- Chapter 2 of Richard Schmid's "Alla Prima II" is about painting what you see. This in depth book review goes into detail explaining what each chapter is about and includes sharing a few of the photos of Schmid's paintings and a few quotes from the book. The idea is to give the viewer a better idea about whether they want to purchase the painting book.
Chapter 2 is mostly about painting what you see and brush stroke strategy with a little art history built in. This video includes images from master painters such as Zorn, Sargent, Henri, Serov, and Twachtmann for brush stroke examples. It also touches on Chiaroscuro painting as a historical style developed by Michelangelo.

that ballerina painting of yours was a great example in painting what you see not what you know - thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Your feedback is motivating me to want to finish the series of chapters in this book. I've gotten distracted from the project lately and convinced myself that people probably aren't getting as much out of it as I think they might and no one will notice if I don't finish the rest of the chapters. 😅
He makes a lot of good points but I feel most of the book is just him rambling. Also the quality of the images of his paintings are very poor. It looks like they were shot with poor quality film and not digital. It’s hard to see the details in brushstrokes because it’s blurry.
Are all these photos of paintings by different artists in the Alla Prima book
Excellent review of Chapter 2. So charismatic, genuine and funny at the end. 😊
Surprisingly, I liked the paintings from the artists who don't use fancy brushstrokes (Serov, Henri, and Twachtmann) better than those who take care over their brushstrokes (Zorn and Sargent). Am I alone in this?
Wow! That's such an interesting way of seeing those paintings. I have to reexamine them with this in mind. Thanks for your perspective!
What is a fancy brushstroke?
Do you recommend the hardback or softcover version of this book?
Re: hardcover vs. softcover,...I have the hardcover volume 1. It stays open more easily, which is great for inspiration while you're painting. Writing this just several days after Richard's passing.
@@danielgrove1300 Oh wow, I didn't know he died! That's horrible. :(
Excellent review which helps other artists to decide on a buy out or not. By any chance have you done the review of the still life book of Richard Schmidt as well?
Rest In Peace Richard Schmid
Time well spent. Thank you
Excellent review. I am still undecided whether to spend the +140 EUR for the book which is the Amazon's price over here in Europe. BTW, my wife is also having Botox as a treatment for migraine and she's doing better. I wish you luck with that!
Thank you and I hope your wife does well with the treatments
I can't wait for chapter 3. So nice to listen to your talk. Thank you!
Do you think this book worth to spend 150? I can not make my mind on it.
I think alot of his painting is based on very sound drawing, the kind of quick dynamic drawing that only comes with constant practice.
But mainly thank you for the review!
Hard ‘c’.. wonderful summation.
It's not always what is written but the commentary on what was written.
Beautiful book and beautiful you 😊
Can I buy your book
It pronounced as ( Kiyaro a’ skuro). Good review, brava!
one thing that and excellent
RIP Richard Schmidt
Elizabeth Shue?
👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏🌷🌷🌷
You have international beauty.
Thank you :)
Cool
I'm starting to see Schmid more as an illustrator than a painter.. His process is that of an illustrator. This is a drawing technique. Where as a painter is first concerned with values
Henri is pronounced En-rye . Not Henry
I would like marry you ! Nyc
