It's a good list. I really liked Grandia II and was strongly considering it for a spot, but cut it because it was a Dreamcast game first add later ported to the PS2. If I ever do a list of Sega JRPG's, it would probably be a pick.
I would also like to add if anyone is using OPL to play the PS2 library there is an English patch available for the zodiac edition of Final Fantasy 12 that was only in Japan So if you wanted to play the game on original PS2 hardware you can do If you didn't want to shill out for the HD remaster
Ps2 for jrpgs was awesome. Playing kh2 for the first time when it was new still was something else and doing your first playthrough of ff10 was memorable back in the ps2 days, just to name a couple.
Thank you! I do want to finish up the Sony catalogue, so PSP and Vita videos should be coming, maybe a PS3 is I can find enough worth saying about it. Can't say exactly when, but hopefully sooner rather than later.
Happy to own every game on this list other than Ar Tonelico, though I do have Atelier Iris 1 and 3 on the PS2 and enjoyed them both a lot. Overall I think this is a great list! Star Ocean 3, Rogue Galaxy, and Radiata Stories were a few of my favorites to see here since they're all fantastic games but don't always get as much mention as others. In terms of Radiata Stories being remembered I think there are some references to it in the newest Star Ocean game, though I still need to play that. I'm not sure how my version of this list would go but I might add Valkyrie Profile 2 to it, as well as Shadow Hearts.
I am incredibly envious if you own physical copies of these games. Retro game collecting can be so pricey. I'm just grateful for emulators and digital storefronts allowing me to replay these games.
@@nerdemporium Luckily for me I was able to pick up a lot of them back at the tail end of Gamestop carrying PS2 games and I've held onto them ever since. It's the system that I'm the happiest with my collection for. If you're trying to collect retro games I hope you've got some nice retro game stores in your area, my state is not great for them.

I try not to let any one developer dominate the list, but there was no way for me to not include both Final Fantasies and at least one Kingdom Hearts. And people are still commenting about me not including Kingdom Hearts 2 and Dragon Quest 8 lol One more niche title I remember cutting when trying to narrow the list was Okage: Shadow King. There's a lot more popping up in the comments, some of which are new to me, which may be going onto my backlog.

Atlus was also on fire in the 6th generation I picked up SMT nocturne just based on the cover and after I beat that game I was hooked I then picked up digital devil saga 1 and 2 and later persona 3 fes By the time Persona 4 came out I actually missed it because I'd sold my PS2 and my games for an Xbox 360 and lost Odyssey :/ I eventually did get to play the enhanced golden version on the psvita
It's not a bad list at all but you missed a few very good games (Dragon Quest VIII, Growlanser V, Persona 4, Front Mission 5, Shadow Hearts Covenant, Suikoden 5)

So, I'm a little weird here. I put Persona 4 Golden over Persona 3 FES, but put FES over base Persona 4. I feel like the rebalancing, the extra month, the Adachi social link, Marie and her whole storyline, and all the other additional content and quality of life stuff really elevates it. Not that base Persona 4 isn't also good, but I try not to let one developer dominate these lists for varieties sake, and since Atlus already had two entries it had to be cut. Persona is my second favorite overall JRPG franchise of all time, though, so sympathize with the statement.

Dark Cloud's fatal flaw is the weapon system. You merge weapons to make better ones and they have a health bar. The problem is combos cannot be broken so if you start a combo and your weapon doesnt have enough health it's destroyed.
I was a sucker for my PS1 and Super Nintendo RPGs. After those the only game that came to close their quality for me personally is Lost Odyssey for the Xbox 360. As for FF10 I despise it with a passion. It changed everything and FF has never been the same since. That being said I really liked Shadow Hearts and I'm hoping Suikoden V is decent as I have that ready to play. I like the look of Ar Tolenico thanks for introducing.

But also awful, but I can never catch up lol If you enjoy Ar Tonelico, there is also a sequel also on the PS2, though the English localization on that one can be a bit rough.
I really hated that infamous plot twist in Star Ocean 3 and it happened right when the game was finally starting to get interesting. It doesn't help either that I was a huge fan of Star Ocean 2 (way better item creation and private action interaction than SO3) and the idea that everything which happened in that game (some of which references legit science concepts like the idea of a big crunch) is made a mockery of as some MMO nerd's virtual fantasy is garbage. Star Ocean, as a series, is dead to me after the first two games. My top 5 list for PS2 in no order: FF12 SMT Nocturne Metal Saga Breath of Fire 5 Shadow Hearts 2 The PS2 era is when I started to fall out of love a bit with JRPGs, perhaps in part because I didn't care much for Square's initial offerings on the system (namely FFX and Kingdom Hearts). They really let me down compared to how good they were on SNES and PS1. I think that, overall, there were a lot of decent to good JRPGs on the PS2, but few genuinely great ones. PS2 was still maybe the third best console for JRPGs overall, but I think SNES and PS1 are #1 and #2, respectively.
I never used it myself, but it's always good for there to be more options, and it's really sad that the developer basically got bullied out of the project.
Any jrpg list of the ps2 that is missing DQ 8 isnt legit in my mind. Probably had the best OST with a real orchestra, had cel shading graphics that made Toriyamas character at becoming flesh and blood. Also felt open world for its time with a great challenge and world to explore.
FF10-12 were good, but sadly I've played all of the other games on the list games and I could barely finish most of them since they were too bad or uninteresting for me. The ones I enjoyed that left me wanting more were Suikoden 3 and 5(not 4), Valkyrie Profile 2, Front Mission 4-5 and Stella Deus.
6, 7, 9 and 10 were my favourite for sure. 10s battling, sphere grid, and equipment customization were amazing and aside from a few cringey moments the story was amazing too. It helps realizing tidus was a 17 year old blitzball star with no daddy
4:40 FFX is my second favourite FF, but the FFX remaster was utterly flop considering how badly it messed up the character faces and the facial animation with it. ._.
Haven't heard this take before. Only negative reviews I've ever seen on the remasters were people were criticisms of FFX itself. I certainly didn't notice anything unusual about the facial animations, but some people are more observant about these things.
@@nerdemporium A lot of people complained about the faces. I think the real issue was keeping all the different character models that had higher or lower polygon counts. The battle character models have the lowest followed by the models used in the field followed by cutscene models when the focus was on that one particular person. But in cutscenes sometimes they still use the field models when they were not the focus of the cutscene or they were in the back and it really sticks out when it's in hd.
Tales of the Abyss have ridiculous amount of filler *content*. I tried it recently and couldnt belieave how many times i had to travel from one city to another to push the plot. The amount of going back and forth sometimes gets really close to "madness". Im not joking. Artificial gameplay prolonging are stupidly out of hand in this.

Enjoyed FF12, Rogue Galaxy, and Tales of the Abyss a lot. FF12 reminded me of classic Star Wars. Star Ocean TtEoT, Radiata Stories, FF10, Ar tonelico, Persona 3, and Devil Summoner Raidou Kuzunoha were one-and-done. Not memorable for me. Never played any of the .hack and Kingdom Hearts games.
Always nice to find someone else who really enjoyed 12. Shame that didn't translate to 10 or TtEoT. The .hack/GU remasters are pretty good, if you wanted to dip your toes into the series. A great value, too, considering it comes with all three plus a new chapter and can be found pretty cheap. Unfortunately, the original trilogy is still PS2 only and is a little rough by modern standards. How much you'd enjoy it might depend on how into 90's MMO culture you were. Kingdom Hearts...well, it's everywhere so you probably know all about it and have your reasons for not trying it yet.

Shadow Hearts 2 is fantastic. If you're a history buff, this one takes place during WW1. You owe it to yourself to check it out if you are.

The amount of going back and forth sometimes gets really close to "madness". Im not joking. Artificial gameplay prolonging are stupidly out of hand in this.

Enjoyed FF12, Rogue Galaxy, and Tales of the Abyss a lot. FF12 reminded me of classic Star Wars.
Star Ocean TtEoT, Radiata Stories, FF10, Ar tonelico, Persona 3, and Devil Summoner Raidou Kuzunoha were one-and-done. Not memorable for me.
Never played any of the .hack and Kingdom Hearts games.
Always nice to find someone else who really enjoyed 12. Shame that didn't translate to 10 or TtEoT.
The .hack/GU remasters are pretty good, if you wanted to dip your toes into the series. A great value, too, considering it comes with all three plus a new chapter and can be found pretty cheap. Unfortunately, the original trilogy is still PS2 only and is a little rough by modern standards. How much you'd enjoy it might depend on how into 90's MMO culture you were.
Kingdom Hearts...well, it's everywhere so you probably know all about it and have your reasons for not trying it yet.

Only game I really don't agree with in this list is FF12. I never cared for that game or its mechanics.
Yeah I hear that a lot, but I will continue to defend 12 to my dying breath lol
