Creating Subtle Variations of Color And Value In Your Landscape Painting

  • When we're ready to finish our painting, that's when we add the subtle variations of color and value. Value changes are detail so we have to be careful with that, but color variations create interest and color vibration.

    Yes, Phil that broken color variation, particularly in snow scenes, like you showed is very important since snow is not just white. If you see that in a gallery painting you know the painting was done solely from photo reference rather than a plein air field sketch, for example. And of course, Edgar Payne was a master at using it in all his mountain paintings. Very nice video on a vital part of paintings.

    Thanks for putting in simple terms how to do what sometimes seems like an impossibly complicated task of adding variation to large sections of the picture.
