When they talk about self-sufficiency, they're not talking about oxygen, water or food. Those things are easy to produce. They're talking Mars having the industrial capacity to mine its own rare elements and produce its electronics without relying on industrial or electronic supplies from Earth. Mars needs to be able to repair and produce all industrial equipment independently to be truly self-sufficient, and that's why they say it'd need about 1 million people.
The fact that we're discussing it without first solving the problems on Earth is more frightening than anything. Let's make sure we're all taken care of first before letting wealth hoarders play astronaut colonizers for essentially no practical reason. For anyone who says something along these lines *We should help Earth instead of going to space* The problem isn't money, we have more than enough, but you get diminishing returns at some point. And I'd argue we largely have the technology needed. Further utilization would lead to more development and innovation. So that's not the problem either. The problem is the lack of long-term policy, and an economically viable plan. It wouldn't matter if we strip out the entire space program, because that wouldn't help anything. Colonizing space isn't mutually exclusive with reducing our impact on Earth, we can - and most likely will - do both. Now all of this happens while giving nasa the scraps of the plate (in terms of money) we should really be putting more money into the space industry to find ways to make more new products boosting the economy and getting poverdised people help from this tech not the other way around
I agree and there is also a bigger picture...If humanity doesn't make a concerted effort to spread beyond our solar system, the Voyager and Pioneer spacecraft might one day be the only evidence we ever existed. The sun is going to roast the Earth (and probably Mars) then vaporise it. It might be over a billion years away, but even that might not be enough time for us to succeed. A self sustaining colony on Mars would just be a tiny step, sorta like the first multicellular life on Earth on the way to becoming humans.
@@rea280 Yeah. Ironically to some people, a number of the technologies needed to settle space could be used down here, and vice versa - a positive feedback loop. If you want to settle another planet, you need to be incredibly sustainable. As an example: Food needs to be grown as efficiently as possible. You don't have a lot of room, and resupply takes a couple years - so hydro/aqua/aeroponics and vertical farms would all be required in space, but also be incredibly useful on Earth, as deforestation is a problem, and Agriculture contributes a lot to that. And all those ways of growing food greatly reduces your footprint, and even water usage. That's just one example. Energy storage, solar, nuclear, water purification, recycling, new mining/manufacturing practices that don't require fossil fuels, and more are all required in space, and could also be used down here. So that kind of development would spur innovation on both fronts.

i don't get why some people say first we need to solve earth problems, thinking about space or mars is irrelevant, if science were to stop for every single problem on earth we would probably still not be able to fly, thats one thing about science always moves forward, even when there is war, in fact when there is war science advances even more, so grateful for those minds who think different and really try to move us forward, since our beginnings there have always been struggle. colonizing mars probably seems crazy right now but like Elon Musk says first we need to established the possibility that can be done. the environment is harsh and not for us at all, but think about it, if you go to a really cold place naked you freeze to death, you need a jacket and other clothing, you need technology, just like in Mars, but we are scratching the surface of what is possible there.
Agreed because if that was the problem then things like drinking and gambling and other unnecessary activities would be stopped and that money would be used to help the planet
My question is why they want to live in another planet using such teachnology but having nothing! Why they don't use this teachnology to build the same here on Earth having so many deserts? Many people in Africa will be thankful. At least water is not that far here.
That's true and we need entrepreneurs and non corrupt leaders to help guide everyone, One of the problems on earth is that people do as they please and the law has to be there to stop them and currently there is so much wrong-doing but that is because the population is so huge or a government is under-developed or simply not as strong. A larger population will be harder to maintain unless that population understands the concepts of a good balance and peace and how important everything truly is.
An asteroid passed between the moon and the earth recently and we did not know until two days after it happened. Makes you wonder if they know something, like trajectory of an asetorid to possibly hit earth in 100 years or something.
Meanwhile in 2100 Sam: hey Bob wanna come over to my place on mars? Bob: yea sure, can I invite the other bois on Venus, earth and titan? Sam: yup Bob: righteousss
Mars is too small for a proper atmosphere. CO2 levels were pretty high on Earth pre life also, but the atmosphere was thick, so water vapor stayed around. Artificially produced Oxygen would work, but supply has to be replenished as has that of water. Mars is unsustainable and can not just be brought beyond a tipping point and then work as Earth,
Politically I would wonder how this would work though. What country would they be associated with? How are they going to enforce laws etc? Will there be a tax for the people on Mars going back to Earth? I feel like that just like past colonization, Mars would eventually break away from Earth when the colony becomes big enough, and would most likely end up overtaking earth hundreds of years in the future. (Earth will never be united, Mars most likely would be a single planetary government as by then most of the adults living there would never of visited Earth and wouldn't associate themselves with the nations that they came from)
Lines are already drawn, the EU, U.S, Canada, Japan, Australia will create a colony, Russia has dropped out of the Artemis program and is going to the moon with China. Right now the U.S is building two rockets that can get to mars and three that can get to the moon.
"most of the adults living there would never of visited Earth and wouldn't associate themselves with the nations that they came from" Or they might say, we are not your experimental human beings, we want to live in our natural world - Earth. @@alexman8800 you are saying migration is a myth and people never settle elsewhere and then raise their kids in their new home? and that if that were to ever happen that most kids would want to go back to where their parents came from?
I think underground colony is the way to go, it's relatively easy and it has so many advantage . Nuclear will be the best deal but the trouble will be to fuel for it... The biggest trouble will be the gravity, it's less than eart so this will cause trouble in a medium timeline.
Our biggest trouble won't be the gravity. It is up there, but it is no where near close the biggest problem. The biggest problem is Mars magnetosphere. Since it has a weak magnetosphere people won't be able to terraform the planet because space and solar storms would destroy everything and throw it all into space. The most viable housing option for a big colony on Mars right now is a pressurized glass dome. There will be nothing else better then that unless we can learn to change Mars magnetosphere or atleast protect Mars from the solar storms. If we can do that then terraforming is possible. Again, just like you said after we can solve the Magnetosphere option which we have no Idea of how to yet then we can focus on the gravity problem, but we can't change the gravity on the Red planet because we'd need to increase the Planets size by a huge amount. However, that problem of gravity could be easily fixed if they put a rule to exercise for a few hours, or you went in depressurized buildings a lot.
This is the new frontier, and I feel like human beings have been missing the frontier for quite some time. We need our towns and cities obviously. We need civilization, but I feel like we also need that sense of expanding-of claiming, mapping, exploring, and taming new lands. It’s a part of us, and we’ve been away. We’ve been away for far too long.
you are correct.we need that kinda attitude to move forward.Ambition was one of the key reasons for the rapid dominance of our species on planet earth.
I'd still be worried for a possible seal break or hull breach. Also, virus/bacteria/disease spread in these small confined colonies... Will probably need the mindset of elves or monks to survive out there lol
Evolution has made us fit for planet Earth. We have a hard time being cooped up in our homes during the corona epidemic. How long do you think we can live in a bubble on another planet?
In a way itd be different tho, like wed be in a bubble but itd be big enough to have space for everyone. Plus we'd acrually be able to go out and do things/be around other people (which is the main problem about the pandemic, no one cares about staying home. But it gets hard when there's no actual human contact apart from who your quarantined with for multiple months on end) so I don't think itd be much issue
The people having trouble staying cooped up wont be going to mars they already are troublesome here, the people that go will be willing and capable going through many psychological tests to make sure they can.
@@EscapeCondition It's a dumb argument. Space programs have brought us near instantaneous worldwide communication and navigation. If you think that's not worth the cost we've put into space, you haven't understood the numbers.

So we want to be based on the equator for more consistent day lengths for the solar power and for the temperature better for humans, but we also want to be at the poles to get the best supply of water. Tricky
Perhaps first colony established at frozen pole? If successful, next a little closer to the equator, but still close enough to each other? Or maybe set up mining drones and a plant at the pole, and transport the water via drone to a first colony at the equator? Many possible options.
When you talk about a one million person colony being self sufficient, you should qualify it. Yes they would need to produce all the bulk supplies such as air, water, water and fuel. But they would not be able to produce some things like advanced microchips. Just running the fab line would be hard, when you add in the supply chain needed, a million people is not even close I can see all the people rushing to say that all the companies that supply the fab don't need that many people. But each of those companies need specialized supplies that have to come from somewhere. This repeats for several levels before you have a complete system that does not need imports from Earth. Just producing basic office and home supplies is going to be a big strain on the colony.
Keep in mind that computer chips are light and small. You could ship hundreds of thousands in one trip. But if local production was deemed to be important enough, the colonists could develop their own home grown electronics based on tech that cannot compete with silicon on earth. An example would be 3D printed conductive plastic electronics. It would be slow and bulky compared to earth tech but if there was enough demand I think it could be done.
@@VictorGallagherCarvings yes. Hard to produce items that are small or only a few are required will still need to be imported. This is reasonable and what I expect to happen. My issue is that calling the colony self sufficient will lead some people to think that this is all that is needed for a backup home for humanity in case something happens to Earth. Given the harsh conditions on Mars, it will take many colonies of this size to be truly independent of Earth.
As many SciFi shows/movies as I've seen in my lifetime, I can't believe that I never even conceived of the idea of using/building a dome(s) on Mars. Now that I've heard him say it, and seen the pictures of the idea, I'm wondering about some things. Would the dome(s) be something that would solely be for allowing building structures and possibly plant based life to exist on the surface rather than having to be buried under rock and sand, and the plants be restricted inside of those buried structures? Or, would these dome(s) be built in such a way that they would be So protective that humans could actually take the risk of walking around openly on the surface without the use of Any protective space suit or breathing apparatus whatsoever. These two concepts are Vastly different from one another and would make a Huge difference to me. If it was the latter, then I am Way more excited at the prospect of colonizing Mars than I Ever was previously. It's one thing to have to live in buried shelters for hundreds or more likely closer to one hundred thousand years while working out how to properly Terraform Mars. But, if while we were working out the logistics of it, we were able to build smaller scale city-like domed structures that were suitable for human life, And work out a way around that pesky 1/3 Earth's gravity, then the idea of starting colonies on Mars has suddenly become much Much more appealing to me!
@@bibblethealien1018 well, technically, if your dome was large enough (10km diameter, 2km tall at least) and had 1 bar atmospheric pressure, then at the surface the atmosphere in the dome, combined with the material of the dome itself, would adequately protect from radiation.

i don't get why some people say first we need to solve earth problems, thinking about space or mars is irrelevant, if science were to stop for every single problem on earth we would probably still not be able to fly, thats one thing about science always moves forward, even when there is war, in fact when there is war science advances even more, so grateful for those minds who think different and really try to move us forward, since our beginnings there have always been struggle. colonizing mars probably seems crazy right now but like Elon Musk says first we need to established the possibility that can be done. the environment is harsh and not for us at all, but think about it, if you go to a really cold place naked you freeze to death, you need a jacket and other clothing, you need technology, just like in Mars, but we are scratching the surface of what is possible there.
Sure let’s keep trashing earth so we have to leave

People that think they are going to get earth's problems solved are delusional.

They have an experiment that lichen would likely survive on Mars at least for a little while, so we could start there.
Nicholas Johnston: "we would need a machine capable of sucking co2 etc."
Tree: "Am I a joke to you?"
The actual problem is the atmospheric density. Plants would suffocate due to how little carbon dioxide is actually there.

InventorZahran 327 - burning oil and wood is not easy on mars...
even if we can restore its atmosphere it would slowly degrade away
The whole reason why Mars doesnt have much of an atmosphere in the first place is cuz it has a very weak magnetic field, which made its atmosphere exposed to solar winds and over time it became very thin as it is today. The reason why this doesnt happen to Earth is because we have a strong enough magnetic field that prevents the solar winds from damaging the atmosphere.

Perhaps first colony established at frozen pole? If successful, next a little closer to the equator, but still close enough to each other? Or maybe set up mining drones and a plant at the pole, and transport the water via drone to a first colony at the equator? Many possible options.
I can’t wait to be apart of the Mars master race
I was relieved to see that lots of single-use gloves and plastic containers are part of the plan.
When you talk about a one million person colony being self sufficient, you should qualify it. Yes they would need to produce all the bulk supplies such as air, water, water and fuel. But they would not be able to produce some things like advanced microchips. Just running the fab line would be hard, when you add in the supply chain needed, a million people is not even close
I can see all the people rushing to say that all the companies that supply the fab don't need that many people.
If I ever get to visit mars I will look around for the Curiosity rover
I'm still staying on earth.
Mars has no natural EM shielding. That's why it's a dead world. Better off terraforming Venus . But no one ever wants to have that discussion
@@bibblethealien1018 well, technically, if your dome was large enough (10km diameter, 2km tall at least) and had 1 bar atmospheric pressure, then at the surface the atmosphere in the dome, combined with the material of the dome itself, would adequately protect from radiation.
Curiosity stream is marvelous!!
One issue not discussed is nitrogen. How do we gdt the needed amount of nitrogen in the atmosphere. Its way easier to turn carbon dioxide into oxygen than it is to get nitrogen on mars.

Also rabbits. Let them run around in the dome no problem. I think we will only succeed in space if we prioritize normalcy. pooping on suction tube on the ISS is definitely not the way.
imagine trying to live on a dead rock instead of caring for what we have
1:53 "Highs of 35 celcius in the summer on the equator"
What is meant by that sentence? because the day of the Martian "fall" and "spring" will be the day that gives the equator the most powerful solar radiation across an entire Martian year. As it also does on Earth.
tropical temps :D
Normal person here. The Mars Rover can bring me my beer. Damn! I'm on the first flight out. Yesss!
The rover is huge though. Itd be like having a vw van as a roomba
Mars looks really good right now!
What do you call a someone born on Mars who's a Hitman?

If earthlings got over their emotions and greed we could colonize mars in 10 years. But its all about money, propaganda and power 😂
@Laviath the only thing elon musk is doing is getting fatter
Aaron that was aspirational but pretty they’ll at-least make the late 2024(supply) and the early 2027(manned) windows instead.
Mars Starcruiser still less than a decade
Laviath 6 is a push but yeh it’s possible
In any political/economic system, incentive's are what really drives people. Would you work 60hrs a week for free for 20 years to achieve this?
Once we start mining the solar system, or a big asteroid comes on the radar, watch the people mobilise.
I like your narration very clear and easy to understand and direct to the point.
Thanks for mentioning the plant based aspect - its often left out in favour of the tech.
In order to live efficiently and healthily on Mars, we'll all need to be vegan. In fact, I think life on Mars will provide the blue print of how to live effectively here on earth.
They did not mention fish farming, they tried fish farming on the ISS as well, we may also see chickens moved there, not to eat but to lay eggs.
This is the only channel which ACTUALLY says that we can leave a thumbs down. Bravo.
Shut up
I will be the 1st Martian Millionaire when I control the furniture industry on Mars with my bamboo and rattan farms. All wicker furniture, all the time, only on Mars!
this is weird had a dream i was living in a dome on some moon in space like 2 days ago
You might wanna check those meds your wife is giving you to help you sleep.
I once dreamed living in a dome too. It was so strange but nice at the same time i remember that emotion each time i see a video like this hehe. Idk maybe our minds are always working in possibilities and alternative ways of living

Space case

Then you already knew about it, and you were subcounciously looking at this video to try to recreate your dream scenario, and that's when you realized this was what you were doing.
