The producers have said that Defying Gravity was one of the primary reasons they decided to split the film into 2 parts. They said something to the effect of they could not diminish the impact of that moment at the end of the first act. They also rightly believed they could not tell the story of Wicked and do it justice in the constraint of one movie. Splitting it into 2 parts was absolutely the right call.

They’re adding some of the book. It’s another part of the reason there will be two films. So yes, some things might be different.
