Electronics engineer here. Of course you 'can' use your phone, or even a couple of people on the plane for a call without it being an serious issue. The problem lays in how your phone connect and comnunitmcate with cell towers on the ground. Your phone have to constantly switch tower since the plane is moving so fast between the towers, the plane is slso 10km up in the air. When your phone constantly jumps between towers like this, it boost your signal up many magnitudes normal to handshake and connect to a new tower. If 100 people is talking on the phone or even have devices thatvare not in airplane mode, theyre all constantly trying to communicate with new towers at high signal power, whilst the tower us sending you highbpower signsls back, which can be a huge problem for certain plane instuments and communication equipment that rely on radio waves. I think you can guess why passengers shouldnt be in a sense jamming the pilots systems during flight 😂
The problem is that a cell phone tower only projects a functional signal up to approximately 10,000 feet and the average commercial airliner cruises at 35,000 feet. Your phone can't connect to any towers above 10,000 feet but if the phone is on and not in airplane mode it will keep searching and trying to connect. The output of the phones signal does not increase when it is searching and trying to connect to a network but the phone uses more power and drains the battery quicker when it is doing so because it is an added function/process that the phone is performing.
Now more than ever, we need some comedic therapy for the soul. Everything going on in the world is becoming too much. And I’m glad I have the pod to let me escape the madness even for a little. The problem is that a cell phone tower only projects a functional signal up to approximately 10,000 feet and the average commercial airliner cruises at 35,000 feet. Your phone can't connect to any towers above 10,000 feet but if the phone is on and not in airplane mode it will keep searching and trying to connect. The output of the phones signal does not increase when it is searching and trying to connect to a network but the phone uses more power and drains the battery quicker when it is doing so because it is an added function/process that the phone is performing.

12:25 if Andrew is serious about the boarding question, it’s quite simple. To equal out the time spent in the plane. The back of the airplane is out last; meaning if they boarded first they would be on the plane longer than those closer to the front. We all just want off the plane as quickly as possible most times. Adding an extra 30 minutes to an hour to load the plane while waiting is sometime too much for people to handle
that makes sense, if you sit front you board first and leave first. if you sit in the back you board last and leave last
