It's such a pleasure sitting here in Oklahoma City while it's 6 degrees outside watching you craft these beautiful pieces. I have been fusing glass for about five years, and am interested in starting pottery. Since I'm almost 70, I'll never be able to do what you do with such ease, but I know it will be fun learning.
Your teapots are so lovely and light! I love the added decoration with the fluting and the chattering (I got a set of 3 chattering tools from Bill) but the real WOW moment was seeing your carving at the end - so beautiful. Cheers from freezing Vancouver Island!🙂
Don't mean to be gushy, but I believe you to be the best teacher on RUclips. Thanks so much. Now, could you possibly make a video making a one piece cake pan. I've tried, but can't keep them from warping.
That would be a large square pan? My advice is to buy a metal one😉 If you have to make one you should buy a gritty clay body and dry the piece slowly with weights on the edges. Try drying it on Sheet rock so the middle bottom area dries evenly with the edges. By slowly I mean two weeks.

I bet you could find an old wheel in the second hand market for very little. They are buried in peoples basements from beginners who gave up. Retirees with visions of starting a hobby business. Try putting some ads saying wanted wheel. Even local schools often have them in the basements.

I threw my first attempt at a teapot this morning and coincidentally came home to see this new video from you - lovely. Makes me want to run back to the studio to try to expand the scrawny belly of mine out before it dries out too much. One question: Why don’t you throw your spouts off the hump instead of working with those small lumps of clay?
Christmas open studios here at Krowji (Cornish for workshop/shed) artist/makers hub here in Redruth. Coincidentally just sold a teapot earlier. Taking a break for toast, coffee and RUclips. Cold here at the moment but nothing like the cold you get in your neck of the woods, all the best
It is nice here, 10c yesterday, very cold in central Canada. Living on the coast is always warmer. Cornwall is so nice, I hope you get time to smell the roses.
These are adorable! I keep having trouble with the spout. I’m also throwing pots in our barn. My husband was able to clear about half the space plus shelving areas on both sides. No kiln at home yet though. Oh, and he’s learning to throw pots too. Already he’s saying we either have to find an affordable pugmill or make them because wedging clay is hard work. 😂 He got a major taste of it when I had him helping to wedge reclaimed clay. Do you have any tips or anything regarding bats? The MDF bats that I’ve had for some 20 +/- yrs are warped up. I prefer these to the plastic bats. I’m in the US. Any tips are helpful.
Thanks for watching. I use 1/2inch plywood with three coats of marine varnish. If you can get tempered masonite and soak them in oil that also works. I made 32 from a sheet of 1/4inch plastic board that is used in ice rinks. I also got some already round from a kitchen/bath center. Endless possibilities. A 12 inch round bat with a 6inch square cut out of the center, then 6inch tiles can be used. The pugmill is a great help. Good luck in the barn studio.
Hello, just came to look how you attach the spout (haven’t made raw pots in years) why do you trim only after putting the handle and spout because you what it to be even harder than leather hard ?
What technique were you using to carve that scene into the last tea pot? It'd be perfect for an idea I have of pottery based around old medieval woodcut prints.

I do it both ways but I always come back to the smaller ball of clay, habit I guess.

How much clay for the second teapot body?
I usually use 2 1/2lbs- 3 lbs.
