Cool review of these Adidas hiking shoes. I have been binge watching lots of AT thru hikers RUclips videos. Majority of them choose not to hike in gortex boots/shoes as they do not dry out quick enough if hiking all day in heavy rain and having to wake through too many streams flowing with deeper water. I might have to buy a pair of Adidas trail running shoes and see if they work for my size 12/2E wide feet. I am leaning towards buying a goid pair of altra mont blonc or Olympus trail sneakers or the hooka speed goat or altra lone peaks model trail shies.
That is interesting. What materials and shoes are they using? I definitely have not put mine through the same rigors of thru hikers but I have stayed out doors in them for several days on end. I haven’t experienced drying issues at all. I can’t imagine what dries faster than Gore Tex & Nylon coated with DWR. Please share your findings I’m very interested.
yo great video, liked the way you broke it all down. I'm thinking about getting the cold.rdy pair bc I like the way it looks, only problem is that I live in south Florida where it only gets cold like for like a day or two out of the whole year haha. would you recommend me getting them?
Absolutely not, it barely gets cold enough in north Georgia for me to break these out. If you just want to look you could try but I feel like you would get way more usage out of the regular GTX model.
@@KRTLyfe thanks! I’ve never seen/ held them in person so I didn’t know if it really was insulated inside of it. Hopefully they make the same boot style of the cold.rdy but just with the GTX technology!
great video, love the contrasting opinions you have on both model boots and how you break down some pros and cons. I recently purchased the Adidas Terrex Free Hiker and am giving some thought now to purchase the TERREX FREE HIKER COLD.RDY HIKING BOOT. My only question and concern is with the zipper, so I have to ask; has the zipper held up in the ways you have used the boot, and how are both after almost a year?
Thanks for sharing! My zipper has held up, but to be honest, even tho I haven’t had any issues it does sit in the back of my mind… If this zipper ever breaks these shoes are done. They didn’t use a YKK zipper either, but so far so good! I sold my regular GTX version because I started defaulting to my COLD RDY model and I don’t like keeping too many shoes.
@@KRTLyfe Thank you for the input. I actually ordered a pair of the COLD RDY and see for myself if it can hold up to the New England weather I have to deal with in MASS. Thanks again.
@@KRTLyfe I have been noticing something you slightly mentioned in your video regarding the around the foot material being a little tight on the Adidas Terrex Free Hiker GTX; question is; was that the reason why you sold that model over the zipper make? Did you find that it didn't exist with the zipper model? This very well might make me want to return the Adidas Terrex Free Hiker GTX is the tightness doesn't go away, Thanks
@@PetersonBlanc no the tightness wasn’t really a deal breaker for me. I actually wore the lace version a lot. I just felt like having two pairs of a very similar shoe was overkill for my wardrobe and I am trying to cut the fat so to speak.
Great review. I already own the CLD.RDY. They are, in my opinion the best hiking boot I’ve ever owned. I find them super comfy and extremely warm and keep my feet dry. However they’re too warm for summer hiking so here to find what’s the best option for a summer hiking boot :).
Bought Free Hiker GTX cos the felt better to me and look more stylish (don't look like expedition wear). The shoes are for different temperature ranges as was mentioned. Boost make them feel softer/bouncier than regular winter boots but not as soft as X9000L4 I have.
I got a pair of each, they are my shoes when it snows so my feet still completely dry and I can wear them all day because they are absolutely comfortable.
They do run large but not large enough to size down. The normal free hikers are too stretchy on the top of the foot which made them horrible to hike downhill in. My current go to hiking shoes are the Arcteryx Aerios GTX, which are superb in terms of lockdown, weight and grip.
Same experience. I found them good on relatively flat terrain, nice to ascend with so long as it wasn't too muddy. They were horrible to descend with. Unbalanced, couldn't heel brake. Just horrible. It felt like trying to descend in a trainer. They're not for mountains as far as I can see. Scarpa, Lowa, Salewa etc make mountain boots.
Well, Cold.Ready at adidas means "Primaloft" Isolation, which is simulation of "down feather" with synthetic material. Primaloft is for cold wet and coldest dry conditions.
So I’ve been pondering using the regular Free Hiker as a trail running shoe but I’m on the fence about it. I saw a guy on RUclips that said he did a 40 mile hike/run on them and that had me thinking…
@@KRTLyfe It is a fairly good trail shoe for longer distance, but the wt is a bit heavy, I prefer the INOV 8 G300 for long run past 15 miles or the Salmon Ultra glide for the same distance. Hoka has the speed goat as well another great contender for trail running. But for slower pace stuff the free hiker is comfortable and long lasting build well…love it for mix stuff like fast packing etc…Hope that helped have a great weekend.
I “think” the COLD.RDY version should be well suited for that region. I have only been able to test mine down to the 20s Fahrenheit. They performed well in cold windy and wet Georgia winter. I honestly felt them to be overkill for the southern United States. Hopefully that helps just my 2 cents.
So I ended up buying these boots. We got our first snow where I live today. I was looking forward to taking my dog for our daily walk. I'm not exaggerating when I say that literally every step I took in the snow, the boots would slip just a little bit. These are definitely NOT confidence inspiring in snowy/icy conditions.
I plan to bay this TERREX FREE HIKER GORE-TEX Could you tell me something about how it feels on snow is it could standing on ice or snow for longer time??? Btw very gooood video.👍
Great video! Are those free hiker GTX (the normal ones) not the cold ones ... are they hot on a walk ? Say over 10 miles? Not very breathable some say? I’m just about to get these or the non goretex version for extra breathability and maybe spray them with nano waterproof spray just so they are breathable over the goretex example. Any thoughts very welcome! ✌️
Great review man, super helpful! Did you find that the COLD.RDY shoe ankle section stretched a bit over time? Mine feel a bit too tight but the foot fits perfectly
Can't comment on this particular shoe but when the Terrex were first released, I picked up a GTX pair as opposed to my usual choice of Salomons. It was a bad mistake, they felt like a "fashion shoe", not a tool for running/hiking. Very little support, cheap feeling materials. I wore them for two days before sticking them in a cupoboard and ordering another pair of Salomons. I'd never trust an Adidas shoe to be good at anything other than looking cool and I'd highly reccomend that anyone considering buying these just buys Salomons instead.
Interesting that you say that, I had Salomon’s a long time ago and the laces broke lol and they ran super narrow. Then I went with Salewa they where my go to extreme boots after about 8 years the sole fell off!!!! I was devastated because they had sentimental value and had been all over the world with me. These have been awesome for me so far and apparently many many others if you look at the reviews on the Adidas website so IDK maybe you got a bad pair.
Hello sir, thanks for the great video! By the way, can I wear the Terrex Free Hiker on snow day in the city like NYC? Would that be too cold and slippery?
@@KRTLyfe Thanks for the reply! I prefer the look of Terrex Free Hiker GTX instead of the COLD.RDY. So the Terrex Free Hiker GTX works well on ice and snow too?
I think the whole boot should be water proof not just the lower part. The rain in Chicago and puddles can be very intense and I need something to keep me warm and dry .
First time on the channel. Great review and outdoor set-up 👌 just one question I'm hoping you can help me with. So like you rezza I'm looking for something that's not the traditional fresh out the woods, cumbersome, hiking boot. I tried walking in Nike Pegasus GTX Trail Runners but it turns out I'm susceptible to spraining my ankles. So I'm basically looking for something similar, but with added ankle support. So with these being high/mid tops, what's the ankle support like on them compared to a boot and compared to a lowtop trail runner?
The Cold Ready version has a decent amount of support. The mid has some support as well but not as much as the Cold Ready. Adidas does have a few other designs that might be better suited for you.
I like those Adidas boots. Where did you get them from and what is the link brother? Is that a rain jacket you got ? Can you share some of the links ? I am in Atlanta by the way now.
Hello, I would appreciate if you can share the link to the non winter boots. I went to Adidas website and I could not find them. Thanks for your great reviews.
Loved the review man, I have the free hikers but am considering the cold.rdy and I think with your review you got me sold. I also wanted to know what pants those were at the end of your video, where you checked for the goretex or if you have any recommendations where I can get pants like those?
Those are some super cheap H&M pants... However they work excellent for camping and outdoor activities. I’ve gone on several multi day camping and fishing trips wearing only these pants. In weather ranging from 30F to 90f They are very comfortable, dry pretty fast, warm when wet, breath decent for the weight of the material, Zippered pockets I could go on and on about these pants lol. H&M mistakenly made one stellar pair of pants.
Like your video man, so which means even the regular TERREX FREE HIKER HIKING SHOES are not leaking with water-resistant as good as Adidas Terrex Free Hiker Zip?
Sorry for the late reply, I was trying to find out. They are a generic eBay brand with a “unique” name Modern Soldier or something hilarious like that.
Yes I can! It is made by The North Face it is called the DRYZZLE jacket. It is released in a variety of colors every year. I don’t think they have the same color yellow at the moment available on the website. Thank you for watching commenting and subscribing to our channel!
@@KRTLyfe awesome thank you. Too bad that yellow color is no longer available. Now that it has been 8 months since this video what are your thoughts on the adidas gore Tex free hikers? Hopefully you got to put them to more tests in the super cold and wet weather. Do you still have them, did you get the triple black free hikers? Or have you moved on to something else?
I think Hiking boots are not meant for driving, if you do so then sure you will see the difference . I just bought SALOMON Hike GTX I cant wait to try them.
Hey, I just found out your channel and fell in love with it the second I saw it. I have an question for you, since I cannot get COLD.RDY models here in my country, I'm looking forward to get TERREX FREE HIKER GORE-TEX 2.0. What is your opinion about TERREX FREE HIKER GORE-TEX 2.0? Thanks
It looks like it should be just as good as the original version. The zipper on the cold rdy model didn’t sit to well to me. If that zipper fails it’s not an easy fix vs laces can easily be changed on the go. I am not familiar with the Merrell Rogue Hiker. The reviews look pretty decent. Hopefully what it lacks in aesthetics it makes up for in functionality.
@@KRTLyfe Thank you so much for your feedback. Since I found your channel I'm knee deep in your videos, I love your style and I love how deep you review your products. You just got a lifelong subscriber.
On top of these, can you reccomend me something in the similiar price range. I'm looking for something that is both comfortable and waterproof since I wear my boots nearly all day long outside in heavy rain. I'm specifically looking for a Gore-Tex boot since that is the best shoot I guess.
I hike in Arizona, where there’s lots of rocks. I hiked this year with a trail running shoe. I felt every rock hard surface and ripple of every boulder /rock. Does this have a hard soul where are you didn’t feel it on your foot?
Nice review! How about ankle support on these? I had injury on my left ankle and after long mountain walks its geting a bit swell. Should I look for higher boots for more ankle support? Thanks!
Check out Salamon sport cross mid. I love mine just ordered a pair of these as I got them less than half price and I like the look will see how they compair.
Are they actually warm enough for cold weather? UB21 c.rdy aint doing anything abt the cold weather. Im planning to get free hiker 2.0 gtx for winter season. But im worried it wont do cold resistance.
I’m not sure about your climate but I was only able to wear the CLD RDY a hand full of times here in Georgia and my feet wear too warm in them. That never happens to me, so I would say they are very, very warm.
You should try out the gtx version of the shoe ver. They are the same but have gtx layer added and they have a all black version. They are on sale right now and bought 2 cuz I work outside alot.
Main question, do we really need to buy a half size up (I wear 9, so 9.5) as with many hiking shoes to allow layered socks? Or as the reviewer says these get loose? Any experience guys?
Hello! I saw one of your guys videos where you compared the terrex free hikers cold.rdy vs gtx. I want to get the cold.rdy but i was curious about the sizing. So i have tried the GTX and i fit quite well in size 8.5, so if i fit well on the size 8.5 on the GTX, what size would you recomand me getting the Cold.rdy ones, 8.5 or 9? Ps: i cant try the terrex cold.rdy physicaly on for size
How is your experience with sizing? I usually wear 10, but some shoes like 2k boost goretex 10.5 is better. Not sure which size to order. And I can't try them physically.
Love the design and quality material but unfortunately the bottom rubber soles seemed too thin. I have doubts that it could handle stepping on nails and such during hiking or explorations trips.
I had a pair on the non-bost GTX hikers, sprung a leak somewhere after about 6 months of use during the winter. I dont think the soles sealing is too good nor some of the toe area seals. It feels like the leak always starts near my pinky toe.
You know, I could never find anywhere how the .RDY technology works... When you wash your gore-tex shoes you have to reapply and spray so that the fabric works correctly... If that's the case with the .RDY, I would go with a regular pair of shoes which I could wash in the washing machine as well, so I wouldn't be afraid of damaging the technology
I believe the COLD.RDY is just Adidas fancy name for insulation. I could be wrong tho. Washing GTX is pretty straight forward unless its super old GTX! CHeck out my ARC’TERYX videos LOL. In most cases you should only have to wash and reapply DWR.
I think the GTX is good for winter but it really depends on where you live and your body type. The COLD.RDY is definitely more insulated and robust. If i lived in Toronto COLD.RDY all day. In the southern US the GTX should be more than enough. However that also depends on your feet.
Going on a trip up to Colorado in the snow and don’t want to use my regular hiking boots would the regular trex keep snow out the boot and feet dry nothing worse then cold wet socks
I would say it depends on how deep the snow is going to be and if you are going to be using gaiters. Either way I would recommend some type of gaiter but if it was me I would lean towards the cold ready version for sure!
I just recently purchased a pair of the gtx free hiker version and was wondering if the upper (prime knit) area is waterproof or holds up against rain?
I wear Outlier 99.9 percent of the time. In most of this video I am wearing some H&M joggers and some cheap TACTICOOL pants from EBAY they just happen to be great for camping.
Appreciate the field testing for waterproofing, really helps!! Not every reviewer would wade in a pond to really test the GTX 👍🏼

Do you still have/use them? The one with the orange are they too narrow? And how has that zipper held up?
Great review, really helped me make up my mind!
Glad I could help! Thank you for watching!
yo great video, liked the way you broke it all down.
Agree 100% I own both pairs and with black boost soles and love them
Thank you!
Great review, and a great boot.
great video, love the contrasting opinions you have on both model boots and how you break down some pros and cons.
Oh and nothing was wrong with my regular GTX model. They were still in really good shape and never leaked after a lot of usage.
Yeah, I like the regular GTX for the summer… I get cold easy tho, so they work well for me.
@@KRTLyfe I’ve opted for the Terrex Trailmaker GoreTex hiking shoe. Adidas definitely won me over with the CLD.RDY
Bought Free Hiker GTX cos the felt better to me and look more stylish (don't look like expedition wear). The shoes are for different temperature ranges as was mentioned. Boost make them feel softer/bouncier than regular winter boots but not as soft as X9000L4 I have.
quality review! Those pants are fire, who makes them?
Honestly I don’t ont know my brother gifted them to me. I believe they came from eBay tho.
Awesome review! 💯Thanks a lot!!
Thank you.
I got a pair of each, they are my shoes when it snows so my feet still completely dry and I can wear them all day because they are absolutely comfortable.
Yes, these are great shoes.
Great video guys, new subscriber.
Thank you very much we appreciate it.
Great video…..just bought those boots and love them 😜
Glad you like them! I just ordered another pair lol!
Great review brotha!
Thank you very much.
Yeah it works really good!
Great content, I have the free hiker and the lower cut version for trail running.
Howdy, mighty fine review. For the free hiker is the goretex all the way up the knit section? Thanks for any help
It goes a little more than half almost 3/4 of the way up.
@@KRTLyfe So does that include the tongue section?
Thanks for review, I have them both and you're right on about driving with them on. Its very uncomfortable I end up loosing down lase, or unzipping.
Great review!! Will it withstand the canadian winters, Sir?? Please advice as I really like them.
Show us how you put on Adidas Terrex...its will really very interest!!!!😀😀😀
They are super easy to put on.
Great review! Your girl doesn't say much, but when she does talk, she makes some really good points lol
Merci, j'hésitais à me les prendre et tu m'a convaincu :) bonne chance pour la suite ^^
I plan to bay this TERREX FREE HIKER GORE-TEX
Could you tell me something about how it feels on snow is it could standing on ice or snow for longer time???
Btw very gooood video.👍
With the COLD.RDY I couldn’t tell i was standing on snow. However I was only standing on snow for an hour or so.
If the shoe is too tight then swap out insole with a thinner insole. You can also wear them without the insole and just wear a thicker sock.
Great suggestion, thank you.
Great review, what is the yellow jacket you're wearing at the end?
It is a North Face Jacket from a few years back.
I personally don’t find the normal GTX pair hot at all… but my feet are always cold so take my option with a grain of salt.
@@KRTLyfe thanks for the response! So many different opinions on the gortex! Thanks.
Great review man, super helpful! Did you find that the COLD.RDY shoe ankle section stretched a bit over time? Mine feel a bit too tight but the foot fits perfectly
No mine have not stretched at all. I zip them up when walking or standing but unzip them when I’m driving or sitting down for a while.
Great content!
Thank you and thanks for watching commenting and subscribing!
best review ever
Thank you so much, we sincerely appreciate it.
Hello sir, thanks for the great video! By the way, can I wear the Terrex Free Hiker on snow day in the city like NYC? Would that be too cold and slippery?
I would recommend it for snow and Ice for sure especially the COLD.RDY version. I wore mine on Ice and snow with no issue at all.
@@KRTLyfe Thanks for the reply!
I prefer the look of Terrex Free Hiker GTX instead of the COLD.RDY. So the Terrex Free Hiker GTX works well on ice and snow too?
@@Mr-Doctor-King I think the regular version will be good as well, just not as warm .
Can you do a long term review? My terrex gtx boots have lost waterproofing after some months.
I think the whole boot should be water proof not just the lower part. The rain in Chicago and puddles can be very intense and I need something to keep me warm and dry .
In Chicago you might prefer the Timberland 40 below or something similar.
Thats how proper shoes review shood be Do you feel diffrence in grip between wintergrip vs regural continental
Kinda, most of the different feel is how the COLD.RDY feels more boot like and the regular one more sneaker ish.
I would also be interested to hear what you think about the North Face Vectiv Exploris Futurelight Boots.
You can get them on the Adidas website. The Jacket is no longer available on TNF website tho.
Forget the shoes! That truck tho! 🙌🏻
LOL thank you!
Hello, I would appreciate if you can share the link to the non winter boots. I went to Adidas website and I could not find them. Thanks for your great reviews.
www.adidas.com/us/terrex-free-hiker-gtx-hiking-shoes/FX4510.html
I’ve been wearing adidas boost sneakers for years. If they are tight just take the insole out. You’re right on the boost so it’s not hard.
Loved the review man, I have the free hikers but am considering the cold.rdy and I think with your review you got me sold. I also wanted to know what pants those were at the end of your video, where you checked for the goretex or if you have any recommendations where I can get pants like those?
ADIDAS Z.N.E. PARLEY PANTS
@@KRTLyfe thank you, will definitely grab a pair when I can
Like your video man, so which means even the regular TERREX FREE HIKER HIKING SHOES are not leaking with water-resistant as good as Adidas Terrex Free Hiker Zip?
Yes, they seem to have very similar performance levels. Thanks for watching commenting and subscribing!
Awesome reviewer, mind sharing the brand of those grey cargo pants?
Sorry for the late reply, I was trying to find out. They are a generic eBay brand with a “unique” name Modern Soldier or something hilarious like that.
Good video, where can I find those boots
Adidas website.
Salewa actually does a similar style boot called the Wild Fire Edge Mid GTX. Looks worth trying if you like Salewa
Yeah I saw those, they had mixed reviews tho. I like the way they look but they seem to fall apart fast from what I’ve read.
Thanks for the review. Can you shed some info/light and that yellow jacket you were wearing at the end of the video?
Any updates on these shoes?
a real test. thank you
Awesome review! Thanks for remembering the water test!
You bet! We are glad you enjoyed the review and found it helpful!
Thanks
Another alternative is Merrell Rogue Hiker Mid Gore-Tex can I get your opinion on these as well?
Thank you so much!!!
I hike in Arizona, where there’s lots of rocks. I hiked this year with a trail running shoe. I felt every rock hard surface and ripple of every boulder /rock. Does this have a hard soul where are you didn’t feel it on your foot?
Where did you guys go camping? Looks great
Blue Ridge GA. Thanks for watching commenting and subscribing!
Nice review!
How about ankle support on these? I had injury on my left ankle and after long mountain walks its geting a bit swell. Should I look for higher boots for more ankle support? Thanks!
I’m not sure, you really need to find a boot that works best for you but these do have a lot of support on the ankles.
Or maybe just get barefoot shoes in which it's impossible to roll your ankle and will actually strengthen it instead of weakening it further.
Adidas also does a 510 mountain bike boot in goretex
It's quite a lot cheaper than these but just as good/ tougher
I’ve seen them on the website for a few seasons now but never in a store or in person. I am curious to see what are like tho!
Love your vibe
Thank you so much brother as asalaamalakum!
Check out Salamon sport cross mid. I love mine just ordered a pair of these as I got them less than half price and I like the look will see how they compair.
I definitely would like to try the Salomon XA Alpine 2. It’s a very nice looking boot.
Just bought them on vinted for 140€ can't wait to have them on feet
You should enjoy them, they are great shoes.
Thank you!
You're welcome! Thank you for watching commenting and subscribing.
Hey, so is the COLD.RDY version waterproof as the GORETEX ones in every terrex model? Thank You
Yes they are, the COLD. RDY version is also GTX.
You should try out the gtx version of the shoe ver. They are the same but have gtx layer added and they have a all black version. They are on sale right now and bought 2 cuz I work outside alot.
I am confused. I did try the GTX version.
Thank you, very helpful!
Main question, do we really need to buy a half size up (I wear 9, so 9.5) as with many hiking shoes to allow layered socks? Or as the reviewer says these get loose? Any experience guys?
I would say try them in store with different socks. Everyone’s feet and needs are so different.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching commenting and subscribing!
Noice. Have the cold rdy one. It's -20c here and I'm good
I would try going true to size unless you plan to wear really thick socks.
@@KRTLyfe thanks dude thats what i orderd!
Is the GTX good for winter? I know you mention the cold.rdy is really warm but the other is more breathable?
If you look at our Instagram @KRTLYFE. I just up loaded a story walking through some pretty deep water. It should give you a good ideal.
When you go for a light profile without compromise all the characteristics of an hiking boots, so it's fine..
Absolutely.
random question, what brand beanie is that?! fire!
What brand pants do you wear? it fits perfect with the boots?
I wear Outlier 99.9 percent of the time. In most of this video I am wearing some H&M joggers and some cheap TACTICOOL pants from EBAY they just happen to be great for camping.
