  • This is an introduction video of some of my laserdisc video games in the gaming garage, This video covers two laserdisc games Dragons Lair / Space Ace that got me into collecting arcade machines.
    This machine is the first arcade machine I bought when I was 16 years old, this machine broke down and remained broken for many years until I became interested in video arcade games again.
    The Space Ace was originally a Dragons Lair II... I found out that there was a Dragons Lair II conversion kit that changers the game to a Space Ace 91, this conversion kit is very rare.

    I find it fascinating that there is a little handheld replica of Dragon's Lair. Such a tiny replica would have been impossible to do until well into the 21st Century because only in recent years could you have full-motion video stored on solid state memory chips and display it on a tiny LCD screen. Back in the day, you could only do it with a laser disc player and full-sized monitor that fit inside an arcade cabinet.

    Graphics are still the best ever.

    I remember seeing this game in the arcade for the first time as a 12 year old kid and was blown away by its graphics. Quarters where lined up to play it, an external monitor was set up on top of the cabinet so other kids could see game play. My first go at it was a complete waste of 50 cents. I had no idea what to do.
    Fast forward 6 years and my Dad had a customer that had a connection with an old arcade the had closed and he bought a Space Ace with the disc and eProms (at least that is what we capped the chips you had to swap out when you swapped discs) for Dragons Lair.
    I can't tell you how many days and nights my friends spent playing this game to beat it. We eventually got to the point were we could play thru in about 20 mins, for either game.
    I still have the game but we lost the laserdisc player 15-20 years ago to a repair man that ghosted us. Space Ace has made it to Atlanta with me and has sat in my office and now my home, idle. When friends of my age come over, they wish we could fire it up and play it.
    I tried to get it repaired locally a few years ago, but the guy said he would not touch if because it had not been turned on in so long. Something about the capacitors degrading from non use. Plus I still need a laser disc player.
    The cabinet and machine are in near mint condition. I have both discs and eProms, though some of the tines are a little bent from stupid teenagers not paying attention to how delicate these where. I really need to get it up and running again.
    Thanks for the channel, though I am a few years late coming to it.

    I was like 8 when this came out to the arcade. It was the first game I ever saw that was .50 cents a game which was pretty unheard of at the time.

      .50 cents? That is half a cent. Lucky! Around where I grew up, it was 50 cents - two quarters.
      I am curious, though, if it was half a cent, did you just put in a penny and get two credits? How did the arcade even make money?

    Dragon's lair is fantastic. Sadly it was too expensive to play. Can't imagine how cool it would be to have a cabinet at home.
    I think this is the first time I noticed that the game doesn't indicate each choice with a flash, does it?

      The doors sometimes flash, but othertimes it just guess work, in Space Ace everything flashes

      If you have played the console versions by digital leisure flash direction and action ( use sword on dragons lair is an action) hints are often enabled by default , the original arcade game does not do that.. as said space ace gives more hint feedback.

      @@giddygoon73 If I recall correctly, and I may not, I thought indicators were settable through dipswitches. They couldn't have produced multiple laserdisks for different difficulty I don't think - that would be the only way to do it. I had it running in a simulator about a decade ago, and I could swear that the difficulty could be adjusted. Not too hard to win if you ignore what is on screen and just look for clues as I recall.

    • @youhou2000youhou
      @youhou2000youhou Год назад

      @@richardwicks4190 you had to learn everything by heart, which is easier when you are 16 and take the time to code the moved on your commodore 64 so as to exercise the sequences at home before going back to the arcade, confidently park your 40km/h motorbikes, and mesmerize the crowd behind you when killing the dragon. Great days.

    yep cool video but one thing.... Laserdisc isnt a "digital" disc. Its stored as an analog video signal that is only read by a laser. There is no zeros and ones on the disc and also no digital Compression. Mpeg digital video compression first came out in 1993.

      000jimbojones000 Hi there, you are absolutely right, in fact it’s CAV analog storage... I think I just trying to simplify the process and tbf it was my first video

      That’s why I love laserdisc, it’s the pinnacle of analog video format.

    • @allrock1238
      @allrock1238 3 года назад

      the frame number of each frame are encoded digitally and read by the player ,, the player sends this data through the interface and the game board uses data stored in the games program to determine player sucess or failure actions with frame accurate timing . . of cource the game program can also command the player to select any singel frame and play from there or simply display that frame , some laser disk games have hardware that overlays computer generated graphics on top of the video from the laser disk,, M.A.C.H 3 and Firefox are examples of this kind of game play .

    • @garypranzo9334
      @garypranzo9334 2 года назад

      I was about to make this comment. It is analog but unlike tape, it is a nonlinear system so you can access different parts of the recording at any time so I can see why it would be confused with digital as a video file has that same feature.

    Good video, Bit of constructive criticism: Try to keep you video intro to 10 seconds. Not many people show the actual workings of the machines and hardware, that would be interesting. Their are lots of video's showing walkthroughs so keep your game play short.Looks like you have a lot of interesting items and would be good to see them.

    The surface of the laserdisc you are showing appears CLV because I can't see the vertical blanking which is visible on CAV disc. Is the side you are showing the game data side? or a blank side? I thought Dragon's Lair is a CAV for faster search because the spindle motor doesn't have to change speed during search and it can also go backward and forward in real-time without distortion on the video. I had never seen an actual Dragon's Liar laser disc myself so I have not idea if it's a CAV or CLV.

      I agree. I grew up in the 80s and never quite understood the draw of laserdisc games. They were neat, but to me, it wasn't really a video game, more like you memorizing when to move the joystick or hit the fire button to advance a cartoon you were watching.
