Waterloo is in Belgium and the Battle of Waterloo was in 1815 when the British and Prussians defeated Napoleon Bonaparte and the First French Empire. I'd really recommend trying to go for some ABBA music videos with their songs, they add a lot to the experience.

ABBA is a Swedish pop/disco group formed in 1972. The lead female singers are Agnetha Fältskog (the blonde in their videos) and Anni-Frida Lyngstad. The lead males are Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. The group's name is an acronym of the first letters of their first names ('A'gentha 'B'enny 'B'jorn 'A'nni). Even though they only had a 10 year run, they are one of the most successful groups in music history having reportedly sold upwards of 200 million records, depending on the source you refer to. They have an INCREDIBLE catalog of fantastic songs -- pop, disco, ballads, etc...!

Hello, nice to see you for first time with your first reaction to ABBA songs
ABBA is a swedish pop group that recording between 1972/1982, and after almost 40 years return to record a new album that now is a worldwide success
ABBA is acronim with initials of names:
    A Agnetha blonde singer
    B Björn guitarist songwriter
    B Benny pianist songwriter
    A Anni Frida brunette singer
They was two couples too, that divorced before the end of the group
"Waterloo" (1974) is one of my favorites, and is in my Top 5 of all ABBA songs
(with S.O.S. , Dancing Queen, Chiquitita & The winner takes it all)
and I think that is the song that change history, not only for ABBA, for Sweden and Eurovision too
"Waterloo" was the song that ABBA wrote especially to participate in the annual Eurovision Song Contest
By the rules of the competition the songs could not exceed 3 minutes
    and ABBA made a masterpiece!
ABBA sing it in Swedish, for the local selection in Sweden (February 1974)
and finally ABBA sing it in English in the final held in England (April 1974) before 16 artist and songs from all over Europe.
it's a link to that historic moment:
    ruclips.net/video/Vp1_OKawHYw/видео.html
"Waterloo" and ABBA win Eurovision for the first time for Sweden
It will be Their first big worldwide hit: #1 in UK and half Europe (also South Africa), and Top 10 in U.S., Canada, Australia , New Zealand and the rest of Europe
ABBA recording "Waterloo" in swedish, english, german and french
Several years later, in 2005, to the 50th Eurovision anniversary, "Waterloo" was chosen as the Best Song in all the history of Eurovisión
"Waterloo", with all the songs of my Top 5, and 14 more songs, was included in ABBA recopilation album 'GOLD' that a few mounth ago arrives to 1000 weeks of permanence at Top 100 in UK Official Charts (first group singer or artist to do it in UK)
I hope you have a nice weekend
    Kind regards from
    Buenos Aires Argentina
    South América

  • @eduardooscar309
    @eduardooscar309 2 года назад +6

and another comment about what is and means Waterloo
It was a conceptual and marketing idea that the ABBA manager had
He was looking for an impact title, known in Europe and easy to remember, to help its future dissemination
and he finds it in Waterloo, which is the most historical important and iconic battle held in Europe in 1815, when the troops of the French Emperor Napoleon were defeated by the Anglo-Prussian coalition in the fields of Waterloo (present-day Belgium) and ended the reign of Napoleon in all Europe
the song would be an allegory and compares the surrender of Napoleon with the surrender of a woman to her love for hers beloved
    and it was!
Waterloo was the most icónic song (and ABBA the most icónic perfomance) in all Eurovisión history between 1956/2021

ABBA is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with record sales estimated to be between 150 million and 385 million sold worldwide[13][14] and the group was ranked 3rd best-selling singles artists in the United Kingdom with a total of 11.3 million singles sold by 3 November 2012.[15] ABBA was the first group from a non-English-speaking country to achieve consistent success in the charts of English-speaking countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.[16] They are the best-selling Swedish band of all time[17] and the best-selling band originating in continental Europe. ABBA had eight consecutive number-one albums in the UK. The group also enjoyed significant success in Latin America and recorded a collection of their hit songs in Spanish. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, the first and only recording artists to receive this honour from outside an Anglophone country.[18] In 2015, their song "Dancing Queen" was inducted into the Recording Academy's Grammy Hall of Fame.[19]

Why is the beat so happy but the lyrics are sad?
That's like 80% of ABBA songs hahahahaha
For the lead singer of ABBA, it's both women. However when the men thinks one song is suited for a certain lead they give it to her and vice versa. Overall Agnetha has more leads than Frida but they always back each other up.
ABBA has also been credited with having a third voice. It's Agnetha and Frida together. Their two voices harmonize unlike any thing I've heard in the music industry cause they use the wall of sound where there are sometimes 2-4 layers of vocals between the two leads, making it sound perfect. It's very unique to them.

Waterloo is located in Belgium and It's the place where Napoleon was ultimately defeated by the englishmen lead by the Duke of Wellington. Every primary student in Europe knows it. Not in USA? Maybe you would say Alamo. Waterloo is the epitome of a military defeat (in Italy we have Caporetto, also, in WWI)

ABBA's catalogue of hits worldwide is huge and ridiculously good! Their collection album ABBA Gold has been in the UK top 100 for over 1000 weeks.
You need to see them in action, try any of their 20 worldwide number 1's
Gimme Gimme Gimme, Mamma Mia, SOS, Dancing Queen, Fernando, Chiquitita, Knowing Me Knowing You, Money Money Money,, The Name of the Game,The Winner Takes it All, Super Trouper, Take a Chance on Me, I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do, One of Us, Ring Ring, Summer Night City, I have a Dream, Head Over Heels, Don't Shut Me Down.
But really, dozens of other superb tracks including Voulez Vous, I Am The City, Eagle, The Day Before You Came, Lay All Your Love On Me, So Long, Does Your Mother Know, ... you get the idea!
If you want to see what the band looked like in their heyday try the vid 'If it wasn't for the nights original broadcast 1978 ' in Japan.

Waterloo is in today's Belgium, formerly part of the Kingdom of Netherlands at the time of the battle. ABBA are the best ever.

Abba was two ex-husbands writing songs that put words in their ex-wives mouths. You won't find that very often.

@@eviekelpie1 Well, Björn and Agnetha were separated already in 1979, i.e. before they did the US tour and the Japan tour. So they worked together for about three years as separated (say early 79 to early 82). Much the same for Benny and Frida actually. Björn and Agetha also had kids, so they celebrated christmas and such together, according to themselves.

@@herrbonk3635 Yes that's right they did get separated before the finish of ABBA . Yes Agnetha and Bjorn had 2 children before they began ABBA.

@@eviekelpie1 Not really before Abba. Their kid Linda was born in 1973, about a year into the Abba-period, although before their large international break into the anglo saxon world.
But they worked together already in 1969, for some studio recordings, although not as Abba. They also had a cabaré group of sorts they called Festfolket in 1970 :)

@@herrbonk3635 I've watched their documentaries and yes here in Australia they really didn't hit the mark until 1974. We were their biggest record buyers. Then they toured here and it went crazy!

ABBA,(initials taken from each of their names), were one of the most successful pop groups in the 70s. Huge here in Australia. 2 married couples. BJ, 2 females singing. From Sweden, and it's a fact they were Sweden's largest export besides Volvo cars. This song won them the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974. Check out,
    Mamma Mia

BJ is 'on the nose' - totally correct with his explanation of Waterloo as a battle of love.
