    Nice repair!
    I have done a few hundred of those over the years. One thing I do differently is after fixing the crack I will smooth it out and put about a 3"x5"x 1/4" patch over it to spread out the pressure from the deck support. Before I started doing that I had 1 boat come back twice.

      absolutely the way to "fix it right". Without a patch it will do the same thing, especially with those welds on aluminum.

    Definitely agree with Wood and Metal workshop about the overlay plate. First thing I said to myself when you started, hope he puts a plate over the weld. Remember- A LITTLE BIT OF PAINT COVERS A MULTITUDE OF SIN! Maybe you shouldn't have criticized the other guys weld so bad.

    That is a huge stress concentration i can see why it punched thru. It would have been a better design if they had angled that lower end too and welded it on in a patch. It would have spread the load and allowed for some vertical flex in the bracket. Hindsight! You got it better than new anyways.

      OR, had a foot welded to the bracket maybe 1x4 then weld it to the tube

    Put soap on the cut off disc so it won't clog up your
    Disc during the cut off.

    Nice job you did a better job crawling under the boat on the trailer than "welder "that welded it in a controlled environment.

    I think a repad with rounded corners between the toon and the angle would be a good thing. Soread the load out over a larger area.

    If you go to your shop and look at the cutting disc`s on your shelf, maybe half will say "iron free" they are MADE for cutting Aluminum, and in a pinch, those made for stone are also iron free, but they do hold up as well as regular cutting disc`s.

    • @DoRiteFabrication
      @DoRiteFabrication  3 года назад

      The iron is not the only issue with abrasive cut off wheels. Typically they shouldn't be used.

    Get some lights on that thing dude!
    I see a cutout on the right rear panel were there was previously a light.
    Also a registration sticker.
    We don't want to hear about Jim getting stopped while on the lake for equipment violations by the Florida FWC Wardens.

    I'm suspicious of that chickenfeed weld on the second bracket. The weld you fixed was pretty clean, and as near as I could tell all the other bracket welds looked clean. I think you just did the second leak repair in that pontoon. The first one happened on the next bracket over. (Too bad you haven't qualified Junior on welding aluminum yet. He would have fit under there A LOT easier than you did! :-)

    LOVE the simplicity, whole lot less to be concerned with, did ya inspect the OTHER possible problem weld locations while there??

    You did a better job welding aluminum then I could but ya slammed the one weld then you slammed your weld ! Lmao. That’s one bad thing about aluminum, it gets fatigued really easy !

      Down at the bottom right of the image window (at least on a PC) there is a little rectangle that says "CC". Click it. It toggles on and off, and remembers from one video to the next.

    Sorry, but that's a design defect. You'd think they would have fixed it before selling boats to the public.

    • @johnalexander2349
      @johnalexander2349 3 года назад +2

      @@DoRiteFabrication I guess 1982 is before Lotus showed the world how to use aluminium. On the other hand, the last time a fighter plane had a flaw like that was WWI.
