  • Laptop down with a broken adapter? I am going to show you how I repair this laptop charger that has a short where the wire comes out of the charger. This wire has been repaired several times over the last two years due to cats chewing on it & getting pinched under chairs.

Places like Best Buy sell replacement chargers. They usually have a selectable Voltage switch and a range of adapter sizes for various laptop (and other device) sockets. Just get one that has your Voltage in its selectable range. The cord socket may have two polarity connector holes, one marked with a (+) indicator. The adapters may have two pins with an indicator for the cord socket (+) pin. There are different configurations, but make sure the adapters compatible with your laptop or device. If the device's socket inner connector is (-), you plug it in so the adapter's inner plug connector is (-), or 180° from if it was (+). You do have to know that correct Voltage for the selector switch and the needed polarity, but you have it on your repaired charger. In cases where you don't know the Voltage and/or polarity, just Google the make and model and you'll find either them or the manual, which you can can download. Manufacturer's have manuals in the Downloads section for the model. Of course, you need a working computer to do that, but you do now.
These charges are MUCH cheaper than an OEM charger, but get at least "Better" out of Good, Better, Best. Cheap ones can cause issues over time and even right away. Quality, Voltage Regulation and such varies with price. Of course, going OEM or direct OEM Replacement is best, as long as the replacement brand is high quality. At least you won't have to worry about the Voltage selector switch accidentally changing positions, or connecting the adapter wrong. The choice is yours.
Great job repairing the charger, Joe! Congratulations!
