Turned 42 yesterday and your channel gives me hope and effort for many more years of running with speed work and training. I am bigger and always been slower than you but still gives me hope!
Thanks for this comment. I love hearing this! For what it’s worth, most people are bigger than me. This is a sport that rewards the runts. :). You’ve got plenty of life in you yet though my friend. Go get it! :) Thanks again for sharing this. Appreciate it.
Rejoice in your accomplishments. Although I'm a long time runner, I only recently tackled my first half-marathon, winning my age division and running what I consider to be an excellent time. It's all relative in running and reaching for your personal goals is how you keep moving forward.
Lol, I would be able to (maybe!) get to the 10 mile (16 km) point, and then i would for sure have crossed into zone 4😅. But it's a great workout that does'nt drain you all to much. Only 1-3 cm with snow in the Oslo area so far, actually much worse further south in Europe the last week. Snow in both London, Paris, Torino etc🤪
Yes I love that workout. Hopefully next time I can push a little further…! Yes I was really enjoying go the lack of snow but I guess it was always on its way!!
Wow, those 1K's were really fast! Maybe plan for a 10K race to start the new year? That progression run looks fun, I have put it on my to do list 🙏🏻 Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks for the comment!! I wish I could do a 10k but I’d have to head much further south if I wanted to do that. Races are very limited in Canada over the winter!
Running in the snow… it is fast approaching for me as well… will you do much treadmill work during the winter or brave the elements throughout? Take care!
I'm really enjoying following your training. I'm a fellow Calgary runner, and I've already slipped and fallen. (It's hard to tell when there's ice under the snow.) I'm thinking about trying the indoor track at the Olympic Oval. Have you ever run there?
Can relate to the shattered dreams of track sessions as we also got first snow in Finland this week 😂 Any recommendations on shoes/brands that you prefer running on snow?
Ha ha. You can feel my pain! If I’m running only packed snow then I’ll wear spikes. If it’s a mix of snow and pavement then my current favourite shoes (Pegasus turbo) are useless. I’m finding puma shoes have good grip so I’ve been running in those but we’ll see how they stand up to the true cold!
It really does! That all depends on the consistency of surface. If I’m running only on packed snow then I’ll wear spikes. But if it’s a mix of packed snow and bare pavement then the spikes are worse. I’m finding puma shoes have amazing grip but we’ll see if that’s still the case at -30!
Thank you!! This is a good question - this type of mileage would not be for everyone. But I do find that the more mileage I do, the fitter I get and the faster I get. So I’m trying to get a big base. But you’re right, for a lot of people this would be too much mileage for a half…
It looks lovely, but I would not like to run too much in the snow either. Do your feet get very cold and wet, or do you have some kind trail running shoes that protect you from the elements?
They can get quite wet and they definitely can get cold. I usually try and wear some type of gore Tex to keep them dry and protect the toes from the elements.
Are you simply collecting data with the Stryd pod, or actually utilizing power for certain sessions? I don't even display pace anymore on my primary data screen. I'm just more concerned with the quality of the effort. I've been running the Boston course virtually on treadmill on my easy days and it's a mental workout. I jacked up the back of the treadmill so at 0% it's actually 7% decline. And then I have the entire course mapped out in 400m chunks by incline% and proceed to change the incline on the treadmill and the Stryd workout app to match so the power number scales appropriately. Which isn't too bad, but then throwing in alternating paces on top of it makes treadmill running a breeze...the brain is so busy! LOL. I have gained a respect for the first part of the course, the downhills really start to make the quads come alive. And running by power is really tricky downhill since you can't follow it blindly since the same 300W downhill has a higher RPE than 300W on the flats, and 300W uphill is probably the easiest. It's funny...the uphills at Boston give me zero concerns. Hopefully the weather doesn't get too crazy out west so you can continue to train outside at the intensities you want to. Good-luck!
First off, I love your treadmill set up! Such a great idea. Especially now winter is hitting the east coast I imagine? I have the subscription with the Stryd but I have to say I’m currently finding it pretty useless. It has my marathon time at 3:02 and my CP at 270. That’s clearly wrong which means I can’t really trust it.
@@global-runner It's not winter here yet, don't even have frost in the ground yet. Winter is getting later and later here year after year. Your CP is under reported. You have to feed the model to get useful data. I'm assuming you haven't worn the pod for a hard 5k effort, or the classic 3min/12min test protocol. Stryd makes most of it's projections based off CP.
@ I thought that too and then BAM! It arrived with a vengeance! I haven’t worn it for those. I did wear it for my 14 mile progression run and the track sessions I have been doing (including my 10x1k) but it does not seem to be shifting. I also wore it on the treadmill yesterday for 15 minutes at 3:28/km and it still didn’t change.
@@global-runner I wear the pod for every run, since there will be times you put out huge power numbers when you don't intend to which can contribute to your 90day Power Duration Curve. The recommended protocols are either a hard 5k, which can result in a slightly over estimated CP. Or the 3min/12min protocol. Where on 1 day you push a hard continuous 3min effort, 2 days later do a hard continuous 12min effort. That should feed the model enough useful data to get a valid CP. The PDC only takes the last 90days of data into account, and efforts are weighted 0-30day, 31-60day, 61-90day. Meaning once a month you need to test to keep an accurate CP.
Beautiful place to do running
It really is!! (But it’s about to show its dark side!)

Amazing... basically those last 4k in your 10 x 1K sesh were all sub 16 5k pace... no wonder you are happy with it!
That’s right! Hadn’t thought of it like that. Easing into it was a good move!
A great week of running. I love a good progression run !
Progressions runs for the win! :)
Excellent work sir 👍🏽
Thank you!!!

Great progression! Love those myself as I find it really tough to jump straight into a fast thresh type pace. Keep it goin!
Thank you!! I do find that as I get older it’s much easier to run well if you start really slowly…!
Well… I should have waited… you hopped on the treadmill now! Lol😂
Ha ha! I appreciate the double comment!! :)
Hi, enjoying your videos Can you do a video about the gym/stretching/ weights etc that goes with these great weeks of training Thanks (51yrs runner)
That’s a great suggestion! Will do.
Running in the snow… it is fast approaching for me as well… will you do much treadmill work during the winter or brave the elements throughout? Take care!
Thanks for the comment! I run outside as much as I can but any time I want to pick up the pace I’m going to be relegated to the treadmill I think!

Thanks for commenting! I have run there! It’s a decent facility but the opening times are pretty limited unfortunately
The rare time that sign isn’t covered with tourists.
That’s right!!! I think it’s the first time I’ve ever seen it without anyone sat on it!!

That hotel looks epic towering up before the mountains. Canada has some sights! Do you run in your regular shoes in the snow?
It really does!

The miles are hard when running on cold, snowy days, but they forge the best racing on the far side of it. That's my experience anyway.
That’s good to hear! Thanks! I just need to make sure I don’t lose speed or leg turnover. Which I think is what the treadmill is for!
Thats some serious mileage ur building up. Is it necessary for a half? Your HR is just so amazing at these fast paces.
Thank you!! This is a good question - this type of mileage would not be for everyone. But I do find that the more mileage I do, the fitter I get and the faster I get. So I’m trying to get a big base. But you’re right, for a lot of people this would be too much mileage for a half…
@@global-runner Got your point. Just fyi, I so wait for your vids, 1 week wait is too long ... how about posting mid week once ... :D
