This is horrifying and heartbreaking at the same time. Jane is pitiful, obviously can't handle growing old and not being the cute little girl star anymore. Never got over losing daddy.
"Dale Russell Sullivan" I was so young when I saw this movie on TV. I never got any idea from the movie that Jane and Blanche's father died (maybe that he was living far away) even though it should be obvious when the Jane and Blanche argue about which of them obtained the house. Come to think of it regarding that, I wonder which one was right: Did Blanche buy the house for Jane and herself, or did their dad buy the house for Jane only?
@L Martinez ,,I think Blanche bought the house when she was a famous star. That may have been one of the reasons for the jealousy Jane felt. Jane told Edwin that she lost her daddy when she was young, I don't think she ever got over him being gone. It's like she had arrested development and still thought of herself as daddy's little girl. She was mean but pitiful all at the same time😟
Victor was superb in this film!!! LOL when he and his mother talk about his qualifications to get a job! He says "what qualifications?" so sarcastically that it is hilarious!!
Notice how Bette starts and ends the song with her feet in I think it's 3rd position for ballet? Not many actresses would have put in such a small detail--Bette was not only very detail-oriented, she studied dance for many years.
Great performances in a great movie. His expression clearly says tells that he knows she’s crazy but he needs the money and he’ll indulge her insanity to get it.
Yes, and aside from his iconic role as King Tut in "Batman", he turned in a splendid performance as President William Taft in the TV mini-series "Backstairs at the White House".
Interesting trivia, Frank De Vol, who wrote the melody for this song, also wrote the Brady Bunch theme. Also Victor Buono was only 24 when this was filmed and this was his first credited role.
What a perfect scene all the way around. Victor was so funny with his glances. :D He was the best. And the theater audience all went wooo hooooo when Bette showed her shapely legs.
I'm looking for the scene where Victor is in the wheelchair with the doll. Bette let's out the best scream in a movie ever ! I used to replay that scream and die laughing.
Mario.....it is true Joan Crawford lobbied for the academy members not to vote for her...though Ann Bancroft was outstanding winning for The Miracle Worker
What everyone else on this thread said. Also, believe it or not, many in Hollywood were put-off by Bette's make-up for Jane. (this was in 1962) In addition the storyline was not seen as particularly edifying compared to the Miracle Worker Helen Keller (d. 1968) was still alive and many people were impressed with what she had done with her life.
Anne Bancroft was truly untouchable in "The Miracle Worker". Men were crying during the climactic scene when her character finally gets through to the young Helen Keller. The problem for Bette that year (no, contrary to popular belief and "Feud", Joan Crawford and Hedda Hopper did not sway Academy votes against her) was that "Baby Jane" was so campy when compared to "The Miracle Worker". Some critics even called it a "dark comedy"! Under normal circumstances, perhaps Bette would have won, but Anne hit a grand slam out of the ballpark.
AA missed out on this one. All three leads deserved AA for their work here. The screenplay, too. Movies with seemingly normal people who have lost their place in life will always make great movies because we all lose a little of what we were over a long period of time.
It was a surprise to me that I remembered this scene (I don't recall what today is or was) and even the opening line of the song. The mind is a quirky place, and I'm kind of glad that I only live in mine occasionally - the rest of the time I'm right out of there. Thanks for this video post. Now I have to remember to get hold of a copy to see the whole film again.
when I was 5 years old, my mother took us three kids to a huge old time theater in downtown Los Angeles to see this movie. I was horrified when this sent started.
Bette Davis was brilliant in this role, but she wasn't "robbed" of an Oscar; Anne Bancroft deserved it that year. If you haven't seen The Miracle Worker, watch it.
Bette , you were such a LOCK for the Best Actress award! I miscarriage of Justice. No disrespect to Ann Bancroft . Bette was Betterand unbeatable ❤R.I.P. to you both!!
Madonna wasn't a child star. she a self made millionaire with the title of being the most successful single pop female in pop music history. She is the Queen of pop music.
She definitely deserved it! It's pretty much accepted that Joan Crawford used her influence to talk to Academy members and lobby against Davis. But even if that wasn't true, Anne Bancroft (who took the Oscar and also did a great performance) was younger and more upcoming. At the time, people thought Davis was getting too old to do many more successful movies.
She's supposed to sound bad. Her character thinks she hasn't changed since she was a child performer, so in her mind her voice is good when in actuality she's straining to hit the notes and sing in general.
@@JohnDoe-gk7ok The movie, I think, was trying to hit home a harsh reality in Hollywood at the time. Most child actors and actresses were hired for their "cuteness" rather than for any acting abilities. Many of them also became deluded into thinking they could continue their careers as adults. When they could not, many descended into alcohol and drug abuse, depression, and even suicide.
Priceless expressions on Victor Buono's face; he got an academy award nominition for this. Such a great actor.
Bette Davis should have won the Academy Award that year.
Lol he's thinking seriously.
Indeed he was.
Bette was robbed of the award
He was nominated for best supporting actor. He played that character amazingly! I instantly knew that guy, haha.
His combination of indulgence and annoyance is priceless.
Those various looks of pure contempt Victor Buono is giving, are absolutely legendary!!
She absolutely deserved the Oscar for this
💯

The acting of both these ladies is superb but Davis deserved that Oscar, outstanding
Victor Buono was a great addition to the cast. You needed some offbeat people to play off the sisters.
Blanche must be thinking, "Damn Jane is really trippin' now". LMFAO!!!!!!! The dance is the best part!
Notice how Bette starts and ends the song with her feet in I think it's 3rd position for ballet? Not many actresses would have put in such a small detail--Bette was not only very detail-oriented, she studied dance for many years.
When I saw this for the first time I thought this was an Oscar worthy performance by Victor Buono. It was.
Great performances in a great movie. His expression clearly says tells that he knows she’s crazy but he needs the money and he’ll indulge her insanity to get it.
A beautiful soprano voice.....
Victor Buono.. such a great actor and cheated out of a full life at age 42. My second fovorite role of his... Jim's dad on Taxi.
Yes, and aside from his iconic role as King Tut in "Batman", he turned in a splendid performance as President William Taft in the TV mini-series "Backstairs at the White House".
Such a small cast for this film and yet so powerful and brilliant you are captivated just by Bette alone through out the whole movie.
Interesting trivia, Frank De Vol, who wrote the melody for this song, also wrote the Brady Bunch theme.

Amazing trivia !

i always thought her the greatest actress hollywood ever had and this role proves it. the indomitable, unstoppable ms betty davis rip
I'm looking for the scene where Victor is in the wheelchair with the doll. Bette let's out the best scream in a movie ever ! I used to replay that scream and die laughing.
That was awesome
Don`t know how she didn`t win the Oscar that year
Mario Torrez Quant cuz Anne was to. Me slightly better although I think Davis did deserve it more Anne was just that Extra

Does anyone else die laughing when Jane starts dancing? XD!! If I were that pianist I would have fallen off my chair.
0:25 that's wonderful... love his deadpan sarcasm

Can you imagine contemporary actors doing this movie? I don't think so. They wouldn't be able to humble themselves enough to do it.
Never
The only one who could do it would be Meryl Streep.
My favorite film and actress of all time ❤️💜💙♥️💗💖💞💕
Yea mean she killed it and served it for din din

Does anyone else think Jane looks adorable at 1:54? Just me?
Yes! Just viewed it. You are overwhelmingly true! But then it gets sad........
Absolutely Wonderful!! Thank you so much for posting this. I have wanted this on RUclips so long! I love this song!
I think is one of the best Better Davis' performances.
ICONIC!! SIMPLY ICONIC!!!!
Victor Buono is the best. ❤️
I sing almost as well. Great dancing.
Bette Davis was robbed! She definitely deserved the Oscar.
when I was 5 years old, my mother took us three kids to a huge old time theater in downtown Los Angeles to see this movie. I was horrified when this sent started.
@malvip , hilarious. And Baby Jane's lusty singing can no doubt be heard in every corner of that house.
Noticed during her dancing what shapely legs Bette Davis had!
Bette actually had a good figure.
It's wonderful 😂
She should have tied the Oscar Best Actress with Ann Bancroft
That is arguable, yes. The one year that there WAS a tie, with Barbra Streisand and Katherine Hepburn, neither one really deserved it.
Bette Davis was brilliant in this role, but she wasn't "robbed" of an Oscar; Anne Bancroft deserved it that year. If you haven't seen The Miracle Worker, watch it.
Wonderful expression of the pianist's discreetly squeemish face...."what a horrible looking woman time warped in her old time"
hey, its Texas Senator Ted Cruz !
Timothy Frantz 😄😄😄😄
Lol
👍👍👍
So he was the Zodiac Killer and Actor. Dude must be tired lol
And Baby Jane was Hillary on Election Night 2016.
Bette , you were such a LOCK for the Best Actress award! I miscarriage of Justice. No disrespect to Ann Bancroft . Bette was Betterand unbeatable ❤R.I.P. to you both!!
When I first watched this scene, I really thought he was gonna throw up. Lol
The ultimate accolade should have gone to Victor Bueno, so very underestimated.
and norma bates is the future baby jane. she is a broadway singer and also crazy!
Baby Jane does exist in real life.....she calls herself by the name of Madonna!! XDD
Maria Santiago Oh snap!
Madonna wasn't a child star. she a self made millionaire with the title of being the most successful single pop female in pop music history. She is the Queen of pop music.
Maria Santiago Hilarious 😀
Maria Santiago I wish I could like that comment 1000 times! Hilarious and true.
I wish I could do my reaction on video to your comment.
Madonna was amazing here
Right now, Baby Jane would look way better than Madonna.
telling me bettie didn't get an award for this !!!!!! that is rude off Hollywood so disrespectful room bettie Davies great best time acting talent

@@AndrewMacLaineBette already had 2 Oscars. For Dangerous 1936 and Jezebel 1939.
There's nothing like it
Mario,Bette lost because of 2 C words,Joan and Hedda. Watch Feud:Bette and Joan.
Blanche doesn't seem delighted.
this really is my sister and i am blanche
Mine kara Don't tell Jane about your youtube account.
mercerdamon Hhhhhaaa!!! 🙏
Jane performs her old act.
Victor Bueno was a Great but never fully recognised.
And he died before he could get a chance to perhaps further himself.
The way Victor looks at Bette's legs! LOL I think he secretly fancied her! LOL 🙂
house of wax
does he make anyone else think of Alec Baldwin?
jeff hyder Victor was 1000 times a better actor than that disgusting pig Alec Baldwin, and he was 1000 times more intelligent as well.
nina they were probably talkin about the way he looks not his acting ability, but I thought he looked like john goodman in some scenes
My sister
yeah I said that too , Madonna copies bettie alot in her style , image, personality
Hunter Biden should try this trick 😮
Baby Jane actually looks like Dr. Jill on the campaign trail.
This is what happens when you've lost a hold on reality, like Hillary Clinton has.
austin teutsch 🤣🤣🤣
So original
she looks like hillery
That's supposed to be a burn?
Is this what a conservative NPC sounds like?
@@dlam2864 You just insulted Jane.
Lol
But she cant sing
She's supposed to sound bad. Her character thinks she hasn't changed since she was a child performer, so in her mind her voice is good when in actuality she's straining to hit the notes and sing in general.
What a stupid comment, of course she can't sing That's the whole point!
That’s the point. She is completely deluded.
