  • Loop Duodenal Switch Info Video. For more information contact www.bmiut.com. This video explains how the loop duodenal switch (SIPS procedure) or the modified duodenal switch is preformed. In the first part of the procedure a gastric sleeve is created. Then this sleeve is connected to the small bowel between the pyloric valve and common bile and pancreatic ducts. Three meters of small bowel is used to avoid the diarrhea complaints and some of the malnutrition issues associated with the older style duodenal switch. The loop duodenal switch helps improve satisfaction and lessens hunger in two ways. Removal of part of the stomach takes away major hunger hormones and food entering the lower small bowel stimulates cells that regulate hunger and food satisfaction.

I had RNY Gastric bypass 2 months ago and I'm not happy with the result of surgery because before surgery I was 76 kg and reason I have surgery because I can't control my Type 2 diabetic.Even I'm still in liquid diet my blood sugar levels going sometime 13
I believe Duodenal switch can give better results.Do I have any chance to get my gastric bypass to duodenal switch?

Hi FoxSonia, I started SADI-S in Spain in May 2007 as a modification and simplification of the duodenal switch, the operation I used to perform most frequently. I have operated approximately 230 patients, and 130 have a follow up of 5 years or more. Weight loss is similar to that obtained after the standard duodenal switch, but the operation is simpler, quicker to perform and there is a lower number of secondary effects due to malabsorption.

    Hello there
How much malobsarbation does the sadi s on 100 grams protein 100 grams complex carb 100 fat? And does it last for the long period?

Çağla Gedik there is about 65% fat malabsorption and we believe protein and carbs are completely absorbed. It does not stop or change.

Why dont they remove the unused small intestine? Is it just in case they need to reverse the procedure?

    • @BMIutah

The unused small intestine is important with weight loss because of the hormones absorbed in the unused small intestine help with decreasing hunger.

Is this better than the sleeve?

Keshia Y The best answer for this is to come in and meet with a surgeon to discuss. This answer is different for every patient depending on their situation. We can be reached at 801-746-2885. Thanks.

How come nobody ever talks about this procedure? The only one I've ever heard of is sleeve or bypass, lap band!

lanika sardin This is a fairly new procedure. Dr. Cottam has been doing them since 2013 but he was the first to do them in the US. Since then he has and continues to train surgeons all over the country. The procedure has a 300% lower complication rate than the gastric bypass with better long term weight loss and better diabetes resolution. This is an exciting change but it takes time to get doctors to change what they are doing.

One of the things my surgeon told me is that even the full Duedenal switch surgery was rarely done because it is a very complicated, expensive, and time consuming surgery, most surgeons don't want to take the time that this surgery takes to do it perfectly. The other problem is that up until recently there has been no medical code in the insurance code book for this surgery. Insurance companies will initially approve it but then when it comes time to bill there is no code so it gets caught up in Bureaucratic BS.

@@claragalvez2518 there is a code now and has been a good awhile.
