But you think that slapping an "organic" label on the bag and possibly using a different insecticide method is magically gonna increase the nutritional value of the produce? Alrighty then.
I blame the factory farmer mentality. In the USA back in the 1920’s 80% of Americans were small organic farmers. Sadly today I think it’s like 2%. The big greedy corporations took over the majority of food production in the USA.
It's a buzzword like "plant based". On that note, I'm going to drink some vodka and smoke some cigarettes. I'm pretty sure they are good for me because they are "plant based"
Having spent my earliest years on a farm, I know what food should taste like and I haven't eaten over-processed foods in literally decades. I also grew up learning how to cook, and still do. That said, Pringles are my secret vice; how can I eat a tuna sandwich without chips?
Kelloggs and their glycemic index is where you see the harms they contain.. High sugar equivalent is the trigger for the insulin release in the body, it goes straight to the liver for making to glucose. Bacon and eggs do not trigger the insulin response and therefore satiates for many hours and supplies an energy release over that period when you are using it up.
For all those smarty pants out there calling out the fact that Pete said ‘bag of pringles’, there actually are bags of mini Pringle’s which are popular with kids since you easily control portion sizes.
Having kids has been the biggest struggle to my dieting regimen. I don't want to keep my kids devoid of pleasurable things, but it's a daily mental exercise to avoid eating their snacks especially because I work from home.
I've struggled with this too. I want them to be healthy, but I'm afraid of creating an eating disorder in my teen children. I feel like it's an impossible line to walk. I only hope that they see what I'm doing and that it becomes a mindset for them. Right now I'm not sure it's working.
Problem: You have to itemize just what processes you're talking about, EACH AND EVERY ONE. Cooking? That's a process. Adding spices? That's a process, with each and every additive a single 'process'. Rinsing? That's a process. Refrigerating? That's a process. Anything you do to a food, is processing it. ANYTHING.
@@martinjose9331 It's a good point. People just say "processed foods are bad" and refuse to elaborate. Not all "processing" is bad and there is nothing inherent about processing things that's bad.
Canada and Europe enforce strict content rules for processed foods. I am Canadian, and I live in Germany. Americans eat the same processed foods, but the American companies are allowed to put these chemicals in.
It’s frustrating because we know what foods are healthy. Vegetables, fruit, fresh meat, healthy fats, nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains. It is really hard to be unhealthy if you eat 90% of your food in those categories.
Exercise daily (for an hour at whatever activity at whatever pace), eat mostly whole foods with proteins, veggies, and fruit, eat treats sometimes. Get enough sleep. Drink in moderation. Adhere to that advice and live a long life.
Food depends on how it's processed, and what it contains. We know added fructose, vegetable oils, preservatives and man made chemicals added to foods are what causes most of the problems.

The fruitloops as "starting your day off with candy" thing is something that seems extremely common place in America. Donuts, waffles, pancakes, etc. are all desserts that people eat in the morning instead of normal breakfast foods. I am at least a little sympathetic towards cereal because there are healthier cereal options and the addition of milk will at least boost the meal's relative health profile compared to these aforementioned options.
@@Kevin-kj5th No, it's not, it's just how some people speak. A lot of people find it annoying, but it has nothing to do with being insincere, it's developed incidentally by copying speech patterns of those around you.

Here is a tip for poor folks like myself though, if you're going to eat bread, don't buy the stuff on the shelves in Walmart, but the 'French loafs' the fresh bread they make daily because they don't put the same level of 'shelf stabilizing chemicals' as the average loaf prepared to sit in plastic on an American shelf for weeks. I'll buy those, stick them in the freezer and if I'm having bread coat cut it open and put olive oil, salt, and pepper on it in the air fryer until toasty... and those loafs are the cheapest too!

I eat processed foods a lot such as chips and many canned goods like beans or soups but don’t eat in excess so my blood work is good along with a good bmi. Not much of a sweet tooth so that’s fairly minimal
Certain types of processing aren't THAT bad. Like freezing is totally okay. But the whole bleaching, heating and hydro-nizing shenanigan is no no. If the fundamental structure is altered, it's no bueno.
I want to look into the research but to my understanding as long as you’re not overweight then the risk of eating these food is substantially reduced. I constantly ask my wife to stop buying junk food, sugar cereals, etc. When she does bring these things home, and I eat the entire box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch in a few days' time, she's surprised somehow. Of course I *want* to eat that sweet junk food, it's delicious! That's why I ask her to refrain from purchasing it in the first place. If there are no chips, I'll eat a banana. If there aren't frozen burritos, I'll make a sandwich. I'm inherently lazy and I will go for the convenient crap in the house (aren't we all, to various degrees?) but I'm not unwilling to cook and prep my own food, especially if there are no easier options.
Nuance. The difference between between being informed and being lectured. Twinkies and tomatoes pressure canned at home are both processed. As Dr Attia points out they are not of equal food value. Or profit margin for some faceless corporation.
The whole CGI backdrop thing is incredible but feels a bit disconnected to whats being discussed. It feels unnecessary and bit too much. Also, most people aren't even watching, they're just listening. If you want to improve the production value and visual interest, it needs to be relevant to the discussion. The scale of the background made the conversation seem small and unimportant.
I was going to ask ... so what do you feed your children for breakfast ... and Chris asks the same question ... however Dr Attia says venison ... that is never gonna happen in the real world ... come on!
Is Kellogs really the bad guy here? Or do they just follow sales/demand trends? They have “Kelloggs Corn Flakes Original” which has minimal sugar added, 2.7g per serving of 28g. It’s literally mashed dehydrated corn, most ppl skip that and buy the ones that taste just like candy, of cos the company wants to drive profit so 98% of their products align the taste boards of the average American. If we don’t reorient ourselves and adjust the culture, we should not expect the companies would not do that for us.
Attia misses the point here saying "Who's eating Kellogs cereal for breakfast?" after just making his point about America eating highly processed foods as a practice. You know that it's common, especially at the lowest income rung, so why not attempt to make these items a little less toxic? Feeding your kids venison feels like the ivory tower of nutrition here.
Rolled Oats (not the instant kind) are damned cheap, and nutritious. As for the venison - what's "ivory tower" about hunting? It's how a lot of rural America fills the freezer.
Peter Attia… talks in riddles. How was your journey today “Well, journey is a misunderstood word… the literature says ‘journey’, is travel that takes in at least 1000 miles, covers 3 different modes of transport and takes in at least 2 different types of landscape, so I find the word to be misleading’. Mate, I don’t even care I was just being polite about you getting to the studio. “I struggle with the word ‘polite’….”
I’m going to guess…if you are fit, exercise a decent amount, it actually could be good to eat that processed ‘crap’ as needed. If you are that diabetic inactive person that can’t even run a couple of miles, then it’s poison. Stop blaming the food people, just do things with moderation…Don’t need to run 100 miles a week, but you don’t just walk a mile a week to be healthy. Be fit, strong and eat reasonably.
Candy in the morning isn't necessarily so bad. First half marathon I did sub 1h30min started around noon, legs were like wings thanks to a huge slice of cinnamon apple cake for breakfast. That's just pure fuel for a runner. However, as a TRUE masculine man I make those cakes myself, rather than thinking "baking is a women's thing". Apples were picked from the garden, never saw weird chemicals. As for processed foods, think about supplements for workouts. Like protein powder. That stuff is just as nasty as any frozen pizza or Kelloggs product. Still the "healthy" guys keep chugging their shakes... (that said, I'm sure there are some options that are worse than others but if you are so in need of protein - at least eat it as proper food and not powder)
Dude, candy in the morning is inherently bad… I mean, you’re literally giving the most extreme example of running 13 miles😂 How many people do you truly think are doing this in the morning after their frootloops?
@@Berticus92 Sure, the example is not an everyday thing, but I'm not the only one that works out in the morning or burns alot of calories during the day - that's not very unusual. That said, I don't really do fruit loops or any of the other sugar coated cereals unless it's "for fun" once every few months. There are more cost effective, better tasting AND healthier options out there. Like a bowl of muesli and milk. Or, even oatmeal and milk if you want it cheaper. My go-to breakfast (or evening meal) if I want healthy energy is 1-2 ripe bananas cut to smaller pieces, and a handful or two worth of raisins in a bowl - fill it up with muesli or oatmeal, add some jam (I use my home made jars), and fill to the rim with milk. You can't beat that, really. And, it's veggie friendly! :) My point was just that there are times when sugar has it's place, and also (between the lines) that people with a sweet tooth (like me!) should consider running more if they want to get fit, as the food you want to eat becomes more useful then.
I don’t eat many processed food and I’ve lost 25 lbs in the past four months. But because of this, I almost creamed my pants looking at the goodies in the thumbnail lol
I had Canary Waffles on the podcast recently talking about non specific sciencey stuff ,it got me thinking so I came up with a thing I called the aardvark discriptor paradox which doesn't mean anything in relation to what we're talking about but might just bamboozle some gym rats for ten minutes
statins are a much less-nuanced term. When someone says processed or even ultra-processed foods, I don't know what they mean. I have no real idea what the line between processed and ultra-processed even is.

Have you tried growing up?
If there is fruit and cake in the house the cake wins 10 times out of 10.
The issue is "ultra processed" and refined foods, not healthy modestly "assembled" or "packaged" foods made of real stuff.
They love conflating processed and ultra processed foods.
Nuance. The difference between between being informed and being lectured. Twinkies and tomatoes pressure canned at home are both processed. As Dr Attia points out they are not of equal food value. Or profit margin for some faceless corporation.
A bag of pringles? I didn’t hear any of the rest of the podcast
I literally paused the video to mentally process what i just heard.
Was this filmed in front of a green screen? How did they get that background and it looks so perfect?
“Geographic distance is the best discipline for me when it comes to diet.”-Chris Williamson
Preach!😂
An omelet is "processed".
So the best, healthiest way would be to eat the scrambled eggs raw? 🤔
@@christophsproehnle2114 Don't forget the shell!
@@christheother9088 thanks for the reminder!
Is this not the Shield agent who said "Hail Hydra"??
The whole CGI backdrop thing is incredible but feels a bit disconnected to whats being discussed. It feels unnecessary and bit too much. Also, most people aren't even watching, they're just listening. If you want to improve the production value and visual interest, it needs to be relevant to the discussion.
The scale of the background made the conversation seem small and unimportant.
I was going to ask ... so what do you feed your children for breakfast ... and Chris asks the same question ... however Dr Attia says venison ... that is never gonna happen in the real world ... come on!
God, these backdrops are absurdly distracting. What an incredible waste of money and time.
I hate it. Please no more.
As for the venison - what's
"ivory tower" about hunting? It's how a lot of rural America fills the freezer.
@@windycityliz7711You're right. But with the Maui Nui stuff you need financing to purchase it!
What would be an example. 40 seconds in, your energy drink sitting exactly in frame.
Jumping the shark, babes.
Peter Attia… talks in riddles.
How was your journey today
“Well, journey is a misunderstood word… the literature says ‘journey’, is travel that takes in at least 1000 miles, covers 3 different modes of transport and takes in at least 2 different types of landscape, so I find the word to be misleading’.
Dude, candy in the morning is inherently bad…
I mean, you’re literally giving the most extreme example of running 13 miles😂
How many people do you truly think are doing this in the morning after their frootloops?
My point was just that there are times when sugar has it's place, and also (between the lines) that people with a sweet tooth (like me!) should consider running more if they want to get fit, as the food you want to eat becomes more useful then.
Haha bro said bag of pringles! I honestly believe he must not eat processed foods!
I like Peter but... anything in plastic is bad unless he recommends it,,,,
That background is crazy
Takes a stand on statins. Won't take a stand on ultra-processed foods.
statins are a much less-nuanced term. When someone says processed or even ultra-processed foods, I don't know what they mean. I have no real idea what the line between processed and ultra-processed even is.
A bag of pringles is crumbs
That background is F*cking awesome
Canada poptarts usta have different ingredients. There both the same now though.
‘Processed’ and ‘toxins’ have got to be the two most current grifter buzzwords in existence.
Both my dad’s parents got type 2 diabetes from eating fruit loops for breakfast every day for 30+ years
Why? $$$ - thats why
