10 Places in Illinois You Should NEVER Move To

- Every state has cities and towns that are really nice, but they also have some that should be avoided at all costs, but to high poverty rates, a lack of decent jobs, a bad educational system, and/or high crime rates. Illinois is no exception. There are several communities that I would never recommend to someone moving to the Land of Lincoln. In this video, we're taking a look at 10 of those places.

Here are 9 other places in Illinois that I wouldn't recommend: ruclips.net/video/M8VY5P7Ggn0/видео.html
I grew up in Belleville in the 60s. It's sad how far it's fallen.
Did tennis player Jimmy Connors come from Belleville
Carbondale, Illinois DEFINITELY should be on the list. The city is slowing dying, with a high crime rate, businesses are leaving, as well as the people who live there. The university, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale (SIU-C) has been losing students for decades and lowered the standards for enrollment. Not a safe place for students either. The main street has lost a majority of the local businesses and looks like an abandoned city.
No paticular town. Moving to illinois period is a mistake.
Im a truck driver, and I've been through almost all of these places. It's a shame that all of these once great towns are destroyed. I think the two things that really destroyed these towns are section 8 housing and drugs.you can't change poverty and human behavior by spreading them out over vast areas. They just bring their bad habits with them. And drugs just alter human behavior towards violence and irrationality. There are other factors such as a changing economy and obsolescence, but poverty and drugs absolutely are the final death of these towns.
Thanks for showing a lot of Southern Illinois. I'm from here and it's nice to see someone showing the rest of the country how this part of the state has been driven into poverty. I love living here because of the open spaces but hate seeing over 90% of the state being crippled by Chicago.😔
i think you meant supported by...
And also something else people need to take into consideration about these crimes is that were reported is that doesn’t count all the other crimes that weren’t reported and there’s a lot of those.
When You Realize That Most Of The Cities On This List Are In The St. Louis Area. A Metro Area That Has An Extremely High Crime And Poverty Rate
Springfield should definitely be at the top of the list people from Chicago are coming to the rural areas and that's where most of the crime is stimming from they're leaving Chicago if you're not from Chicago but you're from Illinois you don't like Chicago
I’m surprised Rockford wasn’t on the list
They're on the list that I left in the pinned comment.
Rockford is in another video. Rockford is worse than the statistics. Parts of Rockford are so bad, the police will not enter the areas. When the project housing in Chicago was torn down, many moved to Rockford and related areas years ago.
I lived in Rockford for seven years when I was married. It is like three different towns in one. One is good.
@@StuckInTheKernfield I lived in Rockford for 11 years that was a shithole
There are 9 times that amount you don't want to move to either. The Soprano look alike governor thinks he is doing such a good job, that he wants to run the whole country. He cares about Chicago, and that's all matters keeping his job in Hellinois.
Ya, born in Granite City, ;lived in Wood River for a while. This area depended in heavy industry, such as steel mills, glass works, oil refineries, etc. When these industries left, they took thousands of well-paying jobs. Education, health services and government cannot make up for all those jobs lost. Visited the area six years ago, looked like all the life had been sucked out of it.
The school district in Kankakee is dismal. An unacceptable number of Teachers aren't certified to teach, and several of their Administrators aren't certified to lead. The High School didn't teach any classes for the first several weeks of the 21-22 school year because of 'scheduling issues'. But since no students were failing the Football Team nearly won State! Then in the spring of the 22-23 School year they held a Special School Board meeting about graduating dozens of Seniors who hadn't passed a class all four years. How did they respond to this complete lapse of their educational failures? They break ground on a $30 Million dollar Sporting complex.
I was born in Kankakee....Asshole of the world, and my life only got better once I moved away.
I grew up in S. Illinois and my best day there was the day I hitch hiked across the Mississippi going west and I never returned. That was sixty years ago.
You grew up in the worst part of the state. That's why. The north west has some nice mansions.
I’m from East St. Louis, far from!
where'd you wind up?
When you see the city that you live in.....🤐🤐🤐🤐
i feel.
So do I.
I just did-Moline, IL! 🤯
Thanks for your hard work on your videos. I just knew that Decatur would be on the list and with all honesty, I thought it would be #2.
Thanks for watching!
I live near Marion, and YES Carbondale is bad. Reminds me of why I moved from Chicago land.. Love the video's keep them coming. :-)
Thank you! Will do!
Not a resident, find it sad that a state that was so important in the history of the United States has fallen so far.
I was stunned by the stats on DeKalb (graduate of Northern in 1982) and back in the 70s and 80s the town was pretty run of the mill Illinoying and nobody gave it much thought. The focus was to get the diploma and the ticket out.
Dekalb should not be on this list it’s not bad at all only in the Greek row area that’s it the rest of Dekalb is nice and quiet
Me to
The crime in DeKalb is directly from students coming from Chicago. The same can be said for SIU. City gang bangers are the problem.
No, DeKalb was always pretty bad. David Letterman made fun of DeKalb on his show around 1984, joking about the 7/11 on Annie Glidden Rd./Varsity Blvd. being robbed three times in one day, and ten times in one week. And that's just one store. I don't know why, but it's always been a rough area
Graduated from NIU in 2017, terrible place around campus
I was very pleasantly surprised that Rockford was NOT on this list. We seem to end up on most lists of places you don’t want to live. 😬
It's on this one: ruclips.net/video/M8VY5P7Ggn0/видео.html
@@StuckInTheKernfieldOhhhh…yeah. So we made the FIRST list of 10. Honestly, I wouldn’t advise anyone to move here unless they had family here already and couldn’t convince their family to move elsewhere. 🤷🏼♀️
I have fond memories of being in college at SIU-C in the 1970's.
I was there back (SIU-C) in 2023...it truly looks abandoned and nothing like it did in the 1970's. Sad.
Have you seen Grand Tower, IL?? Near Chester Illinois. Absolutely shudderingly and head shaking poor condition and trashy half standing buildings. Extremely depressing
I'm shocked Phoenix and Ford Heights didn't make the list. Phoenix's police force quit 5-6 years ago because it was too dangerous. The State Police now patrol Phoenix. Actually, any of the South suburbs of Shitcago are extremely dangerous. I think it's a cultural issue. It's a shame because some of those cities were really beautiful when I was a kid, like South Holland, but now we call it South Hood.
Add in Harvey, Dolton, Hazel Crest, Matteson, Country Club Hills, and, unfortunately Homewood.
I grew up in Lansing, Illinois. South burbs of Chicago. We had a swimming pool, baseball fields, nice schools back in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Family's cared about each other and they owned their houses. It is all different now.
I think the only Ford Heights isn’t on there is the population has shrunk so much that the crime stats shrank with it.
I still work in the Quad Cities (mostly Rock Island) and it is getting worse. I worked at John Deere for almost a decade and it’s definitely not what it use to be.
@Aditi . yes
If John Deere were to leave the Quad Cities, my whole family would be in serious trouble, as my husband, son, brother, brother-in-law, and aunt-in-law all work there. That's a scary thought! 😦😥
Ten places in Illinois you should not move to: Illinois, Illinois, Illinois, Illinois, Illinois, Illinois, Illinois, Illinois, Illinois, and….wait for it…. Illinois.
Facts
I would like to see the city crime rates compared to other cities of similar size, rather than national average. I worked corrections for 26 years, all these towns are familiar to me.
Illinois is Tirrable
When you highlighted Mascoutah ❤loved that….with Scott AirForce Base next door and it is part of the Mascoutah School System. Yes, I am very very familiar with Mascoutah. My Family on my Maternal side goes back to settling Mascoutah and owning the Schubert Coal Mine and Saving the Kiel Log cabin and my mother literally saved the Espenchied Chapel holding the dead to her 100 year house she was raised in before the City Leaders (who all new her and went to school with her or was taught by her in Kindergarten) to give her 4 months to raise the money to save it. It was slated for the wrecking ball. She gathered a team together and now it is a testimonial to the people of Mascoutah and my Great Uncle Robert Schubert who built it and Laura Espenchied who left the money to have it built in the 1st place to honor her father, Dr. Espenchied. My grandparents bought Dr Espenchied’s House when Daughter, Laura passed away, 1927 Mother was raised and we had it in the family till 2013. So many wonderful wonderful things about Mascoutah.
I lived in Mascoutah from 2006-2013, and I really liked it. But went back throught there a couple months ago... and MAN! It's gotten bigger! In the ten years I have been gone, they have built a LOT of nice, new apartments and subdivision. It's really growing up fast.
Great list amazing work 👍👌👍👌thanks for your video
Glad you liked it!
@@StuckInTheKernfield you are always best your work
Hanover Park is really bad. Lots of crime, home break ins, late night parties and lots of unemployed.
@@Atomykpimp Is it really that bad? I'm nearby. I never thought it seemed bad.

Weird. Probably RUclips playing gatekeeper. I know they don't send out many notifications. I just figured it was due to people not having it clicked.
@@StuckInTheKernfield No worries, I'll just keep checking in and bing watch what I missed!
Moline does suck. But Rock island is the worst in the quad city area. There are block among blocks of vacant buildings that are tagged for demolition . Only Canton is worse than Rock Island
I was born and raised just south of Springfield, but gladly live in Missouri now. Love that you roast IL.
Just curious, "KERNFIED STUCK" ... have you ever done a review of Joliet, IL? I have a lot of friends who live there or around there and they mostly like it.
Ask them to head on up to Draper Avenue right up from the old Silver Cross Hospital that is now no more and go walk around up there and see how well they enjoy it and do a review on it. ;-) Maybe take a mozy around up by the old drive-in where the old projects were years back (it's been ages since I was up there, I've since moved away).
I do know a thing or two about the area. It is my home town. I had a lot of good times there and some horrific times there as well.
Mr Melissa McCarthy's family is from Carbondale they Moved from Belleville Illinois in the 1990s the reason Ben Falcone's mom moved out of Belleville Illinois was the education system hate to tell her down wind is a lot worse
Where is Ford heights, they sadly are one of the poorest in the nation
Illinois sure let me down it was my home state it's sad
Mine too sad drove thru from Quincy to Hardin to Alton used to live in Hardin. The whole area sad ghost of itself!
Good work as usual. We need a video telling us where to escape to, ideally out of state. Is that something you can work your magic on?😁
I have one! ruclips.net/video/23lE6Y6R3gg/видео.html
I'm going to be looking for other places in the future. Someone recently suggested that I look into Montana, so I might do videos for the different regions.
I have fond memories of Michigan and Wisconsin even though I grew up in Lansing, Illinois.
With so many interstates and railroads running through Illinois, there's no reason why it can't be an outstanding place to live. Leadership stinks in IL.
There are exactly 102 counties you should never move to in illinois.
It's probably better to stay away from Illinois all together!
I lived in one of the cities mentioned for over ten years, and was expecting your take on it to be wrong, but you were SPOT ON. Also, special shout out to Decatur. High crime AND smells bad??LOL
I live in Lawrence County, which is in the Eastern part of the state across the Wabash from Vincennes Indiana. Our crime rate is really low here, we do not lock our doors on our cars or homes most of the time. The cost of living is quite cheap.
Love all your videos, you have a very beautiful voice and I appreciate your honesty. Too bad that people can't behave themselves, isn't it?
Absolutely!
Can't believe Cairo is not on this list.
It was in the first video I did on this topic: ruclips.net/video/M8VY5P7Ggn0/видео.html
Cairo is not really a place anymore
@@denniskoppo4259 It must be that Cairo doesn't even count. Just look at the neighboring states where most people from Hellinois move to. They have Conservative government, unlike the crooks from crook County that runs this state. They have been running it in the ground for decades.Be aware Fred Flintstone wants to be president like Nuacence, someday.
How did Danville and Harvey not make the list? I always hear about how bad they are
I put Danville in the first video that I did on places to avoid: ruclips.net/video/M8VY5P7Ggn0/видео.html
And Harvey is in my video on worst Chicago suburbs.
@@StuckInTheKernfield my bad. Thanks!
Forreal Dolton. Harvey. Joliet. All garbage.
Wood river, granite city, east st.louis, belleville. They are all the same place really. Its one giant STL suburb and they all bad til you get to edwardsville or bethalto
I’m seriously surprised Galesburg didn’t make this list. They just found a random dead body here a couple days ago.
I've put Galesburg on a few lists. The one about dangerous college towns comes to mind.

We left in 97,I don't miss it, I'm now a. Happy Wisconsin resident!
@@disturbedltlman6007is it any better there? It's literally Illinois 2.0 & cheese. Even tho I do like Madison, it's a nice town. Visited there to see a friend couple of years ago. What I don't like is they're not 4/20 friendly.
I say just avoid this state as a whole. There is nothing here but corruption and high taxes. We do have a beautiful state that is just over run by bad stuff. Wonderful place to visit, great food and folks for the most part and then even greater to head on down the road back to your home town on the way back over the state line saying thanks for visiting. Too bad too. This is my home state.
I work in Carbondale. I tell my family I'm going to hell.
there are plenty of jobs in east st. louis! I worked there for 14 years as a teacher!
I have lived in IL my whole life (I’m 47) this state suuuucks IF you wanna move here that bad I say southern IL but honestly this state is so crooked n suckie….ppl here r rude uneducated and there isn’t any kind of jobs worth it here…
I lived with those “rude and uneducated people” in harmony most of my life.
As a citizen trying to escape from the People's Democratic Republic Of Illinois my advice is... DON'T Move here if at all possible.
Dumass
Let's not forget about Chicago, one of the safest cities in the US.
You can move to Florida and become famous as the next Florida man. Here in Illinois, we will be making a living wage, and have access to great public schools and universities. Considering Chicago and IL have a top ten economy in the WORLD, we will continue to give to the taker states that can not manage to vote out their conservative majority that keeps them begging for blue state funding.
@justgeorge3728 You're being sarcastic right??? Great public schools lol. That's a good one. You said living wage 😂😂😂😂. Chicago sucks up my tax money like mad. Illinois has the highest combined tax rate in the nation. You said living wage yeah 😂😂😂😂😂. Hahaha living wage 😂😂😂
If it wasn't for Chicago and the surrounding areas, I have no doubt Illinois would be a half decent state, financially speaking.
However, because this is just wishful thinking, and we live here in the real world, we have to speculate that it's a pretty messed up place, mostly due to Chicago.
And all have ridiculous real estate taxes as an extra Illinois benefit. !
Bummer. My old hometown is Kankakee - #2 on the list!
I used to live in Chicago heights...it is bad
Surprised Moline was on this list. Yeah it's slightly worse than the average american city but it's not nearly as bad as any other place on this list lol
Tell me about it-I live and am from Moline, IL! 🤯😥
I used to live in Southern Marion kind of sucks metropolis is that's a rate that is unbelievable and due to my misfortune I had to come back to Carbondale after the landlord's there are slum lords some of the cops at and the gangsters own the town. With the finances piling up and the fact that I was on the waiting list for several places out of state that couldn't seem to get to because of the waiting list and the money that was going out of my account I decided out of an act of desperation to move. In Illinois you will have no problem really finding an apartment because no one wants to be here.
How did Danville not make this list LOL!
It's in the first video I did on places not to move to in IL: ruclips.net/video/M8VY5P7Ggn0/видео.html
I would like to see the racial breakdown of these cities. That will tell you why they are so unsafe. Being a native Chicagoan, I know the answers, but I'd like it to be very clear to interested others. I stay here because of the grandchildren. Otherwise, I would have left the state. What I see what the property taxes are in most other places it makes me want to flee ILLinois. One of the most corrupt states in the country and this will never change.
not fully, the racial makeup of Belleville is pretty close to that of Florissant, Missouri (both are St Louis suburbs), with a white population of about 55%, black of 35% and 10% other/mixed, but Florissant doesn't have the crime numbers Belleville does, because it doesn't border East St Louis like Belleville does.
Carbondale's median household income is skewed by the university, just sayin'. SIU-Edwardsville has grown to be about the size that SIU-Carbondale was in 1990, and their median household income is about the same.
And I thought Quincy was bad
I've living on less than $25K and doing OK. Median Incomes are really high.
I grew up in moline, east moline actual city I’d say is actually worse. But I moved to St.louis the only reason I’d say it looks bad is population ratio. Only towns you have to worry about is Davenport across the river and Rock Island
I subscribed and I don't get notifications either? I would really appreciate it if you checked out more of Southern Illinois. Such as Duquoin, Pickneyville, etc. They are very horrible places to live!!
I'll add them to my list.
@@StuckInTheKernfield I saw on another website that Carroll County is one of the few counties in Illinois that is gaining population.(Geography King)
@Glenn Lego Yep, they gained a few hundred. I watch Kyle's channel too. He has a lot of good information.
lol, Carbondale isn't great but it definitely does not deserve #1 on this list. Maybe #10. I live about 25 minutes away from Carbondale and it's every other day a shooting is happening in the city.
They're not in any particular order, really. Just the sequence in which I gathered the data.
Carbondale aka Garbagedale definitely deserves to be #1. There are shootings daily. Sometimes multiple times a day. I've seen and heard them. The police are completely incompetent, racist and corrupt. If it wasn't for SIU, Garbagedale would be a bigger Cairo

@@jamescook6535 move to the east side of the river, it’s much better
Greetings from the Peoples Republic of Illinois. Easy to leave if you are not stuck. Unfortunately it is the governments fault, specifically the elected officials. Those people get there because of the voters in Chicago, its collar counties, and Sangamon county, period.
What about Salem, Flora, and Iuka, Illinois?
I wouldn't recommend those places either.
@@StuckInTheKernfield Salem, Illinois is the town where I was born, so why are you not recommending those towns either?
For the same reasons as the ones in the video. High crime and/or poverty. Salem has a poverty rate of 23% and a crime rate that is 154% higher than the IL average. Flora's crime rate is better than average, but a 21.3% poverty rate, and besides NAL, they don't really have many jobs in the area. Iuka, with fewer than 500 people, somehow has a crime rate that is 53% higher than the IL average, a poverty rate of 18.9%, and people living there would have to drive to another place for a decent job.
walmart distribution in Olney illinois
Salem,Flora, and Iuka are also Tronald Dump loving sundown towns. Salem is the turd in the toilet bowl the flies don't even want.
The reason I like roasting IL is because so many people in IL stubbornly vote for DEMOCRAT'S AND RINOS AS THEIR LEADERS. Wake-up ILLINOIS.
As a neighboring Iowan we love to poke fun at these Illinois residents that bash Kim Reynolds yet flock here to buy they're gas.

As a real estate appraiser, I always ask why and where people are moving. Your guidelines say no political attacks. Well then just say you don’t really want to know the real reason people are moving out of Illinois.
Where to not live in Illinois? Ilinois.
And I grew up there, so I can say this.
Grew up in Wood River- it WAS a great place back when it produced gasoline, steel and ammo.
I’ve watched your other episodes about Illinois and you have pretty much taken the entire state and turned it into a shit hole. I guess I have not watched all your other episodes on other states, but I can guarantee you with all the traveling I have done there are a lot of worst places to live than in Illinois. I am not a fan of the politics in Illinois by any means, but I literally have family in different states that show that Illinois not the worst place to live in.
Ok heres where i think its interesting cause lets be real theres not a place in Illinois that hasn't been ran by the mob. That being said i personal was told the families are alive and well. So that being said you can't have a state ran on corruption and violence and expect it to get better. Those of us that where raised by rather older gens know more then we should and seem to just have excepted nothing less. This is not a state of progress its a state of survival. Which is scary in itself. As kids we are literally told to stay out of the big cities to stay safe. Only visiting if have to or work.
I'm glad to see my towns weren't on the list, although I'm surprised.
Which towns? They might be on another one.

Danville was on her list a few years ago. While in recent years Rantoul has gotten bad, it's still nice.
I live between Carbondale and Makanda and I don't see any crime.
Forget about the crime and median income. It is the weather that makes these places unliveabe.
Wrong. We have occasional tornado, but nothing extreme. Otherwise summers and winters just like everywhere else.
We are kind of in the middle on weather. 3 kinds , reasonably shitty, shitty, and and damn shitty. Big difference in the amount of snow, Chicago average 37 in, Southern IL maybe 7 in for the entire winter.
Cairo isn't on this list?
Cairo is dying. It's just a matter of time. Their population is down 90 percent from their peak population; and there is ONE business remaining open in the downtown district.
Did you actually watch the whole video? Cairo IS on the list. It's even in the thumbnail picture.
I was born in Granite City, and it was where my father was born and raised. My mother was born in St. Louis but raised in Granite City, and my aunt was born and raised there, until they moved to Greenville, Il.
