I can hear a fly buzzing in the next room when its quiet; but when there is a lot of background noise I can't follow

Over here we are studying Auditory processing disorder, it seems to me that it is not something as well known and studied as it should be. As I read your story, I associated this disorder somewhat. I just showed this to my mom. She dismissed it saying its because im always not paying attention.
I'm 17 years old, and I think I have the high frequency loss thing. I'm often having trouble what my parents are saying even though they're right in front of me. I didn't have this problem before... It can't be that I have hearing loss this early, no?
Actually it is not the age which decides it but rather what frequency of sound you are exposed to . If you are often exposed to loud noises then you may lose some of your hearing
Have you ever tried doing any hearing tests online?
I’m 20 and somewhat have trouble understanding some people, I have taken many online hearing tests and always results in the normal hearing range. I don’t have trouble hearing high pitches which is weird because I have a history of loud noise exposure

@@Infxmous7 Same man, I'm convinced I'm partially deaf sometimes when in a conversation as their words blur out to me yet I have the average 19 year old hearing.
This is EXACTLY my symptoms, I can hear but I don’t understand, I even withdraw from crowds because of the background *NOISE*! This I know is why my being antisocial is from my compromised hearing!

My hearing loss comes from when I was in Vietnam in 1966-67. It can be quite in a room and I still don`t know what your saying.

It's really confusing.
I do hear well.
The problem is, sometimes, randomly, I would hear somebody, hear their voices, know they spoke to me, but have no idea of what they just said.
It just sound like "uuooooouuuuu" I mean there is no syllabe it's just inintelligible.
Or sometimes, I do understand but what I heard has nothing to do with what they actually said.
I hear phonetically close enough words, but not what they actually said. Since I'm french it's hard to give an actual exemple, I'm sorry.
Oh and I have trouble understanding what people say when there is too much noise and the TV HAS to be above an certain volume, otherwise I have to actively try to understand what they say (when It's too low the TV sound feel exactly like the modified audio the Doctor made in this video) It is tiring.
Because of those I had countless arguments with my Mom.
Because Mom is convinced that I do hear and I'm just faking. She doesn't get mad for it anymore but back then she would get mad and refuse to repeat what she said and expect me to obey to something I never understood. And when I would try to guess what she said and get it right she would just dismiss me and say "See? You are just playing with me" or something along those lines.
And when I am at school and those episode happens, I can work around it IF I see the lips of the person talking. When I can feel like I'm missing out I watch their lips and things make sense.
The problem is that it happens randomly, once in the while, with no consistency, but often enough to make me worry a bit.
And with the covid it's annoying because everyone wear mask and I can't watch people's lips anymore :-( .

I was hoping he would explain something like this. I've not heard of Auditory Processing Disorder and have looked it up in Wikipedia. I first decided I might have this condition in my late 20s and as I grow older - I'm currently 80 - I suspect this syndrome might be getting worse. Thank you so much for mentioned it.
@@sogley You're welcome! I became aware of my problem 20 years ago. It hasn't helped me get through to doctors, though. They don't ask what it means. I bring my spouse to all appointments, and that helps. Knowing that I have APD has helped. I no longer *blame myself.*

This isn’t always an issue of hearing loss. If you have ADHD, you may also have auditory processing disorder. If you’re not fully attentive, people’s speech may sound like gibberish or you may say “what?” And then mid-way through repeating themselves, it finally clicks and you finally process what they initially said.
I really wish the interviewer was using a better quality of microphone. There was a lot of distortion coming through which made it more difficult to hear. My guess is that it was a $15 uni directional mic whereas for a RUclips video you need a $60 or preferably a $100 one.

First you need to get your hearing checked. Some places will do a hearing test for free (like Costco). If you do have hearing loss at a level that qualifies you for hearing aids, invest in the best ones you can afford. Even the "cheap" ones are expensive, though, if your insurance doesn't cover them. If you do get them, it will take you some time to adjust to them ... things will sound weird at first because you're not used to hearing things in those ranges again, so it will take a few fittings to get them fine tuned for you. Even the best ones aren't perfect, but they can be helpful in helping you understand speech better. Wearing them regularly is best, or else you will never get used to them and things will never sound right when you do wear them. Good luck!
