Thank you! I have a 1 year old cat, and we just adopted a kitten. My older cat is EXTREMELY territorial, we have a pretty small apartment which I think definitely plays a factor in how much space they are able to share. We’re keeping them separated, we let the older cat see the kitten once while the kitten was in a protected cage, there’s a lot of hissing and hissing through doors by the older cat. We’re on day 2, we’re going to take this extremely slowly

Great advice! Personally, I think introducing Maine Coons to each other is easier than introducing other cats, like strays or shelter cats. Their life hasn't been as rough and they don't need to "fight" for food, attention, toys, etc. When we got Milo, he was with Max all the time from Day 1. @@lifewithmainecooncats I agree as well... with the exception of mine, lol. He was abandoned as a wee kitten and I rescued him from the street. He had a rough beginning. (I don't think he's full blood, but definitely looks like a Maine Coon-- just with more cattitude) 💕
I introduced a maine coon kitten to my 4 year old one, the older cat was hissing and hiding because she was scared. They will probably be fine with each other soon because the old maine coon is a very nice cat.

They dont touch each other, but do follow each other around curiously. However it is still progress so I’m not sure if I’m just being overly worried. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on how to introduce a kitten to a resident cat. I also have a brand new video on this topic. If interested, check it out here: ruclips.net/video/WSz8UltbZH4/видео.html
Thank you for taking the time to do this video. I have a two year old spayed female Maine coon and a 13 week old male Maine coon kitten from the same breeder. So far the adult cat has done a lot of hissing and swatting at the carrier, but at times she is calm in the same room while I have the kitten in a very large carrier with a big screen door they can see each other through a few times a day. The kitten also has his own private room and space and I am slowly introducing him around the house. I did scent intros before face to face, now on day 7.
I have a cat called Tchalla, he's one year now but we decided to get another kitten, he hissed at Cheetara for three days and today he just walks by her and looks, so I think he's already used to the idea but he's casually hiding it, obviously I still keep them apart because Im not certain what he'll do to her but I sense a change.
I have two older brothers? One teenager very sweet and playful? I just got a new two month old Persian, who is very active! I did leave her in my room and gave her litter box and food in my bathroom? But she wanted to come out really badly and cried when I shut the door? So I’ll let her out to look around, I didn’t let the other cats around her right away? But when she did see them she hisses and growls? My teenager cat really is sweet and curious and would like to play with her but she won’t play with her. She just growls? This is only been two days though.😅
My older cat was found in a parking lot at four months and he’s about a year now at this point. Just got a new kitten for my sister and my cat is having zero issues, just curious and wanting to play. The kitten is having a time though…
I had two adult sister cats (10 y/o) unfortunately one passed recently and my cat is now alone. I feel bad for leaving her alone when I go to work, her behavior has changed to extremely dependent. I’m thinking of adopting two male brother kittens my friend has rescued. Not sure how that’s going to go but I’m glad I came across your video. Fingers crossed she’ll be okay with two brothers 🙏
I am just a bit worried because this new baby kitten is very playful and our older cat didn't even play with his brother, as soon as they became adults any play-fight turned real. Our older cat is more or less the neighbourhood cat and spends most of the time outside but visits every day to eat and rub his head and body inside when we let him in. He is a very Tom cat and doesn't like to play he just chills and sits next to me sometimes and eats and travels during the day. I know the little cat will want to play i am just worried the big one will hurt him. At the moment he is doing his best to avoid the little one and ignore him but does appear jealous or afraid of something 10x smaller than him.
Thank you so much, next month I’m going to rescue a new kitten and my 2 year old female cat is very sassy, I really hope this helps a she isn’t territorial or aggressive.
I’ve just brought home a tiny kitten and he’s been kept in a completely separate room. My older cat (a 10 year old rescue who we’ve had for 3 years and was very bonded to me) was fine the first day but on the 3rd day he’s become clearly upset/jealous. He sits up on top of the kitchen counters and won’t come to me for snuggles which he used to do all time time. Will this pass? My older cat is my absolute world and I don’t want to ruin that
We have a stray kitten in our backyard. Saw another one today, but may already have a home as she was super cuddly unlike the other, younger one. We're trying to catch that younger one as it can't be over 2 months old. My friend will try to introduce it to her cat, but him having rejected a kitten before, the backup plan is that my mom and I will introduce it to our cat. He is very friendly to the other pets in the house so it's more likely to work. Just giving an opportunity to my friend first since she really wanted to adopt another cat for a while. Will keep this video in mind when the time comes.
I'm getting a 2 month old kitten and the older cat is not friendly to other cats at all. I have done this before and it took a month or so to let them be actually in the be same room. My older cat was declawed the kitten has claws.
i’m gonna be adopting a MC / domestic long hair mix and my older sister has a regular domestic short hair so i’m just hoping these guys will get along 😩😩
Thanks so much for this video! I do need to ask, would it be much different if it were to be an older FEMALE and a younger MALE? Thanks! Female (lady) - 16 Female (mimi) - 6 Male (jackson) - couple months - year
You would be absolutely surprised at his reaction after a few days/weeks. My male cat was aged 17 years old when I introduced a new kitten (and believe me, I did not think he would tolerate any other cat), he hissed at first, and there were a few swipes, but after a couple of weeks, he was acting like a kitten himself!! He had a new lease of life and I have never regretted taking the kitten. They play together - and prior to her coming along, my cat was the laziest lump EVER!! After seeing his change in character, I would certainly do this again. YOU think he won't accept another cat/kitten, but you will be very surprised how moody, lazy, older cats change, with a new addition. I would NEVER have believed my grumpy, lazy boy, would have such fun with a new companion, until I saw it for myself. He is still the boss, and he is in charge, he chases the youngster about - but look out for when she has her mad half hour - he runs for his life!! It is comical to see, he chases her, and the next thing you know, she is chasing him and bossing him about!! PS: It did take a week before the kitten would be in the same room as my cat - so don't rush things. she hid in the kitchen, but slowly came out to have a look around. Introduce slowly, and let them set the pace.
I have a 5 month old kitten (Ji-ah) but she’s really clingy and follows me everywhere. We are adopting another 5 month old kitten this weekend, how do I make sure she doesn’t get mad or jealous when I’m playing with the other kitten instead of her? And should the new kitten stay in her separate room the whole day?
Try playing with and petting them both at the same time. Every kitten is different so the amount of time they need to be separated will vary but just keep an eye on her and you will know what’s best for her.
We don’t give out our breeders’ information for privacy reasons. You can find a Maine Coon breeder by looking on cfa.org or tica.org. Many breeders are on Instagram and Facebook, which is how I found Moose’s breeder. Our Maine Coons are all European Maine Coons. Do lots of research. Expect to pay anywhere from $1,000 to $4,000 for a purebred kitten. It may take a while to find a breeder who has what you’re looking for. A good breeder will be proud of the Maine Coon breed and will want their kittens to go to good homes. A good breeder doesn’t make a lot of money breeding because the money they make goes back to their cats. Avoid backyard breeders. How a kitten is raised is everything! Ask questions, ask for references, ask to FaceTime to see the kittens if something feels off. Be careful of scammers. Hope this helps. Good luck!
My 13 year old cat tolerates and is even affectionate at times to my hyper 4 year old Chihuahua mix. I wonder if she has the personality that would accept a kitten. I tried this years ago with my other, more ornery cat and it didn't go well.
I've rescued 13 Cats in the last year. I always wanted to keep one home to be a little sister/brother to my adult cat. She didn't respond well to ANY of them. I think I might give up. I did everything by the books but she is sooooo territorial. 😔
Yeah after 2 months my older cat still does this if my kitten gets over rambunctious. It will take time for Jazzy and Bandit to get use to each other r I don't expect them to be buddies but so far they are tolerating each other
Just brought two kittens home to a senior male cat. They’ve been separated for two weeks. The senior cat runs away every time I try to introduce them. He hissed twice. Not sure what to do
I have my kitten in his playpen I have an older cat he’s 4 years old he sometimes hissing at the kitten but now my older cat is scared of the kitty lol 😂
My problem is my kitten 5months has bin here 2 months and just has sooo much energy I play with him 3 times a days 20mins each time and he still pounces on nocking my 16year old cat over, chasing him and nipping his tail they would get along if he did not do that and I don’t know how to help:(
I would keep them separated the first few days, supervise them when they’re together and be sure to give your older cat lots of attention and love so they don’t get jealous!
Honestly it’s mostly time u gotta be patient with them.I brought home a kitten, kitten had to nurture her myself it’s 5 months now.I first interact them at 3 months my 5 year old cat hiss a few times & be on his own.also like she said don’t forget to show love to your other cats if u have more that is a must!.Those are two important things.now there getting along a lot better now.Waiting on the cuddling part🥰 oh btw my 5yr is Low Key to his self but Loki is the name. The little 5 months now is Kora yes like The Legend Of Korra but with only one R hahaha she a bady lol
How do you handle introducing a kitten when you have 2 cats and 3 dogs. My alpha male cat is the eldest of all the animals and he knows he is king. He’s always going after our other cat and harassing her. She hates him. I’m hoping the new kitten and it’s energy will be a positive thing for our alpha. The kitten we’re considering is EXTREMELY chill. Albeit very playful, but amongst other kittens in the cat room at the shelter he’s very passive. So, maybe it’ll go well? I am still very apprehensive as our alpha male is defensive.
I have separated my kitten in a room - today (3rd day) i introduced a high screen between main area and room - the kitten just jumped over it! My older (she) cat was howling and hissing like crazy, when he appeared over the top! We had a kitten 3 years ago and my older cat hated him - we had 3 floors (in France) and she lived a lot on the top floor. Not here; we are all on one floor! Crunch time soonI She is going out - kitten is not as he has not been neutered yet. Have just ordered a tower to get kitten out of the way of her. Wish me luck!
I have a kitten who is 4 month.and a new one who is just 2 week.my baby kitten is not scared of the older kitten.buty older kitten is extremely jealous.and he is not comming to me 🙂🙂he is so angry.and even wants to hit the baby.I love them both. What should I do.🙂
Update in comments! Its been 2 months! I have the absolute more aggressive, sassy female cat and I got two kittens because I know how lonely she gets when Im not here. Is day two. She's..... Very, very mad....... We'll see how this goes! Wish me good luck and success!
How's it going with your older sassy lady and the kittens? I'm wondering if to do the same thing, however in the past she has not reacted well to seeing other cats outside etc
Update!!!!! My cat and the kittens are getting along SO MUCH BETTER!!! They eat and play together! They even groom one another and I'm so happy! It took a lot of work but things are going well. There's hissing sometimes, mostly from my resident cat towards them, but they've never gotten in a fight. My resident cat hisses and slaps them when she wants them away, but won't actually harm them. They love and groom her. It's adorable. I believe in the next couple of months the hissing should be even less 🐱🐱🐱
Not stupid, but yes. Kittens sleep a lot and we made sure they had lots of toys and entertainment so they weren’t bored. The amount of time we separated them varied with each kitten. But usually they didn’t need to be separated anymore after a few days. And we never separated Moose because he caught on so quickly and just kept his distance from our other cats at first.
@@lifewithmainecooncats Thank you so much. We're getting our first kitten (Pandora) next week and since it's currently really hard to find kittens we will get our second kitten 5 weeks later. I'm thinking about if I could let her sleep in one of our rooms at the beginning since we live in a house and I'm worried that she could find a place to get stuck or fall down from while I'm not around.
I'm considering getting a kitten as a companion for my much older grown cat. She needs some company so that she can stop following me everywhere lol. 😅 Would I have to get a boy kitten so that they won't fight? I've heard that girl cats are very territorial and will fight each other. I've seen it before too.

got a 5 yr old and a new 7 month old and our older cat refuses to be nice regaurdless of the barriers between them the treats for the older cat, he just wants to kill the younger one so were going to keep him to one side of the house while the older cat has now lost half of the house due to his behavior. and once this little man is older the whole house is fair game. now i love my older cat, he was a kitten when he introduced him to his late brother and he was in this little mans shoes once. i love these cats but if the older one attacks the young one to the point of injury i may be finding a new home for my older cat, i cant handle the constant aggression towards not only the kitten but towards me.

All of your cats are extremely beautiful, I’m jealous haha 😭❤️❤️
I have two older brothers? One teenager very sweet and playful? I just got a new two month old Persian, who is very active! I did leave her in my room and gave her litter box and food in my bathroom? But she wanted to come out really badly and cried when I shut the door? So I’ll let her out to look around, I didn’t let the other cats around her right away? But when she did see them she hisses and growls? My teenager cat really is sweet and curious and would like to play with her but she won’t play with her. She just growls? This is only been two days though.😅
Very helpful, your cats are absolutely gorgeous!!!
Thank you so much!
Wow those are some nice cats!!
Thank you!!!! So much very good information for ALL cats!!!!!
Loved these tips, as well as the new intro!
Thanks so much for the tips just got a kitten and have a older cat so this is so good
Yes, it was very helpful! Thanks a lot! ❤
Thank u for this video we just got a kitten and there is hissing going on great tips
You’re welcome! 😺
Loved the short snipits...
Great and sweet coaching video.
Thanks :)
Tysm my mom rlly needed this with our kitten and our older kitten
You’re welcome ❤️ thanks for watching!
The MC breeders I have worked with also recommend using Feliway spray too!!!
Great tip! 👍🏻😺
Hate that stuff ! Ill send you mine if petco and chewy doesnt take them back
I am just a bit worried because this new baby kitten is very playful and our older cat didn't even play with his brother, as soon as they became adults any play-fight turned real.
My older cat is my absolute world and I don’t want to ruin that
Yes, it should pass in time. 🙏🏻
this is what i’m afraid of :( i’m getting a new kitty tomorrow. has it gotten better ??
so cute ty
Moose so cute☺️
New intro is awesome 🥰
When we got our cat Oscar he hid and was very shy for the first 2 weeks or so, also Fireball really didn't like him
We have a stray kitten in our backyard.
Thank you so much for this helpful video
You’re welcome! Thank you so much for watching!
I'm getting a 2 month old kitten and the older cat is not friendly to other cats at all. I have done this before and it took a month or so to let them be actually in the be same room. My older cat was declawed the kitten has claws.
Thank you so much for this video. Now, I am ready to introduce my new kitten to my old cat.
How to introduce more cats to one is there a way can you say because if can mean i like to pet more male cat to male cst
Gosh he is cute ❤️
This is great thanks
i’m gonna be adopting a MC / domestic long hair mix and my older sister has a regular domestic short hair so i’m just hoping these guys will get along 😩😩
Thanks so much for this video! I do need to ask, would it be much different if it were to be an older FEMALE and a younger MALE? Thanks!
Female (lady) - 16
Female (mimi) - 6
Male (jackson) - couple months - year
You’re welcome and thank you for watching! I would say it wouldn’t be much different but all cats have their own unique personalities. Good luck! 😺
I would love to get another cat, but my wee bully has other plans. He likes being an only child. >
Yep me too with mine .....🤣😂😅
Thank you this was a very helpful
You’re welcome! Happy to hear that!
Very helpful thank you!!!
You’re welcome! Thank you for watching!
I would welcome tips on how to adopt a Maine Coon.... moose is adorable.... where did you find moose?
Thank you! Please tell, what kind of kitty is Annie? She looks like a different species. Is she a RagDoll ?
Annie is a Ragdoll mix!
I've rescued 13 Cats in the last year. I always wanted to keep one home to be a little sister/brother to my adult cat. She didn't respond well to ANY of them. I think I might give up. I did everything by the books but she is sooooo territorial. 😔
Sorry to hear that.
Yeah after 2 months my older cat still does this if my kitten gets over rambunctious. It will take time for Jazzy and Bandit to get use to each other r I don't expect them to be buddies but so far they are tolerating each other
My new kitten is warming up but will still hiss when I open the door to the room he’s in. It’ll be a week tomorrow.
Thanks for this..
I will try that thank you😺😺😺
Just brought two kittens home to a senior male cat. They’ve been separated for two weeks. The senior cat runs away every time I try to introduce them. He hissed twice. Not sure what to do
Thanks so much, you’ve given me hope! Just brought a little guy home tonight to meet my 7 year old, and it’s not going well.
Aww sorry to hear that. Good luck and hope it gets better for you!
@@lifewithmainecooncats it’s better! They play rough, but they are sleeping in the same cat tower and sharing meals!
This is how i feel ! .my older cat was rescued too and has never been around other cats since 3 months ? The kitten is used to other cats
@@awake8256 how did you help to get them along
I have my kitten in his playpen I have an older cat he’s 4 years old he sometimes hissing at the kitten but now my older cat is scared of the kitty lol 😂
My problem is my kitten 5months has bin here 2 months and just has sooo much energy I play with him 3 times a days 20mins each time and he still pounces on nocking my 16year old cat over, chasing him and nipping his tail they would get along if he did not do that and I don’t know how to help:(
New intro, cool
And will your cats accept more cats if you bring just asking because am also wanting to bring more cats step by step thats it
Each cat has their own personality and if you introduce them the right way then I think that everything should be fine!
IN my case I have a older cat meeting a kitten (had em first) ..what do I do ?
I would keep them separated the first few days, supervise them when they’re together and be sure to give your older cat lots of attention and love so they don’t get jealous!
@@lifewithmainecooncats *Update , everything is going great there the bestest of friends now thanks
My kitten wants to play with my older cat but my older cta doesn't wanna play with him and he attacks him
Honestly it’s mostly time u gotta be patient with them.I brought home a kitten, kitten had to nurture her myself it’s 5 months now.I first interact them at 3 months my 5 year old cat hiss a few times & be on his own.also like she said don’t forget to show love to your other cats if u have more that is a must!.Those are two important things.now there getting along a lot better now.Waiting on the cuddling part🥰 oh btw my 5yr is Low Key to his self but Loki is the name. The little 5 months now is Kora yes like The Legend Of Korra but with only one R hahaha she a bady lol
Your cats are beautiful :o
How do you handle introducing a kitten when you have 2 cats and 3 dogs. My alpha male cat is the eldest of all the animals and he knows he is king. He’s always going after our other cat and harassing her. She hates him. I’m hoping the new kitten and it’s energy will be a positive thing for our alpha. The kitten we’re considering is EXTREMELY chill. Albeit very playful, but amongst other kittens in the cat room at the shelter he’s very passive. So, maybe it’ll go well? I am still very apprehensive as our alpha male is defensive.
I tried the play but my older cat gets so fixated on my kitten and starts growling and hissing and won’t even acknowledge toys what do I do
Just give it time and it’ll get better ❤️
I just got two new kittens and my older cat is super pissed hoping this helps cuz she is mad mad about the situation.
Thank you
You’re welcome and thank you for watching!
I had to foster two kittens (not at the same time) my cat was fine with them after I bathed them and let them do whatever
What if you don’t have another room to separate
Then I would suggest a playpen! Not all kittens need to be separated. We never had to separate our Moose. He was a quick learner.
Been trying to get our older cat to accept the kitten for 8 months now.... nothing works . It's heartbreaking.
So sorry to hear that.
awww a black smokey
I have separated my kitten in a room - today (3rd day) i introduced a high screen between main area and room - the kitten just jumped over it! My older (she) cat was howling and hissing like crazy, when he appeared over the top! We had a kitten 3 years ago and my older cat hated him - we had 3 floors (in France) and she lived a lot on the top floor. Not here; we are all on one floor! Crunch time soonI She is going out - kitten is not as he has not been neutered yet. Have just ordered a tower to get kitten out of the way of her. Wish me luck!
Good luck!
My cat just hisses, i tried all the steps but all my cat does is hiss
I have a kitten who is 4 month.and a new one who is just 2 week.my baby kitten is not scared of the older kitten.buty older kitten is extremely jealous.and he is not comming to me 🙂🙂he is so angry.and even wants to hit the baby.I love them both. What should I do.🙂
Give it time and make sure they both have places to hide. And give them both equal amounts of attention 💕
How many days it take to introduce them
It was different for each of our cats but usually between 3-7 days they became a lot more comfortable together.
Thanks for the help and i have doubts now in this video i mean your two cats if you want to bring the third ca how will yoi introduce
Update in comments! Its been 2 months!
I have the absolute more aggressive, sassy female cat and I got two kittens because I know how lonely she gets when Im not here. Is day two.
She's..... Very, very mad.......
We'll see how this goes! Wish me good luck and success!
Good luck!!
Hi there, please update us!
How's it going with your older sassy lady and the kittens? I'm wondering if to do the same thing, however in the past she has not reacted well to seeing other cats outside etc
Why is your resident cat angry?
Might be a stupid question but did you leave the kitten alone at night in a room?
All cats have their own personalities and their upbringing is everything, but our girl cats have never fought before so I would say no.
great tips my aunts cat sitting this week for my uncle hes on vacay and shelby did just fine with the cat hes a Persian and somehow they got along. btw give my sweeties a hug please
Thanks for this video .My kitten was a rescue that we trapped.no shelter had room sooo i brought him on a plane home .hes gone through alot but its been months of no sleep trying to give my 9 yr old cat and kitten attn !!! I have never had this hard of a time introducing a kitten to a cat ! My older one scared the kitten so bad he peed himself in this huge crate i had him in .thank god he was in the crate. This is especially hard because i travel out of state for work and am gone a couple weeks .my poor brother is stuck feeding them seperately etc.also the feliway things caused MAJOR marking probs with the kitten .so i have finally got him using his box again .i hate those things .anyways ,Any more suggestions would help sooooo much .im so scared all this time and money and love is going to be worthless and ill have to rehome the kitten .who btw is getting older now !
got a 5 yr old and a new 7 month old and our older cat refuses to be nice regaurdless of the barriers between them the treats for the older cat, he just wants to kill the younger one so were going to keep him to one side of the house while the older cat has now lost half of the house due to his behavior. and once this little man is older the whole house is fair game.
now i love my older cat, he was a kitten when he introduced him to his late brother and he was in this little mans shoes once. i love these cats but if the older one attacks the young one to the point of injury i may be finding a new home for my older cat, i cant handle the constant aggression towards not only the kitten but towards me.
Omg thank you
You’re welcome!
My adult cats are not staying in with me like before since the new kitten arrived. They're scared of the new kittens. What do i do?
Give it time and it should get better.
My cat is trying to get used to my new sphynx kitten and its going so far lol
