I don't take anything you say as hurtful or judgemental. We all have our different ways of wanting to live, interests, hobbies etc. Thing is, there are plenty who think and freely tell us that we are weird for wanting to live off grid. You are a great person and I LOVE this channel.

Yes, no kidding! I grew up in the 50's, 60's, and early 70's. The easily offended whiner's wouldn't survive those years. And even scarier, they raise kids who are the same way. Everything offends them. How it was, made those of us who grew up then, the right kind of tough and resilient. We can survive and thrive just about anything. I wouldn't grow up today, or be raising children either now, for millions. Society has become a massive pity party.
I'v been watching now for a couple of years Shawn. At first I was drawn in by your continuous solid hard work. It was nice to see someone thinking through problems and solving them with available materials, and with the understanding of your remoteness and the fact that you are basicaly doing all the work yourself. Now however, I have come to really appreciate your knowledge and experience not just for your builds, but for living better. Your sensitivity to the natural world around you is awesome and inspiring. I am also very impressed by your artistic eye for capturing on video the beautiful, majestic, and wild world you live in. Some of your shots are quite litteraly breath taking. I have come to think of you as a contemporary naturalist. An artist, a scholar and an engineer living and thriving in a raw, wild setting. All of this, and you are a dedicated family man who is thoughtful, humble and kind. Now, you are simply not a RUclipsr, you are a Canadian treasure.

I remember, as a kid, camping with a couple of friends, for about 4 days. When I got home, it struck me how plain and monochromatic the floor was in our house, compared to the ground where we camped, which was a Jackson Pollock painting, of fallen leaves and twigs. If you're a 'seeker after the truth' you would want to be challenged in order to re-inforce what is true. I practiced non- chemical self sufficiency for most of my adult life and I was born at the end of WW11, it's relentless hard work, that is the adrenalin buzz. Taking the time to sit and stare is the crest of the wave, to contemplate our place on this planet of finite resources, within a system of perpetual growth, is normal.
I love the commentary! However, the fact that any of Shawn’s personal views or things he says somehow bruise the delicate sensibilities of weak minded, insecure, easily offended people, does speak to larger issues in society! Ignore these folks Shawn, and don’t waste your time addressing their lame criticisms ! Hey Shawn, When I watched your video, I never took it as a “condemning” type of video. I took it as more of a generalization, that we as a society have a tendency to take the outdoors for granted, spend less time out in nature, and spend more time inside and in the city. I totally understood it, and I definitely agree with you! Human beings need to learn some balance. See the world we are actively trying to destroy. Learn how to grow our own food so we know what we’re actually putting into our bodies instead of all the hidden antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides, and genetic modifications. Please don’t feel discouraged by some trolls on the internet. If they don’t like to hear you, they can watch the other channel, or get the heck out of dodge. Your viewers love you and respect you. They have never been offended , as the saying goes a bust in the mouth often offends , they have never been in a fight or had to stand up to anyone or anything , whining is their forte , life is too easy , they need some rough times to harden them up ( though many will not survive hard times )

In this format I’d say you’re one of the more thoughtful and least judgemental people on RUclips. Scrolling through the comments I rarely ever see negativity directed at you, obviously it exists but it must be a tiny tiny fraction of those comments. If you feel the need to make videos like this, clarifying or even apologising then that’s your choice, but I’d say the vast majority of your viewers don’t need it. This is an excellent channel, which I have come to enjoy more even than My Self Reliance, and that’s whether I agree with your point of view not. Keep it up, Shawn.

I have watched Shawn's RUclips content for almost 2 years now, found it just prior to Covid 1.0 and have used it for escape from the craziness since then. I am impressed with the kind calm attitude expressed and am bemused that critics exist. Thank you Shawn for bringing us along with you on your adventures, and agree with many commenters that the vast majority of viewers are strong supporters of your channels.
Thanks for sharing! After 54 years of marriage I was widowed but have chosen to remain in our home on 14 acres in a very rural setting. Due to the isolation of the pandemic, when I needed social support, I learned to like my own company and rely on myself. Many concerns were expressed to me with strong urgings to sell my home and move where others felt I would be "safer". End result is my social skills have slipped. What I speak or write are often misunderstood. I think I just heard you say you are experiencing something similar, however unintended. Whew! Thought I was the only one! You just "made my day!"
Hello Shawn, I find it sad to see giant homes being built around cabins and cottages. It destroys the beauty of nature that many people go to the woods and forests in North America. I also love seeing Calli run around and enjoying the woods as well. It is like the song that goes something like pave paradise and put up a parking lot. Need more building video. I enjoy seeing the progress of the build. I know it is winter, but do your best safely for us.

I spent the first 1/2 of my life living in the country in Thunder Bay. I helped my father build a cabin way out 'in the middle of nowhere', and I spent most of my time being around trees, bears, moose, and not a lot of people. Now I live in downtown Toronto, because of my work situation, and although I often miss being out in the woods, I find that I can watch your great channels and I can sort of live vicariously through you! I do go to the gym on a regular basis, because I don't have firewood to chop and heavy logs to move around to keep me fit, but every time that I get the opportunity to head 'up north', I take it, and all of those memories from my younger days quickly return. Thanks, Shawn, for taking the time to share all of these great videos with us. It's greatly appreciated!
I enjoy how determined you are with your self build and complete method of construction of your cabin and food sorce. The fact that you move these massive logs into place and carve out the notches with primative tools is awesome, lets us see how it was a 100 years ago. One thing you have been proving for years now, ever since I've been watching your videos, is that you say what you think and never speak bad about people or anything. You are such a chilled and thoughtful person. I cannot understand why people would think so, but probably that's just the time we live in.
I bought my piece of paradise back in 1997 in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Built a cabin with my own two hands. On the water with all the fish I can catch and surrounded with all the game which I hunt. Learned to identify and harvest all the foods of the wild and grow most everything else. What I've learned after all these years (I'm now 55) is that the older we become the more we need the society around us. A man is only an island for so long. So, like anything else in this world...balance is the key. A balance of self suffiency combined with a balance of the convenience and comforts that civilizations bring. You proved yourself worthy, Shawn and your channel and life you've created is an inspiration for many...myself included. Keep doing what you do!

Even tho I have no debt I still work for a living (been a licensed builder since 1991) and there's just never enough time. Maybe one day I'll go full RUclips for a living. Would be a great life!

I friend of mine owns the home of the juicy Lucy. I agree with u, some people are looking for what they deem as negative so they can proceed with their negativity. We all have a right to our own thoughts. Not everyone has to listen long enough to understand it. From the years I have been paying attention to James he has my attention although I would like to know him better which takes time. I decide to give him the time since it is mine!

Yep, and when you are not understood, trying to explain will get you deeper in misunderstanding :) For example, till now, except some minor errors, I saw nothing wrong in all these talks. But in this one there were a lot of errors. Some about clear figures. Like that percentage of urban population a century ago. Some about complex reasoning. Like one about the health. People were not healthier before. It just happened that died too fast to have time to not be healthy:) Sure, pollution is really a bad thing. But actually any living organism is polluting when outgrows the area. Just look at locusts, or those migratory herds that tramples everything in their path. And people destroyed the surroundings since ages. It just was the luck that there were more places to go and destroy. Now we run out of places. Fortunately we started to see, and those with responsible minds, are trying to live sustainably. Unfortunately, more of us do not care. We care only about personal comfort.
I have learned self-sufficiency from you for many years while I live on an urban homestead with amenities (that I’m grateful for). I’m nearing 70 years old and a single woman who has learned to be self-sufficient mainly because of you. Never stop being your authentic self.

Hello, Shawn! I am grateful to have this opportunity to tell you how much I enjoy your channels. I watch as much as I can of both. I wanted to let you know who is out here sharing your story: me … a 76 year old single woman! I had a few fortunate years as a child to spend time in the woods by my self. I take every chance I get to be in nature (as is the popular way of saying that.) I hope you don't get discouraged by some who don't recognize or respect your point of view. Your work has given me a reminder that I will always have the out of doors when I need a refuge. I so appreciate that (your work) and your dedication. Yes, no kidding! I grew up in the 50's, 60's, and early 70's. The easily offended whiner's wouldn't survive those years. And even scarier, they raise kids who are the same way. Everything offends them. How it was, made those of us who grew up then, the right kind of tough and resilient. We can survive and thrive just about anything. I wouldn't grow up today, or be raising children either now, for millions. Society has become a massive pity party.

I'v been watching now for a couple of years Shawn. At first I was drawn in by your continuous solid hard work. It was nice to see someone thinking through problems and solving them with available materials, and with the understanding of your remoteness and the fact that you are basicaly doing all the work yourself. Now however, I have come to really appreciate your knowledge and experience not just for your builds, but for living better. Your sensitivity to the natural world around you is awesome and inspiring. I am also very impressed by your artistic eye for capturing on video the beautiful, majestic, and wild world you live in. Some of your shots are quite litteraly breath taking. I have come to think of you as a contemporary naturalist. An artist, a scholar and an engineer living and thriving in a raw, wild setting. I remember, as a kid, camping with a couple of friends, for about 4 days. When I got home, it struck me how plain and monochromatic the floor was in our house, compared to the ground where we camped, which was a Jackson Pollock painting, of fallen leaves and twigs. I practiced non- chemical self sufficiency for most of my adult life and I was born at the end of WW11, it's relentless hard work, that is the adrenalin buzz. Taking the time to sit and stare is the crest of the wave, to contemplate our place on this planet of finite resources, within a system of perpetual growth, is normal.

However, the fact that any of Shawn’s personal views or things he says somehow bruise the delicate sensibilities of weak minded, insecure, easily offended people, does speak to larger issues in society! Ignore these folks Shawn, and don’t waste your time addressing their lame criticisms ! When I watched your video, I never took it as a “condemning” type of video. I took it as more of a generalization, that we as a society have a tendency to take the outdoors for granted, spend less time out in nature, and spend more time inside and in the city.
I totally understood it, and I definitely agree with you! Human beings need to learn some balance. See the world we are actively trying to destroy. Learn how to grow our own food so we know what we’re actually putting into our bodies instead of all the hidden antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides, and genetic modifications.
Please don’t feel discouraged by some trolls on the internet. If they don’t like to hear you, they can watch the other channel, or get the heck out of dodge. Your viewers love you and respect you. If you started a podcast or livestreams where your viewers could interact with you and ask questions, I know it would be a fun time.

In this format I’d say you’re one of the more thoughtful and least judgemental people on RUclips. Scrolling through the comments I rarely ever see negativity directed at you, obviously it exists but it must be a tiny tiny fraction of those comments. If you feel the need to make videos like this, clarifying or even apologising then that’s your choice, but I’d say the vast majority of your viewers don’t need it. This is an excellent channel, which I have come to enjoy more even than My Self Reliance, and that’s whether I agree with your point of view not. Keep it up, Shawn.

Thanks for sharing! After 54 years of marriage I was widowed but have chosen to remain in our home on 14 acres in a very rural setting. Due to the isolation of the pandemic, when I needed social support, I learned to like my own company and rely on myself. Many concerns were expressed to me with strong urgings to sell my home and move where others felt I would be "safer". End result is my social skills have slipped. What I speak or write are often misunderstood. I think I just heard you say you are experiencing something similar, however unintended. Whew! Thought I was the only one! You just "made my day!"

I spent the first 1/2 of my life living in the country in Thunder Bay. I helped my father build a cabin way out 'in the middle of nowhere', and I spent most of my time being around trees, bears, moose, and not a lot of people. Now I live in downtown Toronto, because of my work situation, and although I often miss being out in the woods, I find that I can watch your great channels and I can sort of live vicariously through you! I do go to the gym on a regular basis, because I don't have firewood to chop and heavy logs to move around to keep me fit, but every time that I get the opportunity to head 'up north', I take it, and all of those memories from my younger days quickly return. Thanks, Shawn, for taking the time to share all of these great videos with us. It's greatly appreciated!
I enjoy how determined you are with your self build and complete method of construction of your cabin and food sorce. The fact that you move these massive logs into place and carve out the notches with primative tools is awesome, lets us see how it was a 100 years ago. One thing you have been proving for years now, ever since I've been watching your videos, is that you say what you think and never speak bad about people or anything. You are such a chilled and thoughtful person. I cannot understand why people would think so, but probably that's just the time we live in.
I bought my piece of paradise back in 1997 in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Built a cabin with my own two hands. On the water with all the fish I can catch and surrounded with all the game which I hunt. Learned to identify and harvest all the foods of the wild and grow most everything else. What I've learned after all these years (I'm now 55) is that the older we become the more we need the society around us. A man is only an island for so long. So, like anything else in this world...balance is the key. A balance of self suffiency combined with a balance of the convenience and comforts that civilizations bring. You proved yourself worthy, Shawn and your channel and life you've created is an inspiration for many...myself included. Keep doing what you do!

@@TheWestlandgirl thank you! I so wish I would of filmed this adventure from the start. I started on this path before the great recession and even before the whole off-grid craze took off. Even tho I have no debt I still work for a living (been a licensed builder since 1991) and there's just never enough time. Maybe one day I'll go full RUclips for a living. Would be a great life!

Calm down everyone. There were a few polite, valid counterpoints made in his last video. Shawn recognizes that so he responded and even agreed. I’m sure he comes across as apologetic because he wants his channel to maintain a positive aura and avoid dragging people in to unpleasant debates.

I friend of mine owns the home of the juicy Lucy. I agree with u, some people are looking for what they deem as negative so they can proceed with their negativity. We all have a right to our own thoughts. Not everyone has to listen long enough to understand it. From the years I have been paying attention to James he has my attention although I would like to know him better which takes time. I decide to give him the time since it is mine!
I wonder how many hours I’ve watched your video for advice, entertainment and Cali. My time is very valuable to me but I really enjoy the content you have put out. I’m a mental health nurse and you don’t realize how true what you are saying about being out in nature can help your mental and physical well being. The wisdom you bring might be overlooked but it is very relevant to me.

For example, till now, except some minor errors, I saw nothing wrong in all these talks.
But in this one there were a lot of errors.
Some about clear figures. Like that percentage of urban population a century ago.
Some about complex reasoning. Like one about the health.
People were not healthier before. It just happened that died too fast to have time to not be healthy:)
Sure, pollution is really a bad thing. But actually any living organism is polluting when outgrows the area.
Just look at locusts, or those migratory herds that tramples everything in their path.
And people destroyed the surroundings since ages. It just was the luck that there were more places to go and destroy.
Now we run out of places. Fortunately we started to see, and those with responsible minds, are trying to live sustainably.
Unfortunately, more of us do not care. We care only about personal comfort.
I have learned self-sufficiency from you for many years while I live on an urban homestead with amenities (that I’m grateful for). I’m nearing 70 years old and a single woman who has learned to be self-sufficient mainly because of you. Never stop being your authentic self.

Peoples fuse are so short these days and they feel offended just opening their eyes in the morning. Don't waste your own energy trying to explain to people that most likely will be just as offended by the next video you put out. It is their life elixir to be offended. I watch this channel for exactly why you made the channel, because I want to hear your thoughts. Some people only listen to others' comments and just relate it to themselves (sort of self centered existence). I think your audience here really looks forward to your observations and comments!

Hello, Shawn! I am grateful to have this opportunity to tell you how much I enjoy your channels. I watch as much as I can of both. I wanted to let you know who is out here sharing your story: me … a 76 year old single woman! I had a few fortunate years as a child to spend time in the woods by my self. I take every chance I get to be in nature (as is the popular way of saying that.) I hope you don't get discouraged by some who don't recognize or respect your point of view. Your work has given me a reminder that I will always have the out of doors when I need a refuge. I so appreciate that (your work) and your dedication. It has inspired me to keep going on my bit of property. I am looking forward to spring here in Michigan. I'll be back out there doing my part to love the earth and all on it. Blessings and thank you.
