Leah, the handymen came just today to take a look at my sliding doors, and I am awaiting a quotation from them. You have literally just solved my problem and saved me some expenses!!! Could not have come at a better time! Love from Trinidad & Tobago! Keep up the great work :)
You’re a lifesaver!!!! I’ve been struggling with this door for months and as a last resort before calling a repair company I came to RUclips to see if there was a way to fix it myself. Soooo glad I came across your video!!! Literally 5 minutes of work after watching your video and it’s running smooth!!!! I can’t thank you enough for this you saved me time, money, and the hassle!!!💞💞💞💞😘😘😘
I didn't know that they even had adjustment screws. I don't have sliding doors in my current house, but I'm glad that I know about them now. You just never know when you might run across that problem somewhere else. Thanks, Leah. I'll bet this video is going to help a lot of people.
Your channel is exactly what I have been looking for! My husband is not exactly the do-it-yourself type, which kind of leaves me to take on the roll of 'handyman'. I don't mind at all actually, but now I can do things around the house with a lot more confidence. :) Thank you!
Thank you Ms. Leah, as always I am very enjoying your video and your step by step is very clear, thank you and by the way welcome back and hope all is well with you and your family Leah.
One of your viewers left this comment: "I love your direction for the adjusting screw. Rather than trying to remember which way does what you simply say to try one way, and if that does not work try the the other way. Perfect?" If anyone does it that way, be very careful. Here's why . . . If you turn a screw and nothing happens, does it mean you've turned it the right direction, the wrong direction, or does it mean you haven't turned it far enough in any direction? Don't leave it to chance. Make sure you turn it the correct direction. If you're turning the screw clockwise, the wheels will extend causing the door to move upwards. Eventually, it will reach a point when you can no longer turn the screw. If you turn the screw counter-clockwise, the wheels will retract causing the door to move downwards until the door is resting on the bottom track. At that point, the screw will continue to turn but you will see no movement of the door. If you continue to turn, the screw will not stop and eventually you will hear the noise of the retaining nut fall off inside the frame and the screw will pull completely out of the frame. Then, you're really screwed!
Ok. I had a problem with my sliding door. Everything worked perfectly then one day it wouldn’t slide at all. At the end of the door underneath it in the track was that retaining nut. Do I need a new door now? Is there any way to open the door frame? It doesn’t look like it is even possible!
@@Rockshredder Most often you will see a second screw sticking out of the side of the door frame, or it'll be recessed slightly. Losen that screw and one of two things will happen. Either the entire roller mechanism will fall out of the hole where normally only the roller protrude, or the entire bottom section of the frame will come off. Either way, you "should" be able to install that retaining nut and re-attach it to the door. If you plan to do this, go the extra mile and inspect the rollers for wear and tear, because if they need replacing, now would be the time to do it.
@@rpprevost I took off all the screws on the outside of the door. It didn't open up. What I found is the wheels could be moved around as they slid everywhere at the bottom of the panel. I had to take a screw driver (or even a pen would work) and move the wheels to where they belonged. I knew where they belonged because the screw hole would line up with the wheel assembly. I screwed it down then did the same to the other side. I don't know what the nut did as the screws are similar to wood screws but the door is working better. Hopefully I can make some fine adjustments with the bottom screws but it is fine for the moment.
Thanks for posting. I like to use a small pry bar to lift the door gently as I turn the screw to raise the door. It take the weight off the assembly, and lessens the chance of stripping the screw head because you need to twist much harder when it has weight on it. :-)
Thanks Leah. For my sliding door, the installer recommended furniture polish after cleaning the track. It doesn't attract dirt and the door slides smooth as silk!
At first I thought, "Clean the track? Well, duh!" But you went on...Raise the wheels??! Wheels! Dry lube?!! Holy head smack, you're a genius!! The things I never knew I never knew. Thanx, again and again, Leah.
Good advice Leah. I have cleaned a many of these sliding doors in my life. It wasn't long after doing it a time or two I learned about those screws. Awesome tip!!
THANKS I have a 1950 home with 3 sets 4 'X 7' Sliding glass Patio door one was sliding to hard so I followed your instruction and its fixed WOW! The door least used in like new this one even after adjusting is not as smooth but it's November in Michigan so replacing the rollers may be something in the summer but what a difference it made it was rubbing on bottom track just the right side left side of door roller is fine.
Lea, your awesome. Who knew that those wheels were adjustable. It is like a secret guys keep. They go and fix it and they do the man chest bang, when it is just that simple.
For 2 years I have lived in this apt. I have a very large beautiful balcony, but anytime I opened my sliding door it was so loud every neighbor complained so I limited my balcony use then I came across this video. Not only was there concrete on my track! Which I scraped off then cleaned and adjusted the wheel. Now that door is so dam quiet I was stunned. So thank you very much. And yes we have maintenance people but they all got fired and the new guys never come to fix anything. Anyone got a video of how to repair the hot water leak in my bathtub faucet?
I don't have sliding doors in the homes I own, or in our mother's home, but need to know what to do to correct the problem with other doors at homes of those I know. Thanks so much for sharing this information and I hope your week is nice for you.
I didn't know a slide door can be adjust with screw. My wife always complains about our patio door is too heave.I used to paint the rail with engine oil for smooth.Thank you great lady, I will try do it tomorrow.
Another clear, simple and especially helpful video Leah! I’ve seen lots of videos about adjusting wheel height, but nothing on fixing a door that rubs on the side of the track. On mine, the door slides about halfway open before the gap between the frame and the side of the rail closes. From there on, it’s rubbing. It’s as if the part the rollers ride on is not parallel with the side of the rail.
I did the way as you shown. But I think the roller need to replace. But the sliding door works much more better than earlier. Thanks for your guidance.
Sugestion from pet owner. No not use WD40 or similar lubricants unless you like cleaning up dog barf. I use Pam cooking spay. It smells better and works great but doesn't seem to last very long - you have to respray every 2 or 3 months.
Amazing Leah, thank you so much. We just bought our first home and I can't tell you how many of these videos feel like I can do this! I know what to look for at the home warehouse now, how much I can fix over time. Thank you again, your the best!!!! HUGS ~*Shana
I love your direction for the adjusting screw. Rather than trying to remember which way does what you simply say to try one way, and if that does not work try the the other way. Perfect?
Question: If you're turning the screw, and nothing is happening, does it mean you're turning it the wrong direction or you haven't turned it enough? Answer: Don't leave it to chance. Make sure you turn it the correct direction. See my comment above for the explanation of why.
OK I have a question what if you rotate the wheel screw on the back of the door trying to get it to raise a little bit but no matter which way you turn it it’s still isn’t high enough to overcome a screw holding the Metal frame down to the floor. I think in my case I need to put the dry lubricate on the weatherstripping of the door At the bottom and the top any advice would be appreciated
I fixed my sliding door last summer. Fixing stuff takes some detective work. Would not slide easy. Look at wheels. They had rusted stiff so they needed replacing. It DOES feel good to accomplish something on one's own!
Good video, for once I knew how to do it as well. I did want to mention it may be a good idea to test the smell of the dry lube before putting it on. Some of them smell strong and smell may last longer that one would like.
These are all good, common-sense tips, and I will add one more: If the door just won't budge, find a tall strong person who can lift it *very slightly* out of its track. When my T.S.P. did this, I spotted a *penny* in the track, which had been blocking the door. How it got there, I haven't a clue....
Good info thanks! What if I have a normal glass storm door that doesn't close anymore... it's sagging and the only way to close it is by lifting up the while door and shoving it closed!
You probably need new rollers & possibly a new track. If the rollers are not adjusting anymore, they, or the cartridge is worn out. With heavy doors the cartridges sometimes have a groove worn in the adjustment guide slots, making them non-adjustable. If the track is still good, replace the rollers as soon as you can before the door starts dragging on the track, causing flat spots and then it will require replacement.
Leah, I found a lubricant called Fluid Film. This stuff is bad to the BONE! I am in Mississippi. Not sure if they sell it where you are but keep your eyes peeled and grab a can
This popped up because I watched other videos for fixing sliding glass doors. I actually had to replace the rollers on mine. One was totally ceased up. The other didn't move well. I probably could have cleaned them up to make them work, but you could see the damage on the ceased up one. (cost less than $20 from Home Depot) If the door still doesn't move well after cleaning the frame and oiling the rollers(only the rollers), you probably need to replace the rollers. You don't oil the frame of a Garage door, why would you oil the frame of a sliding glass door? Just oil the rollers.
Thanks for another wonderful video, Leah! One of my roller adjustment screws is stuck and won't turn. Any suggestions on how to loosen it up? Also, what's the lubricant you are using? Can I use WD-40 on both the track and the screw?

You always seem to post the specific how-to video that addresses the random one-off problems I have at home. Thanks!
Right? It's how specific she is!

HI Marianne, glad you found us and welcome!
I just love how you carefully explain everything! So helpful! I have this problem, so I'm going to go try to do this now. Thank you!
good luck

Nice! Thanks for sharing that tip.
Candle wax is even better. Just rub the candle on the track.
Thank you for this explanation. I had no idea there were wheels in there or how to adjust them, this was very helpful and clear.
glad to help

Leah! I swear you read my mind!!!! Love, your super fan!
But, between the two glass panels (vertically) there seems to be some sort of loose/old weather stripping that is adding to the problem!

Just what I needed! You rock, Leah!
Thank you for making this so easy to understand and for showing exactly how the door lifts off of the track.
Leah thank you so much for for help. We've had a slider door stuck for 3 years. Now it opens and closes like a brand new door 👍👍👍
I will be doing this tomorrow. Thanks Leah
Thank you very much for the tips , I just did it and now the door is working great.
I needed this, sliding door works like new again. Thanks Leah!
We use WD-40 SPECIALIST Dry Lube. Good stuff. Thanks again, Leah!

what dry lubricant did you use?

Hope this helps.
How do i fix a sliding aluminiam patio door my dog crashed into and bent the track 😮
Aluminum is a very soft metal, you may be able to bend it back
Where you adjusted the first screw what the lower hole for?
The lower hole for the door in the video is to actually remove the wheels in the event that they're broken and need to be replaced.
seejanedrill. that's VERY important to know the difference in the two... thx for the diy

I'll look for it.
search for "fluid film". It shows that Lowes, Home Depot and wal-mart along with many others offer fluid film.
Rubbing a candle on the track usually works just fine. DO NOT use oil.
Thank you
you're welcome!
Is the spray something like windex?
Just an all-purpose cleaning spray
My sliding door is stuck. Cant open at all. Any idea?
what do you do if the screws are stuck?
Lol good point I see my screws are like torx shaped 4 sided and those suckers are stuckkkkk still trying 😢
🙏
THANK YOU! This darn !@#$@%@$^ door has been making me crazy!!
They can do that!
Silicone spray is your best friend

Why Dry Lube? would something like WD-40 work?
Jim Frye I think a dry lube is used because it won't attract and accumulate grime like a wet lube (wd-40/other CLPs) would
Pathary, You're right!
Mine sliding door doesn't have screws on both sides just 1 side
My door has no screw hole / accessible mechanism at the bottom.

How to get lock out?Drill out would be fine.Need to open door
Thanks for another wonderful video, Leah! One of my roller adjustment screws is stuck and won't turn. Any suggestions on how to loosen it up? Also, what's the lubricant you are using? Can I use WD-40 on both the track and the screw?
WD-40 should not be used as a lubricant.
Hey this Really Works, lol my wife thinks I'm a pro....
👍😃😘
You have Very good Communications skills 😃👍👏👏👏👏👏
