I think the garland is one of the best designed items in the game. Sanity is not a common thing in games, and while a most sanity restoration methods have sound reasoning behind them new players won't think of them. How video games corelate to real live is pretty arbitrary, and in all other games you wear clothes for armor or bling and you pick flowers to make herbal medicine or something alike. When a new player decides they need to take care of their sanity they are gonna open the crafting menu and, regardless of weather they have a science machine or not, will see the garland, which is universally associated with calmness and relaxation. They will then pick a bunch of flowers and probably learn that doing a relaxing activity raises sanity, and will hopefully think about how other things like sleeping or fighting might influence sanity as well. While the connection isn't as strong they might also get that fancy clothing is associated with sanity as well. The point of the garland is not to protect new players from insanity, it's to extend the grace period they have before it kills them, while cluing them in on how the mechanic works.

Watching my friend coming home with 60+ petals and garland on his head. I immediately set up a honey farm with 6 beebox and tell him stop that. I will give him all the sugar rush he need.
The best use for petals besides rot is spring start or joining a game in spring Pretty parasol + straw hat + tree = rain immunity Its so useful to dry off early game, avoiding the massive sanity drain is basically necessary to not die for any intermediate players due to the inevitable double terrorbeak + wet weapons if you're not careful
People always tend to say this about lower level insulation or sanity items words like why would you do this when you have something better. But like all of these have a reason to exist.. what I find funny is that this is the exact same reason I used against the Tam of Shanter yet people really like the Tam o Shanter
There's a lot of nuances to sanity clothing many don't really look at it and the fact that even the pretty parasol is downplayed in this is kind of surprising when the player got nothing it's really nice to have these items. Combining the Garland and the parasol gives you a top hat for 2 days it's really not bad and though some might think it's wasteful because it's like oh well butterflies and bees and everything I think it's better to try and help people understand how to propagate flowers instead of just saying don't pick them. Because they can be really useful in their own sense. Heck sometimes when I don't even have a weapon I opted to make a whirly fan so I can at least deal tool damage

keeping flowers that are next to roads is smart since more flowers does not mean more butterflies, it just means more places for them to spawn if the only place is near roads, people walking by will be able to get yummy snack :)

if you pick the shadow tree for the new skill tree for winona, you get an unlimited durability head slot item that costs 12 petals and 3 twigs, can be crafted anywhere, and restores 3.3 sanity similar to the top hat
the garland only lasts 6 days so if you're wearing it the whole time you'll only get like 64 sanity at most out of it, which is just barely more than the sanity from picking the flowers it takes to craft one though remember it spoils, so even when you have it unequipped it's gonna rot :(

you can graft garland to make flowers rot longer. simple craft garlands when flowers are almost rotten and deconstuct your garlands when they are almost broken and you are free to eat your sweer fresh flowers!
How the fuck could anyone argue about the garland so much... like if your a normal person you just make it if you having some trouble with sanity or with the occasional petals you collect if you don't eat them like me.... or if your not using petals as bait for THAT STUPID BIRD... man I hate that bird. not hard to kill just hate em' I play webber just normally ignore my sanity to explore a sizeable bit of the surface than rush the ruins... I mean I could do it with anyone but I just like webber. the spiders are easy not to trigger. and even if you have done that. easy to deaggro or turn against the boss himself...I say this from playing solo. and ruin rushing as every character. still those monkeys. OH GOD THE MONKEYS... they are horrible to deal with which makes me just want to get the ruins done SOOOOO early...nightmares easy to run or manage avoiding but the monkeys oh god... it's fine with 2. sure. 3 alright that gonna hurt and suck but fine... THAN 4 THAN 5 THAN A MILLION. Oh yeah garland... I would make it just to put on a random spider follower cause it's cute. and I would put hats on spiders just to have them wear it. if anything I would want the garland to be edible again like how the ham bat was. than their could be utility in that sense. like before it becomes stale eat it for 12 hp. maximize value.

Pigs receveid a quality of life in dst compared to the old first game, where they will keep working even at large distances, meaning they work better and longer in dst = inadvertently buffed this secret tecnique, because they're focused on the job and will not run away, if not triggered by bad animals like spiders or hounds. I do it a lot from time to time this tecnique to gain a lot of sanity, and oh boy how much you gain it from it, it's incredible. Plus you gain also wood, which is the real gold of the game in contrast to gold nuggets which are low value. Although time to time, because sometimes you want low sanity or even go crazy. You can do this strategy with pigs even on night in front of a campire. They will sleep and will not ran away. Although this is season depent, as you can guess, it's better on winter and early spring than late summer and early autumn. I'm very surprised that you know about it, it means you maybe played a lot the game by yourself and discovering it blind? :)

The fashion googles are the same as tophats in terms of sanity so its better for all of new players get to farm spiders rather than destroying pig houses
you start off with a pretty good amount of sanity and you realistically wont really need to pick 12 flowers to make the garland in the first few days. even so early on, there's better head slot items, and until you get those you're probably better off leaving the slot empty and eating things like cooked green caps while you focus on progressing. im not at all opposed to picking the occasional flower but honestly even then it'll take a while to gather enough for the full garland. not to mention i feel like it could be argued that 10~ sanity a day isnt really worth an early game inventory slot if youre gonna be swapping it for something like a helmet but then again who am i to tell you how to play the game? the garland is legit such an awesome looking hat and it has some great skins. very demure as they say
@@3kto I look at it this way, i might not find many green caps as i look for resources and in early autumn there's not much time to scrounge for them during their active period before full night hits. I'll often put off making a garland for a day or two but unless I'm Wendy or Maxwell i'll need some sort of sanity measure by then, and a garland works as a very set it and forget it option while I focus on early base location hunting and setup.
The garland is a convenient early game item that saves time while exploring. Perfect if you plan on digging graves. Rot is easy to come by if you have access to caves.

you can graft garland to make flowers rot longer. simple craft garlands when flowers are almost rotten and deconstuct your garlands when they are almost broken and you are free to eat your sweer fresh flowers!

I play webber just normally ignore my sanity to explore a sizeable bit of the surface than rush the ruins... I mean I could do it with anyone but I just like webber. the spiders are easy not to trigger. and even if you have done that. easy to deaggro or turn against the boss himself...I say this from playing solo. and ruin rushing as every character. still those monkeys. With time the flowers respawn (after rain), but the garland sucks either way.

Mostly playing wurt and the garland lowers sanity instead making it less useful cause if we need low sanity we can just eat raw green caps.
