On 6 August 2011, a U.S. CH-47D Chinook military helicopter operating with the call sign Extortion 17 (pronounced "one-seven") was shot down while transporting a Quick Reaction Force attempting to reinforce a Joint Special Operations Command unit of the 75th Ranger Regiment in the Tangi Valley in Maidan Wardak province, southwest of Kabul, Afghanistan.

The pilot, listed as CWO David Carter, was a CW4 and posthumously promoted to CW5. He's one of the Colorado Army National Guard's most famous pilots and they later named their aviation support facility on Buckley Space Force Base after him.
Worked with him for many years with the Colorado Army National Guard at the old and then new Army Aviation Support Facility. RIP ☕

There are a couple of inaccuracies in this video but it is mostly accurate. The Apaches were performing high/low cover for the Chinook. The RPG was fired from a house with a 2nd story structure. The apaches could not fire directly into the structure to prevent killing women or children without clearance. They did actually fire in the vicinity of the structure after the fact but there were no targets in the area of their fire. The squirters who were moving north from the building where the HVI was assumed to be could not have gotten that far to the north to have engaged the Chinook. This was more like just a place where a couple of bad guys happened to be at. There were at least two RPGs fired and the second one hit an aft rotor blade causing about 10 feet of blade to be severed and the imbalance was so severe that it caused the aft pylon of the Chinook to become severed from the aircraft. The aircraft spun to the left and fell vertically from about 100 feet to impact relatively level but slightly nose down as I recall. The spin was fast enough to cause some passengers to be slung out of the ramp area. That is the way it was.
The idea that a D model should not have been used is nonsense. For that mission the D model was more than capable. The weather was fine, the aircraft was GPS equipped, and it was a simple insertion mission. The LZ was even lit up by a IR light provided by C-130. The Chinook was at about 50 knots and 100’ when hit. But it was on approach and slowing for landing as any helicopter would. It was just a very unfortunate, sad night that will never be forgotten.

I know what to say & what not to say so I'm not sure what happened. All I did was offer my opinion but It seems we are on the same page about what happened. I'm still wondering why the black box wasn't found & why the Afghan's deboarded preflight. There are many, many red flags.

Just a fyi Jesse Pittman is not from Ukiah. He’s from willits California! Our bypass bridge around the town is actually dedicated to him and five seals put their tridents on a post at the bridge that is protected. You see it going by every time on east side of bypass bridge

You have one of the most accurate recreations of this event, but there are still a few inaccuracies, the rear rotor mast was NOT the point of impact, the second RPG hit midship separating the drive shafts, both rotor assemblies were found intact and undamaged.
But in all, you have a very good retelling of this incident. RLTW

Biggest cover up ive ever looked into...and I just started, These are some of the facts we now know, there was a major gunfight on that bird , and they found SEALS that had been shot several times, The Army threw away the bullets , and had the bodies cremated , and lied to the families and told them nobody was recognizable, they first said there was no black-box, until the person who put the black box in came forward, then they said the box washed away in a landslide , I found this out today and I'm research it until I know the truth.
The Chopper appeared to be hit by ordinance from the outside when it was struck the second time.
The bullet holes were from rounds cooking off after the crash. Did an Afghan betray the team? Maybe. But there was no firefight onboard.

This video looks nice but does not have the same information as the book. The Afghans on board extortion 17 were switched out at the last minute and were NOT the same ones listed on the manifest. Why not and who were they really? The chinook kept hovering repeatedly without any forward movement and several strange radio calls made by the pilot. According to the book, the RPG was not fired from 220 meters, it was a lot closer and nearly underneath the helicopter. An unknown force arrived at the crash site "surveyed the area" and departed before the Rangers showed up. The black box was not recovered by the rangers making one wonder if the unknown force took it. Some of the bodies had bullets in them making one wonder if the Afghans were trying to kill or capture the SEALS. All the bodies were cremated even though some of them had NOT been burned. WORST of all, the memorial ceremony was presided over by a Muslim cleric even though NONE of the SEALS were Muslim and the cleric praised the Afghans and defamed the SEALS . The entire thing stinks of a cover up by the US government who was presided over at the time by our former Muslim president barrack obama. All the SEALS were from the team that killed osama bin laden. They were the BEST of the best and deserved MUCH MUCH more REST IN PEACE.

@Shawn Thomas Brown No, it's not false and incorrect. There were several cases where US troops landed too close to the objective when being inserted and got compromised. The same thing happened during operation Red Wings. Show me one example of the same thing happening to the SAS or SBS in Afghanistan.
