Yea, Fanny!!!! Please, please help spread the word about these REAL PIONEERS!!!! The first all female rock band to cut albums for a major label. The reason you can say now that nothing matters to these young female bands but the passion about the music, is because Fanny BLAZED THEIR TRAIL! Female rockers were not taken seriously until Fanny showed people that women could REALLY ROCK! Thanks for this reaction!
Fanny was the first really hard rocking girl group. Gotta' give them great respect for being true to themselves and avoiding the girl group stereotype. They blazed the trail for performers like Heart, The Bangles and The Runaways.
Sebs, you're welcome for the donation, and thank you for checking into Fanny. I had 3 of their albums in the mid 70s. "Fanny", "Fanny Hill", and "Charity Ball". This was a cover. They did a few covers and had some originals as well. Jean had a stroke a few years ago. She is now able to sing but I think her bass days are over. June has a channel and is still playing some sick guitar. Last I heard, (a few years ago), Nicky, (keyboards), slipped away to Australia and disappeared from the American scene. Alice is an absolute beast on the drums. (I had such a crush on her in the day) Thanks again and I hope you and yours had a Blessed Christmas.
The sisters are in their early seventies.. June and her partner established the Institute for the musical arts IMA to teach young girls the playing and recording aspects of the music industry at her Farm in Massachusetts. They are the pioneers. There are some interviews documented on RUclips with each of them individually. Thank you so much for bringing attention to them. The "og's" don't always get recognition or respect. I wish you and your family a blessed New Year👍🔥💕
@@crowredeye8066 For me, it was 75. In the military, drive from home to 'duty station' was about 4hrs. "The Best of the Guess Who", "Tommy James and the Shondels", "Fanny" and "Fanny Hill" got me there and back a few times.
@@Ken-h5d Im 76 USMC 68-72 always listened to the same swooping home on weekends from MCAS Cherry Pt to home on Long Island NY When I was in bootcamp we got a real special surpeise the TV show Operation entertainment came to PI headlined by Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels MCed by Tim Conway
There's an amazing documentary about Fanny entitled "Fanny, the right to rock". They struggled against the misogyny of the rock music world and also the racism of the world at large, being mixed race white/Filipina. One of the lines I remember from the doc was something like that one reason they stopped performing was to have kids (which you never hear white men in rock bands say, except perhaps John Lennon). Fans and friends/roommates of theirs included Bonnie Raitt and David Bowie. I highly recommend seeing the documentary.
I was born in 1956 and grew up through the most glorious time in music recording (at least, in my opinion). I had never heard of Fanny, and that is one of the reasons that I tuned into this video. I was not disappointed. One of my favorite bands is Allman Brothers, particularly because of Duane and his mastery of the slider. It was nice to see it being utilized in this video.
me either, but I approve...It is a cover of "Ain't That Peculiar", a 1965 song recorded by the American soul musician Marvin Gaye for the Tamla (Motown) label. Cool
The Beat-Club RUclips channel used to have the entire 35-minute set of this as one video, but I think they still have each song as a playlist. Jean (on bass) and especially Nickey (keyboards) have killer vocals. It's well worth checking out.
Oh WOW, Fanny. Yeah they were very good but never really got the recognition they deserved. They have so many good songs. Check out knock on my door. The live version. Their live versions were really good.
Wow, first YT reactor checking out Fanny! I first heard of them a couple years ago when I saw a video clip (from this session) going around Facebook. I thought they freakin rocked. I then did a little deeper dive and found the leads were sisters and of Filipino descent, and that just made it sweeter. Pinoy pride!
Fanny, 1st Female Rock Band to Tour Extensively and with Albums(4) on a major label, 1970-73(Reprise Records). They wrote their own music too, like “Place in the Country” ruclips.net/video/QkVYnVAEMIU/видео.html and "Charity Ball". The band name is to denote the female spirit. Classic lineup June Millington - lead vocals/lead guitar; Jean Millington - lead vocals, bass; Nickey Barclay - lead vocals, keys; Alice de Buhr-drums, vocals. Keyboard player has a great voice also. I picked up their CD 'Live On Beat-Club '71-'72 this year. Awesome.
a mix of Janis Joplin and Hendrix youve got to hear more and their still making music You aint heard nothing yet Try Young and Dumb its a banger and the bass player sounds just like Janis
I have always been a huge fan of the slide guitar. This song was already great.... then came the slide guitar. I'm in heaven now. I don't know the back story of these talented musicians. It can often take more than talent to make it "big" in this business. I'm going to do some research on these talented young musicians. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Take care...
I saw Fanny at Cleveland Public hall June 21st 1971 I was 14 years old. I am now 68 years old... Fanny, Redbone, Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, and Steppenwolf. It was my first concert!
Great discovery!!!! Alice the drummer runs the website. She will actually reply back to comments and give notes if you buy from thier site..cool lady..great group..
Good job getting a Beat Club video posted; they often lawyer up against YT channels. Fanny was the first all-female rock band to break through, then basically none until the '80s.
There is a documentary about their band.Struggles of being an all girl band in the 70's. Their European tour. And the meaning of their band name(Fanny) in England.
IMHO the best forgotten band of all time They used to open for Zep in the early 70s. Best club videos are usually blocked. Another great female basnd form that era is Birtha great song henpecked man
My first time hearing of them. We had music going all the time. But my mom or brothers had control over what was played. lol But I always check in on yal s reactions first. Yal are my comfort zone.
I remember the song well even though this cool video is different from the record. Loved this live version and will watch it later without Sebs interruptions. 😂😂 Thanks dude!
I was late coming to Fanny, so glad you got to hear them. Here's another artist I was late discovering. (Sixto) Rodriguez, the song Sugar Man, or A Most Disgusting Song. Think you'd get a kick out of either one.
Check OUT "BLIND Alley." I grew up in this era and I had never heard of this incredible band until I saw one of their videos on here. There is a good documentary out about them CALLED "Fanny the Right to Rock." They should have hit the big time, but it didn't happen for them. They were one of the first all-female rock groups to achieve critical and commercial success, including two Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 singles.
Speaking of top women talent... Has anyone suggested you listen to Joni Mitchell? She's the best, and most unique, singer songwriter of 1966 -2010, and is still around at 81. Earliest work is light-hearted youthful hits mostly upbeat, personal observations of life and thoughtfully creative, but her album "Blue" (1971) is arguably her most serious and best collection of mature solid hits ( A Case Of You, River, Blue, California, Carey.) Her first hit "Both Sides Now" was carried as a live performance broadcast by a radio station in Philadelphia in 1966 and immediately covered by recording artist Judy Collins who made the song famous in 1967. Joni recorded it herself in '68 (and later did a more mature and melancholy version in 2000.) She was then discovered by David Crosby, often played with CSN, James Taylor, and later with many top jazz musicians in a decidedly jazz/blues vein. She is known for inventing unique guitar tunings for her songs to complement her voice. She is a top talent up there with Dylan, McCartney, Parton, you name it. Since it is Christmas Season, I suggest starting with River from the album Blue. I have no money to offer on patreon at the moment but I will hopefully. I discovered your reactions a week ago and am a huge fan. You are so authentic, open, and relatable to this old boomer. You would have been right at home in my generation. Love you and your beautiful family.
SO good to re-listen to "girl" bands from my youth. Women still have a heck of a time in music - it's OK to be a singer, but not to play an instrument. These gals had it all, and David Bowie was right - they were too ahead of their time.
I love Fanny! I don’t think I’ve never seen a reaction to this, though. The band is awesome but I understand why they didn’t really make it big in the UK: it’s got to be the name. Fanny is a slang term for vagina in the UK. It’s like modern band calling themselves Pussy or something; they’re not going to be taken seriously or some DJs and TV shows just won’t want to have to say their name on air. It’s a silly thing but it makes a big difference to a lot of people. Such a shame, though. They were so good!
They're aces - 4 aces. Hear (sic) is the same performance with a full minute restored at the end. ruclips.net/video/tjO77AAoCWA/видео.htmlsi=oMCzZgCYFwji-SzM
When you talk about a style of guitar playing you call it "slider". I think I'm correct in saying that is wrong. A slider can be a small sandwich or a large glass patio door that rides on runners to open. I have once or twice heard it refer to a baseball play, but never concerning music. You can say "slide guitar " or "playing slide" or even "bottleneck guitar ". I hope this aids in your journey in musical discovery.

I saw them live, they were great! Hey, Bulldog is another good one by Fanny.
I'm jealous. Their 8 track tapes were constantly playing while I drove, but they had quit touring by the time I got into them.
@Ken-h5d lol, 8 track is right! I think it was in 70 or 71, probably 71. In the 5 dollar max ticket price days.
