  • Greg Norman led all four of the majors after 54 holes in 1986, a feat dubbed the “Saturday Slam”. But the only one he actually won was The Open at Turnberry.
    Amid all the frustration of near-misses that had gone before, not least losing to Jack Nicklaus at the Masters earlier that year, and still to come, such as Bob Tway’s holed bunker shot at the PGA Championship a few weeks later, Norman finally secured a first major title.
    The Australian claimed the Claret Jug by five strokes from Gordon J Brand, with Bernhard Langer and Ian Woosnam in third place, Nick Faldo fifth and Seve Ballesteros tying for sixth.

    Thanks so much for posting all of these films! One small comment -- super fun to see how many ppl are using the DDH ball -- I used to play that in the 80s as a junior ha! Top stuff as always -- much thanks!

      Probably not DDH. Yes, Dunlop Maxfli was a popular ball then. But most of these pros were most likely playing the balata covered Maxfli HT.

    Thanks for putting these out. Always stoked when I see em in my list, and I gotta say, I LOVE the original music for all of these. It gives it an extra bit of nostalgic vibe.
    Do you guys have footage from Opens in the black and white era? 50s or earlier?
    Cheers!

    Wait, was Peter Alliss seriously carrying the entre British broadcast all by himself? He's the only commentator listed on these old highlight tapes.
    If so, that adds a whole new layer to what a legend he is in the booth.

    • @MrAJR76
      @MrAJR76 7 месяцев назад

      No. This is the official highlights video, not the real time commentary. Peter Alliss didn’t carry the whole tournament himself.

      @@MrAJR76 Thank you.
      Looking at some other films, it did seem to be a phase around this period to sprinkle in his voice along with the other narration, just because he's Peter Alliss.

    A howling wind made conditions tough for the first round - the best score was Ian Woosnam's even par 70, and 48 players shot 80 or worse.

    Great to see this coverage. And how the pro"s navigated the tough course/conditions with persimon woods and the irons, grips, balls of that era. For players to complain about the course being to tough, i take with a pinch of salt, as there is always a group that masters the conditions and into contention that week. Its the open championship, a tough weather battered game of links golf, that taxes all elements of the game. Peter allis's tones of commentary are brilliant, very easy to listen to. And no's the game. Big thanks to the open for putting this great triumph of greg norman up for us to see. Look forward to more., many thanks.

    Normans choke 3 putt to miss out for a 62 was typical of him. He was such a streaky nervous putter!

    I really appreciate all these videos. I love watching previous champions. Do you think it would be possible not to put the winners name on the title, I know it's a matter of record , but even though I am pretty old and have watched them all live, I cant remember the exact winning year of Niklaus, Trevino, Faldo etc .
    It adds to the enjoyment of the coverage if I don't look up the winner and you don't tell me beforehand. These highlights and final rounds are all long videos. Was this the year Norman won it or was that the year before or after ? ( if you see what i mean ).

    Am I the only one not to understand a word said by the narrator (not Peter Alliss, of course...)?

    All time leading money winner for a decade & the PGA TOUR screwed him over 😑 what a great golfer & person as well, he was the best player in the world for 331 weeks, Second to Tiger woods ALL-Time, Greg Norman is one of the best golfers to ever play the game & we all used to love watching him play 🤷‍♂️

    Bar code jumper 😂. Norman was a great golfer but sacrificed the Majors for money, he may well be worth 2 or 300 million, however, he will always only ever have 2 Majors, which for a golfer of his skill and ability is a paltry effort.

    • @trulymeparker
      @trulymeparker Год назад

      He won a heap of tournaments in Australia and Japan, could have won PGA Championship in 86 and 93, Masters at least 4 times in 86, 87, 96 and 1999. Could have won the US Open twice. He held a commanding lead in the '96 Masters and had a disaster 78 on the last round basically choked. If Norman never suffered any of these ill fates, he could have won 8 majors
