I feel like he really sold shadow affinity short in favor of lunar affinity, like yes I can see how annoying lunar storm phase would be for Woodie, but there is a way to get over the downside as you said, you can double your transformation times with careful timing and be in the form you want. You'll want to be moose for most fights that you can get away with being a moose anyway (fights that don't require special tactics, like Crab King or Fuelweaver) because it saves resources for your teammates, inventory space from the weapons and armor you'd be carrying otherwise, don't have to keep an eye on equipment durability constantly, night vision, passive regen, charge to dodge or deal with mobs, he has so much going for him. He is not a DPS monster like Wolfgang but his existence itself is utility for his teammates, he consumes very few resources to be very useful, set him up with some jellybeans and he'll literally tank forever at no armor cost. And he takes care of the bees or the woven shadows like a champ, if you have teammates to deal with the bosses' other gimmicks. Shadow affinity just adds another positive on to the pile. He now doesn't give a flip about sanity as a moose either. He can keep fighting -100 sanity aura bosses with no hurdles. That's pretty damn good. And in a pinch, you can turn into a goose and run away back to base to get some health and sanity restoring items with no threat being able to touch you. His forms have three downsides; lowered hunger after transforming, forced transformation at full moons, and sanity drain. The hunger can be somewhat alleviated with a perk that makes it set to something around 30, which if you transform when you're near starvation, you actually GAIN hunger so with careful management, it turns into an upside. The full moons prolong your form time so it can also be turned into an upside with careful management. The sanity drain can't be alleviated any other way than the affinity.
for those that want the affinity perks as part of base kit there is an alternative. A hassle free client side mod called Instantly Insights exists, that unlocks skill tree points and both affinity paths.
This was a really good deep-dive into Woody's perks. As someone who cheat-unlocked them, just to have, and hadn't given them a second thought, this was informative. Also swayed my opinion a bit. Woody, for me, has always been a goofy character for wood farming. But his new skill-tree abilities really do add some nice bonuses to him, and make him actually be worth playing as. In specifics: Faster gathering; no full-moon transformation and to an extent the hat/cane. Also the Thumper-Beaver seems cool as well. I might give him a serious shot in the next world I play in.
Great video going over the basics of Woodie's skill tree! Only thing I'd vehemently disagree on is the overemphasis on his Lunar Affinity skill. Once moonstorms are activated yes of course it should basically always be taken over Shadow Affinity, but moonstorms won't be activated until basically bare minimum 3-4 hours of gameplay. You can easily make a celestial portal and idol in that time to change your tree to switch out to Lunar, so starting with it just doesn't do much unless you know you're playing with a good Wicker player. This is an important distinction to make since I can see many Woodie players taking the Lunar Affinity all the time regardless of whether it actually helps them or not. Other than that yippee :D
Shadow affinity isn't cool at all if you're not fighting alone, because nightmares will still atack your teammates, thus still are a problem for the team. On the other side being forcefully transformed every now and the is such a pain in the ass imo.
@@noelka8134 Actually, Woodie's Shadow Affinity DOES attract your teammates nightmare creatures, meaning they won't go after them. It's actually even more useful in a team setting.
@@maddestofmatts7546 oh, well, that changes things. But for me nightmares are still free(ish) nightmare fuel and sanity, soooooo... yeah, it pretty much depends on your preference
@@maddestofmatts7546 Compare and contrast these 2 things: 1) How often does full moon happen, with Woody force-transforming? Even without Lunar Storms in the equation, it's still once every 20 days. And those transformations can get in the way of free pig farming, of getting the Moon Caller Staff, or generally helping the team with whatever X effort they're doing at the time, sometimes including a Deerclops fight. 2) How often are you or your teammates unintentionally insane, for the Shadow-Attraction to play a key role? Once every few hours? (which is a long while in DST time) It's not that Shadow Affinity isn't helpful, it certainly can be. But Lunar Affinity is more helpful, because it kicks in more often. The Lunar is what is a must.
I strongly disagee with your affinity view. Shadow wrangler is way better then the moonproof one. Yes , in late game and in wickerbottom worlds transforming every night is anoying. But if you have no wicker on your team , lunar perk would affect you so late in the run , you might as well make a celestial portal to pick it. And to then drop it. Shadow alingment lets you stay in a were-for indefynately with no conciquences. First upside: you dont have to fight nightmare creatures as moose and beaver before continueing on with your task. Seccond upside: you dont have to consume nearly as much sanity food. Were-forms are costly on sanity , and if you dont wanna be interupted , you normaly would chug a whole bunch of sanity food ,before transformation. And finaly , the third point: Goose form no longer has a chance to be a death threat! Without this skill , biggest goose downside is the fact that if you go insane in this form , you are as good as dead. You cant fight back , and you cant run away. Your best bet is to run around on top of the ocean , so when you transform back , you wont be locked into lethal animation , but drown instead and havd a bit of time to get your bearings. Summary: thanks to this perk , you have no aditional threats in wereforms , and you can use them back to back. Downsides: its not the lunar one. Lunar on the other hand , lets you skip out on the anoying part of your life , thats all. Its esential for moonstorm(but not neccesary if you be turning into a form that suits you just before the natural transformation) and a good thing to have if there is a wickerbottom on the team. But overall , were-ness became less of a curse since solo ds , and now its managable enough. Overall my stands as follows: shadow one is more consistently good and lets you utilise your were form better. Lunar one is usefull in a handfull of specific scenarious , and you may just repick for it , because chances are: you would be able. But overall: great video. Edit: if anyone is up for disgustion , you must know: i am itching for one of those. I might be wrong, you might be wrong. We might be wrong , we might be right. Wanna seek the truth , eh?
I agree! I loved wood hunger. Such a character defyning downside! And his beaver was better overall as a form , i belive. Right now , his curse feels more like a cool power , rather then... a curse. In solo , you have to be carefull chopping trees (something you do all the time!) , and you lost your items, while beaver was stronger overrall. Pre-rework , had you losing on wood , by munching it. Weird , just like the character is intended to be. And it felt impactfull on your gameplay. You HAD to chop trees. But also , again , turning into beaver wasn't that bad , because it was a good gathering and combat form, so you had to manage both sides. It was a gameplay defyning downside. Wonder if there are any mods that bring it back.
Shadow affinity is better for boss killing. It makes weremoose aka Woodie's strongest combat option, viable vs high insanity drain bosses. If you had Lunar affinity vs certain bosses it is impossible or atleast highly annoying to fight them in weremoose form.
I love Woodie he is my favourite character his axe lucy is powerful unlike the others is too slow to cut the tree I unlock the weremoose mastery because it deal tons of damage.
I dunno, alot of this sounds like changes Woodie should just have gotten without it being skill tree shenanigans, others feel unnecessary or overboard like the treeguard idol, and having to choose full moon resistance over something else seems a bit tedious even if the alternative isn't as useful. I've been pretty vocal of my distaste for the character skill trees in general because how it feels like it side steps many balancing issues in general, and for some characters leans what started as a Survival game, into a character driven action RPG ala Diablo or Borderlands. Also the audio balance towards the end of the video is off, can barely hear you over the music.
I d say shadow wrangler is actually good. Just rn woody is so great that most people prefer to play him mostly as a wilson with a cool talking sweatheart of an axe . I play woody mostly by transforming at every possible moment. Also lunar aligment is a shit skill concept. All it does is nulifying his last standing downside. Not such a big downside overall too. Why cant every character just get one of these? He is overall just better that willson. Which sucks! Even memorising moon cycle is somewhat of a fun downside , because it forces you into his shoes.(even thou its not enough. R.I.P. wood hunger) Character should be defyned by their weakness as much as their strength. Cool downside might bring more fun then an upside.
Should ve kept as a survival game in my opinion. You know , because its supper cool and unic. Good survival games are basicly non-existant for you after trying out don't starve. And playing it with your friends sure wouldve been fun.
I want to ask why the game nowadays run very bad? I have mods but its not like its 1000mods on just some of the most popular but with my pc gets only 40fps... i3 6100 1050ti 8gb ram and all i get is 40fps or under 40fps. All in al i hava about 10-15mods enabled idk why game is so laggy?
You said that moose defense is equal to football helmet but its 90% not 80%
I like to start fights right before the full moon, then when it rolls over to night it refills your were meter
I too!
I dont get lunar affinity, full moons are almost a boost to woody at times!

Yes I love this. What is it?? What's it from?
Great guide! I'm going to need to try to play Woodie sometime now lol
Funny how people say the lunar or shadow affinity is either a must-have or a total waste lol
That's how you know Klei did a good job in making both of them. Really adds to the feel of: "Choosing your side is a serious decision."
