  • Clockwork's nail-painting robot can paint the perfect polish in less than 10 minutes. Customers must arrive with prepped nails, since the machine does not cut or clean nails. It works by using a 3D scanner to capture the exact shape and size of your nails, then painting over it in a circular motion while you're sitting still.
    Founder and CEO Renuka Apte thinks of the Clockwork manicure as a quick, convenient service that's "complementary to nail salons." The company is hoping to offer the machine in office buildings, apartment buildings, and retail stores. The manicure at the San Francisco store is $7.99, but the company is aiming for a $10 price point once the machine is offered at external locations.

    I see this becoming a great tool in nail salons for elaborate nail-jobs as well! (If they ever sell out the patents and make it a global thing) Why waste time on a single coat, when your client can have their base coat done perfectly like this, and then spend the rest of the time on nail art and embellishments? I see nobody losing work over this, on the contrary, they'll have more time for more clients :) This could change nail salons on a global scale forever.

    • @rebeccamiller3248
      @rebeccamiller3248 3 года назад +62

      Nail techs keep talking about artistic talent. That's great glad you think that. The problem is a computer can scan and print a picture flawlessly. If it can do it on paper do you not think it can be done on a finger nail? If it can do it with ink do you think it could do precision work with nail polish? I get told it cant replace human knowledge or touch or sight. Have you ever heard of laser scanning? Lasers can scan retinas or used to perform eye surgery with little to no pain. If they can do that with an eye that's probably one of the most delicate organs we have do you not think it can read a nail or nail bed? Remove cuticles? Clean and file faster than a human? I dont want to see people lose work but reality says this is the first step to replacing people in nail salons let alone nail salons to begin with. A machine does not need a paycheck. A machine does not need benefits. A machine does not need days off. A machine can work 24/7. As much as I want to be wrong about this my gut says machines like this can and will end nail Salons. If they can do nails they can do pedicures too. From there it's a slow roll toward other service industries. Japan has already started that route.

She is seeking another part time job to make ends meet now. Top it off her husband lost his job when they automated his warehouse job.
      You said decals but I am not talking about decals. I am talking about a machine being able to literally put any art you can get down to minuscule or literally a thumb nail picture and be able to print or paint it on a nail. Then be able to replicate it on other nails. That type of thing wouldput people out of work fast. As far as bringing it out. I said this before if you have a machine doing all the base work you would pretty much only need 1 or 2 persons to add the bling. Basically the nail tech would be there to run the machine. The machine again doesnt need a paycheck, benefits, breaks or days off. A machine frees up overhead costs one of which would be the need for multiple techs. How many nail techs are in a salon on any shift? My area there are 6 techs in the largest one or were last time I went before I paid my neighbor. Put a machine that can precisely read a nail, clean cuticles, file, paint n print what ever is scanned in the customer wants how many people are you going to need to bling that nail out? Especially since machines doing most of the work and costs less than if a person was doing it. Blinging it out would be an extra charge on the customer. But if the machine can give the exact design repeated uniformally or as requested would the customer need bling? Nail and other salons are already suffering from this recession and we are not likely to see relief from recession anytime soon. Every person ever replaced by a machine from auto factories to office mailroom carriers to warehouse workers to cashiers felt their jobs were jobs only people could do only to get their jobs taken by a machine. I really really want to be wrong. I dont want anyone out of a job. I know what losing a job does.
      My daughter and SIL lost their business because of COVID, they lost their home and transportation and have had to move in with me. Because self employed they were not eligible for unemployment pay. They have been busting their butts on side jobs, putting out applications and trying to sort out transport because we literally live out in BFE. I dont drive I use a shuttle service. Nearest places to get hired are a 3 to 10 mile walk depending if you walk on roadside or take dirt roads.. Most of those are conveince stores. My self I am on a fixed income so I got the financial strain of supporting 4 adults.

    I see the very plausible comments about these machines becoming more advanced and replacing nail techs; doing everything current nail techs do. I would hope that if that is the case, nail fashion would simply evolve to where all the things a machine can do are now boring, so the fashion changes to things that can’t be done by a machine or would be cost prohibitive by a machine. Nail art made by humans may be pretty different, but hopefully people would be bored enough with the machine stuff to want it done by real people.

Similarly, the lack of top coat means that the nail polish will last like a day for most people. Plus, it will take longe to get touch dry even if they do use a drying accelerator. These nail places better step up! But like she said this is great for the fast food version of nails. Love it!

    Why? Going all the way to the salon just to PAINT your nails? You can do it at home, for 10$ you can buy at least 2 good nail polishes, they will last you at least 6 months... And this thing cannot even replace the real manicure ladies, it's has such a limited circle of actions. For the love of God... what's next, no human jobs at all? Well this world is becoming really messed up.

    I think it's really cool! I'm someone who loves doing my own nails for fun, but a lot of my friends are lazy to do it, so if perfected this would be a nice affordable niche for them to start getting into manicures. The idea of not using a top and base coat irks me a bit though lol. And agree it doesn't replace salons, this robot only gives the most basic mani that most people usually do on their own anyway. Good for a $10 job.

      Lazy? Lol. Not everyone is good at doing nails. It's tedious. That doesn't make them lazy.

    This is awesome! My daughter does some pretty fantastic nail art, and this would save her so much time on the base coat. I’m big into cnc machines and 3d printing, so this is right up my alley to help her get it up and running once they are available for a decent price. Cool product, and a great use of technology!

    Now, there should be something for nail techs to learn how to use this machine to their benefit and help small business. Maybe by getting the easier jobs out of the way, reducing the cost of easy paint jobs and getting more appointments, while upselling more specialty work. I'm not scared for nail techs, they're often very good at sales! I can see them using this to speedup their process just as they used fans and gel+Led lights to speed up the drying process.
    The only thing I'm scared about is a large corporation with franchises using this to keep small businesses in the dust, as they can buy more of these in bulk for less and distribute them all over the country, and a small business owner would maybe buy one or two and the unit price would be significantly higher and thus setting their profit margins behind.

    Robot or not, why should I pay money to have my nails painted? It’s even basic nail polish, so I still have to wait 20 minutes afterwards to let it dry, and it doesn’t look like they do any cool designs, just color. I can let my little sister do that for free any day. But I guess they are still in the developing phase and more features will come.
