Does Xfinity Deserve All the Hate?

  • It was the best of ISPs, it was the worst of ISPs; it was the fastest, no, the slowest; it was the biggest in the country, but maybe the smallest in our hearts. Today, it’s the Tale of Two Xfinities, and we’re going to try to figure out how an Internet Service Provider can be so wonderful to so many people, and so infuriating to others. And if you’re having a rough time with Xfinity, I’m going to give you my ideas on what you might do about it.
    ----------
Read our FULL Xfinity reviews here:
    www.reviews.org/internet-serv...
    www.reviews.org/tv-service/co...
    ----------
    About Xfinity:
    - One of the biggest ISPs out there.
    - Scored a 61 on the ACSI Satisfaction Report. Puts it in the middle of the pack. The entire industry struggles, as we all know. But when we see Verizon Fios posting a score of 70, we know that it is possible to improve.
So, how does a score get brought down to 61?
First, let’s talk about what Xfinity advertises, as far as speeds and prices. Xfinity offers speeds from 15 Mbps to a whopping 2 Gbps (this will depend on your area). Most of us will probably see speed offerings up to 100 or 250 Mbps. But do you get what you pay for? Well, according to the FCC … yes. And then some. As for price, first, you have to know your region: East, Central, West, because the pricing varies between regions. Regardless, you’ll pay anywhere from about $30/mo for the starter plan, up to $70/mo for gigabit internet. ($300/mo for that two-gig plan, if that’s what you’re into). In my opinion that pricing ain’t bad. Of course, the advertised prices are what you’ll pay for the first year or two of a contract, and it may go up after that, so make sure you check the fine print before you get too excited. If you feel like bundling with TV, Phone (do you still have one of those?), or Home Security you can save even more.
So for a reasonable price you’re getting good to great speeds, and even better than that (if the FCC is to be believed).
So why all the hate?...two reasons.
    - (1) Customer service. It’s hard to measure customer service results scientifically, but at least anecdotally, Xfinity’s reputation is … not great. They’ve invested a LOT of money in improving it, which is great, but it hasn’t really budged that ACSI score I mentioned.Honestly, not much we can do about that. As a former customer service agent (not for Xfinity), I’d just say: be patient, be firm, and try to avoid having to call in the first place.
    - (2) Internet Speed. Whenever we talk about Xfinity, this is actually the complaint that I hear the most: that you’re not getting the speeds you signed up for.
Luckily, this is something you may be able to do something about. Here are some ways to optimize your internet speed. It seems obvious to avoid high-traffic hours, especially during evenings, you may see slow-down if you’re using cable, no way around that. But if you’re consistently too slow, there may be other reasons for it...
    - Double-check your modem compatibility. Remember the speed that Xfinity is delivering is to your Modem. That modem has to be rated to handle whatever speed you’re paying for.
    - Next up is your router, if you’re using a separate one. I upgraded my Xfinity-provided rental router to a newer version of the Xfinity-provided rental router, and I saw an immediate jump in speed. (Would have been nice if Xfinity had let me know I was using an old one, but I figured it out anyway.) So like your modem, check your router.
Xfinity Router Test Video: • Xfinity Router Speed T...
    - Most of us are using wifi. That’s another thing that can slow speeds down. Wifi is good enough now that if you’re RIGHT NEXT to the router, you won’t see much difference between that and being plugged in. But if you’re a few rooms over, or on a different floor, then that signal will degrade, and you’ll slow way down. A wifi extender will help with this, or a wifi mesh system; especially if you can wire that mesh system together.
And wouldn’t you know it, I did ANOTHER video on this subject!
    • Google Wifi Review 201...
While sometimes Xfinity might be to blame for delivering slower speeds… they’re not, and there might be something we can do to up our speeds. And now I look forward to everyone calling me an Xfinity shill in the comments. Bring it on.
CONCLUSION: Xfinity is … well, pretty good at what they do, and they’re the biggest and baddest for a reason. If you’re thinking about choosing Xfinity, I think it’s not a bad choice. It’s not an accident that they rank highly

I was fed up with comcast continually raising prices, eliminating channels so I would have to buy an additional tier to get the old channels and other unnecessary fees and charges with slow internet.I was also tired of interrupted service and having to deal with a repetitive , barely English speaking agent in India that could only help me half the time. I went with Verizon after almost 30 years with comcast and glad I did.

Xfinity is the biggest and baddest because they have a monopoly or a duopoly in the areas they service, not because of their speeds, pricing, customer service or reliability. In my area in Grand Rapids, MI, Comcast's reliability is abysmal. They regularly go completely down weekly. And that is only the reported outages that are officially displayed on their outage map. Local issues with old wiring and faulty equipment mean you are likely seeing more issues than is official.

I got my first High Speed internet connection in 1995 (PacBell DSL at 6mps). Blazing fast at the time, a snail by todays standards. The great thing about it was that it ALWAYS worked. I've had xfinity/comcast since I moved back to Colorado 9 years ago. I have spent literally HUNDREDS of hours in that time, rebooting my modem(s). My morning routine every day is to get up, brew some coffee, turn on the news and get on the PC to see what's new in the world and then get pissed off because the internet drops multiple multiple times between 6am and 9am EVERY SINGLE MORNING. I can't stand the thought of calling for service and going through the same routine I've done with the xfinity service rep dozens and dozens. There is more BS involved with service than actual service. Can't tell you how many times I've heard "Sir, we are going to take steps right now to insure this NEVER happens again. It's a lie! Then they try to convince you that the problem could quite likely be with the modem/router I use and the try to upgrade me to the xfinity gateway. I've had this problem with three different modems... The first was a comcast supplied(rented) modem, the second was an X-finity branded modem I purchased, and the third is another x-finity modem/router I bough several months back to upgrade to the 5g wifi. More BS in my opinion. Then I am told I have no choice but to wait for a technician to check my inside wiring. So I have disassembled a 300 pound corner desk three times in nine years so the tech tell me there is no problem and it's a tight connection. THANKS! I already knew that! Then the tech goes outside and works on the xfinity side of the problem, fixes it and it works fantastic for the next several months and then the ride starts all over again. This may in fact be the FASTEST connection I have ever had but that is negated by it being the MOST UNDEPENDABLE INTERNET I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED. I have literaly invested HUNDREDS OF HOURS of my own time over the years for the privilage of paying for the service that is causing all of this work. I know posting here will do me little good but at least I didn't have to listen to sales pitches and total BS to do it.

My issue with xfinity is that the price of my service went up 30% in a little over a year, and that is not even accounting for the bundle rate that dropped off. If I include that, then it went up 48%. Contracted customer service and all they could do was offer a plan that had fewer channels, a lot less storage space, for just slightly less than the increase that I am paying now.

The one thing Xfinity needs to do is bump up their data cap especially for gigabit customers. 1 TB simply isn't enough today when multiple people can be streaming HD content several hours per day. My family consistently hovers at 900 GB per month and busy months where there's a AAA game to download easily puts us in the danger zone and we've started having overages.

Making me pay the $90 fee cause it’s been three years since someone in my room used Xfinity. Like wtf I didn’t choose this room. The army gave me a code and said this is your room. I think it’s pretty messed up to make me pay for it when I could get moved to a different room at any given time and who knows have to pay the fee again in that room. Probably be 2 min tops and be like it’s all good and $90 down the drain. And it ain’t like I can just switch to a room that supposedly all ready to go for self install. Shouldn’t even be a fee like that on a military installation.

First off, the upload speed is one of the main reasons to switch to fiber optic, but that will only be useful to a small subset of internet users. Secondly, I would be glad to have the price that your reviewer mentioned. Comcast will offer a competitive price for a year and then jack it up and only offer discounts for bundles of things that you do not need. Third, you should have discussed how much bandwidth is needed for common internet usage and what that might look like in a hypothetical family of 4 or 6. I don't need as much as they'd like to sell me. I don't imagine that I'll be interested in streaming 4k, particularly considering... (Fourth) Comcast sneakily instituted data caps last year. You would not be charged for the first or second overage, but you would be surprised since the caps never existed before and there is not a convenient way to monitor it.
All that being said, Comcast delivers speeds equal to or greater than promised in my neighborhood, but that's partly because my neighbors don't use a lot of bandwidth, as cable uses shared bandwidth on a neighborhood level. Comcast's outages are more common than I would like, but they are usually on top of it and it is easy to report (text 'Out' to #####).

  • @val7287
    @val7287 3 года назад +2

What makes xfinity a horrible ISP its not necessarily the price or the speed yet the customer service and most importantly the feature you have completely missed and that is internet stability. It is pointless to have a 100mbps speed if internet disconnects due to signal instability and power fluctuations. Remember those downstream upstream dBmv power requirements by which modems function? If those signal levels are out of range internet disconnects. Xfinity does not know how to fix that since 2 techs came at my address and internet still disconnects sometimes a couple of times per day. Apparently Jason Montoya missed those facts!

  • @Drenyx
    @Drenyx 4 года назад +7

Yep, you skipped right over offering a low initial price that doesn't include taxes/fees & equipment rental... That $50/mo. internet only plan will easily bill at $65 and you will see a $10-20/mo. jump in a year or two.
They don't include reminders you just get a bigger bill one month.
If you try to renegotiate they want you to add on services with the promise of these good deals where the price goes up later.
Unfortunately I do not have competitive alternatives to Xfinity offered in my area (Monopoly), so my best option was to purchase my own equipment and insist on internet only service.
This reeks of a paid PR video.

I have been a Comcast/Xfinity customer for decades here in northern VA. I have had some issues every now and again, but every time there was an issue, they fixed it right up. Their Customer Support has always been decent for me, but lately, it has become really great!!! I am not lying!!!! When I call, I am not on hold for a long time, I get an American who speaks clear English and is willing and able to help me. They were patient and answered all my questions even when I had to ask them the same question a few times to understand some of the complex answers, but they still cleared it up for me!
Pricing does seem to be a little high. I was paying $216 a month for a triple play package (Tv/internet/phone), but just last week I went down to an internet only package for $108 to $136 per month (I need to clear up some fees it's saying on the website that I will be charged. I am not sure if its a mistake or what.). In both packages, I had and still have 250 Mbps (and in speed tests, I can get past 280 Mbps!). So I'd like to know just where I could get 1 Gbps for $70!! Another recent improvement is that they have done away with contracts! All of their deals are now month to month, cancel or change anytime with no penalties! My Mother-in-law has Comcast internet/tv/phone service. When it works, it's fast and great. The issue is when there is an outage. They refuse to send a tech to her house unless she agrees to pay for service up front and then they will decide to refund the charge if it is determined that the issue is in her rented router or farther out towards the pole. 99% of the time, it's in the edge networking equipment on the pole outside and could be solved if they had monitoring/notifications that could tell a phone tech that it needs reset/maintenance.

Wifi is perfect now but xfinity still drops 3-5 times per day. Seems quite excessive. And, as for speeds, the only time of day we see 112% is the middle of the night. The rest of the time, it is anywhere from 30-80% of advertised speeds.

I have xfinity and pay for the 250 mbps and run an eero pro mesh system 3 pack and I get 300 mbps download and 25 mbps upload. This covers my half acre lot with a concrete home with storm windows seamlessly in South Florida. I find going to the Xfinity store better for customer service which is only a couple of miles away from me. If your interested in the eero system wait for the Prime day deals on Amazon or Best Buy as they usually cut the price by 200 bucks from the standard price of 499. Had AT&T U-verse previously and it’s honestly horrible and never delivers speeds I paid for in several different areas and homes.

A lot of my friends on discord pay for "gigabit" through Xfinity and cox (the same thing) and every single one of them get around 50-300 mbs and this is consistent across the United States, they even did it to me twice when I had their service in multiple states as I moved. I've noticed that when you get the service new it gives you close to the speeds you payed for but within a month you're already being throttled. I recently switched to a company that has been laying infrastructure for cellular service providers since the 90s and they just got into laying down fiber optic (which not everyone offers) and I now have the privilege of only paying 90 dollars a month for real consistent gigabit connection with 2gbs being the 150 dollar option and this will remain so since it's so cheap to run compared to copper. Don't give Comcast your money.

    • @JJFlores197
      @JJFlores197 Год назад

I'd like to do that, but in my area its either Xfinity or AT&T. I moved from AT&T because it was way too slow at 18 Mbps about 4 years ago. I get a consistent 550 Mbps with Xfinity. I hear that a company in my town will be installing fiber internet, but it's been over a year and I haven't really heard anything else so for now Comcast is my only good choice for fast internet. I even tried T-Mobile's Home internet 5G thing and it was abysmal. It was even worse most of the time than my 18 Mbps connection from AT&T!

As a former Xfinity customer, my chief complaints with them were less about their internet service and more about their television service/practices. My complaints about the internet service were:
    1) Upload speed of only 10 Mb
    2) Data caps
    3) their funding to end net neutrality
It was interesting when a local fiber company started offering internet service in my area around 2 years ago how about 75% of my neighborhood dumped Xfinity. They are offering gigabit speed (upload and download) for the same price as Xfinity's Blast service (180 down and 10 up at the time). And no data caps.

My reason: They made two attempts to make their system work at my home in Houston. Both times I went with internet, telephone and cable tv. The two attempts were separated by about five years. The problem was that in hot summer weather everything went out from about 3 PM to about 7 PM every day. Numerous attempts to figure out what was wrong failed. I went to AT&T each time after their attempt failed. They had better speeds, but nothing during peak hours.

I've paid for Xfinity internet for the past five years, I pay for 100mbps and it's never above 30mbps unless I call and complain, then it's around 100mbps for a day or 2, and back to 30. I've called about this no less than a dozen times over the past 2 years... and the last two times they scheduled a technician to come out where I had to be home for a 2-3 hour window, and both times the technician didn't show up, didn't call, didn't care. Comcast is the most awful atrocity of customer service on the planet. Last time I spoke with them, their suggestion was that I pay more for faster speeds and lock into a 3 year contract with them. Why would I pay for faster speeds when you only give me 33% of the speed I'm currently paying for?

I'm on Xfinity 250 service and I also have cable with them. As a internet provider I will state that it always performs at or above the 250. Cable on the other hand is a mess. 1000 stations that nobody watches, everyone knows this already. I'm cutting my cable when Disney plus bundle comes out and getting over air channels. My main beef with Comcast is the monopoly, because that is exactly what it is. No competition in the same category of service. Lastly, I will most likely need to upgrade my service to an unlimited data plan, further adding to my frustration about Comcast monopoly and lack of competition.

For 90% of internet users anything over 15-25 mbps is absolute overkill imo. I know, I got the Lite plan at only 4 mbps from now defunct BrightHouse, now Spectrum. And I often stream HD content or 1080 on my TV and computer, whether Netflix or RUclips, etc. Drawback is that HD videos take on average 5 to 15 seconds to fully buffer to highest resolution, then smooth sailing til end of video or movie. But I'm so sick and tired of Spectrum's never ending price increases for all their crappy tv content that I'm gonna cut the tv cord end of this month's cycle and go internet only. Problem is that I'll lose my grandfathered 4 mbps bargain bundle plan and be forced to use their lowest current plan of 100 mbps with no bundle, so big price increase for internet only plan, but will still save at minimum couple or three hundred bucks a year. I'm going with a new ROKU tv, will continue to use Netflix off and on, and Sling from late August to late Jan, five months of ESPN football. I'm lucky to live 32 miles from a CBS transmitter tower and will pay no more than $50 max for a amplified indoor ota antenna to watch SEC football. My total monthly bill for internet and Netflix combined should be right at $78 for about 6 months out of year, no more than $103 for the couple months when I migh be subscribing to Netflix and Sling at same time, and a couple or three months with ROKU only at $65 for internet. Spectrum recently had substantial price increases for internet only.

KEVIN TAYLOR I don’t work for xfinity/Comcast. The reasoning for your 75mbps vs 1gbps think of the “trunk line” as a highway if the highway is only “75 lanes” doesn’t matter how new the highway is it still only has “75 lanes”
You have to wait or show support to have a better “trunk line” placed for your subdivision such as having them run fiber to the node you are currently attached too.
Fiber to the node was recently ran to my subdivision and I now have 400mbps down but only 20mbps up. The slower upload is limited by the technology xfinity/Comcast use to send data back and forward on a coax cable.

The only thing wrong with cable is you are paying for commercials. Netflix you pay for their service to be commercial free. Cable makes profit off advertisers and consumers buying cable, they get 2x profit off showing commercials, you're forced to watch them and you payed for it!!! Let alone 15 minutes are commercials and 15 minutes are the show in a program, so the amount you watch on cable, your watching the same amount of commercials and they get paid twice!!! Logic

I love my ATT DSL service 6mb per sec $40 per month. But I'm not a gamer and my TVs are all set to 720 line quality. She's lying about the prices. You can't get Infinity year after year for $30. Just can't.

@@VitandusEBK I've had Comcast for nearly 2years and the service has been reliable in my home. I despise Comcast as much as you do, but that's my only feasible choice for fast internet. AT the time I switched from AT&T, the fastest they could offer was up to 18Mbps. I have the 175Mbps package (over provisioned to 220Mbps) and it is light years ahead of AT&T in my area. AT&T only has FTTH home in a few neighborhoods and neither company seems to care about expanding the FTTH.

Jose Javier Flores For us, we’re paying $80 for 6 mbps upload and 110 mbps download which is dogshit. Not to mention I often get packet loss and random internet connection drops. Fiber here for atnt is $100 a month for 1000mbps download and upload. My friend has it and never has a problem with it, and it’s consistent.

I actually enjoy my internet service from xfinity and the mobile phone service is awesome too! Cable television is where they are just ripping people off right and left. Once I cut the cord and downgraded to internet only I've been very impressed. I pay for 150mbps internet and my speed tests all over my 3,000 sq ft home consistently come in at 170-180 mbps. I use my own modem and router which will pay for itself by getting rid of rental fees in just under 2 years. I pay $50 flat for 12 months and then I think the plan goes up to $70 but hopefully they will honor the $50 again.
