- Dragon Ball Z is known for it's iconic fights, but today we are going to be going over the underrated storytelling that each arc features. Hopefully with this video, DBZ can be more respected in the anime community.

The storytelling in Dragon Ball Z is amazing and slept on mainly because many people think DBZ is just fighting and screaming due to many people only watching it as RUclips clips.

I’ll say this I ignored the db anime for years due to me thinking it was mid because of all the negative things people would say when I’ll say that I will give it a try but I finally decided to watch it and find out for myself and db become my favorite anime of all time naruto used to be my favorite but now it’s db I still love both shows they are my top two favorite shows I’m also in the process of rewatching db again for my self I loved OGDB and DBZ those are my favorite by far and your right about everything you said but Naruto and DB will always hold a special place in my heart
I sleep on it because I’ve seen the story more times than I’ve seen my own ass. It’s literally the first story I’ve followed as a kid.

Yeh I feel like Goku accepting his race and who he rlly is is an underrated part of his development
I do agree, i do wish that they would explore the horrible nature of Saiyan's more. They do some, but a lot of times when they mention the saiyans, it's just as a warrior race rather than genocidal maniacs which quite a few were haha. Just feel that would deepen things more but diving into that more seriously
What’re we talking about, Goku practically accepted being a saiyan as far back as when he started training with North Kai

And like he was still disgusted with the sayain race up until the end of the vegeta fight, literally neglecting vegeta asking him to join them. And he still didn’t even fully accept them on namek when he first arrived. Saying “I’m a sayain from earth, or so I’m told”. Literally no evidence of him fully accepting his race prior to the frieza fight ur jus waffling lol
@@verasebfair point, but regardless I think the main focus was the mindset of a sayain, which unlocks their full potential if we’re talking about hard work, resilience rigor etc

@@Kakaragi it’s only people like you who care about canon. Look, there is no cannon in dragon ball there was never a mention of canon. What is canonical and what is it is decided by whoever’s watching the show. Also, you wanna get technical the Bardock special was canon as in the manga before Goku fights Frieza the latter get the flashback to the OG Bardock and remembers how he resisted him to the very end.
Z is the best of the franchise when it comes to storytelling.It's sad that most fans of the series downplay the story of Z
When I was a kid I only knew about dragon ball z threw my cousin playing bodikai tenkaich 2 and even though I noticed how serious the situation was the only thing that got me was how terrifying the main villains were (especially Broly who i thought was called the legendary super satan) and that I was scared everything my cousin thought them (I was only 8 at the time) but then I officially got into db when I turned 17 after my best friend got into the series, and I must say despite the fights I was more interested in the character development and the saiyan transformations, it's ironic that I got into the series just before dbsuper came out
The Saiyan and Frieza Sagas will always and forever be the best sagas of Dragon Ball and is peak DBZ. It's the pinnacle balance of storytelling and action. The Cell Saga dug itself in a hole with the convulted plot points and retcons that really prevents it from being the best with Ssj2 Gohan really carrying the arc hard
The Buu Saga is by far where the story is at its weakest and really falls short heavily relying on the cool action

Disagree about the cell saga lol. Plot points weren’t rlly contradictory or anything. All added up to the overall theme and ending pretty much
Like it flowed well (at least in the manga didn’t watch the anime version) and at least imo succeeded in the complex plot directions it looked to take, in the time travel and how the motives and events leading up to the climax of the arc related to the previous DB arcs. Like red ribbon army, trunks and cell, how they all were involved up to previous timelines that altered the present the Z fighters were all in. I thought the complicated aspect of it was cool, while having great build up and pay off with the conflicts and probably the best character development moments along with the namek saga in the entire series
Last thing I’ll bring up is the fact that it had a lot of plot twists were unpredictable, but not in the way where they came outta nowhere or veered off the overall themes of the saga. The big plot twists all either involved androids, time travel and timelines, red ribbon, and super sayains. Which were all the big themes introduced at the beginning of the saga. It never brought up any new themes in the middle that I can think of. I don’t think it’s as good as the namek arc but I think it’s an incredible arc either way
Boo saga was peak db with it going back to its roots with Toriyama’s gags.
The build up, plot twists, and the thriller of cell saga is amazing

Not only that but the stakes were high, most of the heroes have been Destroyed, the supporting casts were murdered by being eaten alive, the entire earth inhabitants had been massacred and our dear planet earth had been destroyed, the last surviving heroes were being overwhelmed. Honestly one of the Best Dragon Ball Sagas (in my opinion atleast)

What makes the Frieza saga in particular so impactful is that the entire series was leading up to it. Think about it Frieza was the main villain of the franchise he was the reason Goku sent to earth to conquer the planet in his name, he was the reason Goku was one of the last of his kind, all the battles that Goku had since he was just a your old kid were preparing him for his climactic fight with Frieza. He was literally destined to avenging and redeem his race for their crimes. This destiny is made even more apparent when you realize his father Bardock was given the ability to see the future in foresaw just trying against the ultimate evil in the universe. Personally, I feel is a dragon ball maybe should’ve ended there.
I think people shit on DB cause there is no big over arcing story, but each character has subtle changes and grow as people/ aliens. So it’s not a story of being the pirate king, but a story about people growing into a better version of themselves.
Ive seen people say DBZ has no character development.

The whole part during the Frieza Saga where Goku sees Vegeta, Bardock, and several other Saiyans in a vision is actually filler as said scene isn't in the original manga (people who only watch the anime would be surprised how many concepts the anime expanded upon, such as the scenes that accompany Master Roshi's explanation of Goku's origins, showing Grandpa Gohan interacting with the young Kakarot & his head injury are in the original manga as Roshi just tells the story with no accompanying visuals (same goes for Raditz's exposition regarding Goku's Saiyan heritage)! Other examples include parts of Gohan's training under Piccolo being extended, Goku's adventures in HELL/HFIL, Princess Snake, the Gregory portion of King Kai's training, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien, & Chiaotzu traveling to Planet Vegeta via the Pendulum Room as part of their training under Kami (they do train under Kami but most of it occurs off panel)!
That's not to say said filler is bad, as most of it is actually pretty decent & adds to the overall narrative, especially the episodes that give Gohan some character growth & the episode were Gohan tries to bail on his training & return home which Piccolo seemingly allows as he doesn't really stop him, which I always liked as it was Gohan's choice to continue his training to protect his loved ones & the Earth's peace! I agree that some don't give DBZ's story enough credit!

This video is rather bad, I think you’re misunderstanding something here, Goku never denied being a saiyan or carried any angst from it, if anything he practically accepted it without problems, don't believe me, check chapters 211 and 308 in the original manga. And the scene where Vegeta is talking to Goku about being saiyan, that's anime only, it's not canon
Not only Z, but i feel like GT also has a great storytelling, and is completely ignored by the Dragon Ball fanbase.

@@ntnp0 Heavely disagree, the first arc is underwhelming, sure, and android 17 arc was underwhelming as well, but that's it, the rest is pretty good, it's not like dragon ball super or Z didn't had underwhelming arcs as well, garlick jr arc is still the worse arc in dragon ball history, sure, it's not canon, but is still official, it was animated, and it was part of the Z run, so liking it or not, is part of DBZ.

Everyone says that it’s garbage and that the fights are mid just because it doesn’t openly explain the plot. People now really don’t understand “show don’t tell”
That’s because shows like Naruto who constantly has flashbacks during a fight that explains the reasoning or backstory of a character’s agenda who brought up that narrative.

I've AL2AYS loved every aspect of dragon ball. I just watched Evo like last...year? Love Jimmy Steve but GOOD GOD. LMAO but the vibe and story have always kept me rewatching EVERY series and the fights are great. Dragon ball is why Fairy tail is my favorite anime

Lets see a scenario goku didn't throw cell a senzu.
Gohan will beat him in ssj1. Cell gonna self destruct. Goku will sacrifice himself again. Gohan unlock ssj2 after his father's death. Cell come back. Rest go same as anime.
We would literaly get same result only this time 16 will be Alive(but lets be honest what made him likeable was his sacrifice without that we wouldn't çare about him). İnstead of making some memes if peoples think for a moment they would see throving that senzu didn't made him a bad father.
My first glimpse of this anime was at a friend's house. I was 11-12 at the time and I just happened to look at the screen as some stubby little person screaming at the top of his lungs(Gohan about to attack Raditz)was in a stance I thought made him look like he needed to use the bathroom. My first thought was, "this is what everyone is talking about? You will never catch me watching this GARBAGE!!" Fast forward a couple of months and it's what every guy here in Barbados was talking about. And I don't mean dudes my age or teens, I'm talking grown a55 men. I saw thugs go inside off the block whenever dbz's slot on toonami was starting and come back out 1/2 hour later talking about it like it was the best thing ever. So eventually I caved, gave the show a chance, and my only regret is that I didn't start watching sooner. I won't say it's perfect but it damn sure ain't mid. Whoever is claiming that isht needs to find a format other than RUclips to view it on and hopefully watch it with their eyes and not their a5$es

Actually Goku and Vegeta weren’t close in power in the sayian saga. When vegeta powered up he was much stronger and goku had to use kaio ken to somewhat overpower him

Toryiama is not a genius, the anime literally uses death as an emotional outlet but then just brings the dead person back, How do you make a gimmick that counteracts what happens in every real fight in your show, and let’s not forget the fact that goku denying being a sayin then accepting he’s a sayin which also had no impact at all to the story, and any emotion is cut off for those who died because they come back 12 episodes of random filler later (90% of story) and the fact that y’all say this peak story telling and is supposed to be the best arc story wise tells me all I need to know. (Don’t get me started on the fact no one is allowed to progress in the story until goku is back)
