I have SO MUCH respect for Frances McDormand. In an age where people, particularly women, hide their age with Botox, plastic surgery and billions of dollars in cosmetics, here is a woman who has the guts to give a middle finger to all of it, creates movie masterpieces and thrives by growing old naturally through her immense talent.
I like that she doesn't campaign for awards (and somehow has two Oscars) and doesn't promote films a lot but when she does everything she says is meaningful. But she has reached legendary status so she doesn't really need to do that type of stuff.
I agree. I am glad that they used "character" actors, people who don't look like models in their everyday life. People who look like normal people you would meet.
I agree, but what you just described is 99.9 percent of women. Getting botox and plastic surgery is for the rich and vain and most of us aren't that, so I hope you also have respect for that aging woman in the grocery store or at the bank too. :)

It was so fun to be a part of this move as an extra and real life nomad. I got to meet Frances M and watch Chloe Z in action. They're both so talented!
As a fulltime nomad for 6 years now (5 years in a cargo van), it was an honor to be an extra on the set and watch this brilliant cast and crew create this movie. It is a beautiful portrayal of the segment of nomads as portrayed by Jessica Bruder’s nonfiction bestseller by the same name. So many of my close nomad friends have major roles in this movie. So dang proud of everyone! KOKO!
I am a Nomad, almost 5 years now. Nature Definately brings your soul to your core of the best possibilities of who you are. Reinventing that child who got buried by life's boxes. Life becomes Adventurous and Magical again. It is the Most Alive and Real I have ever felt in My Life. Looking forward to seeing this Movie! I’m a 73 yr old nomad and been on the road for 3 years. Currently in Quartzsite. Watched this movie 3 days ago and still unsettled and depressed. The movie was very well done. Beautiful cinematography, touching, poignant dialogue and great performances by all. But it was joyless, and overall the theme was extremely dark. The scene toward the end where Fern says a final goodbye to her past life while looking out on the open snow covered desert behind her house, was hard to watch. Her sadness, pierced only by a brief smile here and there, was overwhelming. The message conveyed to me was one of an open ended, somewhat aimless lifestyle, a bit like being adrift in a vast ocean with no real purpose. I don’t think she found what she was looking for. I think she’s still searching for it.
I really didn’t get that from her character at all. I saw her as a quiet independent spirit moving through a process in her own way. I didn’t see her experiencing joylessness. I saw her taking pleasure in her small accomplishments - the repurposed toolbox from her husband that served as extra counter space, finding work to sustain herself while remaining independent and free to move on, exploring new places and enjoying their beauty. Some people are simple, quiet, purposeful and not necessarily exuberant in personality. She had a past life she had to make peace with, but I feel she accomplished that bit by bit. Interesting how different everyone’s take on this movie was. I actually did feel joy in her growth. As an old soul who likes to travel by myself and enjoy being alone, I could relate.

I'm going to love this film if I can figure out how to see it. In 1962 my new husband and I took off on a Lambretta 135 on a trip around the US. We were 21. We spent 6 months and we took $50. We took our guitars & we sang in bars & passed the hat. In every state we met wonderful people and I couldn't be happier that we did it. We slept in jail cells that were empty & we took the time to visit icons in the folk music world & progressive politics world. We picked pinion pine nuts with the Indians in Nevada, and when invited we sang at swanky Country Clubs as well. We visited the Mississippi Free Press & rode on the floor of a car with Jackson State Students so we wouldn't be hassled by cops, we being white. We stayed with Amon Hennessey in Utah and Dorothy Day in NYC. For two 21 year olds it was better than a college education and at 81, I will never forget it.
Wonderful experience when you are young. Not pretty picture when you are old and not healthy. That’s the lessons we all should take in, go experience as much as you can while you young, pamper yourself when you are old.

As a 70 yr old nomad myself, I thought the film was great. I have been to the RTR and sat in on the seminars there. It was an individual story of a collective lifestyle. ✌

You raise important points for an analysis of the movie but he's there to interview them about the movie as it is, which is based on a book about nomads and the experience of nomads they met. He's not obligated as a black interviewer to be there to grill them about black issues. And anyway what do you expect them to say to that? "Yea you're right, but we didn't include it in the movie"? I read all the comments before posting my own. Your reaction to this movie depends on your age, sex, & position in life. I am almost 80, retired, widowed, female, & had RV'd for several years. I was blown away by the book and disappointed in the movie. In my generation I have seen so many things I would have to write a book to express them all. I thought for sure that at the end of the movie she would walk out into that back door and just never return. I felt like that when I lost my life mate. I loved the RV lifestyle and was not ready to give it up after being widowed. I tried on my own but felt like a fish out of water and afraid so gave it up. I am thankful everyday that I have good pensions & good health benefits. There is no more 30 years of work, no more gold watch at the end of it, no more pensions. You have to have a 401K or a Roth IRA and better damn well plan for your retirement because no one else is going to do it for you. Think about this before you have children and try to plan for their education and your retirement at the same time. Now I am glad that I am in the check out lane in life. All the gains that have been made in my 80 years are being striped away. I am hopeful that things will come back around for the next generation but I am not optimistic . I wish good luck to the future generations.
I was absolutely struck by the powerful emotion portrayed by Chloe Zhao with this film. Her ability to observe and interpret America in this way was miraculous. 🌟 As an American born in Arizona, I cannot imagine moving to China for few years and then attempting to make a film based on contemporary change. Even from a book. Then to write a screenplay from a popular book, direct and edit a film that wins the very top honors! As well as directing a world class actress to stellar results as well...Unbelievable achievement!!🌹 The music, visuals, pacing and build of Nomadland was exceptional!
The movie made me ask questions within myself. I have plans to retire at 62 and travel, while keeping my small home. I understand the desire to explore new places, meet new people, and make new memories. Life changes are inevitable, how we embrace and respond to those changes determines our quality of life. Isn't it amazing that we always have choices?
The cinematography was incredible. It was as if the landscape was a character too. FM was the perfect person for this part. She was 100% believable. I also have to give kudos to the director for choosing non actors for primary roles. With her help, they performed beautifully.
“Unaltered aging face” Frances, like Harry Dean Stanton...striking in desert landscapes with long, slow, quiet takes. Add an austere soundtrack, my kind of movie!
The esoteric soundtrack provided by the hugely talented Ludovic Einardi matched perfectly to the sobering reality for many people in the harsh landscape of life. It was a pleasure to see my favourite actress in this role, then the joy of discovering Einardi's Seven days walking soundtrack.
Fern had options: her sister offered her a home, her new friend offered her a home, Dave and his family offered her a home. She made the choice of being a nomad because of her impossibility or unwillingness to move on from grief. My take of the whole film is that it isn't much about nomads or a social commentary of the 2008 crisis repercussions on people, that's more like just the background, but for me the movie is about a person who can't and ultimately doesn't really want to move on from the grief of loosing her husband, and thus finding the freedom of nomadic living her choice to close herself to a more conventional new life as a widow.
Yes, I dont think we want to romanticize the nomad life, the book Nomadland really exposed the hardships of elders: working in these Amazon warehouses, dying on the job, lack of insurance, farmwork-lugging big barrels of turnips, getting moved when sleeping by guards or police, etc. Its not all back to nature. Not that I didn't appreciate Ferns character portrait, this way of life has not always been a choice. I would love to know the percentage. I dont want to eclipse "houselessness" in America. Or world wide
I guess I see the grief, but some people don't have a lot of money coming in (as evidence of her not just retiring but working various lower level jobs) and also are introverts (as in her description of the open prairie, to that girl at "Dave's" daughter's house, that was outside of her and her husband's little house that gave her the impression that nothing could stop her, that she really liked...not being cooped up and restricted). In fact, it appeared to me that the reason why "Fern" didn't stay with "Dave" and his family was because she would have been boxed in, living Dave's life with HIS family. I find a lot of women who have had a first husband for a l-o-n-g period of time (especially if he died) don't want to get a 2nd husband...just want to be associated with the 1st husband forever. I follow a lot of the nomads on RUclips and they usually have problems (even Bob Wells has said this about himself) being around people for a long period of time. Whenever they park in some remote deserted BLM land, the only thing they complain about is if someone else parks within a mile of them or someone shows up in recreational vehicles briefly to enjoy the area. Yes, most of them like to be alone, dropped out of society, and with the exception of Bob, make not enough to live in an apt. whatever their income source. They are more likely to have lots of medical conditions, like crippling arthritis or have extreme sensory problems (can't take overstimulating environments, have light/smell sensitivity, etc.) or mental challenges. If they live in a van, many have just went thru a divorce, or were attacked physically in their prior lives...I know some that have 4 to 6 ex-husbands (sorry, but true), or not be able to hold down a job, even part-time, because of what I've mentioned before. I'm not being negative but these "tribes" are some place where they can be accepted for WHO they are, AS they are, and is a legitimate alternative lifestyle for those that have these challenges.
It’s so rare to watch an interviewer who not only asks the best relevant questions but does so without taking over the spotlight. Though deep, the questions are short and to the point, and he makes room for conversation among the interviewees when it comes up spontaneously. I’m a fan of interviews, which I binge-watch on RUclips, so I think this really is a rare find. Congratulations to all three, this has been such a great conversation!! (I’m hoping the interviewer’s name will be added to the description so I can search for more of his interviews!)
I have not been to a movie theater in years. Many years. My movie experience was always spoiled by those around me, interfering with my attempt to immerse myself into the mood of the film. So, while I have not yet seen this film I applauded the fact that it is a human story centering around people and their approach to living. There are no gun fights, explosions, macho killing encounters or blue screen effects. It is refreshing to see a sensitive attempt at reaching within; searching and exploring what really is important in life. Human experiences.

The fact that some people are strong enough to be who they are within the circumstances within which they must live, and to find themselves wherever they are, does not at all mean that they “belong” to those circumstances. I wish the discussions on this film could bring this crucial distinction into relief and awareness.
So lucky to have watched it at the Cairo International Film Festival last week and I really just want to say that I'm so grateful for both of you! you made me experience my whole spectrum of emotion and I know it's a good film when I feel like we are all on a journey together.. so thank you for keeping my company for a little and thank you for being so graceful, beautiful and dedicated xx

I wish I would have seen this interview video sooner. THIS is how my in-laws lived for half of their life. This movie hit home. They have since both passed on but they were always happy. They did it by choice. I always thought it was a hard life but then again, so is my “stable” lifestyle. The things I miss about them the most is meeting them out on the road somewhere or them coming here for a couple years to stay. This movie was their life.
Ever since learned about this film in production, I knew it'd turn out great because it's in good hands of these two ladies. Can't wait to watch it in the theater, instead of TV screen.
I, too, was forced out my home and town as a result of the 2008 crash. Fortunately, I was able to move to property owned by friends and trade gardening for rent ... brilliant! BUT ... there has not been enough attention paid to all of those who took such a hit in 2008-2009. Completely changed our lives. So many of us lost almost everything and have never really recovered. Where are our leaders on this?!
There are no leaders on this. We’re all on our own, it’s a new world. My concern is for those who can’t keep up with this and physically and mentally age out. What do they do, just die on the road somewhere?
I grew up with Grandparents on both sides of my family that just like to drive on the trips. Both sets were retired Marines, they preferred driving on their trips, which passed on to my parents and eventually to us their daughters. Not the same as Nomads, but I just love driving trips, cross country. We moved back to CA from Ohio over 25 years ago, with enough gas money and $90 after we returned the U-haul. Went on a trip to NY with my Grandparents on Mom's side when I was 13, and my other Grandparents after retiring from Marines with disability would just drive around the country vising their family. I have been a homebody the last few years taking care of my disabled mom but I love watching travel videos on youtube. My dream is to buy a trailer RV and travel around the country someday, like my grandparents did. Right now I work from home and take care of Mom, and husband has his own business. Frances McDormand has always reminded me of one of my Aunts, and love that she looks like the rest of us, and doesn't push a political agenda. She is an amazing actress. av

The sad part of Nomadland is how many of those people are truly Nomads at heart, how many are forced into the lifestyle by economic circumstances. It’s the failing of our society as a whole don’t have proper housing program when people are down or old.
Having watched promising young woman before Nomadland, I was on Carey Mulligan train. Then I watched Nomadland..I felt what Frances did in this movie was not acting..it was natural..I felt as if Fern is a real nomad.. naturally having conversations with real life nomad. Nothing over the top..very soulful subtle performance. Sad part is Oscars are all about showy performance which is ample this year (Viola, Carey, Andra Day, Vanessa Kirby).
The depression some people feel after watching this movie comes from the realization that what they value has little meaning. So, sure, you're gonna feel down and sad about that when you find out most of your memories, your favourite painting, your couch, your rug, and other objects are pretty meaningless. What does have value and meaning? Fern discovered it. So have those who watched the movie and feel not depressed but the opposite, alive and invigorated. What it is is the discovery that nature in all its forms is the same as your very own nature as a human being. It ain't a couch, that's for sure.
Odd that they never mentioned or gave props to Jessica Bruder, the writer of the book Nomadland. It seems to me without her this film might not have ever happened.
Wonderful film with superb casting. One point I was appreciative of was their decision to stay away from a focus or any depiction of violence toward women in general and specifically in the nomad lifestyle. This film did not start down the path of physical violence and bring in that constant fear element. We could explore Fern and the other characters more fully without that element.
I had my doubts about the film at first that it might be preachy or hipster or maudlin but when the scene came early in the film, where the man left the dog behind, and this woman asked Fern if she would take the dog -- and the camera hung on that dog for a moment -- and she did *not* take the dog -- I knew it would be a keeper. It's almost like film courses could be taught with the adage: leave the dog, it's ok to leave the dog. It doesn't have to be like every Lassie-type movie out there.
I can't wait to see this move, as I'm a huge fan of Frances McDormand and so excited that Chloe Zhao is responsible for this. The words about remembering and living are what really resonated with me. You do want to remember the people who mattered, the life you once had, but you keep on living, hopefully embracing the past and present.
I am encouraged by the comments here, people enjoyed the movie, yet found it sufficiently depressing to keep people away from our lifestyle. Too many people wreck everything they touch.
This movie was so moving, and whether it just came out of the script itself or it was Frances' portrayal, what I love most about this film (of many things I love about it) is it represents and shows empathy to working class people of America. A lot of Hollywood jokes come at the expense of smalltown and/or rural America and people who are blue-collar (and I am *NOT* referring to trump/MAGA people either, that's a separate issue in my mind). So to see a Hollywood film celebrate working class folks who maybe don't have the two-story house the white picket fence, and the tall glass of lemonade, to me that's real art instead of celebrating the parts of society that are already lavished, babied, catered to and over-represented in film. I hope very much that Miss Zhao and Miss McDormand will work together on other projects because I think the two of them have some artistic synergy which deserves a longer sojourn together.

I wish I could watch Nomadland - and critique/review it! I've done a few years as an ozzi nomad and people become nomads for a whole variety of reasons. ...some of the RV channels i watch on youtube are talking about this movie - and from what i can gather the central character and plot is centred around Bob Wells, the RTR and WRTR and the 'sort' of people he helps. These people are only a small portion of the nomad lifestyle. As a sweeping remark i might say that many nomads I've encountered here are running and trying to escape something/someone/commercialism - whilst others do it as part of being connected more to the lands, the seasons and nature's awe and cycles - and there are a lot of shades in between. .
So far I have watched the movie three times and I still did not get the idea that Fern was a true nomad. I thought she found while being a nomad that she didn't need a bunch of stuff and was able to break all connections with her past and then set out to find her new place in life. Whether she would stay a nomad forever or just until she found a new place to start over, only Fern knows.
I wanna see these 2 in action/crime/detective/drama movie. Zhao's movies are so much like Taylor Sheridan's movie. Its kinda slow but full of mysteries and depth in the characters with beautiful settings and it feels so real.

I felt the exact same way. My husband and I were surprised by how dark and gloomy it was. It took awhile to break that spell off of us afterwards.

He's not obligated as a black interviewer to be there to grill them about black issues. And anyway what do you expect them to say to that? "Yea you're right, but we didn't include it in the movie"? Then what?? Use your brain a little.

I read all the comments before posting my own. Your reaction to this movie depends on your age, sex, & position in life. I am almost 80, retired, widowed, female, & had RV'd for several years. I was blown away by the book and disappointed in the movie. In my generation I have seen so many things I would have to write a book to express them all. I thought for sure that at the end of the movie she would walk out into that back door and just never return. I felt like that when I lost my life mate. I loved the RV lifestyle and was not ready to give it up after being widowed. I tried on my own but felt like a fish out of water and afraid so gave it up. I am thankful everyday that I have good pensions & good health benefits. There is no more 30 years of work, no more gold watch at the end of it, no more pensions. You have to have a 401K or a Roth IRA and better damn well plan for your retirement because no one else is going to do it for you. Think about this before you have children and try to plan for their education and your retirement at the same time. Now I am glad that I am in the check out lane in life. All the gains that have been made in my 80 years are being striped away. I am hopeful that things will come back around for the next generation but I am not optimistic . I wish good luck to the future generations.

As an American born in Arizona, I cannot imagine moving to China for few years and then attempting to make a film based on contemporary change. Even from a book. Then to write a screenplay from a popular book, direct and edit a film that wins the very top honors! As well as directing a world class actress to stellar results as well...Unbelievable achievement!!🌹
The music, visuals, pacing and build of Nomadland was exceptional!
The movie made me ask questions within myself. I have plans to retire at 62 and travel, while keeping my small home. I understand the desire to explore new places, meet new people, and make new memories. Life changes are inevitable, how we embrace and respond to those changes determines our quality of life. Isn't it amazing that we always have choices?
One of the best films of the year. So moving and FM was incredible in it! Chloe Zhao is paving an incredible career for herself as a filmmaker.
The cinematography was incredible. It was as if the landscape was a character too. FM was the perfect person for this part. She was 100% believable. I also have to give kudos to the director for choosing non actors for primary roles. With her help, they performed beautifully.

“Unaltered aging face” Frances, like Harry Dean Stanton...striking in desert landscapes with long, slow, quiet takes. Add an austere soundtrack, my kind of movie!
The esoteric soundtrack provided by the hugely talented Ludovic Einardi matched perfectly to the sobering reality for many people in the harsh landscape of life. It was a pleasure to see my favourite actress in this role, then the joy of discovering Einardi's Seven days walking soundtrack.
This is my life having worked for Amazon, and soon to be entering the Vanlife movement. I really enjoyed and appreciated the depth of this movie!
Fern had options: her sister offered her a home, her new friend offered her a home, Dave and his family offered her a home. She made the choice of being a nomad because of her impossibility or unwillingness to move on from grief. My take of the whole film is that it isn't much about nomads or a social commentary of the 2008 crisis repercussions on people, that's more like just the background, but for me the movie is about a person who can't and ultimately doesn't really want to move on from the grief of loosing her husband, and thus finding the freedom of nomadic living her choice to close herself to a more conventional new life as a widow.

Yes, I dont think we want to romanticize the nomad life, the book Nomadland really exposed the hardships of elders: working in these Amazon warehouses, dying on the job, lack of insurance, farmwork-lugging big barrels of turnips, getting moved when sleeping by guards or police, etc. Its not all back to nature. Not that I didn't appreciate Ferns character portrait, this way of life has not always been a choice. I would love to know the percentage. I dont want to eclipse "houselessness" in America. Or world wide
I guess I see the grief, but some people don't have a lot of money coming in (as evidence of her not just retiring but working various lower level jobs) and also are introverts (as in her description of the open prairie, to that girl at "Dave's" daughter's house, that was outside of her and her husband's little house that gave her the impression that nothing could stop her, that she really liked...not being cooped up and restricted). In fact, it appeared to me that the reason why "Fern" didn't stay with "Dave" and his family was because she would have been boxed in, living Dave's life with HIS family. I find a lot of women who have had a first husband for a l-o-n-g period of time (especially if he died) don't want to get a 2nd husband...just want to be associated with the 1st husband forever. I follow a lot of the nomads on RUclips and they usually have problems (even Bob Wells has said this about himself) being around people for a long period of time. Whenever they park in some remote deserted BLM land, the only thing they complain about is if someone else parks within a mile of them or someone shows up in recreational vehicles briefly to enjoy the area. Yes, most of them like to be alone, dropped out of society, and with the exception of Bob, make not enough to live in an apt. whatever their income source. They are more likely to have lots of medical conditions, like crippling arthritis or have extreme sensory problems (can't take overstimulating environments, have light/smell sensitivity, etc.) or mental challenges. If they live in a van, many have just went thru a divorce, or were attacked physically in their prior lives...I know some that have 4 to 6 ex-husbands (sorry, but true), or not be able to hold down a job, even part-time, because of what I've mentioned before. I'm not being negative but these "tribes" are some place where they can be accepted for WHO they are, AS they are, and is a legitimate alternative lifestyle for those that have these challenges.

It’s so rare to watch an interviewer who not only asks the best relevant questions but does so without taking over the spotlight. Though deep, the questions are short and to the point, and he makes room for conversation among the interviewees when it comes up spontaneously. I’m a fan of interviews, which I binge-watch on RUclips, so I think this really is a rare find. Congratulations to all three, this has been such a great conversation!!

I have not been to a movie theater in years. Many years. My movie experience was always spoiled by those around me, interfering with my attempt to immerse myself into the mood of the film. So, while I have not yet seen this film I applauded the fact that it is a human story centering around people and their approach to living. There are no gun fights, explosions, macho killing encounters or blue screen effects. It is refreshing to see a sensitive attempt at reaching within; searching and exploring what really is important in life. Human experiences.
This one is playing on Hulu.com. No theatre are open here in California right now. I guess other places they might be.
Chloé Zhao became the first Chinese American woman to win the Academy Award for best director in the Oscars' 93-year history. Her film “Nomadland” also won awards for best picture and best actress....
The fact that some people are strong enough to be who they are within the circumstances within which they must live, and to find themselves wherever they are, does not at all mean that they “belong” to those circumstances. I wish the discussions on this film could bring this crucial distinction into relief and awareness.

I wish I would have seen this interview video sooner. THIS is how my in-laws lived for half of their life. This movie hit home. They have since both passed on but they were always happy. They did it by choice. I always thought it was a hard life but then again, so is my “stable” lifestyle. The things I miss about them the most is meeting them out on the road somewhere or them coming here for a couple years to stay. This movie was their life.

Ever since learned about this film in production, I knew it'd turn out great because it's in good hands of these two ladies. Can't wait to watch it in the theater, instead of TV screen.
I, too, was forced out my home and town as a result of the 2008 crash. Fortunately, I was able to move to property owned by friends and trade gardening for rent ... brilliant! BUT ... there has not been enough attention paid to all of those who took such a hit in 2008-2009. Completely changed our lives. So many of us lost almost everything and have never really recovered. Where are our leaders on this?!
There are no leaders on this. We’re all on our own, it’s a new world. My concern is for those who can’t keep up with this and physically and mentally age out. What do they do, just die on the road somewhere?
I grew up with Grandparents on both sides of my family that just like to drive on the trips. Both sets were retired Marines, they preferred driving on their trips, which passed on to my parents and eventually to us their daughters. Not the same as Nomads, but I just love driving trips, cross country. We moved back to CA from Ohio over 25 years ago, with enough gas money and $90 after we returned the U-haul. Went on a trip to NY with my Grandparents on Mom's side when I was 13, and my other Grandparents after retiring from Marines with disability would just drive around the country vising their family. I have been a homebody the last few years taking care of my disabled mom but I love watching travel videos on youtube. My dream is to buy a trailer RV and travel around the country someday, like my grandparents did. Right now I work from home and take care of Mom, and husband has his own business. Frances McDormand has always reminded me of one of my Aunts, and love that she looks like the rest of us, and doesn't push a political agenda. She is an amazing actress. av

The sad part of Nomadland is how many of those people are truly Nomads at heart, how many are forced into the lifestyle by economic circumstances. It’s the failing of our society as a whole don’t have proper housing program when people are down or old.

Having watched promising young woman before Nomadland, I was on Carey Mulligan train. Then I watched Nomadland..I felt what Frances did in this movie was not acting..it was natural..I felt as if Fern is a real nomad.. naturally having conversations with real life nomad. Nothing over the top..very soulful subtle performance. Sad part is Oscars are all about showy performance which is ample this year (Viola, Carey, Andra Day, Vanessa Kirby).

The depression some people feel after watching this movie comes from the realization that what they value has little meaning. So, sure, you're gonna feel down and sad about that when you find out most of your memories, your favourite painting, your couch, your rug, and other objects are pretty meaningless. What does have value and meaning? Fern discovered it. So have those who watched the movie and feel not depressed but the opposite, alive and invigorated. What it is is the discovery that nature in all its forms is the same as your very own nature as a human being. It ain't a couch, that's for sure.

One of the best of the year. I had the same take of Fern. I was never worried about her, I was excited for her.
Odd that they never mentioned or gave props to Jessica Bruder, the writer of the book Nomadland. It seems to me without her this film might not have ever happened.
Wonderful film with superb casting. One point I was appreciative of was their decision to stay away from a focus or any depiction of violence toward women in general and specifically in the nomad lifestyle. This film did not start down the path of physical violence and bring in that constant fear element. We could explore Fern and the other characters more fully without that element.
This movie is life changing; simply amazing!
I had my doubts about the film at first that it might be preachy or hipster or maudlin but when the scene came early in the film, where the man left the dog behind, and this woman asked Fern if she would take the dog -- and the camera hung on that dog for a moment -- and she did *not* take the dog -- I knew it would be a keeper. It's almost like film courses could be taught with the adage: leave the dog, it's ok to leave the dog. It doesn't have to be like every Lassie-type movie out there.
I can't wait to see this move, as I'm a huge fan of Frances McDormand and so excited that Chloe Zhao is responsible for this. The words about remembering and living are what really resonated with me. You do want to remember the people who mattered, the life you once had, but you keep on living, hopefully embracing the past and present.
Congratulations to these great women: Nomadland is a real Masterpiece!
I am encouraged by the comments here, people enjoyed the movie, yet found it sufficiently depressing to keep people away from our lifestyle. Too many people wreck everything they touch.
This movie was so moving, and whether it just came out of the script itself or it was Frances' portrayal, what I love most about this film (of many things I love about it) is it represents and shows empathy to working class people of America. A lot of Hollywood jokes come at the expense of smalltown and/or rural America and people who are blue-collar (and I am *NOT* referring to trump/MAGA people either, that's a separate issue in my mind). So to see a Hollywood film celebrate working class folks who maybe don't have the two-story house the white picket fence, and the tall glass of lemonade, to me that's real art instead of celebrating the parts of society that are already lavished, babied, catered to and over-represented in film. I hope very much that Miss Zhao and Miss McDormand will work together on other projects because I think the two of them have some artistic synergy which deserves a longer sojourn together.

I wish I could watch Nomadland - and critique/review it! I've done a few years as an ozzi nomad and people become nomads for a whole variety of reasons. ...some of the RV channels i watch on youtube are talking about this movie - and from what i can gather the central character and plot is centred around Bob Wells, the RTR and WRTR and the 'sort' of people he helps. These people are only a small portion of the nomad lifestyle. As a sweeping remark i might say that many nomads I've encountered here are running and trying to escape something/someone/commercialism - whilst others do it as part of being connected more to the lands, the seasons and nature's awe and cycles - and there are a lot of shades in between. .
Been on the road full time (traveling artist) since April 1, 2000-

A brilliant piece of work, extraordinary collaborations.
So far I have watched the movie three times and I still did not get the idea that Fern was a true nomad. I thought she found while being a nomad that she didn't need a bunch of stuff and was able to break all connections with her past and then set out to find her new place in life. Whether she would stay a nomad forever or just until she found a new place to start over, only Fern knows.
I wanna see these 2 in action/crime/detective/drama movie. Zhao's movies are so much like Taylor Sheridan's movie. Its kinda slow but full of mysteries and depth in the characters with beautiful settings and it feels so real.
