Completely agree Shawn. The reason people are so depressed and sad at the minute is we are not supposed to live the way we do. 8 - 5, 5 days a week, working until your 70 it’s a joke, the thing is people are always comparing themselves to the rich 1% and with the internet it’s hard to escape it. Our lives are just controlled by society to keep the money flowing for the upper echelons. I’m my opinion a way to secure the future of our generations is teach the young and break the cycle, challenge the opinions of our elders to hopefully change them. The only way forward is to have a symbiotic relationship with nature and respect the things we have in our local environment. In theory it isn’t hard to achieve but the problem that consistently persists is human greed and stupidity our leaders don’t want it to happen. They only think of now. Living communally like we did over the past hundred years made people stick together and talk to each other now people barely know their neighbours.
Hopefully this will change but only we can change it.
Fortunately the one internet has your videos and others like it to help start the change!

I hardly ever say anything on any of the channels that I watch most of them are a lot like yours or are similar in some ways, I watch them on my TV but unfortunately on the TV there's no option to leave comments. So I go to my phone and into RUclips find your channel and leave a comment except sometimes I just forget and get sidetracked anyway, I grew up out in the country on 30 acres with eight brothers and one sister we raised all kinds of animals we raised a lot of our own food and it just seems the " world" entices many people to leave small communities. I thoroughly appreciate it growing up the way I did and maybe two other people in my family did too but the rest of them not so much, although they have gone on to be very successful in what they've done. I was supposed to have acreage given to me by my parents, was promised to me and each sibling got their fair share if they wanted it only a few of us wanted it but then it turned out that my parents needed the money and they sold it instead. Anyway a lot of times life gets in the way and you end up in a place where you don't really want to be. I have been able to travel and see parts of the world and the lived in different parts of the world in different cultures which makes me appreciate what we have here in North America even more. We have been so Blessed with what we've been given by God. I really would like to go live in the desert like in Arizona or someplace like that harvest my own rainwater and build my own place, unfortunately at my age I'm 71 now that's hard for me to do I have several physical problems that kind of stop me from doing that unless I found a good man that wanted to do it with me I would love to be living off grid so much! I do have all the knowledge to do it I had education to do it maybe sometime here soon I could do it who knows anyway I'm proud of you, I love what you're doing, it's fascinating to watch how you go about all of your projects and how you complete them how you think about them beforehand and I like it when you talk about things like that. You're a great teacher. All the beauty that you're showing your drone footage is amazing utterly amazing and I know you probably use trail cams and all sorts of video equipment and do such a wonderful job with all of that, just to let you know my dog Dexter is fascinated with Callie, he watches the show with me and every time she's on there he just is giving his full attention to the TV it's so funny I sit and just laugh and laugh and laugh it's very precious to see, he doesn't seem to care so much for the bears or elk or deer or anything else he recognizes the dog! Too funny! But I agree with you everything you said yep it's true it's a shame that we can't get back to that I hope people work towards it is going to have to start an education system and unfortunately it looks like most kids are going to have to be homeschooled to under understand what's needed to turn our societies around but that is where it begins! I've gone on way longer than I ever have before just God bless you and your family, stay safe, you're on the right track!!!!!

Many many people are doing Positive stuff Sean. We are not doomed. I live in a small town and we are all overcoming challenges after a recent fire storm killed friends and destroyed entire homes. We are resilient human beings. Often we blend what our ancestors did with a few modern conveniences .
we are most of the time happy. I’m 76 and I feel 23. I can’t wait for sunrise. I planted two fruit trees yesterday. I collected some rain water for a few household needs . I refuse to entertain fear nor do I spend time with naysayers. From you I learned that I can use tools, find edible mushrooms nearby and cook food over a fire right outside my front door . So please cheer up! There is a lot of joy and happiness happening. Ya just got to make some for yourself and share it.

To purposely be as selfish as you imply is part of the issue with Americans, but unfortunately, it appears you do not comprehend the present state of the world and Our Country and all other Countries? We are about to enter the very last of days, and even science said almost 50 years ago that in approximately 50 years the world be so damaged by chemical byproducts it will begin the end for mankind, more unfortunate yet, is the fact we now have billionaire individuals plotting against Freedoms, Our food, Our shelter etc. and the Corporations now run the Government in America and the "leaders" are corrupt, as is the
"Judicial System". The worlds skies are being sprayed with artificial clouds the media now calls "persistent con-trails" and almost never do we have real clouds but lines that spread to a haze or something similar to a cloud. There is no truth in media or Governments or Corporations and their plans for the world do not include anyone's Freedoms but a stepping order, and if you fall out of line with what the Powers say is, you will suffer, as already has begun.

While I do not disagree with the notion that being in nature is cathartic, media is important, as is politics. The world is going to keep on turning whether you acknowledge it or not. What strikes me as problematic is that most media companies and their audiences do no longer seem to be aware of the important distinction between news and entertainment.
As a consequence, large parts of the world population appear to have fallen prey to a school of thinking where emotions replace facts. This is unsustainable and - if allowed to continue - will be the end of democracy and - a little further down the line - humanity.

it's less about what is or isn't "the media" because journalism and news is extremely important. It's our inundation with and frustration over how different news sources frame or create a narrative of the news that builds our disdain for 'the media'.
We need to be able to disconnect or at the very least learn to distance yourself from the inundation. Only then can you appreciate how being current on the news is important but also not all we ever need to be concerned with or thinking about all the time.

Shawn, I have watched your channels from the beginning. I started for the Algonquin canoe videos, to learn how to canoe the Algonquin back country. My son suffers from anxiety and depression, and as you discussed in this video, I wanted to see what impact spending a week in nature (grounding) might have on him. Previous to our first trip, he was in a dark place. Seldom did we see him smile. After 3 days in Algonquin, he was smiling and joking and a completely different person. Broke my heart to watch him return to his old self within 24 hrs of returning to southern Ontario. At that time, I knew we needed to move north full time, but a career was standing in my way. After losing my job (of 31 yrs) last yr. I thought it was time. However, my son (now 20) has a girlfriend here who will not even consider moving north. Without her, my son will not consider it, without him my wife will not consider it. Now I am back working in a large steel mill on Lake Erie. It is almost painful. My mind, heart and soul want to be where you are. Watching your channels almost transports me there for a short period. I still travel to your neck of the woods, and continue to look for property. I often discuss the very topics that you addressed here. I hope some day we get to meet up and have some conversation over a good cup of wild Chaga Coffee. Thank you for what you are doing. You are an inspiration.

When I had a teacher, many years up at an Ashram at Eagle Point Oregon ( 1990’s ), he emphasised that around the planet in different pockets, there are those of us in mankind, who no matter what, pursue Humanity on the path of integrity, connectedness, small community involvement. People who do not follow the great leader types, more so “what works for us by consensus in our small community, and how can we implement it with cooperation from other communities in the area.

Shawn, I have been following your channels for years and enjoy them immensely. I am 73 years old and believe I have acquired a little wisdom. This post encouraged me to make a short comment. I too believe that a closer relationship with the natural world is healthy for both physical and mental and societal health. Having said that, there are a few other practices I believe are essential to have a good and enjoyable life. These are patience, gratitude, thankfulness, and contentment. There are others.
Years ago I heard a wonderful definition of Prosperity. “Prosperity is having enough”. Been content with what we have does not necessarily mean not having goals or pursuing something we want. But if that pursuit, is robbing you of the wonders of what we have today, you rob yourself of today. You seem to have found that balance. For example, taking time to through Cali her toy, or recording the wonders of your surroundings, or hunting, fishing, reading, or preparing a fine meal. These thing are what we enjoy now….today! You also find pleasure in the pursuits for the future. The joy and satisfaction or building your previous cabin, outhouse, outdoor kitchen, pond etc. is something that you did not leave there when you moved.
Anyway, just a few thoughts from an old man living on a half-acre near Lake Hickory, North Carolina. ❤️😎

I absolutely love it and am now considering an even smaller home - perhaps a tiny home. I spent years collecting antiques and finally realized my children were not interested in the things I have at all and I just wasn't happy with so much stuff around me. It is so freeing to live with less and I hope to continue on this path, it truly has brought me peace. Oh and I don't think we need to give up viewing videos like yours. Anything that gives us inspiration and peace is a good thing!

Hi Shawn, your talk today really resonated with me. I have been a healthcare worker for the past 20 years and have worked a lot with mental health. The disconnect and lack of meaning you talked about is exactly what happens to people with mental problems! You hit the nail on the head! Because life is so complex now, and meaningful hands-on manual work is so devaluated, and unavailable even, lots of people just feel demotivated and useless. They feel they have no control over their lives, and control is an important part of being human because it gives you validation and a sense of purpose. Obviously if you feel you have no control in a positive and meaningful way, like providing for your family, then you are going to try to find it in a negative way which usually leads to violence and addiction. The problem with our world right now, is that young people are not taught crafts, husbandry, gardening or nature anymore, (its all very uncool) unless they already have a problem! When you talk about manual work these days, what usually comes to mind is pushing a wheelbarrow full of cement for a very unfair wage in a dead end kind of life! You and I may remember growing up in a very different world where kids had a lot more autonomy to follow their curiosity and interests, discovering things for themselves, but today most city kids get no such chance. I worry, like you, that the world as it now is, is decaying into chaos. I agree with you that this is the beginning of an end and humanity needs to learn to go back to basics again. I love your videos because you are a kindred spirit in the sense that you value a life lived in a symbiotic partnership with nature, and what you do is full of real wholesome meaning! I think part of being a bit of a loner and nature lover is that you can step back and see what is happening more clearly... I can see it clearly, but lots of people can't see it coming at all! I don't know if it is genuine blindness or downright denial because they feel so helpless. Sorry about the rant....

Basically, you were accountable for your actions. Then I moved to a huge city and it was shocking to see the difference. People didn’t care how they treated each other, rudeness was the norm, because chances were you’d never see that person again- there was no consequences to your actions. I’ve since moved back to a very small town and the difference is night and day- holding doors open, waving, smiling even. My heart is happier.

What you are doing to build a beautiful dwelling with your own hands should help you to find peace and a sense of accomplishment, even through these trying times. When you do get around people, make sure to engage with them and have compassion for them. Too many people are being taught to fear everything and their anxieties cause them incredible stress. Watching things like this IS what keeps us from losing what sanity we have left. We need to know that not everyone is becoming dysfunctional. Growing up in the 50s and 60s and even the 70s, I personally experienced the height of family and community cooperation and connectiveness. Losing my grandparents and parents' generation started the decline in our whole social structure. You would think that the technological advancements in communication would bring us closer together. We used to visit each other in order to have a tight relationship, and then we turned to the telephone, and now in many instances we are not even hearing each others voices (which belie more than just the words) and are now texting each other. I was appalled when people would not answer their phone to talk to you personally, but would text you for hours. We have lost our way. We have lost our community. We need to get that back. Take care Shawn.

My kids are finishing HS in next two years, but this home, hidden away in nature, and yet close too all we could ever need has been a blessing! I was raised frugal/old school, and spent time with family, especially learning from and later caring for the older members….. I feel I have may skills, but not all are yet perfected! (Haha, provides a challenge and purpose as well as confidence to keep learning!) I was home raising my kids, a dog, and keeping up house, as well as volunteering at church, school, scouts and so on…. For past many years, my husband had been working remote, so I was able to prep his breakfasts and lunches too… The trees, yard, garden and flowers keep us busy most of the year, and when weather is not the best, we can cook, bake, play board games, work puzzles and do many kinds of crafts and house projects as a family…. It is good for the mind and soul to work hard!

For me, that was an uplifting video. It sometimes can feel a bit lonely on this side of the fence, sorta speak.
I'm in my 3rd year doing agricultural and horticultural studies in the Netherlands. Regarding regenerative and conventional farming, some corrections are in order. In conventional farming, output is not necessarily higher. However, conventional farmers apply a surplus of fertilizers at the start of the growing season which in effect kills a lot of the microbiome in the soil responsible for making "locked" fertilizers such as phosphate available. This causes a negative feedback loop where the farmer _has_ to kill his soil with fertilizers he really doesn't need because his soil is basically dead and now relies on his yearly overdose.
The concept of regenerative farming centers around the soil microbiome and building that up rather than breaking it down. The drawback is that if you gun specifically for a high output of one single crop, you're going to lose from the conventional farmer. However, as a regenerative farmer, one has many crops spread over the year. Altogether, regenerative agriculture is _less_ labor intensive, requires less machinery and on the whole produces more while restraining costs on things as fertilizers and pest control. Specialized drills and sound knowledge of crops and soil is needed, however.
    Goodluck with the cabin!

Is this in line with permaculture then?

    • @Flyingdutchy33
      @Flyingdutchy33 2 года назад +2

@@MiddleEarthGirl75 Let me put it this way:
      All permaculture is regenerative farming.
Regenerative farming is not necessarily permaculture.
I understand this is a bit confusing (it was for me and my brethren) but the way it works out the way we see it is like this: Regenerative farming is nature inclusive agriculture. So you're modifying your permaculture in such a way that it benefits humans most, while providing a space for nature.
What permaculture and food forests usually lack is commercial viability. Let's say you have your food forest permaculture setup. While a couple of acres may perfectly feed your family, it is certainly not going to be enough for a village. Part of this is the increased labor. Your berry bushes are going to be throughout the parcel, making gathering of berries quite a chore as opposed to neat rows. Regenerative farming plants neat rows, incorporates permaculture principles, but is focused on yield, whereas a food forest is focused on nature inclusivity and by default, not yields.
We've all seen the images of giant fruits from the jungle as opposed to what is grown on cultivated lands. I am a big believer that the yield from ecologically managed farms can outdo those of synthetic farms. But we have to also be realistic. If we are to feed this many people, it would take far too much labor & land and thusly, drive up the costs of living.
A compromise is in order, at least for the time being. And I believe regenerative farming is an answer to at least some of the problems facing agriculture today.
P.S. the average age of farmers worldwide is now 65-58. We need more people, more now than ever.

Shawn, you're not alone in your logical thinking. There are MANY of us all on the same page with your line of thinking. It's not just common sense as we look around but a feeling in my spirit. The world is pretty messed right now but thanks to you, we have a window of peace as we see the beauty that God created. Thank you for your time that you share with us. God bless.

We are living in an environment that wants to dictate ours lives in how we live, think and respond to our neighbors. Those we have in-trusted to lead our governments have broken not only their oaths but have sold their integrity to the elite who want total control of humanity. We must learn to communicate and trust one another in these trying times against a tyrannical nwo ideology. Great Video Shawn. Lines must be drawn and maintained or life as we known will be lost forever.

I always get so much value from your insights. Although going your route is either not possible (or not exactly desired) by many, the theme to find peace and satisfaction in life is so spot on. I couldn't imagine sitting at a computer or answering telephones all day, unfortunately for many it doesn't seem they have an option. We hope they can get some satisfaction and risk/reward rush (dopamine) from other parts of their lives. I'm afraid our 100 mph rush down the left lane of the information highway will only lead to overall more dissatisfaction.

I agree 100%, Shawn. And I appreciate you speaking up about it. I think it’s an important conversation we should all be having now.
My husband and I bought land far away from any major city, out in the woods, last summer and then we built a cabin this year. We have it completely off grid. You inspire us a lot and had it not been for the current situation, we wouldn’t have jumped on the opportunity when we did. We are so beyond thankful we did and I don’t think I could’ve survived mentally without it this past year. It brings us back to nature in the most meaningful way.
Thanks again for your words of wisdom and inspiration. God Bless.

I really enjoy these "fireside chats", Shawn. I'm often trapped between my agrarian roots in the Great Lakes region and the technology focus of my career. Sometimes it is a balance between the two, sometimes one wins out over the other. The question is always which fulfills what is most important to you as an individual.

I completely agree with what you say about doing something toward a meaningful life. I'm in high tech, but on weekends and evenings, I built a woodworking shop in an unheated, unairconditioned garage. My tools are a collection of woodworking tools that go back to the mid-1800's. I restored each of them and use them in woodworking projects entirely with hand tools and no power tools of any kind. I hand built a cherry tool cabinet with hand-cut joinery and dove tails. The cherry wood I found at a mill in upstate NY and all rough stock that I hand planed down. This cabinet stores my collection of antique and vintage wood working tools. Next was to restore an antique workbench that belonged to my grandfather. This bench is where I do all my woodworking projects. I can't describe the incredible feeling I get working with wood and 100+ year old hand tools. This hobby connects me to the past and to my grandfather. I don't care if it is 20F out there, I enjoy my time working with these hand tools and creating projects that I design and build myself. Probably why I enjoy your channel so much. Thanks Shawn.

So I have listened to you and read many of the comments. I am blessed with living much of the preparation I made to find happiness and meaning. But bottom line no matter how far or fast we run, the world is closing in as it crumbles down. There is nowhere to hide from what is coming and only so much preparation. Your words I am taking away with me are “I am making a plea…”. God bless that plea and add mine to it. Especially when the odds are against, you get up and fight to keep what you love and believe in no matter where you live or what you are doing. A prophet cries out in the wilderness…listen and make way. Keep on keeping on brother. You have what is good and beautiful and true on your side. Long may you and all your followers live and prosper!!!

I´m a person who´s lived in the city my whole life and I am part of every thing that´s modern life in terms of technology etc. When I find my self in nature, in a simpler environment, I do feel better, yet I always feel a strong urge to get back to the modern life. It´s like an addiction. I want it even though it in some sense makes me miserable. When you think about how companies quite cynically are extremely good at creating products that appeal to our addictive side, maybe it´s no wonder I feel this way. I think it´s hard for the average person to break this addiction to modern life. The governments, companies etc. have us in the palm of their hand, and we´re playing their game whether it makes us happy or not.

You've done a 'FINE JOB' of teaching us 'how' to get back to the land Shawn, and sooner than much later...we will be 'obliged' to 'get back to the land'. As is...life MUST get much worse B 4 we get to the 'proper' mindset. The 'awareness' you sense/understand, even in the remoteness of your bush life existence, comes especially through the tie to family members who are not connected to living off the land. At least your immediate members have some knowledge and appreciation of the land. It will come...and in the meantime, you have done 'much' to grant them a softer landing from what is inevitable. I am a long-time reader of 'THEE' book. It unveils life, like a playbook. We are made aware, that we may 'prepare' ourselves. In the meantime, it is 'best' to get acquainted with THEE One, who placed us on this once VERY beautiful earth, as alone...'hopelessness' is the only alternative. Thanks 4 sharing and God bless you n' yours!

To live your best life, you must do this... (from Carthage Buckley)
    Who am I?
    What is important to me?
Why do I do what I do?
Why am I passionate about the things I am passion about?
    When am I happiest?
How can I put more of "me" into my work?
Look and embrace the "positives in life".
    Thanks Shawn!! Great reflection...

The only trouble with people connecting with nature is that they ruin it. They don't understand low impact and leaving it as you find it. The amount of garbage that is found out in the countryside (and seas and waterways) is heart breaking. Great thoughts as usual Shawn. 👍 😎

I can see your point, but I believe that unless people get out and see the impact they have then they will not change habits. This happens in our lives with finances, relationships...practically anything. The reality is people today lack Purpose in their lives - they feel empty. I have always believed that purpose is the key to growing in life.

We went to The Gambia 4 years ago for vacation, we especially enjoyed the "we are one community" feeling in The Gambia (and perhaps in more African countries). We love it so much that we go to The Gambia at least ones a year (due to covid we didnt this year). The first vacation we met a great man and his family and we support them since then, we have contact via whatsapp weekly and send them goods and money. That is so fulfilling and makes me so happy every day, i can't describe!
