- Keeping your drain lines clean and your studio plumbing in good condition is essential to keep a happy studio! When I built my studio basement a few years ago, I knew that finding the right solution for a clay trap was key. So, I invested in a GLECO sink trap. It wasn't expensive- about $100 ($125 now) - which in the long run was WAY cheaper than paying a plumber to come out and unclog my pipes! I have been using it for several years now, and have been absolutely pleased with it's operation. I have to clean it out a few times a year, but the process is quite easy. In this video, I show how I drain the line, and empty the trap. The whole thing takes about 2 minutes if you aren't making a video! ;-) GLECO makes 3 sizes of trap packages- the difference being the capacity of the container which collects the sediment. I have the middle size, the GT 43. They also have a 16 oz and 64 oz. I purchased the 43, as I wanted the biggest container which could fit under my sink! They also have some others not as packages listed like a big jumbo one of a few gallons!
Here is an Amazon link to the 64 oz size. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...
I purchased my GLECO trap from my local ceramic supplier:
Cornell Studio Supply out of Dayton. cornellstudiosupply.com/produc...
But, you can also buy them directly from: sinktrap.net/
Or Amazon: amzn.to/3BC9zuN or amzn.to/3mEm9Wn
I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my RUclips channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

Thanks, Karan! I just got one of these installed in my classroom, but I wasn’t there when the plumber came.❤
That's incredibly useful! Thank you so much! 😍

Thank you!
This was very helpful, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
if you pour an ounce or two of vinegar every few days in your sink, there will not be any mold in your trap
kaki bassi - BRILLIANT idea!!! Thanks!!!
Excellent video. I enjoy it very much. Thank you! Sifoutv Pottery
Thank you for a great video. I have never seen it done before and I'm going to purchase one for my sink. Is that the 64 ounce size. How often do you have to change it (assuming you work part-time)?
+Nonni 5 Mine is the 43 ounce one! I honestly only change it about twice a year... but if I were working more consistently, I'd probably do it ever few months! :-)
Where do I get such a big sink? Can you tell me how its called/ how the brand/model is called?
That's a basic utility sink available at any home store here in the US. Lowe's, Home Depot, they are carried about everywhere!
Do you pour the water in the bucket through the trap ?
After I pour off the water from the top- I dump the sludgy clay stuff into my wooded area in my yard. If I didn’t have the area- I could dump in the trash. My objective is the keep it out of the trap!
Do you still use something else to clean off your hands before you wash in the sink, or does it collect all of the clay well enough?
I do pre-wash in/over a bucket in the sink! That collects much, and the Gleco gets stuff that the bucket does not!
@@KaransPotsAndGlass Wow what a quick response. Lol. Thank you. I’m afraid my drains may have some clay in them and I want to make sure that absolutely no more clay gets in there.
@@micheledickey4066 I felt the exact same way before I bought my trap!!
I didn't know how to clean this thing and it's been over a month. When I say the smell knocked me on my ass...
Lol- yes- that anaerobic bacteria can really stink!!!!
This is a grease trap, oh no ?
I have zero experience with anything that could be called a grease trap- so I can’t answer that. I’d be surprised if it is though, as I thought grease didn’t usually settle in water, but floated?
