The slope gives you more colors. A northward rise makes a darker shade and a southward rise makes a lighter shade. That gives you 3 times more colors, at the cost of a much higher building effort.

my map art is still bigger, than the first one, the 2nd one is only 4.1m blocks, but I guess you counted all the stairs OK time to look for something huge
