  • Sometimes you just need to go for it and start painting. You don't need to have it all worked out, as long as you have a direction you want to go in.

Lewis Noble has lived and worked in Derbyshire since 1996. His focus lies in the physical and emotional impact of the landscape on the senses and the effect this experience has on us.
His paintings are not snapshots or photographic frozen moments but through repeated layering and eroding of the painted surface, they contain all of the time it takes to make them.
The result is a body of work that speaks to the heart of what it means to be part of the environment.

Glad we actually got to see what you do in your process. It fills in the gap between the sketches and finished paintings. Hope to see more of this.

Thanks for sharing how you start these large pieces. I noticed you don't gesso the canvas before you start painting - what's your take on when/when not to use gesso? Thanks!

If your canvas comes painted white, it already has gesso on it. Unprimed canvas is tan/off white. No need to do it again

Great video. I have a question, if you get to read this comment: do you prefer working on primed or unprimed canvases? In your previous video, the one about stretching you used an unprimed canvas. What is the benefit/advantage for using unprimed versus primed? Is it the soft beige look, instead of the starch white surface or just the cost?

It's not a pegboard, I mounted large sheets of MDF to the wall. (& screws)
