    ❤robin hopper published a book on glazes. Check that also out of the library. Also ceramics monthly has some over the years. Slips are a good way to layer glazes for good effect. Usually they are simple recipes. You might as well get slip recipes from the masters. Make great pottery, Mathew Kelly will teach you the best about forming. Robin Hopper has a slip recipe as well that will also go over bisque. He was voted on of the top ten living potters, by Americans, although he was a Canadian.sadly he passed from Cancer.

    Great video, it works to use underglaze instead of slip also.

    I always have the curved look on my bowls and cups when I paint. Yhey were supposed to be straight. Now I can tell my students I meant for it to come out that way! Ha! ! Thanks. I really like your work.

    Well you did it again❗❤... I live 15 minutes from the factory here in El Cajon. I purchased the 6 piece carving set. I haven't had a chance to use them I've been watching videos. Thanks, your video was perfect timing..❗

    Never feel you need to apologise for imperfections as these emphasise the fact that the piece is handmade. I have been using DC tools for over a year now and they are fantastic for sgraffito and mishima carving. The jug designs are stunning in their simplicity, looking forward to seeing the finished result, if I can wait that long. Thanks Matt

    I’d love some DC tools but I can’t justify the price because I’m not great at any type of artwork on pottery. I’ll keep practicing with my cheap tools! Thanks for another wonderful video..

      @clifforddalton3067 4 года назад +1

      As a hobby potter I too cannot justify the prices of these tools. I make some of my trimming tools from "hacksaw blades", quite cheap and they do the job :)

  • @sandracartica4932
    @sandracartica4932 Год назад +1

    It's so much easier to carve when the piece is on a piece of foam and on your lap, but if the bottom is still too soft your better off on the wheel.

    I've used slip but have never tried cutting through! Next time I'm in the studio I will definitely try this method.
    Thanks for sharing this `inspiring video` with us.

    Are you saying that these tools are monumentally better than the regular loop tools. WHY ARE THEY BETTER? ARE THEY SHARPER. DO THEY MAKE CURVES BETTER. DO THEY CAPTURE SMALL MOVMENTS. HAVE YOU DONE A VIDEO ON SLIPS? This is a real interest for me. Maybe do a side by side comparison with regular slip tools. I’m laughing at your confidence and mastery that you would experiment on such a lovely form. I wouldn’t take a chance on such a lovely vase because they are hard for me to make. But in the future I have plans so I’ll let you know how it goes.

  • @crissymurray6176
    @crissymurray6176 4 года назад

    HI Matthew, i have been watchin for alittle while now but less then a year but lovin yr work and yr so good coz of yr OCD.. and yr eye for perfection and yr ability to experimental side, to get the best out of clag,slip, tools, clag, firing, glazes etc
    I am studin yr videos while i am tryin to save to get my own wheel and kilm and i qm tryin to find where i can get good clag coz i want to make my own dinner plates bowls and mugs and kitchen wares..etc so with the slips u r using for colour bases and decorations, is that only clag or have u mixed other things in it..

  • @kellydiver
    @kellydiver 4 года назад +1

    Beautiful! I’ve been wanting to try this and actually have a few of the Diamond Core tools, but I don’t know how to make the slip in the traditional colors like you use. Is there a resource with recipes for slip?

    • @Cate7451
      @Cate7451 2 года назад

      John Brett has a site. Different Color’s are made by different clay bodies. You could also add your own colourants like rio or umbrella. Tin for white. I have a book for slips and am hunting out a recipe, also there’s Robin hopper. Answer me back so I can send out a recipe when I find one.

    What are your thoughts re using stained slip vs underglaze in carving?

    • @MatthewKellyPottery
      @MatthewKellyPottery  4 года назад +1

      Most underglaze won’t survive at higher temperatures but I think anyone should use what works best for their clay and glaze, etc

      I’m sure I did somewhere, they didn’t turn out as I’d hoped. You can see the carving but the color change from raw clay to slip is negligible.
