Rob: Hey everybody, Rob here at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to be taking a look at the PTC custom fit cabin air filter on our 2018 Chevrolet Colorado. Now a cabin filter is going to do for your car. What a furnace filter does for your house. It's going to filter all the air before it comes through the vents and into the cabin of our truck. And a lot of people don't think about it, but the air inside your truck can actually be up to six times more polluted than the air outside. That's because once we're driving down the road, we have pollen and all the exhausts and emissions and everything else floating around in the air and once it comes in here, it doesn't have anywhere to go.So checking your cabin air filter not only is going to give you healthy fresh air to breathe inside your truck, but it's also going to maintain your HVAC system and make sure that it was working properly because our filter not only is going to collect the small pieces but it's going to grab any larger pieces of debris as well to make sure it doesn't get traveling through the system and cause any kind of issue with a fan or further down with our AC or heating system.
Because if we don't change our filter, it can cause a big pressure buildup, which again can cause damage to the fan or somewhere else down the line. Now, a lot of times you will get offered to get it replaced if you're at the service station, especially if you're just getting an oil change, they check your filters and they can offer you to replace it. Well, that's all fine and well, but it's very simple to replace and even check it, it only takes a few minutes. So I like to keep one of these on hand that way periodically when I'm checking it, if it needs to be replaced, I can.So just so you have the confidence to do it at home, let's go and go through the process together. Again, we have the filter if we need to replace it. So we just set it down.
We want to start by coming to the passenger side and opening up the glove box. Now, if you look inside the glove box in the passenger side, you'll see this little round tab here. There's actually a string attached to it on the outside of the glove box. This little string here, we want to kind of just lift up a little bit and we can slide that tab down. It may be a little bit hard to do it with your fingers, so if you can, you can use a screwdriver, just about really anything, but you want to slide that tab down because you can see the hole in the bottom is a little bit larger and I'll allow it to come out.We give ourselves a little bit of slack by raising the glove box just a bit, then we can kind of slide down and we can let go.
And once you have that tab, you can just kind of let it go. It'll go behind the glove box. Now, if we look on the edges of our glove box, there're little tabs that keep it from coming down all the way. What we want to do is kind of press in on the sides of our glove box so we can squeeze them just enough to allow the glove box to rotate down all the way. It may help if you do one side at a time.
It is a little bit tight, but if you can get one side down, typically you can kind of pry on the other side and get that side just enough to where we can get it to come down.Once you get the glove box loose, we look into the compartment and find this flat cover right here. On each side, we're going to these little tabs, push in. It will now allow us to pull the cover out. Before we pull the filter out. We want to pay attention to where it says the airflow is going. So our arrows are pointing down so you want to make sure that when we put the new filter in place we have the arrows going in the same direction. Usually, you can kind of push it on the center and we can get a hold of the side of the filter and we can pull it out. Now just looking into the filter I can tell that it's pretty dirty, starting to change color, and you see it is catching some larger debris as well. Now the leaves, the filter will catch it pretty well, but it tends to make a lot of noise in the fan so it's a good thing that the filter is catching it. And then we do have a new one, so we can put the new one in place.Putting it in place, it's going to be the same thing. Make sure the arrows are going in the right direction. Slide the filter in, and then just reverse the steps. Before you rotate the glove box all the way back up you do want to grab that string that has the clip on it. Kind of bring it over to the side, rotate it up so the arms click in place. Then we'll wind that tab up and slide it back in place. And that's all there is to it
