  • In this ukulele tutorial I will show you how to strum like IZ on the classic Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Free Strumming Mastery Ukulele Course bit.ly/2JcoYri
The chords I'm using in this ukulele lesson are the chords from the chorus of the song and are C - G - Amin - F.
    The strum pattern is based off sixteenth notes and will count 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a
The uke lesson is arranged so you can play on any ukulele, soprano, concert, or tenor, high G or low G.
Although you could play this strum pattern with your thumb and index finger, I'm going to simplify it and only use my index finger.
The pattern is D DU MUDU repeated over and over again. D = down stroke, U = up stroke, and M = mute.
Because these are 1/16 notes you will play this D DU MUDU two times per chord.
This strum pattern will sound more like brother Israel Kamakawiwoole IZ when it is played faster, you have to master it at a slow tempo and then gradually speed it up.
Also, I would suggest that you master the strum pattern on the C chord first and then add the G - A minor and F chords once you feel comfortable with it.
Quote of the day, "The way you do one thing is the way you do everything."

Soooo many tutorials never tell you about muting the one strum..... WOW. I kept saying WHY is there not more of a beat instead of a race. There was no chunkiness to it. I have watched sooo many tutorials on here and couldn't figure out why theirs sounded off. THANK YOU!!!

To get authentic strum is plucking g string and C then strum. I learned it by watching 30 mins of IZ strumming

That's a skillful mute on beat 2 there! Also thanks for breaking it down the way you do.. I call that quality videography. The microphones and white background to eliminate distractions. Fantastic

I'm new to the uke and this has been one of my goal songs. I've almost got all of the chord transitions down but after listening to the song I couldn't quite get my strumming to sound right. I watched a couple other videos and they just didn't quite cut it. Should have looked here first. I was missing the mute! It sounds so awesome when you can get in the groove and get the timing right. I'm not consistent yet but getting there.

Thank you for the comment and the kind words. IZ has a unique way of strumming but I was hoping I captured his vibe in this video.

For everyone who is wondering I believe the the strumming pattern goes like this:
    DDU DUDU
The second down strum is slightly louder and the first down strum of the second set is muted by hitting the side of your palm against the strings once you've strummed.

I'm a semi-beginner and this strum in particular got me stumped early on.
The song is what started me on the Ukulele journey and purchased one eventually.
But this strum got me stumped it really did even though am quite proficient guitar wise.
Just to say thank you. It gives me a chance to be able to break it down this in way.
It is quite complicated really although IZ plays and sings so naturally seems easy.
Am from New Zealand originally, used to Polynesian strumming but Hawaiian is different.
We have the garangachak it's the norm but this one in particular is very IZ and Hawaiian.
I liked it a lot but could never quite get it but did try too break it down a bit.
In the end just put it on the back burner and learned the words trying my own strum.
Sooo cool to be able to learn this, thank you again, it will be great to conquer it finally.

    • @itcangetbetter

Iz uses a low G tuning. And as for BPM, download any metronome app and look for a "tap" button where you just tap along with the song you're listening to and it'll give you the BPM. Have fun!

You also don't have to use that specific part of your hand. It's hard for me to use the side of my hand AND strum, so i end up using the heel of my hand or sometimes even my forearm to mute the strings a bit farther down the fretboard. :D
