I just came from a trip 600miles Georgia and Tennessee with my new 34FT trailer and RAM 1500. Previously i owned a 30FT, so this was a test. I got into steep inclines 6% and 8%. As you said and totally agree, keep your pride off and drive safe. Uphill the truck was doing 50mph in 4th gear, and didn’t need to go faster. Downhill, the tow/haul mode works fantastic it downshift to 4th and one time to 3th, but the downhill was so controlled that i felt always calm. A diesel or a 3/4T truck will do better, but this is what i have and love this truck, and i felt always under control. No issues with a 1500 towing around 8500 pounds. Note that, i have increased tire pressure slightly in the rear, and it made a huge difference in the sway.

Well said, bruh. Everything you said was SPOT ON! I just took my family through Utah, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, and more. I was able to stay safe, thank God. I have a 2012 GMC 3/4 ton pickup with an 8000 lb travel trailer. We took it over the scales and discovered the total weight was 16,620. It was extremely stressful in the mountains, but we made it through. Thank you for the video. Loved seeing your babies in the background. You kept them nice and safe.

Excellent video. I just upgraded my tow vehicle and we went on a short trip (60 miles); on the way back, wind was pretty high. Pulled off to the side several times to let 18 wheelers and other folks go by. Towing a 29.5 trailer with an F150 with Max Tow Package. Making some adjustments to the WDH (new truck sits higher). Just got back from a trip with our 30’ TT (7,500 lb loaded) & Max tow F-150 over the smokies/blue ridge mountains. On all my trips, I prefer to slow down (within safe reason), stick to the right lane, and just let everyone else pass me. Much more relaxing. I once chose to lock out 4th and above for a long steep downhill grade. Boy that engine whined, but barely had to touch the brakes.

I have a 30ft travel trailer that is 9500 lbs gross. I used to tow with a 1/2 ton, on paper, within max limits.
Upgraded to a 3/4 ton, night and day difference. Braking, acceleration, handling all were better.
You talked about anxiety, it’s gone wayyyy down since I have the right set up.
It’s not about going faster, even when you slow down, in a emergency stop or turn, I like knowing that I have the confidence it’s gonna perform properly.

Bravo. I'm a truck driver by trade. My saying has always been learning your vehicle and being aware on the road can be a fun experience. Way too many people like you said it's a pride issue. Let's not for the most important thing is experience. It's not just in RV's, it's the ranchers when hauling live stock. Most of them are bad driver's with no common sense and respect for others on the road. Any one can do this just be mindful of yourself and your vehicle's and others on the road ways.

I'm going to purchase a 28ft imagine. Looks like any brand 1/2 tons gets single digit mpg. 3/4 ton gets better mpg however a slight bit rougher ride and worse mpg not towing. Just thinking about trade offs. Ford is a smooth ride but duramax gets better mpg (rougher ride). Then thinking about better mpg with a diesel vs the higher cost of diesel then adding DEF. Maybe a 3/4 ton Ram gas might be better for both towing and unhooking to see the town. Any suggestions?

If you are not hauling across the United States you don't need to worry about anything! If you are just a weekend occasional camper a half ton would do just fine. I do it as well. Just don't put too much stuff on the bed and you will handle just fine. I never felt unsafe I don't drive more than 4 hour hauling my rig, usually 1 hr away from my destination

I have a Ram 1550, 3.92 rear axle ratio and tow my 284BHS and I want to thank you for this video. My family and I drove this exact route this weekend and I watched your video beforehand as I had never driven with my trailer in the mountains. The tips, advice, and feedback were instrumental, particularly the piece about being calm and not letting your pride get the better of you. Got up and down that first ridge out of Spartansburg with minimal issue. Thank you!!!

Great advice. We tow a 30ft TT with our Ram 1500, we're well within weight limits for towing and payload but it can still create some anxiety which is a real thing that you have to account for.

Hello, I am looking to buy a 23 1500 limited with the 3.92 rear end. They are difficult to find especially in 2X4 but we would like to tow the Jayco White Hawk 26FK. She is a bit nose heavy but well within the limits of the truck. My concern is the length of the trailer. This thing is huge for a half ton. Do you have any experience so far towing something that big? The TT will max out at @8000 lb. Thanks

Great video man. Nicely done. Kids are adorable also. I'm currently towing my Forest River Surveyor 276BHLE (32' long, 7200 lbs fully loaded) with my 2018 Mercedes GLS 450. It's certainly less than ideal and less capable than a half ton truck but as long as I'm not taking it in the mountains and as long as I'm careful, it tows no problem. I'll soon be upgrading to a GMS Sierra 1500 Denali with the 3.0L Duramax so I can tow even more safely and be able to take it up to Lake Tahoe. Still comfortably within my tow limit but I'm getting super close to my payload capacity. The self-leveling air suspension works great on the Mercedes, but if I over work it, something is going to fail eventually and that will be an expensive fix!

Excellent video. Well thought out and informative. I have a Ram 3500 dually and tow a small toy hauler (12,800 gvw) AND A 42 FT 5th wheel (15,500 gvw). As a rule I don't tow above 70, most of the time I'm at 65 (better economy and I believe safer). So far neither of my rigs have been at or even near the max gross weight. I have no desire to push it but I did get a truck rated to tow 30,180 pounds just for peace of mind. Keep up the great work and stay safe!

Awesome info!!! I have a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L X31 10 speed trans with max tow package and tow a 32' Coachman Northern Spirit 2659BH travel trailer. My trailer weighs 7100 and my tongue weight is 900lbs, I run a Weigh Safe True Tow hitch(love it). I put a set of Timbren bump stops and a set of SuperSprings, these improvements definitely helped with stability and sway and a little sag. Just weighed myself last week our combined numbers 13,200. We put 10gal of fresh and averaged 8.7mpg our trip was 400 miles.

Nice video, you’re spot on about towing. I have a very similar setup, 2019 ram 1500 w/ tow package and a Volante 32sb travel trailer, it’s a little heavier and longer than yours, but my 1500 pulls it quite well actually. I did add a Hensley Hitch a few years back and it’s a game changer, my trailer doesn’t budge, it tracks directly behind me, no sway or porpoiseing. The Hensley is a little pricey so I tell people that are looking to get into camping and buy a trailer to figure it into their budget. If I had a 3/4 ton I’d tow the same way I do with a 1/2 ton, my family’s safety is priority, so I keep my speeds reasonable and give plenty of stopping distance. It’s not always about the truck, I had a guy pass me with an F250 towing a trailer smaller than mine and it was swaying so bad other cars swerved away from him. I tell people to tow within their ability. Thanks for the video, I subscribed and I’ll be looking for more!

    • @liveyourfree
      @liveyourfree  3 года назад +1

Thanks for watching. The Ram tows really well and the pulling power is there. You have a nice setup and I've heard that the Hensley hitch/propride hitch is top notch. I had a similar experience with a 1 ton ram pulling a 38ft TT and was swerving all over the place coming back down the mountain with winds gusting near 30mph. All I could do was shake my head. It was dangerous and inconsiderate of others. You're exactly right. People need to tow within their abilities. Thank you for watching and for your support. Happy camping and safe travels my friend!

@@MountainSalsa just be careful to not get too long of a trailer for for the wheelbase of your tow vehicle. That’s another vector not often discussed. Maybe not a hard fast rule. I think etrailer has a wheelbase chart that tells you what the max trailer length ratio should be to the tow vehicle.
I have a 1/2 ton Titan and a 28.5ft travel trailer. I kept telling my wife when we were looking our max was about 26 feet. She kept suggesting 30-34 footers. I was like no way, the truck cannot handle that safely. I went a little over with the 28.5 foot, but all my other numbers are in line. I have a spreadsheet and use the CAT scales on occasion.
With a half ton, I think a combination weight distribution anti sway hitch is a must. Helps with sag and transfers more weight back to the front axle for steering and braking. I also have some heavier duty tires as well with 10 ply and E rated. More suited for a 3/4 or one ton. Only other mod I’m considering is adding some rear air bags to the truck to help with ride comfort.

Great video. We do long hauls with a 2020 Ram 1500 5.7 towing a 28 ft. 5,800 lb. dry travel trailer using an Equilizer hitch. My wife always wants to bring everything imaginable on these trips. The challenge is to bring only what you need. Tire pressure is an obsession and keeping speeds at or under 65 make for safe travels. Thanks for the very well done video. My greatest source of anxiety is towing in January out of Northern Michigan to Florida. The weather window can be short and it's tough to convince my wife that it is worth the wait for good weather.

Great tip about the downhill coasting.
Just tapping your brakes as a preventative measure is crucial.
Not burning up the brakes is something they should teach in high school.
Loosing your brakes going downhill with a 32 ft. trailer behind you is a recipe for disaster.
Thank you for the great tips.

Good video, I down sized from ram 2500 6.7 cummins to ram 1500 3.0 ecodiesel, both with 4 in lift and rear airbags. Pulled the same toy hauler 28ft 7000lbs dry Off course the 3/4 pulled it night and day up the hill down the hill like it was never there. However my ecodiesel pulled it just fine and got 6 mpg more than the 3/4 ton. My ram 1500 was within the numbers of towing capabilities. I was happy with both trucks. I’m very impressed with the ecodiesel. I wasn’t concerned of the driving part, But towards how the 1500 will perform up the hill. Now I know. Also, I’m very happy with my mpg when I’m not towing . California diesel prices ridiculous.
