- On this Monday’s episode of ‘The Old Man and the Three Things,’ JJ Redick is joined once again by Nekias Duncan and Steve Jones Jr. of The Dunker Spot. This week they discuss where’s the New York Knicks land in the Eastern Conference playoff picture and if Jalen Brunson is a top-10 player in the NBA this season, what first round playoff matchups with the possible play-in teams could lead to an upset, and if the Boston Celtics will have any weaknesses come the start of the postseason. The Knicks are 42-4 when establishing at least a 10-point lead, which is insane in today's NBA. This is only possible due to Brunson's ability to control the pace of the game. Brunson also leads the league since January 1st in plus-minus at +436 (Tatum is No. 2 at + 389).

@@Carmelo-dame.time-Anthony nah raul is right, brunson is not only fighitng his sub-par teammates but a horrific coach, thibideau (knicks coach) has been known to over play his players and generally not liked by his team or peers in the nba.

Jokic, Giannis, Embiid, Luka, Kawhi, LeBron, Shai, KD, Steph, Tatum. That's just off the dome. All arguably better than Brunson, imo. Not to mention Dame, Book, Haliburton, Ant, AD, Jaylen Brown... There's a LOT of great players right now. Brunson is definitely one of them. I'm just not sure he's top 10.
Hartenstein has been an unsung hero for the Knicks in my opinion. With Randle and OG out, genuinely believe he’s the Knicks’ 2nd best player

Yes Jalen Brunson is a top 10 player why is this a question? Do people understand how hard it is to carry a franchise on their back? Not only that but to carry a franchise to the playoffs? Just look at how tough it is for a guy like Luka to get a top spot in the standings so for a smaller guard to do it should not be understated. Jalen Brunson to me has been the best point guard in the league this year and that’s over names like Kyrie, Dame, and Steph.
Jalen Brunson has had a great season. He has not had a better season as a point guard than Luka Doncic.

@@pipohemm8726 Nah, SGA has slowed down at the end of the season, Brunson hasn’t and he’s carried a heavier load. (Pause) Brunson is better and more impactful than SGA. He’s also proven in the playoffs when it matters most 2 seasons in a row, raising his level of play. Shai hasn’t proven that yet.
@@Ssjiskkidjj Shai will finish top 3 in mvp voting on a 55 win team. He is better defensively, more versatile and scoring over 30 again. Brunson is great but Shai is a lock for 1st team all nba along with Luka at guard
Jalen Brunson is absolutely a top 10-15 player this year. He is top 4 in scoring, top 5 in plus/minus, second in 40 points games, 2nd in drawn charges, 12th in assists and, that why being heavily blitzed. He has so much on his shoulders and, he continues to produce. The funny part is the Knicks roster doesn't have elite spacing around him. In the off-season I would love to see the Knicks go and add some more size around Brunson. What Jalen Brunson is doing is remarkable and, he continues to prove that he is one of the best guards in the NBA

@@joshkatsikis9138 I don't know how likely this would be because of Danny Ainge but, if I am the Knicks the player I would go after first would be Lauri Markkanen. He is a good defender, he is one of the best catch and, shoot players in the league and, he can play make. Other names would be Brandon Ingram, Mikal Bridges and, Herb Jones. All of those players fit the Knicks perfectly. If I was the Knicks I would try to get another wing or, a center but, I personally like the Knicks centers.

Jalen Brunson has the footwork of Jesus
Absolutely he’s top 10. The Knicks have been without 3 starters for most of the season including their second best player. He is that entire offense and they double him and blitz him all game and he still goes off for 35 on most nights. I’m not sure I can think of any players who could have carried this Knicks team to tied for 3rd(1 game behind the 2 seed) in the East besides Brunson.
Crazy to believe he’s not in conversation for mvp. Obviously not number one but in convo. Atleast top 5. At his height and what he’s doing like you said without 3 starters majority of the season is crazy impressive.
Yet you have Devin Booker in the MVP race and JB has been a better player than him all year and carrying this team and no love. JB is 2nd in charges drawn, #4 in scoring and top 5 in plus minus.

Jalen Brunson has absolutely been a top ten player this season. He’s the driving force behind a 46-32 team which has been top 10 all season long. For those of you saying the east is weak and and they wouldn’t make the playoffs in the west consider the fact that the Knicks have beat 7 of the 10 playoff teams out west. Not to mention the Knicks have been missing their 2nd best player who was averaging 24pts 9rbs 5ast for the final 36 games.
He is a superstar now

I just don’t understand how my man Brunson not even in the talks for mvp. This team got the most injuries out of every team in the nba . And still managed to be in the 4th seEd. They lost Randle a 24 and 10 guy and still managing to give ppl a run for there money.
Looking at this season Brunson is 3rd best PG in the league behind Shai and Luka.
He’s been better than Maxey, Hali, Trae, etc. that’s no shade at these guys. They’re all great and may become better. I could see Hali reaching higher ceiling for example.
Consider the following:
His scoring, significantly improved passing and defense and leading his team without Randle, OG and Mitchie for large part in 2024.

Steve making me feel better about my 76ers pick to win the East lol (made at the start of the season) The offseason moves were good, coaching is much better, but the roster is a bit thin outside the starters. How far theygo is almost entirely dependant on Embiid, who has no one to blame now that Ben and Harden are gone. But i think if Maxey balls and Embiid doesnt drop off, they can still make my pick come true 🤞

Brunson is a Top 5 MVP Candidate. He's not going to win because of Luka and Jokic but should get some MVP votes by the end of the year
The way he controls the pace is very Luka-esque. And he’s much shorter too, making it more impressive. I’m curious how high his floater shot percentage is.
I’ve always said he plays just like a smaller version of Luka the passing just isn’t as great but the way they get to their spots and buckets are very similar. You can tell they were going at it in Dallas…. You know iron sharpens iron!

First time I can remember where 3/4 games lest, in the east, seeds 2-8 are all in the running for seed 2/3. In the west, seeds 1-3 can get seed 1, seeds 2-4 can get seed 2, and from seeds 5-10 anything can happen. Its still possible for the 10 seed to get the 6 seed in the west.
Jalen is top 10 easily. There’s not 10 more players who are more impactful than him in this league. ESPECIALLY when it comes to playoff time. 💯 Jalen is currently the 2nd best guard in the entire league besides Luka.
I love Jalen and would be inclined to agree but i think you could argue anywhere from 7 to like 15. Luka Giannis Jokic Embiid Tatum are basically locked in above him and then guys like AD SGA Ant kawhi jimmy all play a bigger roles on defense then there’s still bron kd booker Steph

Brunson is also doing it for the New York knicks.. more pressure playing there then most places in the world forget just the nba and the spotlight/fans are different… when is the last player that has been able to do that for the knicks, especially what he is doing… that tells u everything u need to know right there about JB

A few weeks ago, I said Jalen was #10-15.
But in the last few weeks he has entered the top 10. He is top 10 in most of the advanced metrics I follow PER, VORP, and BPM. And in win shares/48min, which seems biased towards big men, he is behind only two guards: SGA and Luka.
Also, I’m watching him play and he passes the eye test. He is top 10, and big perk, and Sir Charles agree.

About New York, without Julius Randle they can’t expect Jaylen Bronson to sustain this level of usage and expect him to carry the team offensively, taking +30 FGA in several seven game series where their opponents will be well prepare to defend him. If he does he guarantees himself a top 8-10 place in NBA.

Hes FOR SURE top 10 in the league, be mindful that since the all star game 60% of the starting 5 of the knicks were injured and he carried the team on his back id like to see if other teams would be able to hold it down with theyre supporting cast injured like that I highly doubt it.. hes 4th in the entire NBA in scoring. Hes Top 5 hands down
Brunson is a top guy but NYK have only a chance when the rest of the team is healthy - especially OG (now you can see that he's playing despite injury and it has an impact on his playing). Basing whole game on performance of the one player is always a risk, especially in teams with no rotation who have whole RS in their legs. Wish them all the best but it is very unlikely that they (or he) will be albe to stay fresh and ready during the PO intensity.

Brunson literally owns curry in every statistical category. Haliburton and Edwards Arent even in same vicinity, and the same goes for kawhi and lebron. David is hard to judge since he is playing a different position, but his team is barely a play-in team while brunson is carrying the very injured 3 seed
I believe Jalen Brunson is a top 10 player right now. I also believe he should make 1st Team All NBA. Shai is getting the other guard spot and Jalen is having a better year than Steph. Luka is actually a 3 so that shouldn’t have any effect on making first team.

Everyone who looks at Knicks stats pre RJ/IQ/OG trade are missing that the Knicks are a completely diff team without RJ... the stats and losses are a misleading af like we would be 2nd maybe even 1st seed easily if you're looking at the team since we got OG. Defense is insanely better (and throw healthy Mitch in you have two of the best defenders in the league.)
I’m a Knicks fan and we had no chance of catching Boston this year. If we were full healthy though this year I liked our chances in the playoffs against them
@@cam8868 as a Knicks fan... our defense is the best in the league when we're fully healthy. We consistently lost to Boston due to a lack of depth and someone to guard JT. But fully healthy we are right there with them sorry not sorry. And love Thibs but someone has to talk to him abt rotations for real
