Just one pretty big correction for 3:29. Shonda Rhimes isn’t a casting director, she’s one of the biggest television creators, executive producers, and writers around.
On my first date with my now wife, we went and played pool and other stuff. About 15 minutes into it, I started a Scottish accent to be ridiculous and just did it the entire night. She was cracking up but after a few hours I couldn’t get back to my normal accent for a bit. 😅
Why? Because male directors were objectifying women from the get-go and like Sally said, it took society a long while to catch up. He lacked eloquence in his questioning but I love that he's asking it.
Yes - and meanwhile the female objectification of men as status objects and financial plow horses goes uncontested unless you look at American Beauty and 50 shades , magic mike - no one is saying that it’s right - the difference is men don’t whinge about it
There was also an idea culturally that penises were more vulgar somehow as well. Why, idk. I guess because women weren't allowed to look and enjoy the way men were. Either way, it's all comes back to misogyny and a "boys will be boys" attitude.
Lol!!! Sally Field gently answering "societal issues"... hilarious. I'm under no delusions that Chris Pine isn't intelligent enough to know why, and I appreciate him wanting to bring this up.
I'd say Chris Pines' second theory is more accurate, as a man. It's never my expectation. It's a social double-standard, if not before, then it is currently. My female friends can say a lot of those Tweets, which men cannot the other way around in public situations without ire. I feel kind of bad for Chris Pine here. He never gets serious and this, the very first time he has brought up a social issue and look what happened. He's shot down before his senten- ... it was a bit condescending in the least. If you go back he was interrupted three times in a row. She literally forbid this man being allowed to be unhappy, or to even communicate his concerns without having met him before. He questioned her on her points, and she doubled down on patronizing.
@@seanthomas5182 In the past I think it was acceptable to focus on a woman's attributes over her performance. A lot of the talk show interviews of the 90's consisted in the host talking about how "great" the woman being interviewed looked, whereas now that same kind of behaviour comes across as being a bit creepy. But men haven't historically been treated in the same way, and male nudity isn't common either. So there is both the aspect of social novelty and a lack of established convention for talking about men's bodies, and what is and isn't acceptable.

@@johannebaker9730 Best thing about Fiennes full frontal is we see him in his late 20s/early 30s, late 30s (Red Dragon), and in his 50s. Ralph getting naked in A Bigger Splash in his 50s is quite the sight to behold. In Red Dragon, the director had a few inches digitally removed so as not to distract viewers. Me. Fiennes is blessed.
Harry Belafonte in Buck and the Preacher has a nudity scene by the lake. So funny! Men don't usually have inhibitions about their nudity in general; it is just a Hollywood thing to ensure they are not offending the audience. They could care less; they naturally love to be shirtless and bottomless. As always, I say, hold on to your pants and make us wonder! 🙏 Rjpayne
As for Chris Pine's question about why people comment on male nudity and not female- it's because female nudity has become so common place. You virtually never see a nude male unless you are watching porn. So yes, people will comment. I agree with Sally- it's an issue that it's expected of women but not men.
@@paulbrut I hear your sarcasm, but you know women are also watching these movies. I'm not thrilled by the copious amounts of naked women parading around on the screen while the men are fully dress or covered. It's BS. Either both naked or no naked. Make it fair.
Sally Field didn't really answer Chris' question. Men baring more now is still rare. I don't think it's the double standard Chris is after -> this is not a tragedy. Men have gotten to focus more on the acting. A lot of female parts were supporting players and had to show skin because that's what the men in charge and the men in the theatres wanted to see. Certainly there are legitimate cases where it makes sense to show skin for the story. But there are a lot of gratuitous scenes where actresses had to be nude. There were a lot of male executives, directors and writers who are telling their story they wanted it told.
True and also the fact that women have always been more sexualized. Men I think are more perverted, I think most women don't need to see men naked as much but me being a fan of Chris, it was surprising to see but again, not something I need to stay interested in watching him. I love hearing him speak more so. He is so intelligent, charming, and talented 🥰 I won't speak for all women but I think we're more interested or attracted to words, personality, and emotions we feel.
I think he was addressing that he understood why women were naked all the time, but he wanted to understand why men weren't also, more as a rhetorical question to encourage considering the topic than actually a question for which he desired an answer.
@@HeathsHarleyQuinn I respectfully disagree. Was it rhetorical if he kept pressing Sally Field for an answer? I think he thought he was being somewhat progressive by suggesting we shouldn't be so loose with making fun of men being naked while being "respectful" with actresses who get naked.

Chris wasn't just dumb and asking why, it was just a way of speech, that's how someone respectful would approach the issue in a talk show, he didn't want to be condescending or mansplain it, he just wanted to bring it to people's attention, saying it's worth considering and discussing the why, that it reflects a deeper issue. It was a total misunderstanding, and I think Sally was a bit too sensitive to these subjects to pause and think about why Chris is saying it like so, therefore appearing rude or condescending (I say that without any ill will, it was an honest mistake, and I think Sally is wonderful. Also, Chris took no offense, might I add, shows what a true gentleman he is.) I understood the question to be rhetorical instantly, because that how I think and what I would say to convey the sentiment. Also it's ridiculous to think he really didn't know why, Hollywood has been forcing woke and politically correctness for a while, do you really think a seasoned and media trained actor like him wouldn't know about the issues that are been raised and discussed everywhere? That isn't even to say I personally do think he's respectful, intelligent, and a gentleman to boot. Sorry for the essay, if anyone even reads this.
