- Paul Vario was a mafioso, a capo, and later the consigliere of the Lucchese crime family. He also has the distinction of being Henry Hill’s teacher/father figure on the mobster way of life. A fictional character played by actor Paul Sorvino based on Vario was featured in the film Goodfellas..

Speaking of that, I was thinking; why the hell would Karen Hill want to screw Paul Vario? Henry was no prize, but he was sure a lot better looking than that fat, bald sweaty slob!

Ironic that a mobster so concerned with privacy and keeping a low profile would end up as a key character in the definitive book and movie about the New York mob.
Lol if he somehow had a glimpse into the future he would’ve wacked Jimmy, Henry and Tommy in a heartbeat LOL
@@themack1363 so true!
Thats far from the definitive book on the NY mob, movie yeah I agree 👍
He came up during a time when, the Italian Mafia wasn't quite yet "glorified" as it was by the 1970's. Big Paul was born in the early-mid 1900's, so it makes sense that, a whole lot wasn't found, said or spoken ABOUT him....however, what people did know about him, was that he was an important figure to the mafia.
Like he had a choice
Paul Sorvino sure did him justice, didn't he? The real Paulie looked like someone that stalked women in a van. Maybe he just took bad pictures. Because the guy was powerful as hell.

In a documentary on Hill, an FBI agent stated that Vario literally exuded a vibe of menace; more than any mobster he'd ever met.
I saw that video, and the picture they showed of him was just chilling.
@@wrestleguy24Sounds interesting, any chance you could send me a link?
I can see why Hill's wife would go for a handsome guy like Vario. Quite the catch. Nice going Karen...
he was a "big" man ...
He was ugly. They all were in real life. Even in the movie Ray and Bob were the only good looking ones.
Women tend to go for social status rather than looks.
His power made him attractive. Lookup Phyllis McGuire and Sam Giancana...who also banged Marilyn Monroe.
I bet Paulie didn't pull out.

+Joshua Morris> But Vincent Gigante was real. Vario's family, The Luccheses and Gigante's family, The Genoveses were allies against John Gotti's Gambinos after the hit on Big Paulie Castellano. They may have communicated by smoke signals!
Paulie was smart.
Its kind of funny how these guys are treated like lovable rogues, yet all their thievery probably drove prices for goods and services through the roof
Allot of it was based on credit card fraud before they built jfk airport
Be a little more worried they're were violent psychopaths.
Yes people think they were great men but I bet if those kind of people were on the receiving end of the mob they wouldn't think they were so great, any person with a shread of morality knows these people were scum of the earth.
They weren't treated as lovable rogues irl, I never heard anyone other than a mob associates speak highly of the man. And all the businesses he shook down in his part of town sure as hell didn't view him in that light.
Henry Hill had a long life considering the psychopaths he was associated with.
I find it difficult to believe that Henry claims to have not killed anyone as I don't think Paul Vario, Tommy De Simone and Jimmy Burke would have had Henry so closely associated with them and witnessing their various murders without Henry being required to do a killing in their presence.
But then Henry was was smarter than many give him credit for to omit certain facts to the FBI while ratting out his buddies but giving them enough to get in the witness protection program.
Hill was a low-level mob associate, his only responsibility was to earn. You think Morrie ever whacked anybody?
Dennis McClain hes a pathological liar
Deep Kumar B S u don’t want to mention anything u weren’t already convicted for
Henry was full of shit about a lot of things. Guy was a complete mess for the rest of his life too.
Hill wasn't as close to these guys as the movie described. He was more of a follower. Hill made his bones with the 1967 air France robbery, which netted somewhere in the neighborhood of $500,000
when I learned that the real paulie was sleeping with hill's wife it almost ruined the film's character for me. that's just low down and dishonorable.
Not really, goes back to Rome and the Emporer. If the Emperor came to your house and had eyes for your Wife he could sleep with her if he wanted to. Logic is this, Caesar was above all to all! Loyalty had to be earned for Political Favors and this is one of many ways. Ambitious Men would do anything to get power plus he was Caesar, he gets what he wants..Simple!
If they had any honor they wouldn't be racketeers in the first place, though.
Remember Henry had women he was sleeping with as well even set them up with apartments ect. Nobody in that life is innocent.

Very good review of Paul Vario. Some internet stories have old timers saying that Henry Hill was disrespected by Vario and Tommy DeSimonne and now I know the story. Hollywood took a brilliant nice guy actor Ray Liotta, good looking guy, to play Henry as this “cool dude” but he was not at all that way. He was even as good looking as Ray Liotta. Henry was an ordI Ray looking guy who had great survival instincts and knew when his time was over in the mob. He also knew Paulie Vario and Tommy DeSimmone were not his friends.
Goodfellas holds a special place in my heart because of the presence and relationship between rob de Niro and Ray. They portrayed as much realism as they could to create a masterpiece. Typically America wanted to show these guys actually better than they was. Karen needed money, so a low profile affair took place, Henry couldn’t argue especially cheating himself, he also needed the financial backing and when he didn’t get enough from his own crew he got hooked on making profit from drugs. In the end relying on other people got him in trouble he made a mistake and had no choice but to rat. If you listen closely it took 2 years for the main boss to be sentenced more than enough time to kill Henry. Henry had brought too much attention on himself and the crew he knew the only way was to rat having lost the trust and respect of Jimmy Burke. I really wish we knew a little more, had more images and details but Henry has brought us most of this info which we wouldn’t have had if he hadn’t have been a snitch. They’d have killed him and not battered an eye that’s how it was. Yes Karen was a slag but she did what she had to do and was also angry with Henry. Incredible insight still. Goodfellas was based on facts but much of which was improvised. Robert De Niro and Ray played they’re part so well it was brilliant.
And he wasn't .
Some know who Ray was suppose to be portraying but in reality, it was definitely not Henry lol
Goodfellas was very inaccurate on many accounts actually...
@@R0YDEME0 - Really? HOW? Hill himself said that it was like 90% accurate. It followed the book to a Tee.

Having mob guys picketing the FBI is one of the silliest things I've ever seen.
Michael Franzese, who was named in the film; Goodfellas, even though he was from a different crew, stated that Henry Hill was a lost soul.
Hill was an alcoholic, a degenerate gambler and a drug addict. Goodfellas made him look good.
I find it fascinating that no one suggested that Karen might have been coerced into the affair with Paulie. He was her husband's boss. With a snap of his fingers Henry would have been a dead man. The threat, implicit or explicit would always exist. Karen might have been terrified of saying no. Alternatively, Paulie being the boss could be extremely generous with gifts or other favors and what could Henry do? He's not going to confront Paulie, now is he?
Very well said
Nah she was just a skank at the moment
While possible there's no sign this was the case and women really are attracted to tall high status figures which Paulie certainly was. Consider tony soprano; he wasn't a looker but banged every chick he wanted because of his status (the real life cast mentioned finding him attractive sue to how well he played Tony)

I have read some of the stories about this "Paulie" character. It just blows my mind that this guy may have been one of the top criminals in the world and the FBI didn't even have his name because he was so quiet. There are subtle hints in Goodfellas actually, for example: when Paul and Jimmy go to see Henry (now staying with his lover) in order to convince him to go back to Karen, Paul says that he will have a word with Karen himself to pacify things as he "knows how to talk to her".
One wonders how and when the two got that close? 😂

P.S. What got me into the back seat of a police car in '72 was because of a B&E and arson. And that's not bullshit. Not bad for an eleven year old. Ha ha! But the law forced me to meet face to face with the owner. He was a sweet, gentle old man who forgave me and asked me to help clean up the mess. (I lit up his garage.) What a lesson I learned. He is always in my mind. As for the mob, I did know some of them when I later moved to the main land in the 80's. My older brother became friends with one of them. I met the guy.. I didn't like him at all. A JACK OFF!!

Giuseppe "The Clutch Hand" Morello, was an originating member and leader of the mafia when it was still referred to as "The Black Hand".
