Try them out, this is NOT a typical hummingbird so you could try 20 and not get one that sounds this good! Great guitars but like most gibsons, very inconsistent. I will say, the early 60s ones tend to be the best sounding to my ears from my personal experience
Totally agree! Gibsons are very inconsistent in sound and build quality. I tried at least 10 hummingbirds (brandnew, used, vintage ones) until I found my personal grail. It was actually a brand new 1960 historic collection. Absolutely incredible instrument!
There are 100% some winners and you gotta see for yourself! Sounds like you found a guitar for life! Thank you for watching brother and please subscribe and join the madness 🙌
Wow the top end has a really sweet chim! A lot of hummingbirds have an intentional flat top end. Which is not a bad thing. It’s like a tasteful natural compression. If miked correctly they don’t need much tweaking in the studio. This one sounds very unique. I think that saddle basically made it a new guitar.
100%. The bridge makes it so much more resonant and because it was beat to shit its much less stable so the thing positively could vibrates your arm. It also helps when a guitar has 50 years to have the wood open up. It is a crazy difference when you play something like this next to a new one, especially in volume. This one has a presence you absolutely don't find on a lot these. Theyre usually woody and warm but good ears, this one has a distinct sparkle you don't get out of a lot of gibsons. You put one good mic on it and leave it alone. Maybe some verb and call it a day 🤘🤘
I have a 64 that I inherited from my grandad. It has a little bit of honest wear (mainly the typical little hairline cracks in the nitro), but it's nearly still new. I'll probably add some wear as I play it as well, but it's unreal how good it sounds. Probably my most prized possession.
So interesting you say that. I bought a walden dreadnought and there were two there, and I bought the one that had a bruise at the bottom because it sounded so much better! And I got it cheaper
@@tristanjensen1886 whatever one's you dig! Trial and error, pending how you play, how much resistance you want, and the type of sound you dig, like anything, it's a constant quest for tone
Personally, I'd much rather a guitar with lots of honest wear verses a pristine example. Don't get me wrong, I love a brand new guitar as much as anyone, but for practicality you'll never go wrong with a well played guitar (acoustic or solid body), IMHO. Great Hummingbird, a real keeper for sure.
10000% the thing better than relicd guitars are just vintage, played guitars. So many people ask me if buying used is as good as buying new and I always say it's better, unless you're buying recording equipment and even then. It's usually better lol
They are beautiful guitars 😎. But every one I ever played was just to soft sounding for me. Good tone but not enough volume and power. Now that particular one sounds pretty strong!
I'm telling ya, the cracks! The less sturdy they are the more resonant they become. Hyde glue crystallizes and breaks up which is why a lot of people attribute many vintage instruments to sound so good
This is the 4th guy I seen who own a 64…..I’m the only one in Newfoundland with one…I bought it in Toronto in 1981 ….and yes I thought I over payed…but it was the best investment I done…

@@TheNeuroticGuitarist thanks for all the encouragement. I bought a vintage 1971 guild dreadnought. @@tristanjensen1886 it's actually more usual for an older guitar, acoustics in particular, to sound better because the wood has a chance to open up which is why you have 19th century parlors that sound louder than some modern jumbos
@@TheNeuroticGuitarist Well, it sounds very much like an old school early 60's Hummingbird does. Records beautifully. Has had a hard life too, some cracks here and there in the top and back, which have been fixed. Also got a new bridge. The sunburst has faded completely. Just a lovely instrument! Like to record it with "lesser" mics, just to emphasize the earthy old school idea of what an acoustic guitar sound like.

That voice reminds me of some Keef's Hummingbirds. Really dreamy tone. Definitely my next guitar after the J-45!

Sounds amazing, almost has a J-200 vibe! I seem to recall that some of the early 60s Hummimgbirds were made with maple.
