Ive looked at both. But went 2038r. Control lay out and preferred the way deere does the hydrostatic feed pedal. Didn't like the feel of heel toe rocker.

A couple of key points: 1. The weight difference will almost always be the deciding factor for pulling power. Virtually any tractor has enough power and gearing to break the tires loose, so regardless of the fact that the Kubota has a 3 speed tranny (which may or may NOT be a lower range than the Lo on the JD), the Deere should pull more because of its weight, given similar tire traction. 2. In my opinion, there is no direct comparison between these brands. They tend to leap-frog each other to some extent, partly I think to avoid a direct comparison. I did a year of research before buying my new tractor in 2019 - and I was on the market for a mid-size compact. I read every spec of every major model for which there was a decent local dealer (which unfortunately removed Kioti, Mahindra, and a few others from the comparison). The three that came to the top were Kubota, Deere, and Massey, and the result came down to a few key points: > since the Massey is just a re-branded offshore unit, I found their options and accessories limited and/or “clunky”. > in every “close” comparison between the Kubota and Deere, I could in every case step slightly up to the next step in the Kubota model at the same or less price than the Deere (based on local pricing here in Canada) > the Kubota’s had an answer for EVERY option and accessory I could imagine. If you wanted a truly integrated third function setup, you simply ordered it. It drove me nuts that Deere didn’t have an OEM solution for this in the 20R series (you had to do it with aftermarket parts). The end result was that it became clear why Kubota was the leader (and the originator) in compact tractors. Everything was available and the prices were notably better than Deere. I had every intention of buying green when I started my new tractor quest (and for the record, I have owned a 1961 MF50 for many years!). After a year of research, test drives, consultations, and exhaustive forum reading, it was a clear choice - I bought the beautifully equipped Kubota Grand L4060 Cab for less money, more features, and equal or better capacities than the cabbed 30R Series Deere. I’ve had it almost two years and couldn’t be happier. Both are great products but colour and brand are not the reasons to choose an investment of this level. It takes a little bit to get used to driving one after driving a normal tractor style, but once you've got it, you've got it. If you're cutting lines, you have to be careful spinning the mower around or the back tire will dig a bare spot. Just take it nice and slow during the turn and then it's back to full throttle across the yard!
Good start. 2 years ago I went through comparing Deere and Kubota. Came down to 3R vs L3560. 2R doesn't compare to the L3560. I went with L3560 GST and am very happy with it for my needs
I think the weight difference is a huge difference/game changer I’m a orange fan but two big differences are weight and engine Hp seems in these comparisons Kubota always the underdog! Even with the Bx it was underdog and still kicked but for its size! Ok can’t wait for the games to begin! Keep up the great work!
these smaller Kubotas are made light for landscapers so they don't tear up the lawn too much as it was explained to me, the L3300 is the first real workhorse, ( bigger than an LX3310. ). if you want weight you can add ballast to tyres and suitcase weights to suit.

@@beunbad I loved the BX but, for my needs it’s FEL was underpowered and, to be absolutely honest, I just wanted a bigger tractor. There were times, not real often, that the other capabilities of the BX came up a little short. I’ve had the new JD2032R for a week now and love it but, the controls for the FEL and backhoe were smoother and I’ve noticed the near impossibility of curl and lift FEL function integrated at once on the 2032R. The capabilities of the 2032R for FEL and backhoe are very much higher.
@@beunbad Sorry for being unclear. The new JD2032R has the situation but, it’s common to all JD; trying to lift and curl the FEL at the same time is almost impossible and trying to uncurl and lift during a dump simultaneously is undoable for me so far. The BX was very polished at both of these simultaneous moves.
@Air. You’ll get used to the different controls. At this point, I find the Deere controls easier than the bx controls. I’m sure it would be the other way around if I had 1000 hours on a bx.

Originally I wanted 3039R but it was not available so the salesman gave me a comparison sheet on the 2038R. It was perfect for what I needed especially since I have a lot of trees on my property and the 2038R was more maneuverable. Keep up the great work.
9:00 No cab and air conditioning is a real deal breaker here in Georgia, at least for a tractor too large to be a lawnmower. If it's August and I'm mowing a field, smoothing a driveway, loading a dump trailer, etc, I will either pay for AC or work after sundown.

Yea, I get it. We will do so. Probably offend half the viewers in the process. Meanwhile, one of the big complaints from our last comparison was that we chose the wrong tractors to compare....so we felt it worthwhile to lay out some specs to show why we feel the comparison is fair.
Right off the bat it's easy to see that the Kubota has a more sensible sized ROPS. I'm still amazed at JD's obsession with those sky-high ROPS especially when compared with similar sized machines from other manufacturers. It just means that more folks can't actually USE the ROPS as intended.
How is the use "intended"? Do you expect to roll the tractor over regularly? That's the intended use. Driver protection in case of a rollover. How would a taller ROPS prevent its intended use? I've never found ROPs height to be an issue except with door clearance if you're parking the tractor indoors, and in some uses with lower limbs on trees. So, you'll have to explain how "folks can't actually use the ROPS as intended."
@@buckhorncortez By "intended" use I meant deployed fully while the tractor is in use. :-) Not to be confused with all the other things that folks use ROPS for like tool storage, accessory shelving, fire extinguishers, lighting, etc. My garage door is too low to accommodate the ROPS and I have a lot of low hanging limbs and shrubs that would make the tractor dangerous to operate with the ROPS deployed. So I have to decide on the least likely of two scenarios, injury from the ROPS deployed or injury from it being folded. If you look at older JD tractors the fixed ROPS were much lower than they are now. Some almost half the height. Take the new 2-series for example, the ROPS is shorter than the Gen-1 2-series. Having a tractor with such a tall ROPS I tend to compare it to similar sized tractors from other manufacturers and the JD is the tallest by far. My brother just purchased a Kioti tractor and his ROPS is also much shorter than mine. Thus, my comment about "nice sensible sized ROPS". :-)

Price can vary between brands and dealers. My father bought a Deere 1023e a few years ago and it was $1500 difference between one Deere dealer to another . Unfortunately the closer dealer was the more expensive one but anyone making a purchase like a tractor or vehicle should do all the homework they can.
Thank you for all the work and passion you put into all of your videos ! Refering the question about cab on Jd in europe, well at least over here in germany the 2036r (there is no 2038r) is available only WITH cab (Mouser cab). Actually it maks things a bit harder but at least - beside summer - more comfortable. It does have the air ride seat as standard, not plastic. For example, the valve adjustment for the 3point travel speed adjustment is simply not reachable. To get to the fuses right underneath the steering wheel you have to open ~12 screws an pull out the middle front part from the cab - the part right in front of the steering wheel - to be able to remove the cover to get to the fuse block. Engine is reachable normally. ir does not have "air cooling" but it does have a heater which uses the engine water. You can as well add a stereo an 2 speakers. Beside that I think the cab has as well the advantage of the better storage room inside the cab ( you can put things on the fenders and they cannot "fall out" ). That way I'm able to carry my helmet (chain saw) as well as some tools (ratchet wrench with sockets in it's selling storage box) right behind the seat - again it can't fall out because of the cab.
After the stack overflow with your prior set of arguments I am surprised to see another compilation. I guess you got a new set of user stories from revised requirements and developed a new project plan. I would offer you pointers but I'm sure you can handle the list of operations without my input.
When comparing models including the L3901 is where we would usually go. As you said, the l3560 is a totally different class of tractor. Your Kubota weights, sometimes are without the tires. Often they use a shipping weight, not operating weight. Looks like some beautiful weather. 😊
@@TractorTimewithTim The biggest difference is L3901 is a mechanically older design. The only feature they really lack is a mid PTO and associated mid and front implements. It has all the same standard features, but doesn't have as many accessory kits. We sell equally as many Std L as LXs, mostly to people doing more utilitarian tasks. The pricing of a standard l, and an LX, is almost exactly the same. You get more capacity for your buck in the standard l. On the topic of weight, standard L is significantly heavier. Applications benefiting from weight, are often the differentiator on what we steer people towards. Standard when we want to weight, LX when we don't. As far as footprint, and physical size, they're very very close to each other. We would usually compare a standard L to a 3 series Deere, but since they're putting such a large engine in the 2 series now, they do kind of butt heads.

This should be a fun series. By the way, I notice neither bucket has Ken's Bolt On Hooks installed. To me, those are a necessity, regardless of the paint color.

Tim great video. I will say you mentioned the two comparable Kubota tractors to 2038R were LX3310 and Grand L but I think it would rather be L3901 (or even a L3301) and LX3310. The L3901 is about 150lbs heavier than the 2038R with 30.4HP at PTO. The LX series is meant for use on lawns and the L series, with its added weight, has some additional workhorse ability for things like hobby farmers that won’t be on their lawn all the time with it. I’ve owned both Green and Orange in the past 5 years and there is things I’ve liked about both, honestly I don’t think a guy could go wrong with either of these!
@@TractorTimewithTim you are correct, L3901/L3301 are competitors on specs but not comfort features/price necessarily. Its almost like these companies don’t make direct competitors with each other, whether it be for marketing reasons or just because they believe in different solutions for their customer needs. Either way I enjoy the large amount of choices we all have!
Went to my kubota dealer yesterday...no subcompact on the lot...only 2 compacts with cab...they are wiped out...usually have at least 20+ on the lot at any given time
As one John Deere sales person pointed out to me, Kubota tends to put their tractors, especially their deluxe models like the LX and Grand L, in between John Deere's R series tractors. I imagine it's all based on their business model for both of them. I do think the comparison will be fair as people that are wanting a more deluxe tractor will probably look at these two series on these two brands. I think you're absolutely right on the next step up on the 3R series and the Grand L series to compare. When you get to both brands series on 3R and GrandL you get a lot more hydraulic capabilities along with the weight.
I really wanted to like the LX3310, but couldn’t get over the platform and left fender flexing when I put a little weight on the step to climb on. The 2R operator station feels more refined to me. Anxious to follow this video series though! 👍🏼

Tim, excellent presentation. The information you presented is certainly well researched. I’ve owned my John Deere 2305 for 15 years. It is a reliable machine. I recently added the forklift attachment and discovered that I need some weight in the rear of the tractor. I’m working with my sales guy at Harvest Equipment in Swanton,Vermont to either inject ballast in my rear tires or add a rear ballast box. I would like to continue this dialogue with you outside of You Tube. You are definitely possess a high level of tractor knowledge and I would appreciate any feedback from you. Morning Tim, Nice first blush on the Kubota v Deere tractor face off. Have you thought of using a load cell for measuring the lifting capacity? Much easier on the back and easier on the concrete floor if or when house of cards comes tumbling down.
The real question is, will it do the job you want it to do. You've got fan boys on either side of aisle. But it's nice to see you guys do a comparison of the two tractors. 🚜🚜🚜

Hey Tim! Love the videos! Given weight is so important to a tractor (pulling, ballast, etc), it would be great to see if the manufactures are honest with their weight ratings. Could you put each on a trailer and take them to a weigh station for an honest comparison?
I do consider the larger horsepower and size of the Deere significant. The same issue applied in your BX vs 1025R comparison, Tim. But the remarkable thing you discovered there was the evident superiority of the 1025R for mowing. Not only a great drive-over deck and auto-connect PTO but much tighter turning radius! So I hope there's a revelation akin to that in these tests.
HP is relevant...but not “Engine HP”. I think I was clear in my statement. The Deere ‘loses’ more HP in the drivetrain than the Kubota...according to the specs. So, the difference at the PTO is less significant.
@@TractorTimewithTim Okay. My comment relates to how I think people actually shop for and compare tractors. If I needed the horsepower and size of that Deere for my farm, I'd look at it and compare it to a larger, more powerful Kubota. If I needed a Kubota of that size to trailer a tractor to job sites, I'd look at that Kubota and at a smaller Deere. The two companies are useful opponents because each represents quality and each one's ethos is different and distinctive. But their differences, no matter what class they say a tractor is in, make some comparisons feel disingenuous. That's why the 1025R winning in your faceoff with the BX so interesting-it won where most would never expect that, in turning radius. It having a better midmount system was clear before the test; but SEEING its turning ability was revelatory (even if that was in the specs, not sure). I don't expect anything of magnitude in this test but hope I am surprised.
Well done, interesting comparison! One thing I noticed right off the bat was the width of the loader arms, the JD is much wider. I imagine the Kubota would have less stability depending where the load of what's in the bucket is and from what side you approach a load compared to the JD. Best Regards, Jay
One thing I like about Tim is his unbiased knowledge stating facts. I don’t see any huge advantage on either Tractor. It reminds me of Ford and Chevrolet. Every year they bump up their engines to just out do their opponent. This will be fun to watch. Me personally I would operate either Tractor.

I'm really glad you are doing this comparison. You mentioned you had some ideas as to why the JD weighs more than the Kubota. Would you share those ideas? Does the JD chassis look beefier and larger?
Raw numbers are great to figure out if what you want to do is reasonable. But how well does it work out in real situations. Looking forward to these tests.
I went from a 2501 to a 3902 and I can tell a noticeable difference in pushing dirt with the 3902. Lifting capacity was the same! I’d imagine 5 Hp or so difference in hp wouldn’t be noticeable! I’d be more interested in torque output differences!
Is the 2038R longer or wider than the lx3310? I would need to get mine into a livestock barn to perform cleaning so I need clearance and be somewhat compact but still be able to grade a gravel road, light discing, dragging a horse arena and managing a compost pile

Will you be getting a backhoe for the Kubota so they can be compared? On paper it seems it would improve on your number 1 complaint of the JD models which is removing spoils with 180 degree rotation and a little more reach
I chose not to get a backhoe for fear of resell value. I didn’t really need another backhoe, so I felt it might cost me more than it is worth. As it is, I’m taking quite a large risk with this tractor, as I don’t need another machine of this size. I bought it exclusively so that we could provide a good long term comparison.
Yes, well understood. You do have some good machines to choose from already. Maybe a subscriber would like a guest appearance and allow their backhoe to be used for testing. The specs show greater digging force, but it would be interesting to see if the lighter tractor can take advantage of that.
I really wish Tim did more videos on these two machines. (im sure he had his reasons not to) I am thinking about getting rid of my old Kubota and getting perhaps a 2r.
It was a rout. …and folks would have seen it as biased. The large frame 2R is far superior to LX. Perhaps not a good comparison?? I dunno, but it was so far apart that comparison series was waste of time.

What’s sold me on kubota was the 3 range trans. Which gives more flexibility for mowing. And the ability to have a cab.

Weight, wheelbase, HP, FEL lift capacity, transmission type. Those are the 5 things look at. Color and brand is personal. Great video Tim. Thanks.

Right off the bat it's easy to see that the Kubota has a more sensible sized ROPS. I'm still amazed at JD's obsession with those sky-high ROPS especially when compared with similar sized machines from other manufacturers. It just means that more folks can't actually USE the ROPS as intended.
How is the use "intended"? Do you expect to roll the tractor over regularly? That's the intended use. Driver protection in case of a rollover. How would a taller ROPS prevent its intended use? I've never found ROPs height to be an issue except with door clearance if you're parking the tractor indoors, and in some uses with lower limbs on trees. So, you'll have to explain how "folks can't actually use the ROPS as intended."
@@buckhorncortez By "intended" use I meant deployed fully while the tractor is in use. :-) Not to be confused with all the other things that folks use ROPS for like tool storage, accessory shelving, fire extinguishers, lighting, etc. My garage door is too low to accommodate the ROPS and I have a lot of low hanging limbs and shrubs that would make the tractor dangerous to operate with the ROPS deployed. So I have to decide on the least likely of two scenarios, injury from the ROPS deployed or injury from it being folded. If you look at older JD tractors the fixed ROPS were much lower than they are now. Some almost half the height. Take the new 2-series for example, the ROPS is shorter than the Gen-1 2-series. Having a tractor with such a tall ROPS I tend to compare it to similar sized tractors from other manufacturers and the JD is the tallest by far. My brother just purchased a Kioti tractor and his ROPS is also much shorter than mine. Thus, my comment about "nice sensible sized ROPS". :-)
Wow, didn't notice, but the Kubota would definitely work out better for my area than the Deere (on this one point...) Good catch for sure.

looks like a good comparison, these smaller Kubotas are made light for landscapers so they don't tear up the lawn too much as it was explained to me, the L3300 is the first real workhorse, ( bigger than an LX3310. ).
Price can vary between brands and dealers. My father bought a Deere 1023e a few years ago and it was $1500 difference between one Deere dealer to another . Unfortunately the closer dealer was the more expensive one but anyone making a purchase like a tractor or vehicle should do all the homework they can.
I've been lobbying the finance committee for a 2032R for a bit. A less expensive 3310 might be more palatable. Looking forward to it!
Thank you for all the work and passion you put into all of your videos ! Refering the question about cab on Jd in europe, well at least over here in germany the 2036r (there is no 2038r) is available only WITH cab (Mouser cab). Actually it maks things a bit harder but at least - beside summer - more comfortable. It does have the air ride seat as standard, not plastic. For example, the valve adjustment for the 3point travel speed adjustment is simply not reachable. To get to the fuses right underneath the steering wheel you have to open ~12 screws an pull out the middle front part from the cab - the part right in front of the steering wheel - to be able to remove the cover to get to the fuse block. Engine is reachable normally. ir does not have "air cooling" but it does have a heater which uses the engine water. You can as well add a stereo an 2 speakers. Beside that I think the cab has as well the advantage of the better storage room inside the cab ( you can put things on the fenders and they cannot "fall out" ). That way I'm able to carry my helmet (chain saw) as well as some tools (ratchet wrench with sockets in it's selling storage box) right behind the seat - again it can't fall out because of the cab.
After the stack overflow with your prior set of arguments I am surprised to see another compilation. I guess you got a new set of user stories from revised requirements and developed a new project plan. I would offer you pointers but I'm sure you can handle the list of operations without my input.

When comparing models including the L3901 is where we would usually go. As you said, the l3560 is a totally different class of tractor.
Your Kubota weights, sometimes are without the tires. Often they use a shipping weight, not operating weight.

L3901 has many less features than these two machines, right?
@@TractorTimewithTim The biggest difference is L3901 is a mechanically older design. The only feature they really lack is a mid PTO and associated mid and front implements. It has all the same standard features, but doesn't have as many accessory kits. We sell equally as many Std L as LXs, mostly to people doing more utilitarian tasks. The pricing of a standard l, and an LX, is almost exactly the same. You get more capacity for your buck in the standard l.
On the topic of weight, standard L is significantly heavier. Applications benefiting from weight, are often the differentiator on what we steer people towards. Standard when we want to weight, LX when we don't. As far as footprint, and physical size, they're very very close to each other. We would usually compare a standard L to a 3 series Deere, but since they're putting such a large engine in the 2 series now, they do kind of butt heads.

Tim great video. I will say you mentioned the two comparable Kubota tractors to 2038R were LX3310 and Grand L but I think it would rather be L3901 (or even a L3301) and LX3310. The L3901 is about 150lbs heavier than the 2038R with 30.4HP at PTO. The LX series is meant for use on lawns and the L series, with its added weight, has some additional workhorse ability for things like hobby farmers that won’t be on their lawn all the time with it. I’ve owned both Green and Orange in the past 5 years and there is things I’ve liked about both, honestly I don’t think a guy could go wrong with either of these!
The L3901 lacks in features. I don't think a good comparison in that sense.

Its almost like these companies don’t make direct competitors with each other, whether it be for marketing reasons or just because they believe in different solutions for their customer needs. Either way I enjoy the large amount of choices we all have!
Went to my kubota dealer yesterday...no subcompact on the lot...only 2 compacts with cab...they are wiped out...usually have at least 20+ on the lot at any given time
As one John Deere sales person pointed out to me, Kubota tends to put their tractors, especially their deluxe models like the LX and Grand L, in between John Deere's R series tractors. I imagine it's all based on their business model for both of them. I do think the comparison will be fair as people that are wanting a more deluxe tractor will probably look at these two series on these two brands. I think you're absolutely right on the next step up on the 3R series and the Grand L series to compare. When you get to both brands series on 3R and GrandL you get a lot more hydraulic capabilities along with the weight.

I really wanted to like the LX3310, but couldn’t get over the platform and left fender flexing when I put a little weight on the step to climb on. The 2R operator station feels more refined to me. Anxious to follow this video series though! 👍🏼

Tim, excellent presentation. The information you presented is certainly well researched. I’ve owned my John Deere 2305 for 15 years. It is a reliable machine. I recently added the forklift attachment and discovered that I need some weight in the rear of the tractor. I’m working with my sales guy at Harvest Equipment in Swanton,Vermont to either inject ballast in my rear tires or add a rear ballast box. Hey Tim! Love the videos! Given weight is so important to a tractor (pulling, ballast, etc), it would be great to see if the manufactures are honest with their weight ratings. Could you put each on a trailer and take them to a weigh station for an honest comparison?
I like this idea as well. I use my local recycli g center or nursery for good enouph scales.

I do consider the larger horsepower and size of the Deere significant. The same issue applied in your BX vs 1025R comparison, Tim. But the remarkable thing you discovered there was the evident superiority of the 1025R for mowing. Not only a great drive-over deck and auto-connect PTO but much tighter turning radius! So I hope there's a revelation akin to that in these tests.
HP is relevant...but not “Engine HP”. I think I was clear in my statement.
The Deere ‘loses’ more HP in the drivetrain than the Kubota...according to the specs. So, the difference at the PTO is less significant.
@@TractorTimewithTim Okay. My comment relates to how I think people actually shop for and compare tractors. If I needed the horsepower and size of that Deere for my farm, I'd look at it and compare it to a larger, more powerful Kubota. If I needed a Kubota of that size to trailer a tractor to job sites, I'd look at that Kubota and at a smaller Deere.
The two companies are useful opponents because each represents quality and each one's ethos is different and distinctive. But their differences, no matter what class they say a tractor is in, make some comparisons feel disingenuous. That's why the 1025R winning in your faceoff with the BX so interesting-it won where most would never expect that, in turning radius. It having a better midmount system was clear before the test; but SEEING its turning ability was revelatory (even if that was in the specs, not sure). I don't expect anything of magnitude in this test but hope I am surprised.

Well done, interesting comparison! One thing I noticed right off the bat was the width of the loader arms, the JD is much wider. I imagine the Kubota would have less stability depending where the load of what's in the bucket is and from what side you approach a load compared to the JD. Best Regards, Jay

One thing I like about Tim is his unbiased knowledge stating facts. I don’t see any huge advantage on either Tractor. It reminds me of Ford and Chevrolet. Every year they bump up their engines to just out do their opponent. This will be fun to watch. Me personally I would operate either Tractor.

I went from a 2501 to a 3902 and I can tell a noticeable difference in pushing dirt with the 3902.
Lifting capacity was the same! I’d imagine 5 Hp or so difference in hp wouldn’t be noticeable! I’d be more interested in torque output differences!

We just got done installing our loader on our 1025r and the loader completely changes how you can use your 1025r.
Absolutely! I’ve long said that the 1025r is of limited use without the loader.

Yea. We should be able to hit those things. Cept for the washer fluid!
Is the 2038R longer or wider than the lx3310? I would need to get mine into a livestock barn to perform cleaning so I need clearance and be somewhat compact but still be able to grade a gravel road, light discing, dragging a horse arena and managing a compost pile
I’ll have to measure. I can say that the lx3310 loader ‘sticks out’ much further, making maneuvering more difficult.

Will you be getting a backhoe for the Kubota so they can be compared? On paper it seems it would improve on your number 1 complaint of the JD models which is removing spoils with 180 degree rotation and a little more reach
I chose not to get a backhoe for fear of resell value.
I didn’t really need another backhoe, so I felt it might cost me more than it is worth.
As it is, I’m taking quite a large risk with this tractor, as I don’t need another machine of this size. I bought it exclusively so that we could provide a good long term comparison.
Yes, well understood. You do have some good machines to choose from already. Maybe a subscriber would like a guest appearance and allow their backhoe to be used for testing. The specs show greater digging force, but it would be interesting to see if the lighter tractor can take advantage of that.

It was a rout. …and folks would have seen it as biased. The large frame 2R is far superior to LX. Perhaps not a good comparison?? I dunno, but it was so far apart that comparison series was waste of time.

Is the PTO hp on the 2032r enough to run the 72” mower deck? Or should you upgrade to the 2038r?
The 72” sometimes makes the 38 grunt…but you could probably get by with the 32 … you might have to slow down.
