  • Super Mario Bros. was a revolutionary title for the platforming genre. What are some games that were just as revolutionary for their respective genres? I think that Watch Dogs for the Wii U was influential to the Watch Dogs for Wii U genre.

The thing thats insane about Minecraft being the most popular game to me, is that it feels like a game that should have been made decades before. Surely somebody who knew what they were doing in the 1990s could have made this game. But for whatever reason, nobody ever thought to make a sandbox game like this, until 2009.
And now its literally the thing that newbie game developers make to learn game development.

This kind of goes hand-in-hand with sandbox games to an extent but I think life sim games are definitely an interesting genre to discuss too. It's kind of hard to say which game really defines it, because in my heart, I want to say Animal Crossing, I mean look at those sales numbers on the Switch. But also, going back to the roots, it's hard to ignore what The Sims games did for it. I don't know man, I'm gonna go back to eating my chewy spree candy

"If Mario, then only Bros! 🔥" has to be the best way to start a video, ever.

Some more influential games and why:
Goldeneye 007: while doom definitely helped make FPS games popular, it was only really a PC genre for a while due to consoles not being able to run them well. Goldeneye helped change that and now FPS’s are both popular on PC and consoles.
Mario 64: it wasn’t the first 3D game, but it honestly might as well have been.
Grand Theft Auto 3: another open world game, though this one helped pave the way for a series so popular every gamer has it in their collection
Wii Sports: the anti-game. One that was so easy to understand that even moms liked it!
Guitar Hero: yes the series is dead but when it was alive it was very popular, and many credit the games to helping them get into actual music
Angry Birds: of all mobile games, this one I feel was the first to make a big splash.
Honorable mention goes to Steam, which basically made PC gaming relevant again after it started to lag behind consoles.

I consider Quake 1 the first true 3D game, it did come out exactly one day before SM64 after all

I think an honorable mention should go to the Original Legend Of Zelda for its huge influence on the Action Adventure genre because while games like Atari's Superman, Hydlide & Tutankhamun had existed before there is no denying that all other action adventure games released after the Legend Of Zelda would be compared to it.

What a breautiful video it make me think about how the video games were made a very long time ago in the Retro 80's era is when they were made and it was such a beautiful part of history, I remember playing them like that and I love this game I can't wait to see the games they make in the future because they were defined from the beginning games of the genres like how you was talking up all of them in the video like how the super mario brothers 8 bit game make up the beginning of the platformers and all of them so I can't wait to see what make in the future it will be another 80's moment you know but in the future and if you can do another video talking more about these moments I will appreciate it and I hope everyone enjoy this moment I mean this video it was beautiful and the person you was working with I hope in the future you do a collaboration and get the other guy for a new video talking about how the video games have grown in their history and what make up the beginning and how the games look today and what make them grow up to what they look today and hope you do it my friend and thank you again for this beautiful moment it make me feel good I guess you do it for you but thanks anyway to you two for this great moment I hope it to all enjoy and good luck for the future and for your videos thank you again my friend

Well for RPGs i don't think FFVII is the one as well as pokémon, thosse only made It popular in the west, as genre defining game you can go no longer without mentioning the original (as well as its entire saga) Dragon Quest it was basicaly adapting Ultima to be played on consoles with Akira Toriyama's cute artstyle and it blew up so hard that basicaly made JRPGs your Final Fantasies and Even Pokémons own to Dragon Quest for making it happen

It is kinda weird to start listing "Dooms of the genres", and slap Pokemon and FF7 as the go-to titles for RPGs... and only JRPGs, mind you. I can assure you that both owe a LOT to the very original FF1, and even more so to the original Dragon Quest, that still is bigger franchise in Japan.
And when it comes to CRPGs / WRPGs... good luck picking only one title. Wizardry might be the granddaddy of them all though.

I'm quite the outsider to RPGS so I just asked around and PK and FF7 were the only two answers I got, but great insight! Thanks!

For me, it's Doom, Super Mario 1, and Shenmue/Silent Hill 2, genre completionism aside. I mean that's what I said at my job interview when I first got into the industry, so I decided never to change my top 3.5 list just as a good luck charm.
For your consideration though, since you obviously know your stuff and seem to care about nerdy details, I have it on good authority that every time someone pronounces Bros." like that, an innocent baby Toad dies. I know all the speedrunners or whatever say it like that these days, but the correct pronunciation is unambiguous based on the Japanese transliteration [deleted I_inK to jpn box art because apparently youtube won't even accept referencing the idea of a fucking ℒ i N K--but to with: スーパーマリオブラザーズ] AND the abbreviating period at the end. After all, they're not Italian frat boys with double popped collars going to the club with spray-on tans to get their dicks wet, they're magical world-saving plumbers.
I'm mostly being silly, ironically yelling "well akshually" at the clouds, but a small part of me does shed a tear every time I hear that irreverent mispronunciation of a work that was such a spiritual touchstone to me become more and more common.

Mario defined the genre of ultimate bordeom by linearity jump and runs.
