Dogs are the very best friends. I just lost my Bella (who looked a lot like Camper) I had her for nine yrs. After 5 days, I went to the shelter and someone was bringing a sweet pretty lab mix back. This dog laid on my feet and licked my leg. My search was over. He never made it back to the lockup. My most wonderful day after 5 awful days. I am so blessed. I related a lot to what you said about loneliness and the importance of maintaining relationships. As a truck driver, that has been especially difficult and I think of it as a type of psychological inertia. You get so used to being alone that it becomes much more difficult to pursue relationships. That, and the very long hours and very limited time away from the truck are just prohibitive. On a more positive note, I also really appreciated your suggestions about being out in a wide open space alone. There was a great episode of Hidden Brain on NPR where they discussed the concept of awe, and I think that's what you were tapping into. When I'm home in Chicago, I love taking my cold plunges alone in Lake Michigan, and experiencing the wonder as I look out over the endless expanse of the lake. It fills me with this beautiful feeling that really has been healing for me. Love to you and the boys!! ❤❤

When I lived in Desert Hot Springs in 2010, I met a guy who lived in this place. His aunt owned it at the time and I used to go there and use the hot tub as well as swim in that large natural pool…. that place was so awesome. I heard they sold the place a few years ago and it was such a trip to watch your video and see what’s happened to the place which is now called bubbling wells ranch.
That is a good way to test a relationship living with your boyfriend in a van with 2 dogs for a week. The sponsor AD was so cute with the dogs. I like when you make them talk. I have made my dogs talk after seeing you do it.

Stable community and relationships in vanlife is definitely one of the most challenging parts, seems to be why a lot of people end up quitting vanlife. You just gotta be intentional about getting out there and meeting people and put in a little extra effort to make things work.

Years ago, I went to some Indian Reservation in Palm Springs with Palms like what you are walking around. I was blown away. I have never seen anything like them since. It's definitely a unique environment.

Highway 1 goes right through my hometown of Guadalupe California. Did you know that Cecille B. Demille filmed the first Ten Commandments (1923) in the dunes at Guadalupe Beach? He had the largest movie set ever, built there. So large that he had his people deconstruct it and buried in the dunes. He kept the location a secret. People are still looking for it to this day. Just giving my tiny town a shout out. 🙂

Hi Nikki! I've been following you for a while and you’re truly inspirational! I know how challenging it is to find someone who matches your lifestyle. I'm an expat in Thailand and have had the same issue for years, so I can’t imagine how hard it can be while full-time traveling and working in a van. Highway 1 goes right through my hometown of Guadalupe California. Did you know that Cecille B. Demille filmed the first Ten Commandments (1923) in the dunes at Guadalupe Beach? He had the largest movie set ever, built there. So large that he had his people deconstruct it and buried in the dunes. He kept the location a secret. People are still looking for it to this day. Just giving my tiny town a shout out. 🙂
