Even as someone who's cleared the current raid tier there was still good information to learn from this. Not sure if it's a basic but perhaps you could go into the idea of slidecasting as well in a future video in relation to OGCDS/GCDs and clipping with snapshots.
Thanks for the kind words. I considered including slidecasting, but I felt that got a little too specific, even if the guide wasn't really directed at new players. In a future video perhaps!
Not sure what slidecasting is but does that have anything to do with the slight delay right before the castbar finishes where you can actually move without risking the cast being cancelled? I've noticed something like this before occasionally when playing caster classes but not sure if that was internet issues on my end or part of the intended lag the game makes you play under.
@@raventhorX Yes, that is exactly it. As the cast is about to finish, you can move and the cast will still go on. I forgot how many seconds maximum you could move from though, but you can practice it.
@@TheBigManJohn It depends on your ping and connection to the server if I remember correctly. The easiest way to figure out the slidecast window is to practice a bunch

This video is honestly fantastic. I love brushing up on the basics and fundamentals of FFXIV so I can remember how to play certain classes and so on. The only gripe I have about this video is that the visuals make it feel a tiny bit spoiler-y? I have a friend who's going through Stormblood's initial MSQ right now, wanting to catch up to my other friends and I at the end of Shadowbringers. I'd love to show him this because I know he has a little trouble with some of his inputs/timing, but I *also* don't want to advertise to him "Hey, you'll be fighting Redux Primals during Eden's 8-man raids, the Omega 8-man raids have bosses from a whole slew of other Final Fantasy games, and Hades *probably* looks like he's the end boss of an expansion because he *probably* is," and stuff. That's just my own personal gripe, and I know some of the tougher fights in the game are the only ones that USE some of these mechanics for the sake of demonstration during this video; that they don't present themselves prior anywhere in A Realm Reborn or Heavensward. I still really love this video regardless. The presentation of the video is smooth, clean, no distracting elements anywhere that are unnecessary, and the music! Oh my god, I love the music so much. It fits perfectly for keeping a clean mind and straight forward attitude in regards to paying attention and learning, listening.
The little diagrams you used to explain things are really nice, especially the snapshot mechanic which can be difficult for some people to get. Great video!
This is FANTASTIC. I always love your raid guides for how well-designed, easy to read, and visually stylish the diagrams and animations are. This video is a FANTASTIC visual explanation of some really important core mechanics. Time to throw it at all the various FF discords I'm in. XD
Now... explain Slide Casting! Genuinely though, a lot of this I kind of figured out on my own, but seeing an actual guide really helps lay it out for you. This is really nicely formatted and in no way obnoxious about it. Keep up the good work!
Congratulations on the video! it really helps a lot, I will be sharing it with groups I know in Brazil so I can help the community understand the basics! Hello from Brazil!

Very well put together, and certainly would be one of the first I'd show a new player. Well done!
awesome vid! just wanna add a bonus note for fellow melee friends, positionals CAN be hit within the boss’s hitbox and do not have to be outside the ring, as long as you are not dead center of the targeting circle and are still on the flank/rear area for the bonus
Only thing I didn't know here was clipping. I hear it all the time and sort of understood it from context, but didn't know what it exactly meant. The rest of it I learned through pain. xD Great vid.
Your guides never fail, you have a very clear way of expressing what you want to get across and obviously the visuals for these guides are top notch. Keep it up!
This is absolutely essential. Gonna pass this video around to my new FC buddies. Man I'm gonna need you to release your Spotify playlist somewhere cause I'm grooving at work rn
Jesus, the presentation of this video is great. The information is presented in a simple and easy to understand way and on top of that, aesthetically pleasing. thumbs up!
That snapshot info is really nice. I had a feeling there was something like that going on, as I play a DRG and would jump into some attacks as I see the animation start to play, cause it doesn't seem to hit me as long as I left the AoE marker beforehand, and why sometimes I'll leave the AoE but get hit still. Great informative video!
I've been playing Final Fantasy 14 off and on since the beta when my LS decided not to move over, and then after ARR. I haven't been a consistent player and i'm only now just getting to post 5.0 content to make myself ready for contemporary content when Endwalker drops. This video has been the most useful video i've watched on FFXIV ever. I only had a vague understanding of concepts like Snapshots and OGCD, but now I understand them clearly. Thank you so much for making this video!
I'm not one to comment on videos, even though I absolutely love yours, but I want to thank you for all your work, especially this one. It mights seem stupid for a regular mmo player but these concepts are difficult to understand for new players and even some veterans tend to forget the snapshots. This should be linked to new players. Thank you again for all of your videos, it's a work of art !
Thank you! It's not stupid at all. The game doesn't explain this stuff well and there's plenty of veteran players that still don't know how this stuff works. So on that note, this isn't just for new players. :)
This is so well explained and edited with good visuals for new players! I love it! People who never played an MMO could watch this and not miss anything important, good job!
Pff. Forgot to comment on the video itself. Very cool. The graphics are clean, the advice is stuff I wish I'd known when I first started playing (but might not have taken in because I was, like, not even 15), and it made me smile. It'd be nice if they added active helps about this, or maybe made it part of the Hall of the Novice. Or maybe even the Hall of...uh. Advanced. If they add that. Lol. Anyway, great stuff. Edit: HALL OF THE MASTER. Because...like...the masters in the Hall of the Novice.
Hell yeah, this video rocks! I had to learn all this concepts on my own by years of recieving hits XDD Is always nice to have his kinda videos to help the newbies!
A helpful video even for experienced players! Thank you very much for making this - I like the provided information and the way they were presented as well. The catchy music and visuals help me a lot to memorise things better. Keep up the good work!
This is very helpful, specially for new players! When I was kinda new to FFXIV a few years back, I don't even know what GCDs/OGCDs meant. I just new that they are "skills" I have to research it first what it meant until a got the idea, specially the weaving aspect, not just spamming random skill XD
I initially began playing tank when I watched your Big Pulls video a while back. I found the advice of standing on the edge between the flank and rear helpful this time, as I've started playing Dragoon more. Also, I'm super happy to see you still teaching new players!
Thank you so much for that tankswap one! I see so many tanks who try to slam out a swap after the cast bar finishes and then wonder why it didn't work. Had to explain to numerous people that you're actually supposed to swap during the castbar. To be fair, the game doesn't make this apparent to many people, which is why I don't get mad about it.
I absolutely love this, and absolutely second what others have said (wonderful visual guide to weaving and burst windows, great explanation of snapshots). Thank you for making guides that are easy to understand and visualize!
This is the kind of stuff the "Hall of Novices" should be showing people once they've gotten their brand new set. It'd be nice if they had some sort of primer like this when unlocking the first ex trials just so people at least have an idea how to move. Very well done video. Hopefully it spreads quickly.
FFXIV Vet of 9 years, knew everything shown, and STILL watched the whole thing because it was just so well done. Awesome video. Definitely getting a sub from me.
Gonna expand on the snapshot concept a bit... Part of the reason the game does the snapshot thing is that the server "tick" time (the interval at which the server processes content and executes both player and non-player actions/responses) is around 300 ms, which is a huge time span for a MMO, but mechanics visuals are client-side, not server-side, and while they're _triggered_ by server commands _the visuals are not directly bound to server tick time._ _This means that you MUST anticipate a third of a second in advance of any action that requires your reaction._ This is what produces the snapshot effect on everything non-targeted - every ~300ms the server does its position checks, etc. and if you're within range of a mechanic that's going off at that instant in time you're getting hit, and it won't matter how far away from the mechanic it may look like you are _on your end_ when it goes off. You could be halfway across an arena and get nailed if you covered that distance. On the upside, you can also exploit this behavior if you have a fast enough ping with the server, and use it to get hits in before the mob you're fighting can execute its actions. A common use case for this is landing stuns or other forms of cast disruption on a mob, which can be used to repeatedly and reliably stunlock an annoying mob or an annoying cast from a mob (e.g., High Voltage, the arena-wide paralysis, from the modes in the Binding Coil series). There's also a visual side-effect: throwing a lunge move or similar when a mechanic is about to go off (so your move starts as the mechanic ends) can make it look like you're flying into it while its visuals are firing client-slide, as was shown in the video.

A helpful video even for experienced players! Thank you very much for making this - I like the provided information and the way they were presented as well. The catchy music and visuals help me a lot to memorise things better.
Keep up the good work!
dude, i took a long break from the game, its good to see your videos are like SUPER HD MEGA HQ still. also still great choice music
Gorgeous video and great info as always!
This is very helpful, specially for new players! When I was kinda new to FFXIV a few years back, I don't even know what GCDs/OGCDs meant. I just new that they are "skills" I have to research it first what it meant until a got the idea, specially the weaving aspect, not just spamming random skill XD
Honestly, the cleanest guide to FFxiv I've ever seen. So fuckin good!
This is so excellently put together. Absolute pro tier stuff.
You seriously make some of the slickest content on RUclips - amazing work, as always!
Even as someone, who already knew the Terms in the Video, I enjoyed watching it because the Presentation was just so Darn good. Great Work!
Wow this should be a must to watch
This needs more views!!!! I've arrived at Heavensward but even I find this helpful!!! I'm still a sprout afterall! ^.~
I initially began playing tank when I watched your Big Pulls video a while back. I found the advice of standing on the edge between the flank and rear helpful this time, as I've started playing Dragoon more. Also, I'm super happy to see you still teaching new players!
I'm quite happy that I already knew all of this... What a fantastic video to share with the plethora of people coming into the game though!
Fantastic as always. A lot of really great information!
Holy shit dude! The production quality on this Video is spot on. I LOVE it!
I will show this to every new player i meet :D
Thank you so much for that tankswap one! I see so many tanks who try to slam out a swap after the cast bar finishes and then wonder why it didn't work. Had to explain to numerous people that you're actually supposed to swap during the castbar.
To be fair, the game doesn't make this apparent to many people, which is why I don't get mad about it.
Wonderful job! Essential video for FFXIV enjoyers, should be showed in game :)
I absolutely love this, and absolutely second what others have said (wonderful visual guide to weaving and burst windows, great explanation of snapshots). Thank you for making guides that are easy to understand and visualize!
Joonbob uses the superior aura horns. a person of culture
Amazing job as always, also I don't why but the lion boy named rengar made me very happy!
This is the kind of stuff the "Hall of Novices" should be showing people once they've gotten their brand new set. It'd be nice if they had some sort of primer like this when unlocking the first ex trials just so people at least have an idea how to move. Very well done video. Hopefully it spreads quickly.
This is both really informative and really well made, it's a perfect learning utility, thank you!
FFXIV Vet of 9 years, knew everything shown, and STILL watched the whole thing because it was just so well done. Awesome video. Definitely getting a sub from me.
pretty amazing. I wish it had touched uptime and it's importance but these principles would definetly increase uptime in an organic way
This video just looks great visually - it actually looks like a tutorial screen that you see in a AAA title help menu.
Awesome and clean video presentation/explanations! Keep up the great work! Great for new players like myself.
Gonna expand on the snapshot concept a bit...
Part of the reason the game does the snapshot thing is that the server "tick" time (the interval at which the server processes content and executes both player and non-player actions/responses) is around 300 ms, which is a huge time span for a MMO, but mechanics visuals are client-side, not server-side, and while they're _triggered_ by server commands _the visuals are not directly bound to server tick time._
_This means that you MUST anticipate a third of a second in advance of any action that requires your reaction._
This is what produces the snapshot effect on everything non-targeted - every ~300ms the server does its position checks, etc. and if you're within range of a mechanic that's going off at that instant in time you're getting hit, and it won't matter how far away from the mechanic it may look like you are _on your end_ when it goes off.
