn 4 quick, simple techniques you can use to soothe your crying baby. It's amazing how well these techniques work, even when it feels like nothing you do will get your baby to settle.
    As parents, a crying baby is can be quite distressing, and it's even more stressful if we're unable to soothe them. But often all it takes is holding them a certain way, or putting them in a particular position that they find calming, to instantly get your baby to stop crying.
    It's also important to know that all babies do go through a period of fussiness at two weeks of age, which generally peaks at around six to eight weeks of age and resolves by three to four months.
    During this time of fussiness, they often cry for no apparent reason and can be extremely difficult to soothe. Even things like feeding (which usually helps calm crying newborns), don't work to soothe them. This is where the techniques you'll learn in this video can be particularly helpful.
    If you're struggling to get your baby to stop crying no matter what you do, make sure you check out the video and give these baby soothing techniques a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!

      For anyone else dealing with this -- try the "Halo" Swaddler!!
      It allows for their arms to be either wrapped up or free to console themselves with. It's really the main swaddle we use now, because it's so much easier to slowly transition out of without startling him (unless they've been soiled and need a wash, then we resort to a standard swaddle blanket)!

    Not exactly a soothing method and no one seems to know this one, but it really helps us when our newborn reaches the level of crying that takes 5-10 mins to calm down when using Emma's above methods. My husband discovered that holding baby tighly in his arms (cradle or chest to chest) and doing a box squat (using a bed as the "box" in case you lose balance) two or three times works to sort of "snap" her out of the crying fit. She suddenly goes from screaming to quiet and calmer.
    Then he'd move on to the other soothing methods like in the videos, or address the reason why she was crying in the first place (hungry, overtired, etc).
    So if your baby is crying uncontrollably and the soothing methods in Emma's videos take too long to calm them, this might be a good way to speed up the calming down phase and get to the soothing phase quicker.
    My midwife also gave us a tip that sometimes walking out in the cold suddenly for a few seconds helps do the same effect as well. So I guess it's sort of like a gentle way of "shocking" baby back to her senses, sort of like how you'd slap a hysterical person in the face 😂

    Definitely works! My daughter loves it when I press my lips to her ear and shush. I think the skin to skin, plus the warmth of my breath, plus how LOUD it is, all works to instantly soothe her. She'll go from screaming to cuddling in seconds sometimes.

    I would like to add that in Dr. Harvey Karp’s book “Happiest Baby on the Block” that the 5 S’s are traditionally done in the order she mentioned, though he emphasizes that every baby has a special combination of those 5 S’s that will need to be done in a certain order specific to the individual baby. Some babies want a pacifier first while some start to settle down with a swaddle first in the combo. He says in his book that it’s like building a tiered cake, and the strongest wants/needs support the other needs specific to the baby’s personal taste! Remember that it takes time to learn what a new baby wants, and it will be okay! I hope this helps someone out there!

    Thank you for these tips!! Something I found was that I was trying different techniques too quickly. I learned to stick with the technique for a solid minute or two before trying something different to sooth. It takes my baby a minute to "reset". If I slowed down, a lot of times it was working but I changed things too quickly for it to work. Good luck mamas ❤️

She now just turned 5 months and it took FaceTime everyday and small increments of time to have her smile and now be able to hold her after many visits of her crying tears when she looked at me in person. Her poor parents only have me to give them a break! You give me lots of great advice and I thank you for that! Now to get her to nap longer than her catnaps of 30 min! 💗

    Hey Emma thank you for this GREAT video. I am now roadtripping with my almost 3-month old. Have you any tips for calming a crying baby when in the car,

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  2 года назад +8

      HI @Amila Hodzic road tripping with a little one can be hard!
      Some of the things I find helpful during car rides are:
      - Pacifier - At this age the pacifier can help soothe the bub and help them fall asleep if they are tired.
      - Variety of Toys - If your little one is crying because they are bored, give your little one a single toy to play with. When your little one has finished exploring/playing with the toy swap it with a different toy. At this age they can't really hold the toy, so if possible it is great to have someone beside them to hold the toys.
      - Portable white noise machine or "shushing" - If your little one is crying because they are tired using a white noise machine or shushing can help them fall asleep. I do find bub's generally find it easier to fall asleep if no one is sitting with them and the window is blocked/covered as this limits distractions.
      Hope that helps and have a great road trip!

    My daughter and son-in-law call me magic grandma. The only thing I do different than what they do is I use the rocking chair it’s a rocking recliner. I put a pillow on each side for my arm won’t get tired and on my back so I’m not so far back and I just rock the little one and he loves it. You know a few times. I got a change position if he wiggles because if he wiggles I know he’s got a burp. And just now four months later they are finally taking my lead.❤

    Hi emma, can we interact with babies in two languages for eg. English and a native language? Will it cause confusion in babies ? Can you please make a video on this topic?

    • @topperhatschire
      @topperhatschire 2 года назад +2

      This is more of a question for a speech therapist. No it will not confuse them but it does sometimes delay the onset of speech as baby is learning two sets of sounds at once

    • @mihaelafarkas9750
      @mihaelafarkas9750 2 года назад +3

      Look for the OPOL method (one parent, one language). We used it and our daughter can now successfully speak 3 languages, because both parents and one of the grandma's spoke a different language to the baby since she was born.

    • @Squintina
      @Squintina 2 года назад +2

      Definitely confer with a speech therapist. My parents are multilingual and for my older brother they did dual language (French and Portuguese, we lived in France) and he ended up speaking gibberish - nothing that resembled either language and was extremely delayed and their pediatrician ended up telling them to stick to 1 language because it was going to delay his schooling. So they did. I wasn't affected since they were still doing monolingual for him when I was a baby.
      Then my little brother, it was even worse because now my parents would speak Portuguese to each other and the baby, but would speak in French to us (even if baby bro was around), my father would put on French kids' music videos for him, but would put on American TV shows (because we lived in the US). Mass confusion galore! So the same thing happened - all gibberish!!! He had to go to a special speech therapist and when it was time to start school, he still was speaking a mix of English and gibberish at the age of 5-6! So they had to find one that could accommodate his special speech needs. Thankfully his classmates loved him.
      Both of them speak fine now - though neither one speaks Portuguese beyond the absolute basics. Confused all for nothing.

But at what age do we stop spoiling them to prevent them from turning into spoiled little assholes? When should a child learn it is not at the center of the universe?

    • @zooeyellis3864

      Hi, I’m a psychotherapist and I find that children of any age always benefit from being treated with gentleness and empathy by their parents. There is no limit! Being encouraged to have empathy for others goes hand in hand with this teaching- for example, saying to a child, “your friend looks upset- what can we do to help?”
      It’s actually a myth that it’s possible to spoil a child with too much love, gentleness, or empathy- receiving these things helps us learn to how to give them to others! I hope this helps you and congratulations on being loving parents to your new baby

    what about neuro-crying? My granddaughter at about 4 months started screaming, she doesn't cry, it sounds like the kind of cry that is pure pain. (she'll be 7 months this week) She doesn't sleep more than 45 minutes at a time 24/7 and she does this back bend thing, like a cat arching its back but opposite, like a back bend a gymnast does. We try bouncer and jumpy and tummy time and stroller and car and rocking and walking and she just keeps screaming. Her pedi has given her lots of exams and can't find anything physical. She has had only breast milk. A couple weeks ago they tried a hypoallergenic formula and she slept one night until 4 a.m. but that only happened once. She's gone to the ER twice with her but like my dogs going to the vet, when she gets there the scream crying doesn't present. I've only found one article on this neuro-crying but it sure sounds like it might be it. The treatment seems to be gabapentin so we have some hope, but just wondering if you have heard of this?

    • @truthinlovemama

      The scream crying, inability to sleep, and back arching indicate a lot of pain. Poor thing! I have heard about other babies going through similar symptoms and that gabapentin can help. Before using such a strong medication though, have the pediatricians tried anything for acid reflux? A lot of babies like this seem to have gut issues causing their pain. Praying for healing and comfort 🙏🏻

      Hope ur grandchild is doing well, she already will be 7 or more now... I am curious to know wether she cries now or not.
      I am Mom of two and half month old baby. My baby does the same things like ur child. Arches his back and cries nonstop, He sheds lots of tears too. And i do not know what his problem is.

      @@Faizidogar200 once she started eating real food, she's gotten better and she only wakes up two or three times a night now and on occasion once a night. The doctor never concluded what it might be, she's just kind of grown out of it. She just cries regular now, not that screaming. It was rough for sure, but it's much better now, she'll be 11 months at the end of the month, one-year-old in January. Hopefully your little guy will grow out of it as well but I know how absolutely difficult it is. There is light at the end of the tunnel though so hang in there!

      We had a night like this and I still don’t know what it was but laying her on her side and feeding her helped and eventually got it to stop. Maybe some gripe water?

    Pacifier not good for babies ..why you suggesting that ...

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  11 месяцев назад +4

      Because they are good for babies. The AAP even suggest introducing them after breastfeeding is established (if that’s what the parent is doing) to reduce the risk of SIDS.
      They are also great for calming babies, particularly newborns.
      What’s not good about pacifiers is continuing to use them past 4 years of age, due to potential oral changes they can cause. But most kids naturally stop using a pacifier between 2-4 years. Also you can minimise this risk by ensuring the toddler only has the pacifier for nap times and not all day.
