I’m about to start my journey to commercial pilot! I’m 34 years old, I’ve worked in my field for 16 years and I’m just getting tired of it. Since I was a child I have wanted to become a pilot, now I’m about to make it happen!
I desperately want to be a pilot. The problem I’m running into is getting in. I have a family, bills, mortgage etc. I wish there was an equivalent to a federal Pell grant or just reasonable financial aid for prospective pilots.
I agree. I really wish there was a federal program but there are scholarships that are available even for the more non traditional applicant such as yourself. We have a directory with over 120 million in scholarships at www.aviationcareerspodcast.com/scholarships/ Financial challenges are a large hurtle many must overcome but with planning and perseverance I know you will reach your goal. One of the best ways to get started is with a plan. I have helped many pilots formulate a budget for training but the most important thing to do is start today! I know you can do it.
Working on my PPL at the moment. Just did my solo flight recently. Thinking about Flying as career just figuring out the costs. Also building the 1500 hours seems to be a huge pain.
I am 24 years old and I have an interest in learning to become a pilot, however this interest has just begun within the last year. I have a degree in media and journalism but I want to be a pilot, how do you make becoming a pilot affordable especially if I don’t have loads of money and how do you know if your cut out for the work.
You could try and apply for scholarships. We have the largest directory of scholarships. You can find out more at www.aviationcareerspodcast.com/scholarships/.
About the last point " living anywhere in the world". Can I work for Canadian company for example air Canada and settle somewhere in Europe maybe Spain or Germany ? Or I have to reside in Canada.
Yes but remember most carriers will require you to be a citizen or have landed immigrant status. More importantly you should research where you want to live and how you will commute to base. I have had commutes where I have lived out of the country and it has taken me 12 to 24 hours to get to work. Something to figure into the lifestyle of living over seas. With that said some European cities have many flights and are easier for your commute.
The current market is demotivating. Brand new CFI here can’t even find a job. The Boeing and Pratt & Whitney issues caused a hiring slowdown, plus way too many F.Os at the regionals
The market has changed and the Pratt Whitney and Boeing issues will resolve themselves in the next few years. Now is the time to concentrate on building hours and obtaining additional ratings. The future looks bright but simply having a pilot certificate will not get you hired in this environment. Keep looking and don't give up. Feel free to join us in a future group mentorship session at: www.aviationcareerspodcast.com/coaching/
Although the market is competitive our clients have been hired in this environment. Hiring at the airlines is very cyclic. We help our clients prepare for all aspects of the hiring cycle. Remember to take one step every day towards your career goal and don't give up. It is time to build flight time and ratings during this slow down in hiring. Our next group mentorship is tomorrow. Excited to hear more about your journey to the flight deck!

How could someone commute from Italy to NY?
If reserve call out is 2-12 hours, how could they make it on time?
Escape corporate hell. Also lifestyle/travel.

The worst regionals aren't even hiring. Don't fall for the marketing schemes. Airline hiring is abysmal right now.
