- In this ukulele tutorial I will show you how to strum like IZ on the classic Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Free Strumming Mastery Ukulele Course bit.ly/2JcoYri
The chords I'm using in this ukulele lesson are the chords from the chorus of the song and are C - G - Amin - F.
The strum pattern is based off sixteenth notes and will count 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a
The uke lesson is arranged so you can play on any ukulele, soprano, concert, or tenor, high G or low G.
Although you could play this strum pattern with your thumb and index finger, I'm going to simplify it and only use my index finger.
The pattern is D DU MUDU repeated over and over again. D = down stroke, U = up stroke, and M = mute.
Because these are 1/16 notes you will play this D DU MUDU two times per chord.
This strum pattern will sound more like brother Israel Kamakawiwoole IZ when it is played faster, you have to master it at a slow tempo and then gradually speed it up.
Also, I would suggest that you master the strum pattern on the C chord first and then add the G - A minor and F chords once you feel comfortable with it.

Soooo many tutorials never tell you about muting the one strum..... WOW. I kept saying WHY is there not more of a beat instead of a race. There was no chunkiness to it. I have watched sooo many tutorials on here and couldn't figure out why theirs sounded off. THANK YOU!!!
To get authentic strum is plucking g string and C then strum. I learned it by watching 30 mins of IZ strumming
this video helped me more than any other, but i practiced so much that now i have a giant blister on my finger :)
Haha, nice job on the dedication.
I'm just picking up the ukulele again after many years of not playing, and am so delighted to find this video. I'm still a beginner and you made it so easy to understand and get. I'm so excited to practice and play this song! Thanks :)
I started playing the ukulele a couple of days ago on a whim and it was difficult to get the pattern down from other videos. Your video is amazing and very easy to keep up with. Thank you!
Sweet dude
That's a skillful mute on beat 2 there! Also thanks for breaking it down the way you do.. I call that quality videography. The microphones and white background to eliminate distractions. Fantastic
I'm new to the uke and this has been one of my goal songs. I've almost got all of the chord transitions down but after listening to the song I couldn't quite get my strumming to sound right. I watched a couple other videos and they just didn't quite cut it. Should have looked here first. I was missing the mute! It sounds so awesome when you can get in the groove and get the timing right. I'm not consistent yet but getting there.
Thank you for the comment and the kind words. IZ has a unique way of strumming but I was hoping I captured his vibe in this video.
For everyone who is wondering I believe the the strumming pattern goes like this:
DDU DUDU
The second down strum is slightly louder and the first down strum of the second set is muted by hitting the side of your palm against the strings once you've strummed.

You are my go to on my journey into ukeleism! Love your video!
I'm a semi-beginner and this strum in particular got me stumped early on.
The song is what started me on the Ukulele journey and purchased one eventually.
But this strum got me stumped it really did even though am quite proficient guitar wise.
Just to say thank you. It gives me a chance to be able to break it down this in way.
It is quite complicated really although IZ plays and sings so naturally seems easy.
Am from New Zealand originally, used to Polynesian strumming but Hawaiian is different.
We have the garangachak it's the norm but this one in particular is very IZ and Hawaiian.
I liked it a lot but could never quite get it but did try too break it down a bit.
In the end just put it on the back burner and learned the words trying my own strum.
Sooo cool to be able to learn this, thank you again, it will be great to conquer it finally.
The best tutorial on this strumming pattern!
I think this video describes the strumming pattern a lot better than others! Thanks a lot for sharing!
This video helped me more than all other 10 channels i went to! Completed it for school on time to! thx!
Omg! Terry I just improvised a sliding gliding groove with this strum pattern! My cup runneth over with chops and pops! Stay tuned for the video! Thank you Teach! You da G Man even when you have a Uke in hand! That's what I love about my Guitarlele it's so versatile. Anyways grooving and improving. More music practice! 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾😎😎😎😎😎😎👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿JR 😎😎😎
Your welcome. G Man Nation.
You got a lot of variations from this lesson
Thank you so much. You made that so clear.
Just played along with this :) loved this video as I am interested in Hawaiian style ukelele lessons . Thanks 🙏🏻
Cool, I have a few videos coming soon that will be Hawaiian style licks that I learned from some of my Hawaiian friends the last time I was in Maui
Amazing tutorial. Thank you for this
It's an awesome tutorial, thank you, I can't do the "mute" right now, I'll train it until I be able to do it well
Amazing Tutorial! Thank you
Great tutorial! Thanks!
this was a perfect breakdown, made it so uncomplicated
Nice. Seriously, I was just about to request this on another video of yours, then I noticed it in the feedbar!
Haha, the universe works in mysterious ways. Thanks for the support.
This helped me a lot, thanks broh, subbed
Awesome. Mahalo!
Thanks! This is great! I still need practice , but sounds great!
That what I really want to learn!!!! Thanks
what is the ukulele type that you are using
yeah what kind of uke is that, it sounds great
Thank you soooo much 🙂
great lesson tnx!
Thank you
Hmmmm this gives a whole new meaning to chop! Chop! I'm gonna work on a song using this pattern! Thank you Terry! You're keeping me up again and I'm loving it! Gonna grab my guitarlele and do this Uke lesson! JR living it up in three worlds! Guitarlele,Ukulele and Guitar land! I'm a G Man!
😉😜🌅💃🏾🎼🎼🎼🎸🎸🎸🎬🎬🎬🌅🌅🌅🌅🚀🚀🚀😎😎😎😎 Mr GuitarLEE!
Your welcome. This one is key. I noticed how late or early it was for you watching this lesson. You a man on a mission, a G man in a mission.
I was taught a different strum pattern and it never sounded quite right. This is what I was missing, now back to learning all over lol. Thank you
Thank you for the explanation of this beautiful song .
I am looking for a little higher end ukulele , what is your opinion on the Martin IZ and a Kamala or Kanile’a for about the same price
Thanks
dude thanks to you I can play my moms favorite song to her on my own ukulele!
That's awesome! Thank you for watching :)
Please how do i tune my ukulele for this song
Very nice. Can you tell me what type of strings you are using?
Hi sirz what brand is your uku? and where to purchase it?
You make going to G look so easy, how do you it ?
It sounds to me though (as shown in another video on RUclips) that Iz was actually starting each measure with a single plucked fourth string on the downbeat, followed by this strum pattern.
yeah that is what I found as well
Can someone up simplify the strum pattern for me for example as a up an down on the strumming
Please could I ask a silly question?....... I follow you from Wales UK.... I am stuck and can't progress... My silly question is... How do I practice,?
omgsh i cannot seem to get it rightt. it sounds amazing when im playing along but i can't seem to get it by myself hahahaha
Haha, it’s a tricky rhythm but sounds great once you nail it
Does anyone know the BPM so I can practice with a metronome? Also, how is his ukalalee tuned?
This is a great video! I struggle playing it fast, but I got the rhythm and muting finally down!
Iz uses a low G tuning. And as for BPM, download any metronome app and look for a "tap" button where you just tap along with the song you're listening to and it'll give you the BPM. Have fun!
I would love to know which low g strings he is using so I can purchase them.
IZ in a g string. That I’d pay to see.
The mute is a struggle for me
For me to, I just can t do it
Just keep practicing you guys will get it for sure!
You also don't have to use that specific part of your hand. It's hard for me to use the side of my hand AND strum, so i end up using the heel of my hand or sometimes even my forearm to mute the strings a bit farther down the fretboard. :D
How do i mute it
What strings do you have ?
I have the strings that came from the KoAloha factory, but I'm playing with a Low G which gives it a bit more bass sound.
Very wonderful! Thank you!
@@Ukelikethepros Do you mean that the G string is tuned down one octave? I've tried that but then the string is too lose and seems to go out of tune right away. Did you use a special string for that? Thanks!
@@nyulagr tuning down the string an octave doesn't really work. There are special low g strings for that. You can buy a set of strings and it will say low G on the package. Or just a single low G string if you want :)
This is a nice pattern, but I'm pretty sure IZ started his strum on the 1/2 beat.
Trying to mute it is the hardest thing I've ever done boutta make me sell my uke
Looks easy... but after 3 hours and bleeding hand and get it one time the right pattern 😢
Man, if you can't do the actual strumming, what hope do I have?
You got this.
This is HARD
Agree, but you can get it
i'll never get an upchuck mostly because I strum weird smh
DDUmDUDU
Any body else incapable of striking this pattern?
Thats not rally how he does it. This is the simplified version
Yeah you didnt do it the same at all.😂😂🤣🤣
your video is terrible because you added some kind of reverb to it, it sounds muddy as hell
